the change to enter and win a three night trip to
Vegas; all you have to do is buy a $2 Poker Pick
ticket! This month, we had the privilege of dining
at The George atop the Founders Tower. It was
an absolutely delicious dinner in an enjoyable
environment with spectacular views of the city.
I hope you soak up this September for all it’s
worth. My piece of advice to you this month:
“People need to be encouraged. People need to
be reminded of how wonderful they are. People
need to be believed in –
told that they are brave
and smart and capable
of accomplishing all
the dreams they dream
and more. Remind each
other of this.”
Happy Fall Y’all! Wait… did I really just say
that? Where did summer go? Is it just me or does
summer fly by quicker each year? Although I
am a huge fan of the summer months, I’m still
a sucker for a beautiful fall season. Not much
makes my heart happier than cozying up,
pumpkin flavored everything, college football,
and of course fall fashion! Each year, one of
our most popular issues is the fall fashion and
beauty showcase issue. This year we had over
90 entries submitted for hair and makeup, WOW!
Congratulations to the winners and a round of
applause to those not chosen. The talent that
Oklahoma offers constantly impresses me.
In this issue, we take you back through the
years of impressive and not so impressive
hairstyles. The History of Hairstyle Evolution lets
you reminisce through the decades. We’re really
excited to be teaming up with the Oklahoma
Lottery to start bringing you some really great
things. From September 7-October 12, you have Lauren Wright

History of Hairstyles 101EVOLUTION OF HAIR THROUGH THE YEARS
1920s:The Bob/Finger Wave
Shorter than short was the trend. The Roaring ’20s was famous for its flapper style. Women would crop their hair between chin and ear level. The short bob would flow in uniform waves, creating the “finger wave.” This hairstyle was greatly popularized by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda, which takes us back to the time of the flashy and dazzling “Great Gatsby.”
1930s:Here Come the Curls
Boyish haircuts went out and length came back in. Women embraced their curves in every aspect, hair included. However, it was not typically longer than shoulder-length. Abundant sausage curls and pin curls became the norm. Top with a hat and you’d be set.
1960s:The Bouffant and the
BeehiveHello, hairspray! Big, bigger, biggest: the bouffant was all the rage in the ’60s. Nothing says “big hair” like the beehive. Women couldn’t get enough hairspray, as they teased their hair up into a tall domed shape.
1970s:The Feathered Flip (aka
the Farrah Fawcett)Behold the dynamic duo: the tease and part. This look was a dramatic departure from previous decades. Unlike the tight curls, hairnets, and rolling updos, this look allowed for a more free, soft and flowing style.
1980s:The Perm
The key word here is “crimp.” Crimping irons
were a staple in most homes. They were used
excessively, and
that goes for
hairspray, too.
No one will be
able to forget
the infamous
backcombed
and feathered
bangs. We’re
going to go
ahead and name
this the era of
the hair fail.
so6ix.com | SEPTEMBER 2014 13
History of Hairstyles 1011940s:The Snood
What’s a snood, you ask? It’s a fashionable hairnet. By this time, some women were daringly
growing their hair past their shoulders. While the men were fighting World War II, the women were picking up a lot of extra tasks on the home front. The snood was a fashionable way to keep their longer hair tied up while they worked.
1950s:The Pixie & the Poodle
Glamour and femininity took the main stage during the ’50s. Women deemed straight hair a no-no, desiring a luscious curled look. A cute and fashionable ribbon accompanied curled ponytails. Some women, like Audrey Hepburn, branched out into the fringe with a very short pixie cut. We love Lucy! Lucille Ball introduced the poodle cut.
1990s:The Rachel
Cue the “Friends” theme song. The infamous Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston,
rocked this ’do, and it set the world buzzing. Women all over the country walked into the beauty shop asking for the “Rachel.” This layered and bouncy hairstyle was full of highlights and lowlights.
2000s to Now:
Anything GoesThis is the age of trial and
error. Really, anything goes.
We have the advantage of
decades of hairstyle evolution
and risky combinations. Just
about everything has been
tried. From straight-across
bangs to fishtail braids, from
ombre to pastel colors, from
board-straight to loose beach
waves: it’s all been done (or so
we think!)

