    PRESIDENT’S LETTER – Lew Leichter

November 2015 John Gierach on hooking big bass in hot weather:

"How the hell am I supposed to set up harder with a beer in my hand? " ”But of course the answer is obvious, you can fish and drink at the same time, but you can't do both well.”

CHASING STEELHEAD (THE FISH OF A THOUSAND CASTS)

I just proved how true this is. Just got back from a day on the Klamath, two days on the Trinity, and a day on the Feather with my grandson Shane. I can count the steelies netted on one hand. Fortunately I spent a day on the Delta with Art and Mark Pinto on the way home catching a good number of stripers and some largemouth bass on top water flies. I have a couple days to reorganize before I head for Pyramid.

ELECTION TIME Your current board has agreed to stay on for 2016. We could really use some help on some of our committees and ask that if you're willing to help you contact one of the committee members listed on the last page of the newsletter. VERY SPECIFICALLY ART CHAPMAN REALLY NEEDS TWO MEMBERS WILLING TO HELP HIM MAINTAIN OUR WEBSITE. WE'RE DOWN TO ONE PERSON AND THAT IS NOT A GOOD SITUATION.

    NOVEMBER MEETING

Rich Chubon was going to do his bone fishing program for us. In a senior moment he forgot he would be at our outing at Scott River Lodge that night. As penance, Rich was tasked with finding an alternative program and came up with a real winner. We will show the film "Rocky Mountain Fly Highway". (see below for info)

    SLFF Tying Group Jim Snodgrass

The next fly tying session will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on Thursday, November 5th at 6:30pm.

Soft Hackle Peacock The next fly tying session will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on Thursday, November 5th at 6:30. Paul Crafts will demonstrate how to tie the Soft Hackle Peacock…a fly that imitates a number of aquatic insects. Paul became interested in the Soft Hackle Peacock after reading an article in the California Flyfisher magazine in August. He had been tying soft hackled nymphs and flymphs, so decided to give the Soft Hackle Peacock a try. Paul feels that the patterns is fairly simple, except for the hackle part…which is where Paul can offer some advice not found in the article or on the internet. Tier and videographer, Tim Flagler offers step by step instructions for tying a version of the Soft Hackle Peacock (Peacock and Partridge) at the web site: http://midcurrent.com/videos/how-to-tie-a-peacock-and-partridge/. According to Tim, the Peacock and Partridge is a fly pattern that’s older than dirt yet still remarkably effective. Using just a few materials, it’s easy to tie and it could represent a whole slew of aquatic insects in various stages of life, anything from a cased caddis to a crippled mayfly dun. Tim prefers to add a couple of modern upgrades like a fluorescent tag and a slick-looking hook.

Materials: Thread Florescent Green UTC 70, or yellow, red, a bright color And black, in UTC 70 Hook TMC 3761 or Daichi 1560, size 12 or 14 Wire Gold, small size Hackle Hungarian partridge skin or feathers, taken from the neck portion of a skin Flash Pearl Flashabout Body Peacock herls, several strands (3-4 per fly)

All materials will be supplied, but be sure and bring your own thread… Paul recommends: Florescent Green UTC 70, or yellow, red, a bright color And black, in UTC 70 Or substitute Uni-Thread 6/0 or 8/0

IFFF Southwest Council Fly Fishing Faire

Rich Chubon This year’s 6th annual Faire was held on October 16-18th at the Fairgrounds in Bishop, Ca. More than 500 people attended the 3 day event. The set up at the fairgrounds was great allowing for workshops, exhibitors and seminars to be held in one central location. The Faire is supported by the 25 fly fishing clubs, which make up the Southwest Council. The variety of workshops and seminars provided a range of learning opportunities for beginning to advanced fly fishers. Our Club taught a Beginning Fly Fishing class, which consisted of 3 hours of hands on classroom instruction and 3 hours of fishing on Bishop Creek. My thanks to Art Champ and Lew Leichter, for their help with the classroom and on stream instruction. The feed back from the class participants was very positive. Some participants even caught a few fish.

As a bonus we got to enjoy some fall colors and a little fishing on our own. This continues to be a great event that has gotten better each year. I encourage members to put it on your calendars for next year.

October  26,  2015   On  behalf  of  the  Estuary  Program,  I  wanted  to  thank  you,  SLFF  and  the  board  for  the  generous  donation  of  funds  to  support  our  monitoring  program.  As  we  mentioned  before,  we  are  in  the  process  of  researching  flow  monitoring  equipment  that  performs  well  at  low  flow  levels.  We  expect  to  make  the  purchase  by  the  end  of  the  year  and  will  notify  you  when  the  purchase  has  been  completed.   Thought  you’d  all  like  to  know  that  Jim  Crescenzi  is  doing  well.  They’re  pretty  well  settled  now.  He  says  he’s  done  a  fair  amount  of  paddling  but  unfortunately  hasn’t  been  able  to  get  in  much  fishing  yet.   Thanks,  Lew,  and  let  me  know  if  you  have  any  questions.   -‐Ann.   Ann  Kitajima  Monitoring  Program  Manager Subject:  SLFF  funds  Date:  Tue,  23  Jun  2015   Lew:     First  of  all,  thank  you  again  for  SLFF’s  generous  support  of  our  monitoring  program.   The  $1,000  from  SLFF  was  intended  to  be  spent  on  monitoring  equipment  upgrades.  I’d  been  talking  to  Jim  Crescenzi  about  how  all  of  the  equipment  manufacturers  upgrade  their  equipment  (even  though  it’s  perfectly  good)  to  force  us  all  to  purchase  new  equipment.  So  we’d  agreed  that  the  funding  would  be  used  to  purchase  equipment  as  our  current  equipment  becomes  obsolete.   As  for  what  monitoring  equipment  we  would  purchase,  we  would  like  to  consider  first  a  flow  meter.  The  meters  we  have  right  now  don’t  work  that  well  at  very  low  flow  conditions,  which  is  what  we  experience  in  the  summer  of  drought  years.  We’re  hoping  that  new  technology  might  better  handle  these  low  flow  conditions.  A  new  unit  would  likely  cost  around  $4,000  (based  on  our  current  equipment  cost).  Another  possibilities  is  a  new  meter  for  measuring  nitrates  and  orthophosphates.  We’re  considering  a  new  method  that  is  more  accurate  at  the  low  range.  The  cost  for  that  unit  is  approximately  $1,300.  Unfortunately  we  haven’t  pinned  down  exactly  what  we’d  like  to  buy,  but  I  wanted  to  let  you  know  what  we  were  considering.   As  far  as  timing,  we’d  aim  for  the  fall  since  we’d  like  to  take  some  time  this  summer  to  consider  the  different  equipment  options.   Please  let  us  know  if  the  SLFF  would  be  supportive  of  this  use  of  the  funds.     Ann  Kitajima  Monitoring  Program  Manager
