Había una vez un cocodrilo que se llamaba

Raudo. Era bastante pequeño pero tenía unhocico grande y muchos dientes puntiagudos

de todo tamaño. Nadaba por la superficie de su

laguna de modo que sus grandes ojos

redondos y brillantes sobresalían del agua.

Miraba a la derecha y luego a la izquierda, y

cuando nadaba veía toda la laguna.

Pensaba: Esta laguna es mi hogar. No quería

que otros jugaran en su laguna. Creía quele pertenecía.

A veces los flamencos se metían al agua con

sus patas largas y le preguntaban:

¿Podemos entrar un rato a la laguna?

Pero Raudo respondía bruscamente:

¡No! Esta es mi laguna y no quiero que haya

flamencos en ella.

En ocasiones las grandes y redondas tortugas

con su duro caparazón se le acercaban y

le preguntaban: ¡Ey, Raudo! ¿Te parece bien

que nos sentemos en la esquina de la laguna

donde no es hondo?

Y Raudo volvía a responder con brusquedad:

¡No, no quiero queustedes me abarroten

mi laguna! ¡Es mi

laguna y sólo yo puedo

estar en ella!

Once upon a time there lived a crocodile

named Snap. He was green and scaly, andhad a long snout and lots of pointy, jagged

teeth. He swam just below the surface of his

pond, so that his big, beady eyes poked out

of the water. He would look to the right, and

then he would look to the left, and he would

watch the whole pond as he swam around.

This pond is my home, Snap said to

himself. He didnt want anyone else comingto play in his pond. He thought it was his

very own.

Sometimes the flamingos would wade into

the water on their long legs. Can we come

into the pond for a while?

But Snap would go snap! No! This is my

pond, and I dont want any flamingos in it.

Sometimes the big, round, hard shelled

tortoises would come waddling up. Hey,

Snap! Do you mind if we go sit in the corner

of the pond, where the shallow water is?

Snap snapped again, No, I dont want you

cluttering up my pond! This is my special

pond and

only I can

stay in it.



Snap made the other animals feel sad. He

would even snap at the beautiful birds that

would stop for a drink of water from the

pond. He would scare them and they would

fly away.

It wasnt long before Snap began feelinglonely because nobody came around the

pond anymore. Snap just swam by himself to

one end of the pond, and then he would

swim back. He had worked so hard at

protecting his pond, but now he was very

lonely. One day, he thought, Im going to

explore the area and see what else is around.

Soon he arrived at another pond. The pondwas pretty small and the water was very

murky, but it was full of animals! They were

having so much fun. A chubby hippopotamus

was rolling over and over in the mud. The

tortoises were playing catch, chasing each

other up and down the side of the pond. A

bunch of tall, beautiful flamingos were

standing and splashing in the water. Other

beautiful, brightly colored birds fluttered

around, interested to see what all the fun was

about.

Snap hid himself in a bush just outside the

pond and watched everybody playing. They

seemed to be having such a good time. Snap

was afraid they might see him and send him

away, like he hadsent them away,

so he soon

crawled out of

his bush and went

scurrying back to

his own pond.

Raudo hacía que los otros animales se

pusieran tristes. Hasta les hablaba con

dureza a las hermosas aves que se detenían

a beber un poco de agua de la laguna. Las

asustaba y se iban volando.

No pasó mucho tiempo hasta que Raudocomenzó a sentirse solo porque ya nadie iba

a la laguna. Nadaba de un extremo al otro.

Se había preocupado mucho por proteger su

día pensó: Voy a explorar la zona y ver qué

hay por ahí.

Caminó por el lugar y pronto llegó a otra

laguna. Era bastante pequeña y el agua eramuy turbia, ¡pero estaba llena de animales!

Los animales se divertían mucho. Había un

gran hipopótamo muy rellenito,

revolcándose una y otra vez en el barro. Un

par de tortugas jugaban a perseguirse, y

corrían de un lado a otro de la laguna. Varios

altos y bellos flamencos rosados estaban de

pie salpicando agua. Hermosas y coloridas

aves volaban alrededor de la laguna,

curiosas por averiguar el motivo de tanta

diversión.