everyone’s asking is “how do I win”? Each
Poker Pick ticket displays a 5 card
hand from a deck of 52. All tickets
are computer selected Easy
Pick, players cannot
choose their cards with
this game (because if
you could chances are
we’d all have a Royal
Flush and the Lottery
would be paying out top
prizes all day, they are not
an ATM). To win instantly:
match the cards on your ticket to
one of the winning hands shown at
the bottom of the ticket and you win
up to $10,000; get a hand with jacks or
better and you win a prize. To win nightly:
match at least 2 cards on your ticket to the cards
drawn in the nightly Poker Pick drawing and you
win up to $100,000. Each ticket offers a chance
to win twice, up to $10,000 at the time of purchase
and up to $100,000 later.
The advantage of Poker Pick is that it provides
entertainment value across all types of lottery
players with a single transaction while cleverly
introducing those players to a product line they
may not currently be playing. Customers that
enjoy the thrill of an instant win with Scratchers
can have that same experience with Poker Pick
plus they could win big later. Customers that
believe “good things come to those who wait” for
Poker Pick is
the first hybrid
game for the Oklahoma Lottery,
a cross over ticket that has appeal to
both scratch ticket and traditional number game
players. Consumers have the chance to win twice
with a single $2 ticket: instantly when the ticket is
purchased and then again in the nightly drawing.
“This game is a unique addition to our current
product offering and we hope that it resonates
well with both our scratch ticket and draw game
audiences” said Jay Finks, Director of Marketing
and Administration for the Oklahoma Lottery.
“Currently, Poker Pick’s $100,000 top prize is the
largest of any of our Oklahoma-only games.”
The one hundred thousand dollar question

different. We’ve got another great promotion
planned for later in the year, we’re still working
out the details but it will combine Poker Pick with
another very popular game to offer a prize with
huge brand equity. Stay tuned.” said Finks.
Purchase Poker Pick tickets from any Oklahoma
Lottery retailer starting September 7th. Good luck!
the nightly drawing can still chase that dream but
maybe with a little extra cash in their pocket from
an earlier instant win.
“Poker Pick is a new opportunity to cross
promote current game play styles among our
existing customer base and opens the door for trial
among new audiences. Our hope is that Poker Pick
can lessen the gap between scratch players and
number game players while offering maximum play
value for a $2 purchase,” said Finks.
And to sweeten the pot a little more, the Lottery
is giving away trips to Vegas with the launch of
this new game. From September 7 – October 12
players will receive an entry form with every Poker
Pick ticket purchased that can be mailed in for a
chance to win 1 of 4 trips including roundtrip air, a
3-night hotel stay and $750 spending cash.
“For the first 5 weeks players have the
opportunity to win 3 times with each Poker Pick
ticket. Vegas trips are popular prizes among our
players and we hope this promotion will be no

It’s fall, y’all! We can hardly believe
it, but we’re ready to say bye-bye to the
tanks and shorts and bring in the pants, cardigans,
and boots. This fall we’re all about the various shades of
neutrals – black, grey, brown, beige, charcoal, and cream. With
these quality base shades you can add in just about any color
whether you’re looking for a good pop or a more subtle add in. We
absolutely love a good burnt orange, navy, or purple. We haven’t
jumped into the frigid temperatures just yet so take advantage of a
three-quarter-length sleeve, a light chiffon blouse, or my personal
favorite – the double slit pant. It’s that time of the year where
we can’t get enough of being outdoors in the beautiful
weather, partaking in the traditional fall activities, and
indulging in everything pumpkin flavored. Soak
up fall for all it’s worth – in style!

