“Great hearts steadily send forth the secret forces that in-cessantly draw great events.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Every year on Feb. 14, people worldwide cele-brate relationships by giving from the heart and in the form of a heart. From hearts made

of chocolate to gold heart-shaped pendants, the heart is the reigning insignia of love.

WHERE FROM ART THOU,DEAR HEART

The origin of the heart as the symbol of love crosses con-tinents and ideologies.

In the Bible, there are references denoting emotions in relation to the heart. Exodus 5 through 12, for example: “hardening Pharaoh’s heart” and Genesis 6:5 “thoughts of evil men in their hearts.” In the Book of Jeremiah 17:9, it is written that the Lord is the judge who “tries” the human heart.

HEART MONTH

Aristotle is among early philosophers and scientists who considered the heart as the center of thought, reason or emotion, valuing the heart over the brain.

HEART TAKING SHAPEMany believe the heart icon has been around since man, but they say it wasn’t always shaped as we know it to-day. Some say the shape looked more like a cow’s heart or a combination of female and male organs and simply evolved over time.

Others argue that the heart design was taken from a seed pod. The silphium seed is a type of fennel that was dis-tinctly heart shaped. The Greeks believed the plant was a gift from Apollo, the god of medicine and healing, light and truth. Because it was used to heal, the plant was har-vested to extinction but the “love trademark” lived on. It is believed that the seed became the symbol of love be-cause siliphium was also the most effective natural birth control medicine during that period. Plus, the heart icon was formed by the back and wings of a dove, which was associated with Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love.

MORE THAN LOVEBesides directing our emotions and passions, the heart is a badge well worn in medicine.

The heart is the force behind how long we’ll live to enjoy those love-wrapped relationships.

In keeping with the Valentine spirit, in 1963, the American Heart Association succeeded in their efforts to persuade Congress to establish February as American Heart Month. As Americans wore their hearts on their sleeves in honor of Valentine’s Day, they would also be aware of their own heart and how to care for it. After all, if you haven’t got a heart … you’re not much good to those loved ones, said the Tin Man (the Wizard of Oz).

Heart-related diseases remain the country’s No. 1 killer. The latest statistics from the American Heart Association: (for 2006 – last recorded)• More than 81 million people in the U.S. had some form of cardiovascular disease.• More than 73 million had high blood pressure. • Heart disease claimed 831,272 lives in 2006 – 34.3 per-cent of all deaths.• More than 151,000 Americans killed by heart disease were under age 65. • Coronary heart disease (the fatty buildup of plaque) caused 425,425 deaths in 2006 and continues to be the leading single cause of death in the U.S. today.

The good news is that from 1996 to 2006 the death rate from coronary heart disease declined by 36.4 percent.

GO REDPerhaps the good news is related to the fact that “heart healthy” information has been more available in the past couple of decades. To corroborate the honing in on heart

health, heart disease has traditionally been associated with men, for the most part. In the past few years, however, or-ganizations like Women Heart: The National Association for Women with Heart Disease and Go Red, a program sponsored by the AHA, have raised awareness about heart disease among women, especially with personal stories of women who never thought they would have a heart at-tack.

Go Red has also jumped on the Valentine month bandwagon by setting aside a day in February to publicly acknowledge heart disease in women. Each year on a designated day in February, women throughout the country are encouraged to wear red – the obvious color of Valentine’s Day. This year, the “celebration” of women who have survived heart disease takes place Feb. 5. In many cities around the coun-try, Go Red and business sponsors host luncheons, where heart healthy food is provided, along with women sharing their heartfelt stories about survival.

FOOD FOR THOUGHTHeart issues have become food for thought in this era of obesity and stressful lifestyles. And “food for heart” has been a solid focus in promoting heart healthy living by organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control.

Eating fi ve servings of fruits and vegetables each day used to be the guideline for maintaining a healthy heart. But now the CDC and other organizations are touting seven to 13 cups of produce per day as the best way to achieve the health benefi ts associated with fruits and vegetables. If you’re disheartened by the thought of fi xing all those veggies and trying to eat all those fruits, here are some examples of how to get your heart healthy minimum when

HEARTS A’FLUTTERKeeping the heart healthy includes not only taking care of the physicality of the heart but also the emotional con-nection related to heart. Getting to the heart of the matter are songsters, writ-ers, poets and philosophers.

