  • Our VoicesAnother picture borrowedfrom twitter. Indeed it ismore than a picture: thewords resonated in mymind, probably because Ihad had a hard day andwas feeling sorry formyself. Those are themoments when I feel likethrowing in the towel andgoing back to a cossetedintellectual life. I am no longer naive but still a dreamer. I dream ofpeople who are honourable, generous and sincere whilst I seem to besurrounded by pompous, narrow-minded and self-serving creatures.Remember that All that is necessary for the forces of evil to win in theworld is for enough good men to do nothing. Let our voices be heard.

Dosubscribe to receive monthly updates.I am so proud that the President, Rossano Ercolini, a primary schoolteacher by profession and Zero Waste leader by passion, lives inTuscany, my home. Rossano has more than 20 years experience in thefield of waste and is the alma mater of the Zero Waste movement inItaly. Thanks to his commitment, his hometown Capannori was the firstEuropean city to declare the goal of Zero Waste for 2020. He hashelped the Zero Waste movement grow beyond Italian borders in whatis now the Zero Waste Europe movement. • Racism is defined in the Oxford dictionary asPrejudice, discrimination, or antagonismdirected against someone of a different racebased on the belief that ones own race issuperior.Teaching other peoples cultures has done littleto tackle the fundamental issue of racism which,

in my opinion, stems from the intolerance towards those who holddifferent opinions from ourselves and have different life styles. Racismand bigotry go hand in hand and are directed against those withnegroid features, asylum seekers, Gypsies, Roma Communities,Eastern Europeans and now, more than ever, Muslims and Jews. The listis endless because you could add Scots if one is English et cetera. Too many people in positions of power are denying racism still exists. The media whips up hysteria and plays with the raw emotions of thepublic. Lynching, albeit emotional, is back. What is the way forward? Talk shops are in abundance and prettyuseless because they are not followed by tangible results. There is asmall group, not politically correct and down to earth, that is hatching. We could make a small difference. More soon.A Thing of Beauty or a curse?Spring is coming and flocks of parakeets areback. The birds have already caused muchdamage to St John's the Evangelist Church andthe iconic Windmill in Shirley. They are quitepretty, but they are pesky too. It seems that awildlife watchdog has ruled that people will beable to shoot parakeets under a general licence. This doesn't mean that anyone can go and justshoot or strangle a parakeet. The watchdog saysthey can threaten smaller birds, crops and publicsafety. They look quite at ease eating out of birdfeeders.

NEW RACISMBecause explicit and blatant racism is illegal andthus socially censored, it is now more difficult tofind. Even Ukippers, when caught by media, haveto apologise.

    New racism involves three components:

1 Denial - there is no racism anymore2 Antagonism to demands - Why should thegovernment apologise?

3 Resentment about special measures - Whyshould there be affirmative action?

Racism is not an opinion!Racism is an offence!!

  • Say NO to Arctic ApplesWhen I read the passagebelow I had to take a deepbreath because I could notbelieve that people could betaken in by such nonsense. An apple designed fortodays busy lifestyle! Arcticapples arent slow browning. They arent low browning. They are truly non browning.By applying modern sciencetools to the age-old art of

apple breeding, Okanagan Specialty Fruits is breeding nonbrowningArctic apple varieties with all the great features you love about apples, without the browning yuck factor you dont.

What is it all about? On Friday, 13 February 2015, the U.S. Departmentof Agriculture (USDA) approved the first genetically engineered apple, despite hundreds of thousands of petitions asking the USDA to rejectit. The USDA said the GMO apple doesnt pose any harm to otherplants or pests. What about to the people who will eat them?

The Arctic Apple (Golden Delicious and Granny varieties), developed byCanada-based Okanagan Specialty Fruit, shockingly doesnt requireapproval by the U.S. Food & Drug Association (FDA). The FDA willmerely conduct a voluntary review before, presumably, rubber-stamping the apple for use in restaurants, institutions (includingschools and hospitals) and grocery stores.

The biotech industry has always claimed that genetically engineeredDNA or RNA is destroyed by human digestion, eliminating the dangerof these mutant organisms damaging human genes or human health. But many biotech scientists say otherwise. They point to evidence thatthe dsRNA present in food survive digestion in the stomach andintestines and actually enter the bloodstream and tissues of the body, where it can influence the functioning of the eater's cells.