PUPPY OFTHE MONTH
Newfoundland
This puppy doesn’t stay puppy-sized for long.
The Newfoundland, or “Newfie,” is a large breed
of dog and a true workhorse. Newfies are masters
at long-distance swimming and have lifesaving
instincts. They are strong and obedient, they have
great agility, and they sport a heavy coat that
originally served as protection against icy waters.
PRODUCT PICKSMac Lipstick: Ruby Woo
Red lipstick can enhance a look to make it sophisticated, sexy or trendy—or all three, if it's the bright, matte and insanely cool Ruby Woo. It flatters all skin tones, and even better, it doesn’t transfer to teeth! This one is a keeper.
Bumble and Bumble:
Thickening Hairspray
The perfect three-for-one: give your hair the hold you need with the volume you desire, plus protection from the heat and sizzle of straightening and curling irons.
Essie Nail Polish: Ballet
SlippersPale pink is the new black. This is the perfect color for everyday wear or an important occasion. It will also make an easy transition into upcoming fall color trends.
Maybelline: NY Instant Age
Rewind Eraser Dark Spot
Stop fretting over your dark circles, and stop messing with products that leave you looking the same. Maybelline has come up with the perfect solution. Just a thin coat of this light-reflecting concealer will keep you looking ageless.
Urban Decay: 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil
Looking for the qualities of a liquid liner without the hassle? This eye pencil is just as dark and precise as liquid eyeliner, but goes on with complete ease. Can we get a hallelujah for no smudging!

HEALTHY LIVINGYou’re on your health journey, but of course there are going to be nights when pre-prepped meals or cooking at home isn’t desired or isn’t an option. When you find yourself out to eat you can still follow the ‘clean’ eating guidelines and help to make your dining experience as healthy-friendly as possible.

TIPS AND TRICKS• Always choose water for your drink, or another drink that doesn’t have added sugars.
• Start your meal with a salad packed with veggies (vinaigrette dressing on the side), to help control hunger and feel satisfied sooner.
• When you receive your large sized portion of an entrée, immediately ask for a to-go box and place half of the meal in the box. This is immediate portion control and gives you a second meal if you wish to eat it again.
• Ask for little or not butter and oil.
• Always ask whether healthy side substitutions are available. Many dishes come with French fries or mashed potatoes, instead ask for a salad, grilled veggies, or fruit. It may require little cost, but it’s worth it.
• Avoid the “extras”: cocktails, appetizers, and bread.