SONGS OF THE HEARTSingers and songwriters have used “heart” to inspire romance in music.

A sampling of the hundreds of titles with heart: • “Young at Heart” – Frank Sinatra• “Achy Breaky Heart” – Billy Ray Cyrus• “Total Eclipse of the Heart” – Bonnie Tyler• “Where is your Heart” – Kelly Clark-son• “How can you Mend a Broken Heart” – Bee Gees• “Hungry Heart” – Bruce Springsteen• “Your Cheatin’ Heart” – Patsy Cline• “Hungry Heart” – Bruce Springsteen• “Stop Draggin’ my Heart Around” – Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty• “Every Beat of My Heart” – Rod Stewart

Then there are quotes about the heart:

“A joyful heart is the inevitable result of a heart burning with love.”Mother Teresa

“One learns about people through the heart, not the eyes or intellect.”Mark Twain

“If your heart is a volcano, how do you expect fl owers to bloom?”Kahlil Gibran

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter Books With Heart

There are plenty of books out there about how to have a healthy heart in the physical sense, but there are equal-ly as many disseminating encouraging words in the realm of heartache.

“Journey of the Heart” by John Wel-wood is a self-help guide to under-standing the “desires and directions of the human heart.” Welwood gives ad-vice in a poetic kind of style to couples on how to grow in relationships and as individuals.

Dr. Phil McGraw’s wife, Robin, wrote a book about how to live with passion and purpose. “Inside my Heart” made the New York Times bestseller list.

So, take heart this Valentine’s Day. As Dolly Parton (and others) sang, “Put a little love in your heart” (and love your heart with a lot of fruits and veggies).

DECORATING WITH TEXTURE

Like to know more?Kim can be reached

at 719-487-7767

Texture is the surface qual-ity of an object. We experi-ence texture when we touch

objects and feel their roughness, smoothness or patterns. Texture is the artist’s way of mapping these tactile impressions on to the two-dimensional picture. Texture is cre-ated by varying the pattern of light and dark areas on an object. Notice how the areas of light and dark give the impression of depth to the im-age below.

Patterns and textures will serve an important function in your deco-rating. They will add interest and character to an otherwise plain color scheme. Your choice of pat-terns and textures will follow your decorating style, the limitations of your environment and you personal preferences.

When we refer to a wood fl oor’s tex-ture, we’re usually referring to the amount of grain or “texture” a par-ticular wood fl oor has. Some wood fl oors such as oak and pine have a lot of grain, so have a rougher feel or texture then other wood fl oors such as maple, which tends to have

less grain and a smoother fi nish.

Different types of fi nish coatings that are applied to the wood fl oor will also tend to change the texture. For example, a heavy polyurethane fi nish coating will have a smoother texture than a wax fi nish might.

The texture of a wood fl oor should be taken into consideration when planning your decorating scheme. As we discussed when we talked about species, the type of wood fl oor you choose will generally de-termine the fi nished look you will get. A rougher or grainier texture will produce a more rustic casual look where a smoother texture will give you a more formal look.

By following these rules of thumb you can wisely select patterns to en-hance any room:

• Complex Patterns that use several colors and diagonal, criss-crossing lines are busy for your eye. They can liven up a large area, but it may be overwhelming for a small room.

• Vertical Lines add height to a

short room, or add more height to a high ceiling.

• Horizontal Lines add space, width to an area.

• Remember the Size and Scale of your space. General rule of thumb, the larger the space, the larger the print, the smaller the space the smaller the print. Yet adding a large print to a small area can give you a feeling of grandeur.

• The same Grouping or Pattern used throughout an area can draw together a wide open plan. It will create a fl ow and sense of continu-ity.

• Texture affects color. Rough tex-tures will absorb light while smooth textures will refl ect light.

• Think of Hardwood as a Fashion Investment - Selecting the type of wood and fi nish that that harmoniz-es with the rest of your decorating theme will make everything come to life.

