Jim Crescenzi’s Goodbye Events have unfolded in an unexpected manner for the Crescenzi family, and I have missed the opportunity to say “Goodbye” to my many friends in Santa Lucia Fly Fishers. Unfortunately, I have missed several club meetings and my treasured fly tying sessions. I didn’t want to leave the area without expressing my deep appreciation to the many members of Santa Lucia Fly Fishers for their friendship and shared fishing and fly tying experiences. I have never been a member of a group with such a tradition of casual, sincere friendship and just old-fashioned fun! I consider many of the club members to be close personal friends, and I will miss you all a great deal. Old age has a way of creeping up on you, and for us it seemed time to relocate closer to family, so we are moving to a nice retirement community in North Carolina. Our address will be: Jim and Elaine Crescenzi 3000 Galloway Ridge, Apt. K209 Pittsboro, NC 27312 Please consider this an invitation to visit if you are in North Carolina! I don’t have a new telephone yet (land line), but my cell (805) 458-3331 will work. I intend to quickly learn of the best spots to fish in the local reservoirs and rivers, and would love to go fishing with you. Our move-in calendar has accelerated relative to our original planning, and I will miss the next meeting and the much appreciated planned going-away lunch. Please accept my apologies for being so rude as to leave before the thoughtful event! Hopefully, you will now go fishing instead! Jim

Stillwater Guide Service - Chris Wharton

Chris Wharton is a professional guide and owner of Stillwater Guide Service. He has been fishing the still waters of lakes and reservoirs such as Davis, Frenchman’s, Pyramid and many other outlying lakes since 1984. These waters harbor many large trout in the 2 to 7 lbs. range due to the excellent food chains of these nutrient-rich waters.

Chris with a 21 inch Frenchman’s Rainbow Chris will speak about the complete fly fishing experience that will give you the knowledge and techniques needed to hook more and larger trout throughout your years of fishing. You will learn to read the waters as well as the ins-and-outs of where the fish hold (seeking food, cover, and oxygen). Davis and Frenchman’s Lakes are only one hour northwest of Reno, NV. Other locations covering the Reno/Tahoe and North East California regions include: Martis Creek Reservoir, Jackson Meadows, Milton, Bridgeport Reservoir, Kirman Lake and Eagle Lake. The Balanced Leech

The next fly tying session will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on Thursday, June 4th at 6:30 when Terry Croxton will demonstrate the Balanced Leech. Terry states that the Balanced Leech is a favorite attractor-streamer-fly that was made popular in British Columbia by Jerry McBride and Philip Rowley. The fly is currently being used at Pyramid Lake. The California Fly Fisher magazine showed many variations to this fly in an article, entitled Balanced Leech, in the April 2015 issue. The unique balancing act of the Balanced Leech is what sets it apart from the traditional bead head streamers and by the way it moves in the water column.

Club Outing to Manzanita Lake by Bernard Pieters JUNE 16th - 20th This outing has become a tradition in our club, and some of the info is well know to many of us. This majestic place with its alpine natural beauty, and quality fishing is bringing us fishermen and women back year after year. In spite of the overall good fishing, the lake can also be challenging. Most of us will agree, "There is a definite learning curve to fishing this lake successfully". Keep in mind, the trout in this lake are "catch and release", wild and highly educated (at times). Many of us have encountered situations when we individually tried to figure out what was going on with this trout, was it the weather or simple trial and error? When you do figure it out, it can PAY OFF BIG TIME! In general the fishing is slow between 4 and 7:30, this will give you ample time to have dinner, and be ready for the evening fishing. If the fishing gods were not on your side during the day, you have still a good shot at great fishing in the evening. The lake comes back to life when the sun is off the water, around 7:30pm. The dry fly activity starts at that time and stays until dark, during this low light period (8:45 to 9:30) the fish are much less picky and easier to fool. What was (for some) impossible to achieve during the day is now working out great. This can result in multiple hook ups (landing is something else). At the same time (8 to 9:30) stripping a dark m. size Seal or W-Bugger on a float line at 2 - 4 ft. depth can be very productive, browns love this, and react to it with explosive strikes. This is a great way to end content with your fishing day. There is a daily fishing briefing (report) planned around 5 pm in site #C-1. A get together can be arranged for one of the early evenings. Lake Almanor is reasonably close by; it would be a great idea to combine Manzanita with the Almanor outing on June 21th – 27th. DETAILS WHERE: Manzanita Lake - Lassen Nat’l Park (North entrance. Annual SLFF Garage Sale/Swap Meet July 11th 9:00 am

This year the SLFF Annual "Garage Sale" will again be at David Holmes' house (63 Benton Way – SLO, 805-550-9323) on July 11, beginning at 9:00 AM and ending at noon. On offer will be a selection of gently used and still serviceable fly fishing gear and related items, all at far lower prices than you might pay at retail. Often, even those members selling gear find items for sale by other members, which they can't live without!

Buyers should bring small bills, if at all possible, or checkbooks - credit cards will not be used. Sellers should:

    • Identify their gear clearly with a tag or label showing the name of the seller and the asking price.

    • If you have more than a few things, it will be helpful to bring a card table or similar item to use to display them.

    • Bring change and/or be prepared to accept checks. • Sellers should remain present as long as they have items for sale.

Call David Holmes if you have any questions.

SATURDAY JULY 18th July and August are the major months of the year when we see big schools of bait fish coming in and out of the bay followed by bigger fish as part of the food chain. We fly fisher’s focus more on halibut, which come close to the shore during this period. Just a few members of the club have experience in fishing on a regular basis (summer) for halibut. Considering the fishing location, almost in our backyard, it is surprising we don’t see more members tap into this great fishing opportunity. For the novice and less experienced to halibut fishing "halibut is not a numbers game" it is more like a cat and mouse game. It is all or nothing. Be patient, stay concentrated and be persistent! Fish as many days as you can to build up your confidence in what you are doing. The reward can be great, and very satisfying! Besides halibut, the smelt (like a trout) is also present in the bay, and can be productive to fish. However, it is hard to be successful for halibut if you want to catch smelt at the same time. It has proved to me you reduce your chance of a halibut strike by 50 to 75 % if you start to fish more focused on smelt! We fish in Port San Luis, it is protected from the big swells and waves that we often see at other beaches. The fishing can be done from shore for a few hours with this 4.3 ft. tide. It is advisable to bring your pontoon boat or ...... with you to fish the bay more productively! There are two pre-scheduled halibut outings this summer, July 18th and the club BBQ on August 15th, Both of which will offer a good opportunity to fish for halibut. In between these two dates, if the fishing is good and stable, I will let you know with an e-mail blast. When: Saturday July 18th Location: Port San Luis Where to meet: Parking lot north of the pier Tides low: 6:30 am - 0.2 ft. Tides High: 1:09 pm + 4.3 ft. Gear up time: 7:30 am - 8 am Best fishing time: 9 am - 1:30 pm Rods: 6 to 8 wt. Lines: floating or intermediate line (no full sink lines)! Leaders: 9 to 10 ft. tapered (3 - 4 ft. 8 to 10 lbs. tippet included) Flies: Clousers size 4 - 6, 2 ½ to 3 " long, white and chartreuse (for halibut) Flies: Clousers size 6 - 8, 1 to 1 ½ '' long, white and chartreuse (for smelt) Waders / jacket /safety belt / sunglasses / sun block / Booties or sandals Don't wear fresh water wading boots, the salt will ruin them!