the best of you. If you feel ill, seek professional advice. If dreams are disturbing look at what they are revealing on a deeper level. A new friendship starts after the 22nd.
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19)Travel plans need to be ironed out clearly especially if you intend to go somewhere new. Research accommodation thoroughly and budget!! Friendships will be part of your need to get out and explore the world. Loads of calls, emails and other text messages might overwhelm you so have a strategy to deal with the influx of information. The new Moon of the 24th indicates a chance for you to recommence something that was begun but not completed. A relationship perhaps?
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18)This is one of the busiest trends of your life and the full Moon of the 9th may cause undue stress especially i your financial and work spheres. Be prepared with a fall back plan. Activities are centered around frequent meetings, dealing with bosses and planning. Direct your restless mind into new channels. Banking matters are a nuisance but can't be avoided. Take a short break around the 25th.
PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20) An emotional bond may be formed between
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 22)If you can lift the illusionary veil that surrounds your relationships and see others as they really are, you may be able to avoid a disappointing, deceptive emotional experience. Matters improve after the 4th with Mercury in your Sun sign giving love a boost due to your optimistic attitude. This is a perfect time to consider a personal or business partnership. Health matters are confusing to say the least but solutions are there when the full Moon occurs on the 24th.
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21)Matters are not as they appear on the surface. There is an inclination to be easily influenced and led by others, or suffer betrayal of confidence. You can experience a devitalizing time due to Saturn and Mars. You may also be too trusting, placing yourself at a professional disadvantage which can result in a financial or business loss. Don't be too open with ideas now and wait till after the 20th to give the green light on any new project.
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21)During the first week of the month you may come in contact with hospitals or institutions or with people who are emotionally or mentally disturbed and will try to pawn their troubles off onto your shoulders. Avoid letting your imagination get
so6ix.com | SEPTEMBER 2014 31
yourself and a sibling or neighbor after the 10th but don't get too close too quickly. Do not permit your mind to dwell on past slights or what you feel was a personal affront or criticism. Self-control is your theme during September. Personal contacts with the general public will play an important role in your financial picture. You are very sensitive to what the public wants and needs especially after the new Moon of the 24th.
ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19) Emotional and domestic difficulties, especially where women are concerned is indicated this month. They are likely to be a source of irritation or interference with personal plans. This could result in a break-up of close emotional ties -- perhaps a separation from a loved one or parent. The full Moon of the 9th activates your need to resolve emotional issues from the past while the new Moon of the 24th indicates possible new relationships forming.
TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20)This could be a fun time socially, but much depends upon the effort you put forth into motivating and influencing others. They are apt to rely too much on your personal energy and expertise in the planning of social gatherings. The full Moon on the 9th means your social life is revving up considerably while the new Moon on the 24th shows that your co-workers expect more of you in terms of input.
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)There is an emotional pull between family responsibilities and career interests. You may have to find a way in which to blend the two areas together. This will be are evident between the 18th and 24 when the Moon is full. Changes are likely to affect your immediate personal relationships, through the possibility of moving or travelling. Expect a change in relationships after the new Moon of the 24th.
CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)Mental or physical activity is pronounced now. There is a desire to expand your mind through new studies, writing, lecturing, or exchange of ideas. You're physically active and may take an interest in new sports such as golf, bowling, racquetball, walking, or jogging but take care as you are also prone to injury. Situations will develop that will take you into many diversified directions at the time of new Moon on the 24th.
LEO (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22)The full Moon on the 9th requires a quick and decisive response on your finances. You may be extremely sensitive this month and confusion over money matters of any kind can create a difficult ego problem. This is not the time to push career matters or enter into new undertakings either. Nor is it suitable for asking favors of others in general, either a parent or boss. The new Moon of the 24th is a better omen for improvement in your affairs and things moving forward again.
VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22)
Safeguard your health by getting regular check-ups at this time and don't
over-stress yourself this month. You feel as though you have to do everything,
especially around the full Moon of the 9th when others expect too much of you.
The new Moon on the 24th indicates new business and financial opportunities
so be quick off the mark when that turn of luck arrives.

Walking into this place [The George] brings
with it such a feeling of nostalgia. The top floor
of the Founders Tower has been a staple of
Oklahoma City for over 60 years and so many
Oklahomans have great memories of this
place. Sitting vacant for the last decade, Mr.
Kevin George seized the opportunity to open
up a great restaurant atop the tower once again. Listening to Mr. George describe his fantastic
restaurant is inspiring as you can hear his pride and excitement about it. Sparring no expense,
he has fully updated it with beautiful decor all throughout, and accentuates the beautiful views
of the city during the top floor dining experience. Bringing in Executive Chef Joshua Valentine,
famous for his time on the Bravo TV show Top Chef, Valentine has created a truly unique and
artistic Prime restaurant. Sitting down with Chef Valentine, he explained his complete love for
this food and being able to be surrounded by the top of the notch ingredients that he loves to
work with. His personal favorites at the restaurants are a toss up between the dry aged ribeye
steak or the chicken dish. Each dish is intricate and beautifully presented, matched by unique
and delicious flavors. Also, The George proudly offers the delights of a New York Pastry Chef,
Chef Shelby Sieg, who is definitely an artist as well and brings desserts unlike any found in the
city. Be sure to try several of her amazing creations on the dessert menu.