SNIPPETZ®: THE LOCAL SCOOP

Heatwaves Tanning Salon was purchased by Brad and Kyrsten Dail in December ’09. It has

been totally remodeled and is now open under the new name of Tri-Lakes Tiki Tans, Inc.

The business remains located in the Monument Shopping Center behind Rosie’s Diner. To address the needs of their customers, the new operating hours are from 8am – 9pm, Monday through Sunday. For those valued cus-tomers who had purchased a tanning package from “Heatwaves Tanning Salon” during the month of Novem-ber 2009, Tri-Lakes Tiki Tans, Inc will honor them until March 1, 2010. Brad says, “We look forward to serving the Tri-Lakes area with our remodeled lo-cation and our family atmosphere.

Kyrsten, has been a career tanner for several years, enjoys meeting and greeting people and has tanned at dif-

ferent locations over the years and has compiled what she likes and dislikes and has brought that out in Tri-Lakes Tiki Tans, Inc.” Brad, who isn’t a tan-ner enjoys meeting new people and providing a service in this small town that is “above the bar and is tailored to you the customer.”

Tiki Tans has 5 lay-down beds, 1 stand-up booth, spray tanning by appoint-ment only and a water massage bed. Kyrsten offered, “We will be offering year-round bathing suites and beach at-tire for all your vacation needs.

So, if you’re getting ready for a vaca-tion, a special event or just wanting to relax, stop by and see us for the best rates in town.” Brad and Kyrsten are looking forward to meeting you and their resident dog “Toby” looks for-ward to greeting everyone. They are excited and shared, “Thanks again for your support! The Dail family.”

Eighth graders from nineteen Colorado Springs middle schools compete annually to decide who

can best express in an essay “What Freedom Means to Me”. The contest is sponsored by eleven local Sertoma Clubs and is the traditional focal point of Sertoma’s National Heritage Program.

At the local school level, 8th grade students participate by writing a 400 word essay stating their interpretation of the meaning of freedom. Sertomans in the sponsoring clubs judge the essays to choose 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners from each school. The winners receive a prize, usually a treasury bond or cash and a plaque.

The fi rst place winners then compete with the participants from middle schools across Colorado Springs. A committee of volunteers judges these entries and selects fi rst, second and third places. All the winners, their parents, teachers and principals are invited to attend the Sertoma Freedom Banquet which this year occurs on February 17 at the Crown Plaza Hotel. The top three essays are presented by the student authors and they receive a savings bond, a plaque and a U.S. fl ag that has fl own over the capitol in Washington D.C.

One winner from the 2009 contest, J.P. Corr of Creekside Middle School, writes of freedom this way :

SERTOMA FREEDOM ESSAY CONTEST

“ My mom is an Easter lily born in the seat of oppression in Montgomery, Alabama during the heart of the civil rights movement. In contrast, my dad is an African warrior born in Gambia, the gateway of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. My parents met each other because of the realization of freedom, thanks to the many struggles by our predecessors to provide this liberty.

To me, freedom is the story of my dad’s journey to pursue the American Dream, which resulted in my existence through the inimitable gift of life. “

J.P.’s expression is exemplary of the quality and sincerity with which the students approach this contest.

The Sertoma International President who this year is Julie Hejtmanek from Topeka, Kansas, will attend the banquet. She will recognize the eighth grade students for their exemplary work and will be the principal speaker of the evening.

The essay contest is a part of Sertoma’s National Heritage Program that promotes freedom, democracy and patriotism in local communities. The three main activities of the National Heritage effort include distribution of the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution, the Freedom Essay Contest and fl ag displays throughout the community. Tai Yi Energy Practitioner - Tami Urbanek

Under mental, emotional, or physical stress? Low immune system? Anxiety? Depression? Lack of focus?

Tai Yi means Supreme Movement and is an ancient form of Chinese energy work that is similar to acupuncture and can assist in many ailments.

TAI YI-CAN

SOMEONEHEAL YOU?

Can someone heal you? The short and simple answer is NO. It is impossible to heal

an individual because the individual has to be willing to heal and has to be willing to do the work of healing. Assistance can be offered to some-one who wants to heal, but some-one else cannot heal another person. Healing someone places the respon-sibility on the healer, rather than the individual who is seeking to heal.