Raudo se escondió detrás de un arbusto

frente a la laguna y observó cómo jugaban

todos. Parecían estar pasándola muy bien.

Raudo tenía miedo de que lo fueran a ver y

lo echaran de la

misma manera

en que él los

echaba a ellos,

así que salió

arrastrándose del

arbusto y se fue

a su laguna.



Snap sat in his pond all by himself.

He felt very sad as he remembered

all the animals that had tried to

come and play in his pond, and

how he had sent them away. Nowhe was very sorry.

W hat can I do to get the animals to

come and play in my pond? he

thought.

Snap went waddling back over to

the other pond. As soon as he got

there, he stuck his head out of the

bushes and went snap! All the

animals stopped what they were

doing. They slowly looked around.

For a moment they were worried,

and thought, Oh no! W hat is Snap

coming to tell us now? They

thought he might have more nasty

things to say to them.

But Snap was different now. Hey,

everybody! Im sorry that I was

nasty to you. You can come and

play in my big pond, if youd like.

The animals all looked at each

other. Wed like that! they all

chorused.

Raudo estaba sentado solo en su

laguna. El sentía muy triste. Se

acordó de todos los animales que

habían querido ir a jugar en su

laguna y cómo los había echado.Ahora se arrepentía de haberlo

hecho.

Pensó: ¿Qué puedo hacer para

que los animales vengan a jugar a

mi laguna?

Raudo se fue caminando hasta la

otra laguna. Apenas llegó, ¡sacó lacabeza del arbusto e hizo un ruido

seco! Todos los animales hicieron

una pausa y lentamente miraron a

su alrededor. Por un momento se

preocuparon y pensaron: ¡Uy, no!

¿Qué nos dirá ahora?

Pero Raudo había cambiado y

les dijo: ¡Hola a todos! Lamento

haber sido antipático con ustedes.

Los invito a jugar en mi gran

laguna.

Los animales se miraron y

respondieron a coro: ¡Nos

encantaría!



The animals followed Snap back to his

pond.

Henry, the big hippo, went wob, wob, wob,

wob as he wobbled over to the pond.

Wow! Look at this mud hole! heexclaimed when he saw Snaps pond. The

hole was two or three times as big as the

mud hole in their old pond. Henry dove

into it. Slosh! He slipped and slid around in

the mud, and had so much fun.

The four graceful flamingos were delighted

to join Snaps lovely pond, as theyd always

wanted to. And as for the tortoises, theyhad a great time chasing each other up and

down the pond.

Snap sat on the side of the pond, happy to

see all his new friends having so much fun.

In the days that passed, more and more

animals came by Snaps pond. Word had

spread that it was the best pond in thearea.

Snap was very happy that he had learned

to share, because when he shared, he was

blessed with

friends in

return.

Los animales siguieron a Raudo hasta su

laguna.

Enrique, el gran hipopótamo, caminó

tambaleándose en dirección a la laguna.

¡Vaya! ¡Miren ese hueco de barro!exclamó cuando vio la laguna de Raudo. El

hueco era dos o tres veces más grande que

el que había en la otra laguna. Enrique se

puso a chapotear en el lodo y se divirtió

muchísimo.

Los cuatro bellos flamencos estaban

encantados de ver todos esos peces. En

cuanto a las tortugas, se la pasaron muybien jugando a perseguirse de un lado a otro

de la laguna.

Raudo se sentó a un costado de la laguna,

feliz de ver cómo se divertían sus

nuevos amigos.

En los días que siguieron más y más

animales llegaron a la laguna de Raudo,

pues se había propagado la noticia de que

era la mejor laguna de la zona.

Raudo estaba muy contento de haber

aprendido a compartir, porque cuando lo

hacía, a cambio

ganaba amigos.
