So here is how the final month of the Okie Honor Awards will work.

The last two months were an open nomination period in which

everyone could vote for anyone and anything for each category.

After sorting tens of thousands of nominations, we have found the

“top 5 most nominated” for each category. It is now time to find the

#1’s. In the month of December, you can vote on which one of the

top 5 in each category is your favorite, and it’s simple. In this issue,

you will find the list of categories with the top 5 for each. Just pick

a category you want to cast a vote in, use its designated short

code, and text in. Your votes are very much appreciated, and you

receive an awesome discount for Thunder merch just for voting!

I know, I can’t believe it’s December already either, but I’m super

excited it’s here. There are so many wonderful and festive things

that happen this month. There are the obvious ones, like Christmas,

New Year’s, Bowl games, and of course Thunder basketball. But

this is also such a fun time to be in OKC in particular. You can

catch the “Nutcracker” ballet, skate the Devon Ice Rink, sprint the

SandRidge Santa Run, and see Christmas lights galore. Did you

know that there are FREE holiday water taxi rides in December?

Yep, I’ll be catching one of those this year to see all the beautiful

Christmas lights on our city’s canal!

This December issue is a great one! Take a read through our

Holiday Gift Guide, where you’ll find great gift ideas for everyone,

all from local shops here in OKC. I’m also really excited about the

brand-new restaurant we tried out this month called The Meat

Market Refectory. This place is unbelievable. It’s a very “fresh”

new concept for OKC, one that brings the highest-quality organic

products to your table, or to take home with you. That’s right, it’s

a fine dining experience that also offers ingredients used on the

menu for sale in their in-store market. You must check out The

Meat Market Refectory this month.

In October we launched the Okie Honor Awards, and after two

this smart, courageous and sweet gentle giant could

steal your heart. The German Shepherd is the second

most popular dog breed, according to the American

Kennel Club. This pup is fairly easy to train and gets

along great with just about anyone, including children.

These big guys were born to run, so make sure they get

plenty of regular exercise.

DIY: ORNAMENT WREATH

WHAT YOU NEED:

• 16- to 25-inch styrofoam wreath or artificial evergreen wreath

• 50 large-sized and medium-sized bulbs

• 30 mini-sized bulbs

• High-heat glue gun and lots of reloadable glue sticks

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Remove the hardware from the bulb

and discard.

2. Start with the large and medium bulbs

and begin gluing bulbs in random spots

on the inside, outside and on top of the

wreath ring base.

3. Once the first round of bulbs have

dried, began gluing more medium and

large bulbs in place. They can even be

glued directly to the other bulbs rather

than the wreath base at this point.

4. Lastly, start gluing the small bulbs to

fill in the gaps between the large and

medium ones, until the entire wreath is

covered and filled.

3. 1⁄4 cup brandy (optional)

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer

There’s a new king in town – The Meat Market Refectory. This spot reigns

supreme it its use of organic and all-natural ingredients, a concept widely

becoming more popular in our great state, but unfortunately still not executed

in many restaurants. Sitting in a prime area for organic grocers, with several

within a three-mile radius, it’s an area accepting of and accustomed to all-

natural food habits – which makes 63rd and May MMR’s perfect spot. It has

a ritzy and chic Manhattan-esque atmosphere. Just about everything is top-

of-the-line, from the floors and the bar top to the chandeliers, artwork and

monogrammed restroom hand towels. When you encounter monogrammed

restroom hand towels, you know you’re in for a good time. In all seriousness,

I’m in love with MMR’s atmosphere, design and layout. It was completely

branded and designed from top to bottom by executive chef and owner

Steve Spitz – and let me tell you, it’s a major hit. Each menu, brunch, lunch

and dinner, is carefully crafted from scratch, with delicious organic options for

just about every desire. The menu feels equally rounded, and nothing seems

to be “missing.” Each bite left me wanting more. The flavors in each dish are

so distinct, yet they mellow together like they should. You know that point

where you eat yourself sick because it’s that good, you can’t just stop? You’ve

been warned. Also, as a (self-proclaimed) tea connoisseur, I love that MMR

serves Mighty Leaf Teas, a delicious brand that you aren’t likely to come by in

any other Oklahoma restaurant. Only the highest quality across the board for

MMR, and we love it. If you weren’t already blown away by the outstanding

eats and drinks, part of the reason for the name, MMR, is that there is a market

within the restaurant. Guests can purchase various items, like the same cuts

of meat served in-house. Wholesome, hormone and antibiotic free, farm to

table, home cooked and packed with flavor: The Meat Market Refectory is

food as it should be. What a gem has been added to our beloved city. We

couldn’t be bigger fans.

One of the city’s newest restaurants is finally open on 23rd

Street. Guyutes, a project that has been two years in the

making, boasts of their delicious “elevated street food” from

Chef Pat Hart. It’s a great place to get together with friends for

a drink or two, and also stay for a bite to eat. They’re serving

up dishes like pizzas, tacos, salads and something we can’t

wait to try: the Disco Biscuit – open-faced brined and fried

chicken breast served on a cheddar biscuit with spicy honey

butter. Okay, yum! For warmer days, they have a spacious

and eclectic rooftop patio that overlooks Uptown. We have a

feeling Guyutes’s extensive beer collection will go perfectly

centerpiece: it puts out cracker-thin pizzas that you must try.

café. But don’t get discouraged: they welcome anyone, not

just those on bikes. Pelotón has a wonderful patio that is open

to anyone seeking a relaxed environment. This little hidden

gem features an eclectic selection of over 20 beers and

over 50 wines, all while serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

You’ll find eats like pork breakfast tacos, bagels with smoked

salmon, roasted chicken sliders and tuna melts. Stop by after

work, whether on your bike or not, for a great spot to have a

drink, enjoy a snack and mingle with locals. Who knows, you

may find a new hobby in cycling!


WARM SEA SCALLOPS WITH PERSIMMON, FENNEL AND ORANGE

PREPARATION

PERSIMMON, FENNEL AND ORANGE SALAD1. Cut fennel and persimmon in half. Slice very thinly with a mandoline. 2. Cut the orange into segments, then toss together in a large bowl with salt, pepper, yuzu juice

and extra virgin olive oil. 3. Garnish on dish.

WASABI POWDER1. In a food processor, mix together tapioca maltodextrin and powdered sugar. 2. Slowly add wasabi oil in a stream while the machine is running, until powder is fully integrated

into oil and clumps form – it will be something like lumpy biscuit dough. 3. Transfer to a fine-mesh strainer. Push mixture through strainer to create a fine powder. 4. Garnish on dish.

SEARED SEA SCALLOPS1. Pat scallops with dry paper towel and season with salt and pepper and a pinch of cayenne. 2. Heat up a nonstick skillet until very hot. 3. Place the scallops in the pan and sear both sides about 1 to 2 minutes. 4. Add melted butter and continue to cook for another 3 to 4 minutes, then remove from the heat

and serve.

• 1 tbsp EVOO

• 1 tsp yuzu juice

• 2 tbsp butter

• 1⁄2 lb jumbo sea scallops