There are healers who proclaim to heal people. It is important to be aware of such statements. Someone who proclaims to heal people is tak-ing the responsibility for a person’s healing. This is a form of control, though many do not recognize it as such. Many recognize ‘control’ as more overt and manipulative. While control is manipulative, many times it is covert. Attempting to control someone would need to be covert if it were to continue. If the con-trol were obvious, the person being manipulated would probably stop allowing it. If a healer states he or she can ‘heal you’, take precaution. One would need to look at the intent of the healer. A true healing ONLY comes from the individual seeking to heal. “That which was…is…un-til understood and healed.” Jonah.

Meaning: an issue does not simply ‘go away’ on its own or because someone took it away. It remains until understood and healed.

Tai Yi is an ancient Chinese form of alternative healing using specifi c ex-ercises/treatments that can ASSIST with healing. Tai Yi (pronounced Tie Yee) means supreme movement or supreme balance and is similar to acupuncture. In fact, acupuncture is a form of healing that is the result of Tai Yi. Tai Yi is a very powerful healing modality that can assist one in resolving issues around a low im-mune function, stress, depression, memories, anger, fear, and many other ailments.

Tai Yi consists of 4,000 exercises. Each exercise is set up through a grid system on the body that is aligned with pressure points and meridians on the body. A Tai Yi practitioner then sends Universal Energy into the same pressure points. The pres-sure points direct where the energy fl ows within the body.

The person receiving the treatment MUST allow the energy and MUST use the energy after the treatment. Otherwise the treatment was a waste of time and money. This places the healing responsibility onto the per-son seeking assistance, rather than the healer. When the person seeking assistance takes full responsibility for healing, the depth of healing that occurs is very deep.

SNIPPETZ®: PET PAGE / REAL ESTATE

Rollo is a 1 1/2 year old male Border Collie. He lives with many dogs and gets along well

with them. We are not sure how Rollo will do with cats. He’s a sweet boy but will need some extra training and we know that he’ll do well. Rollo would probably do very well in a home that has someone home with him most of the time. Border Collies are an intelligent breed. This breed has an instinctive desire to work closely and intensely with a human handler.

In an appropriate home, with a dedicated, active owner, a Border Collie can be an excellent companion. Though they can be a wonderful choice for some households, Border Collies are not perfect pets for all people. These dogs are generally not suitable for households with small children. Many Border Collies that end up in shelters or with rescue groups are there because owners, who may have been attracted by their appearance and intelligence, were not prepared to meet their dog’s daily activity needs.

If you think Rollo would fi t into your loving family and you would like to adopt him, please call SAINT Animal Rescue located in Calhan. Our phone number is 541-3099 but you might need to use the 719 area code.

It is always a challenge when adopting a new pet. SAINT Animal Rescue asks the adopter to give the animal a reasonable amount of time to adjust to

it’s new family and environment. This is so very important to your new family member as well as your existing family members.

Please visit our website at saintanimalrescue.org and as always thank you for caring.

Did you know: The phrase “Dog Days of Summer” comes from an ancient Roman belief.

It was believed that the Dog star, Sirius, gave off a lot of heat and caused higher temperatures during the months of June, July, and August.

Under the terms of the legisla-tion, “current homeowners”must have lived in their homefor five consecutive years overthe previous eight to be eligi-ble.

The credit can only be claimedon primary residences pur-chased for less than$800,000.

And as long as you use theproperty as your primary resi-dence for three or more yearsafter the purchase, you don'thave to pay it back.

Furthermore, buyers canclaim the credit on your2009 taxes, even if the pur-chase was made in 2010 byfiling an amended return.

The income limits are $75,000for individual taxpayers and$150,000 for married couplesfiling jointly.

Persons who are claimed by ataxpayer as dependents orwho are under the age of 18do not qualify for a tax credit.

Also, home purchases fromrelatives do not qualify.