Parents should be especially concerned, as GMOapples will most likely be sold to restaurants andschools. There will be no way to know if a child isconsuming them except avoiding anythingcontaining apples. If the Arctic Apple varietiesshow up in supermarkets, the only way to avoidthem will be to buy certified organic. Or, if they

dare label them, to avoid buying them altogether.

What is the benefit of this apple to consumers? NONE.

Well, GMO crops are often altered to resist disease or pests, but thisapple is being altered for aesthetics. Andrew Kimbrell, executivedirector of the Center for Food Safety called it a botox apple. If youcut an apple and leave it sit on your counter for a while, it will beginto brown within a matter of minutes. It is still highly edible for quitesome time, but the oxidation process eventually does what it isdesigned to do to uneaten food, decompose. The decomposition willnot stop with this technology; you just wont be able to see it. It is justa bad apple. McDonalds and co would benefit by being able to sellapples that are actually much older than they appear. Is that goodfor us? No, it is good for their pockets.

e Echo ExperienceA hairdresser who opens on Sundays isa welcome novelty. A hairdresser whogoes the extra mile when you are unableto make an appointment days inadvance is a life saver for busy women(and men).

Echo Hair is a large, elegant anduncluttered shop located at 136 HighStreet, West Wickham BR4 0LZ,telephone 020 8776 0065.

Echo is a sound caused by the reflectionof sound waves from a surface back tothe listener. Selma, the lady on the left

of the picture, chose the name of the shop because she believes thatword of mouth is a very important factor in her business. Her clientsare her best publicity. Her young son, however, had a say in the choiceof the name too as he, the first time he entered the shop when it wasbeing fitted, kept saying that there was an echo in the place.

Echo Hair is a unisex hairdresser that also caters for children. It is runby Selma, who has skill and talent and a driving energy that makesher an excellent hairdresser. Her passion leads to enthusiasm, which isthe basis for any artistic and creative work.

Selma is able to see what she wants to produce in a mass of unshapedmaterial and understands not only the basics but also the magic ofmixing colors, combining color profiles, using light and shadow as wellas interactions of warm and cold colors next to each other.

She is a great listener and seems to grasp what her clients say and alsounderstand what they are not saying.

Selma will now be joined by Fatma, a make-up artist for Christian Diorfor 17 years and Selmas life-long friend.

Fatma would like to educate ladies about the use of make up andencourages them to bring their make-up bags to the salon. She knows

ExperimentsThe more I read about all thechemical poisons in theproducts we buy, the fewer Ibuy. We all know that rawhoney and coconut oil are twoof the most powerful andpopular healing foods aroundand have been used forcenturies to treat common

ailments, as well to support the health and beauty of ones hair and skin.I read an interesting article in The Alternative Daily email alerts anddecided to try 5 ways to combine these two superfoods, adding themto my health and personal care routine:1 Conditioning hair mask to replenish moisture and increase shine.

Ingredients:1 tbsp unrefined coconut oil and 1 tbsp. raw honeyInstructions:Simply mix the oil and honey together in a small bowl, and thenapply to wet or dry hair, focusing on the most damaged, dry areas.Leave it in for up to an hour and then wash and condition your hairusing your normal routine. My way: Use your hands to melt the coconut oil over the basin andask somebody to pour the honey into it, gently. Apply to wet hairand leave it for an hour, keeping your head covered with a towel. Idid not use a conditioner. My hair had more body and was shiny. However, the process was time consuming.

2 CocoHoney cough syrupTry this syrup to treat a cold, cough, or sore throat. The lemon juicein the serum boosts your immune system, while both honey andcoconut oil contain powerful anti-viral and antimicrobial propertieswhich together help to relieve and heal your respiratory system.Ingredients:3 tbsp lemon juice60 ml raw honey 2 tbsp unrefined coconut oil

  • Instructions:Combine the ingredients in a small sauce pan and heat over low untilcoconut oil is melted and ingredients can be easily combined. Donot heat for too long or let the ingredients get too hot, as they couldlose their effectiveness. When its ready, take the syrup by thespoonful or mix into warm water or tea.My way: Make sure the lemons are organic and add the juice to themelted coconut oil. Stir it for a couple of minutes and enjoy neat. Itworked for me.

