Safety In Traffic JamsAs traffic jams become more and more a part of daily life in Nairobi, it’s important to note that thugs are taking advantage of this. It’s easy to become complacent and even bored while waiting for traffic to move. Below are general safety tips to consider:* Keep your doors locked at all times* Keep your windows up. If it’s hot and you don’t have air conditioning, crack the windows enough to allow air to get in, but not enough for a hand or arm to fit through.* Do not read the newspaper or text or answer emails on your phone. Thugs look for targets that aren’t paying attention. It’s best to constantly monitor what is going on around you and be aware at all times. If you have a driver, make sure he is also alert and observing his surroundings.* There are a lot of hawkers that are legitimately selling things in the traffic. However, there are also reports of thugs posing as hawkers in order to get you to roll your window down in order to rob you. If you do decide to buy something, put your window down just low enough to make the transaction and then roll it up again.* If someone bumps your vehicle and pushes the side mirror in, do not roll your window down and push it out again. This is an old ruse used by thugs to gain access to your vehicle.* Keep all valuables out of site.

In keeping with the acceptable practice worldwide, visitors are

advised not to leave cash and valuables in their hotel rooms but to make use of hotel safe deposit boxes or safes. Visitors should not carry large sums of money on their person while walking on the streets. Lady visitors are advised to be careful with their handbags in crowded places and busy streets.

Tips to consinder to ensure your home security

Necklaces and jewellery should be left at home or kept in the hotel custody. As in all major cities walking at night alone should be avoided. Never leave valuables on show in unattended car or tour bus. Kenya has an efficient police force as well as special tourist police unit with highly trained officers. Most hotels also employ experienced

security personnel but you must take the precautions you would anywhere else in the world.