SLEEPPOSITION AND

HEARTBURNDEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have had acid refl ux for quite some time, and doc-tors have prescribed different medicines, the last being omeprazole. Medicines were not relieving the burning pain. The best advice came from an online mes-sage board that said to “sleep on your left side.” Figuring it wouldn’t hurt to try this method, I began sleeping on my left side. Once my body learned to stay in that position, the pain does not bother me now at all at night. Why don’t doc-tors share such simple methods for re-lief rather than prescribing medications? Please pass this information on to others. -- N.S.

ANSWER: When it works, a change in sleeping position is a simple way to deal with a big problem. It doesn’t work for everyone. In fact, it works for only a few, but it’s still valuable advice and is something that should be suggested more often. A change in sleeping position also can work for snoring. Sleeping on the side, right or left, can open up the throat and stop snoring. Redundant throat tis-sue, like a reed in a wind instrument, lies behind snoring. Sewing a pocket in the back of the pajamas and putting either a tennis ball or a marble in it keeps snorers off their backs.

Other self-help tips for GERD (gastroe-sophageal refl ux disease, heartburn or acid indigestion -- all are the same con-dition) include staying away from foods that cause it. Onions, garlic, coffee, carbonated beverages, alcohol, choco-late, fried and fatty foods, citrus fruits

and juices, tomato sauces, peppermint, spearmint and spicy foods are notorious troublemakers.

Sleeping with the head of the bed elevat-ed is another way to keep stomach acid in the stomach. Prop 6- or 8-inch blocks under the posts at the head of the bed. In this position, gravity keeps stomach acid in the stomach.

Chewing gum stimulates saliva produc-tion, and saliva is a natural antacid.

Don’t wear tight garments or tight belts, both of which promote acid refl ux. I man-aged to get through this answer without mentioning a single medicine, not even Tums.

The booklet on GERD -- heartburn -- pro-vides an insight into this common mala-dy and its treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 501W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: There seems to be a vaccine for everything except strep throat. My kids get it at the drop of a hat. Their pediatrician claims that ton-sillectomies don’t work. Is there a pos-sibility of a vaccine? -- K.T.

ANSWER: There is a possibility of a strep vaccine. Doctors currently are working on it.

Is the doctor sure that these repeated sore throats are strep throats? The only defi -nite proof is a culture of the throat or spe-cifi c tests for the strep germ. Most sore throats are viral-caused.

If a child has severe and frequent strep throats, removing the tonsils lessens the number of infections. “Frequent” means seven or more infections in one year or fi ve or more in the preceding two years.

***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will in-corporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or re-quest an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

One of my neighbors recently received a phone call from a well-known charity organi-

zation asking for donations. At least she thought it was the same orga-nization calling. It wasn’t. It was a scam, with the thieves using well-known charity names to bilk people out of money.Rule of thumb: If someone is pres-suring you to make a purchase or donation by phone, hang up. It’s your phone and you can take charge of whom you’re willing to talk to. Unless you make the call, you can’t be sure who’s at the other end.

The Internet continues to be a nightmare of potential scams if you accidentally put in too much infor-mation or if you make a purchase online.

Rule of thumb: Have two e-mail addresses. Use one for family and friends. Use a second one for every-

thing else and where an e-mail ad-dress is required.

Not all scams arrive by telephone or mail. Sometimes they come right to your door. The coming 2010 Census is going to be a problem in some respects in that the scammers will take that opportunity to knock on your door and ask for informa-tion. Or, they could send fraudulent e-mail that appears to be from the U.S. Census Bureau. Look at the Census site (www.census.gov) and read what you can expect if some-one from the Census comes to your door or sends e-mail.

Rule of thumb: The Census Bureau won’t send you anyone to your door asking for your Social Security number, credit-card information, debit-card PIN codes or personal information. If you receive e-mail that looks like it might be from the Census Bureau, don’t take any chances. Delete it, without click-ing on any links in the e-mail. If you have questions about Census e-mail you receive or someone who has come to your door, call the Cen-sus Bureau at 1-800-392-6975 or 1-800-523-3205.

Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

• A giant carnivorous plant has recently been discovered on a remote mountain-top in the Philippines. The second larg-est pitcher plant on record, nepenthes at-tenboroughii secretes a nectar that lures insects, frogs and even rats into its trap, where enzymes and acids break down the animal and digest it.