3 Super-nutritious berry smoothieThis healthy smoothie contains vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, andhealthy fats to keep you feeling energetic and full throughout theday.Ingredients:12 avocado 1 cup pure coconut water 1 tsp raw honey 1 cup frozen mixed berries 1 tbsp unrefined coconut oilInstructions:Blend all of the ingredients except the mixed berries until smooth. Then, add the cup of berries to the blender and continue to blenduntil smooth. It is important to wait to add the berries, or theircoolness can lead to the coconut oil clumpingnot ideal for asmoothie! My way: Substitute the coconut water with mineral water if youhave no fresh coconut. You can use organic blueberries only and theberries do not have to be frozen. It must be eaten as soon as possibleas the coconut oil will clump!

4 A nourishing face maskHoney can effectively treat conditions like acne, rosacea, andeczema, while coconut oil is great for relieving dry or irritated skin,as well as for reducing wrinkles. Combining them leads to super soft, clear, hydrated skin!Ingredients:1 tbsp coconut oil

    24 24

  • 2525

1 tbsp raw honeyInstructions:Mix coconut oil and honey in a small bowl with a spoon until it is wellcombined. Apply the mixture to your face and neck with yourfingertips, gently, as sometimes honey can crystalize and be rough onyour skin. Let it sink in for up to 20 minutes, and then rinse it off withlukewarm water. Simple, easy and effective! My way: I used my hands to melt the coconut oil over the basin andasked somebody to pour the honey into it, gently. My skin felt greatand I confess I licked my fingers when catching drips from theconcoction.

5 Homemade honey cinnamon CocoButterThis coconut butter is simple to make and super healthy too. Enjoyit with gluten-free breads or baked goods, as a topping on sweetpotatoes or squash, in a bowl of oatmeal or granola, or mixed intoa bit of Greek yogurt.Ingredients:1 cup unrefined coconut oil 14 cup raw honey 2 tsp ground cinnamon 12 tsp unrefined sea salt or Hymalayan saltInstructions:Place all ingredients in a food processor and process for one minuteon high. Be sure not to over-whip it, as the coconut oil may liquifyand separate from the honey. After 1 minute, transfer the spread toa jar for storage, and keep in the fridge. My way: I did try it once but I am not fond of spreads and definitelydo not like coconut butter in Greek yogurt.

For the best results on all of these recipes, makesure your raw honey is certified organic (or ismade by local artisans who follow organicpractices), and that you use organic, extra-virgincoconut oil.I have started asking Tesco to have an organicand no GMO section in the supermarket. Pleasehelp me. We are worth it. Marzia

    CROYDONBOROUGH STOP ANDSEARCH

    C0MMUNITYMONITORING

GROUPCMGs are local scrutiny bodies that will instigate changes. The decrease in numbers of stop and searches is not sufficient tochange the perceptions of the public who believe that police employsincorrect tactics that have a negative impact on people.Croydon CMG asked for better training and awareness of policeofficers: we work so that MPS guidelines are fully implemented. The quality of the encounter with the person being stopped is essentialto maintaining public support: a person should be dealt withprofessionally, politely and positively. Change will then ensue.

If you wish to share your experience, positive or negative, around Stop and Search or talk about a grievance,

please email Marzia Nicodemi, Chair of Croydon CMG, at

    [email protected] or phone/text on 07940 415532.

Quality of Encounter Model: Explain, Ensure, Record, ReassureExplain: An appropriate introduction and explanation of what is

going to happen during the encounter.Ensure: Agreement and understanding and, therefore,

cooperation.Record: Acknowledgement of the encounter (hand over copy of

    HARASSMENT

The road is finally clear but I want to put on record that we had toendure temporary traffic lights in Palace View, probably becausenobody, not even Essex Utilities or Police, took heed of the no entrysigns. The traffic lights were obviously defective because they did not

  • change for prolonged periods of time and I was told, twice, they werenot working at all. Moreover, they were on all night which is ridiculousin a secondary road without traffic.I call this harassment and a waste of money. We suffered months ofinconvenience and we will end up paying for the chaotic managementof the gas works. The daily working hours could have been extended so the works couldfinish sooner. Instead nobody appeared to work on a few days andwork proceeded at slow motion. Finally, to add insult to injury, we were left with a sign that makes nosense whatsoever because there are no diversions anywhere near. Wasit left behind by chance? Do they ever take an inventory of their signs? The picture below was taken on 25 February 2015. The sign is still thereon 4 March 2015. How much longer we will have to look at it?
