There once lived a monk called Shan, in a village in China. He had

earned a great name for himself. But he was very arrogant. Qui Jun heard of

his arrogance and wanted to teach the monk a lesson. He went to meet Shan

Firefly or Lightning Bug

(Photinus pyralis) The Pyralis firefly (also known as the lightning bug) is a common firefly in North

America. This partly nocturnal, luminescent beetle is the most common firefly in the USA.

At night, the very end (the last abdominal segment) of the firefly glows a bright yellow-

green color. The firefly can control this glowing effect. The brightness of a single firefly is 1/40

of a candle. Fireflies use their glow to attract other fireflies. Males flash about every five

seconds; females flash about every two seconds. This firefly is harvested by the biochemical

industry for the organic compunds luciferin (which is the chemical the firefly uses for its

bioluminescence).

This flying insect is about 0.75 inch (2 cm) long. It is mostly black, with two red spots

parts (the head, thorax, and abdomen).

Last autumn I was in India during Diwali, the “Festival of Lights” which takes place

every year to celebrate the victory of good over evil. This festival lasts for five days and is held

at the end of October or in the first week of November.

Preparations began weeks before the event. People cleaned their homes and painted

wonderful designs called rangolis on the walls and floors. They bought beautiful new clothes

and jewelry to wear during the festival. Women made delicious sweets which were better than

any others I have ever tasted.

During the five days of Diwali, every home and temple was decorated, inside and

outside, with lovely clay lamps and colourful candles. After dark, the whole neighbourhood

glittered with thousands of tiny lights, as though in a fairy tale. Excited children set off

firecrackers, and at first I was frightened by the loud bangs, but the spectacular display was so

fascinating that I soon joined in the spirit of celebration.

Diwali is a deeply moving festival. I am very grateful I had the chance to share in this

celebration of peace and harmony. I have fond memories of the experience, and in particular I

will never forget how friendly and generous people were.

A farmer came across a bird with a broken wing. He picked it up, took it home and looked

after it lovingly, even though his wife complained bitterly about his wasting too much time on

It was Sunday morning December 26th 2004. The day that I would never forget forever. We went to the beach in Meulaboh, Aceh. Many people were there when I arrived.