• There has been a lot of debate about whether older drivers should be re-quired to pass driving tests in order to renew their licenses, with failing sight and diminished judgment being cited as reasons for the more stringent require-ment. However, statistics tend to indi-cate that, as a group, teenagers are the more dangerous drivers, with their auto-accident death rate roughly triple that of the elderly.

WEDNESDAY ISCATFISH DAY!

CRAB STUFFED AVOCADO

1 ea Avocado3 oz Crab Meat2 Tbs Real Mayonnaise 1 Tbs Finely Diced Celery1 Tbs Finely Diced Onion¼ tsp Garlic Powder¼ tsp Onion Powderpinch White Pepper

1. Combine all ingredients except avocado and mix well.

2. Split avocado and remove seed and skin.

3. Divide crab salad between avo-cado halves and serve.

As I have said before, avocados are very good for you. They

are full of vitamin A and rich in B complex vitamins. They are very high in protein and though they are high in fat it is the fat that is good for you. The avocado was fi rst discov-ered in Mexico over 7,000 years ago and wasn’t com-mercially grown in California until the late 1800’s and in Florida until the turn of the century. The avocado is tech-nically a fruit but often treated as a vegetable. Because it is a fruit it should never be place in the fridge.

The crab in the salad can be replaced with boiled shrimp, lobster or baked/smoked fi sh. Chicken could also be used. If you want to make this more of a meal try placing the avocado on a bed of lettuce and adding some tomato and egg wedges. The salad could also be used on crackers or on a sandwich with some fresh sliced toma-toes and lettuce. On the piers in San Francisco you can get yummy little sandwiches with a crab or lobster salad on a sour dough roll, always with real mayonnaise. That is al-ways a stop I have to make while there.

Be creative, have fun

and enjoy!!!

PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Hot August Night/NYC: Live From Mad-ison Square Garden” -- One Neil Diamond; four sold-out nights; 26 hit songs (27 if you count the fact that he sings “Sweet Caro-line” TWICE). Recorded in August 2008, Neil proves that even though he’s 112

years old, he still has the pipes to belt out a great show. The DVD also includes the featurette “Welcome Home, Neil,” about Diamond’s pilgrimage to his boyhood home in Brooklyn.

“The Time Traveler’s Wife” -- Eric Bana stars as Henry, a librarian who is blessed/cursed with the power to travel through time. He can’t control this power, so he doesn’t know where in time he’ll end up or for how long. Rachel McAdams co-stars as Clare, his wife. Henry fi nds himself ap-pearing during various points in Clare’s life, and the two are forced to somehow make the relationship work, knowing that Henry will disappear at any point.

I thought “The Time Traveler’s Wife” was OK. Not a great romantic fi lm, but it didn’t suck, either. If you’re looking for a very good Rachel McAdams romance fi lm, then rent or buy “The Notebook.” If you’re look-

ing for a great romantic movie with a time-travel plot, then by all means fi nd a copy of 1980’s “Somewhere in Time,” starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. And if you thought “The Time Traveler’s Wife” had a hokey premise, Chris Reeve’s ability to travel back in time involves him getting dressed in old-timey clothes and Wishing Real Hard.