Norman, OK 73069405.329.0377 • facebook.com/victoriaspastashop
Located in the heart of the University of Oklahoma’s Campus Corner, Victoria’s is a go-to restaurant for Norman locals and students alike. For the last 25 years, Victoria’s has followed a “pasta-only” rule, but that doesn’t mean there’s a lack of variety or flavor. Every pasta and sauce is made fresh in-house--very hard to come by these days! We suggest the lasagna rolls, stuffed with shrimp and cheese, or the black pepper crab linguine. Be sure to try their weekly and daily specials: the chefs know what they’re doing. Don’t feel like making the drive to Norman? You’re in luck! They’re opening their second shop on 104th and May in south Oklahoma City. Give this authentic Italian cuisine a try.

Meet Sela! This beauty is making her way
up in the hair world quickly ever since she
began her hair journey back in 2009. Sela
started school at the University of Oklahoma
and quickly realized she wasn’t following
her true passion no matter how big of a
Sooner fan she has been her whole life. She
soon enrolled in Duncan Brothers School
of Hair Design where she excelled past her
classmates quickly and started practicing
cuts, colors, and styles in 2010. She found
her salon home at Cameo Salon and Spa
off of Western and NW 50th. Sela doesn’t
necessarily have a favorite focus in the hair
world. She simply loves doing it all. Her
favorite part of her job is being able to help
the appearance of her clients, which in turn
can help create many positive life changes.
As a hairstylist, it’s important to Sela that
she connects with her clients, and she really
enjoys getting to interact with them on a
daily basis. One piece of advice Sela has
for readers, is to keep up with what’s new,
what’s different, and constantly find and
accept change for your hair. Mix it up, keep it
interesting; for some people that is hard, but
Sela can put you at ease and help with stylish
and creative changes.
When not doing hair, Sela immerses
herself into art. Painting, drawing, creating,
building, and coloring are just among a few
of the art activities you can find her doing.
She’s creative at heart, but her true heart lies
with her family. Sela spends all the time she
can with her family and two sisters. She is
such a foodie. She loves trying new places
and cooking up delicious recipes for friends
and family. For your hair needs, visit Sela at
Cameo Salon & Spa! Phone: 405-990-8317.

STEVE SCHARDEINOwner & Hairstylist of Schardein’s
Meet Steve Schardein! This mastermind of everything hair got his start back in 1976. He had been going to college and went to a hairdresser here in the city that tried to convince Steve of becoming a hairstylist. Reluctant at first, Steve walked into college the morning that semester started and boldly un-enrolled and began his hair journey from that day forward. Over the years, Steve has been able to really connect to his clients and people that come to see him. He takes joy in being able to interact with the clients, aid in enhancing their look, and truly helping them. For Steve it’s not just solely about the clients, but his stylists as well. Throughout the years he’s seen many young girls struggling in the hair world and knew he had to make a difference. Schardein’s is completely employee based, not booth rental like most typical salons. Schardein’s ultimate goal is for each of his stylists to have a custom home, brand new car, have families, and time off to spend with their loved ones. Everyone at Schardein’s starts at the shampoo wall, bathrooms, and towels and eventually works their way up. This growing salon is now at an astonishing 30 stylists and 50 employees! There are future plans for more Schardein’s coming near you and around the United States – stay tuned!
When not busy with hair, Steve is an endurance athlete that can be found bicycling or snow skiing among just a few things. Steve is also a grandfather to his precious grandbabies! He is constantly trying to evolve and grow the salon while staying up to date with the newest techniques, styles, products, etc. He attends hair business classes all over the country and world. He was just recently invited amongst only eight other Americans to a class in Shanghai where he was able to bring the newest education back to his stylists. Schardein’s has been recognized for many awards over the years and most recently was named top five salon designs of the year out of all of the salons in the country. Go Schardein’s! They put in the effort to give people the best service, styles, and newest looks. It’s truly a unique salon experience. Visit them today on N. May and Britton Rd.