“Studio One: Twelve Angry Men” -- Most of us are more familiar with the 1957 Sid-ney Lumet production starring Lee J. Cobb and Martin Balsam, but “Twelve Angry Men” was originally a made-for-TV play that aired in 1954, starring Norman Fell and Robert Cummings. This riveting drama about a jury deciding the fate of a teen boy accused of stabbing his father to death won three Emmys and is still as relevant today as it was more than a half-century ago.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your natu-ral Arian leadership qualities make you the person others will follow in tackling that important project. But don’t get so in-volved in the work that you neglect your personal life.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Aspects fa-vor sorting through your possessions, both at work and at home, to start giving away what you don’t use, don’t need or don’t like. Relax later with someone special.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The is-sues are not quite as clear as they should be. That’s why you need to avoid getting involved in disputes between colleagues at work or between relatives or personal friends.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’ll get lots of support from others if you own up to your mistake quickly and include a full and honest explanation. Learn from this experi-ence so that you don’t repeat it.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) There might be some early confusion over a major move, whether it’s at work or at home. But once you get a full breakdown of what it entails, it should be easier to deal with. Good luck.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Cre-ating order out of chaos, even in the most untidy spaces, should be no problem for organized Virgos. So go ahead and do it, and then accept praise from impressed col-leagues.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Whether it’s for business purposes or just for leisure, a trip might be just what you need right now. You would benefi t both from a change of scenery and from meet-ing new people.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While things generally go well this week, a romantic situation seems to have stalled. But you can restart it if you want to. Then again, maybe this is a chance to reassess the situation.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to Decem-ber 21) A meeting that was promised quite a while back could fi nally happen. So be sure you’re prepared with everything you’ll need to make your case sound convincing and doable.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to Janu-ary 19) A workplace blunder could create a problem down the line unless you deal with it right now to see how and why it happened. Don’t be surprised at what you might learn.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time to re-sort your priorities and see if adjustments are called for. Be honest with yourself as you decide what to keep, what to discard and what to change.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Let-ting yourself be bathed in the outpouring of love and support from those who care for you will help you get through a diffi cult period sooner rather than later. Good luck.

BORN THIS WEEK: You have an uncan-ny gift for reaching out to all people and creating bridges of understanding among them.

FINANCIAL FOCUS

WHEN EVALUATING INVESTMENTS,

LOOK AT VALUE - NOT JUST PRICE

Provided by Adam Graysonof EdwardJones Investments

Most investors pay a great deal of attention to the price of their investments

— yesterday’s price, today’s price, tomorrow’s price, next year’s price and so on. And that’s understandable, because we always want the prices of our investments to rise. Yet, if you focus too much on prices, you could end up making some costly mistakes.

Why? Because price-driven behavior is emotional behavior — and as an investor, you’re much better off making decisions with your head, not your heart. Suppose, for example, that you’ve seen a steep decline in the price of one of your investments. After a while, you may feel that you just can’t take it anymore and you decide to “cut your losses” by selling the investment. Conversely, you may have an investment that has gone up and up — and to grab even bigger gains, you buy more shares.

Both these decisions could backfi re on you. When you sold the investment whose price had fallen, you might fi nd yourself on the investment “sidelines” if that same investment starts to turn around. And when you throw more money at an investment whose price has skyrocketed, you’re betting against history — because no investment goes up forever. Furthermore, in both cases, your emotions will have led you to violate one of the guidelines of investing: buy low and sell high.

But apart from the tactical errors you may make when you over-concentrate on price movements, you’re also ignoring another key characteristic of investments — their value.

Traditionally, an investment’s “value” has been largely defi ned as whether or not it’s considered “expensive” or “cheap.” That’s why many investors take a close look at a stock’s price-to-earnings ratio (P/E). Generally speaking, a high P/E means a stock is more expensive, relative to its earnings, than a stock with a low P/E. Investors may be willing to pay more for the high P/E stocks because they feel these companies will be worth more in the future.

But P/E doesn’t tell the whole story of investment value. Any individual investment may have value to you because it can help you diversify your holdings. And while diversifi cation, by itself, can’t guarantee a profi t or protect against a loss, it can help you reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio. For instance, if your portfolio is heavy with stocks, the presence of some bonds — even those whose market price has fallen because interest rates have risen — can help reduce the impact of a downturn that primarily affects stocks.

Clearly, the value of any investment has several dimensions — any or all of which may be valuable to you as your pursue your goals. So, as you build, maintain and adjust your portfolio over time, keep an eye on the changing prices of your investments — but don’t overlook their true value.

MID-WINTER HOME CHECKMany places in the country that don’t typi-

cally experience harsh winter weather have seen records broken for low tem-

peratures and snowfall. Even if you’re used to hard winters, it makes sense to check the mid-winter con-dition of your home because winter isn’t over yet.

From a distance, check your roof with binoculars. Are any shingles missing? Look carefully around skylights, vents and chimneys.

While you’re outside, check to see if the dryer vent is closed. If it’s stuck in the open position, it cre-ates access for cold air and creatures. If you haven’t drained the outside faucet, it’s worthwhile to do so even if you live in an area that is generally warm. Check downspouts to make sure they’re aimed away from the house and that water hasn’t accumulated next to the foundation.

If you have an attic, check inside for any wet spots on the plywood. If the attic is especially cold, con-sider putting down another layer of insulation. (If you’re going to do it yourself, get guidance at the hardware store about whether you need insulation batts with or without the vapor barrier. In the wrong place, that vapor barrier can cause moisture damage to the rafters.) Hold a lighter around the attic access to see if there are any drafts.

Use that same lighter around windows and doors. Seal windows inside with a clear plastic sheeting kit, the kind that shrinks with a hair dryer, or put up insulated drapes. Install a draft guard at the bottom of exterior doors.

If you have an unheated basement, consider install-ing heat tape around the water pipes. Read the in-structions carefully: Tape wrapped over itself is a fi re hazard. Heat tape will only add a very small amount to your electric bill, especially when compared to the cost of fi xing any frozen and cracked pipes. At the same time, check the heating ductwork. Look for air leaks and seal them with foil tape. (Oddly enough, duct tape doesn’t seem to do well in this instance.) Consider adding insulation to ductwork: Over half the value of the heated air is lost before it gets into the rooms above if ducts aren’t insulated.Check the basement for leaks or moisture. Run a dehumidifi er if necessary to keep mold from getting started.

With apologies to Mel Brooks: It is good to be the King! Or, in Colorado in any event, to be the employer rather than the

employee.

Occasionally I have clients who come to my fi rm when they are starting a business, or buying a busi-ness, and they don’t want to have a Colorado lim-ited liability entity for their business; instead, they believe they are better off with a Nevada corpora-tion, or some other such entity. Usually, this is be-cause of stories they’ve been told by (non-attorney) friends, or “information” they have picked up on the Internet. However, the fact is that Colorado is one of the most business friendly, and employer friendly, states in the United States. Take advantage of it!

With respect to employment law, Colorado is an “at will” employment state. In other words, if there is no employment contract between you and your employees, you can fi re them at any time, for any reason, or for no reason at all. Now, it is true that if you don’t have “cause” for an employee’s termina-tion, they will be able to collect unemployment in-surance benefi ts (which, if you fi re enough people, can end up raising the rates you pay to the state); however, that terminated employee probably will not be able to sue you (if they try, it most likely will be dismissed by the courts).

The State of Colorado has no employment discrimi-nation laws applicable to private employers (certain cities in Colorado, not in El Paso, Douglas or Teller Counties, are another story). The only law protecting employees of private employers in Colorado is the

Colorado Wage Claim Act, which basically requires an employer to pay its employees for their services actually rendered or time actually worked, within a certain period of time after termination. Other than that, as far as Colorado is concerned, you can fi re anyone at any time, even for a horrible, evil, arbi-trary or discriminatory reason. Likewise, as far as the State of Colorado is concerned, you can refuse to hire anyone for any reason, or no reason at all, even for a horrible, evil, arbitrary or discriminatory reason. And an employer pretty much can be as un-reasonable, cruel or arbitrary as he or she wants to be towards an employee during employment, short of violating criminal laws, not paying the employee, or not providing required breaks.

Of course, there is federal law to consider. As you know, the United States is a federation of indepen-dent states, and thus employers must abide by fed-eral laws as well as state laws. Federal employment laws encompass, for example: (1) employment dis-crimination (Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, PDA, etc.); (2) workplace safety (OSHA); (3) rates of pay and maximum hours (FLSA); and (4) collective bar-gaining (unions). With respect to termination or hir-ing decisions, the only applicable federal laws are the employment discrimination laws.

However, the vast majority of employers in Colo-rado do not meet the defi nition of an “employer” for the purposes of virtually all federal employ-ment discrimination laws. The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) defi nes an “employer” as a business employing at least fi fteen employees. The FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) defi nes an “employer” as a business employing at least fi fty employees. Most federal laws defi ne an “employer” as a business employing at least twenty-fi ve em-ployees. As the vast majority of businesses do not employ more than even fi fteen employees, it is evi-dent that most businesses need not worry about fed-eral employment laws in deciding whom to hire and whom to fi re. Yes, it’s good to be the King!
