Component typesFansFan types available with the McQuay Skyline outdoorair handling units are housed double width, double inlet(DWDI) forward curved and airfoil fans, plenum fans, inline fans, and twin fans. Forward curved fansgenerally provide the lowest first cost option and areused for lower static pressure applications. McQuayhoused forward curved fans will typically operate up to6.0" of static pressure. Airfoil fans have a higher firstcost, but are more efficient, quieter and can handlehigher static pressures. McQuay housed airfoil fans willoperate up to 9.0" of static pressure.

Plenum fans save space by eliminating turns inductwork. They also provide a high degree of flexibilitywhen locating the outlet ductwork. Plenum fans arealso very good for blow through applications as theygenerate a uniform outlet velocity profile. Both beltdrive and direct drive plenum fans are available.

Inline fans are quieter and more efficient than moststandard fans. Inline fans are most beneficial in VAVapplications.

Twin fans (two housed forward curved fans mountedon one common shaft) are excellent for applicationsthat require low profile units.

Plenum fan

The different types of fans are available in numerouswheel diameters per unit size. The fan size selection isalways optimized and identified by the SelectTOOLSSoftware. The program offers a number of fan sizes toselect from and considers performance, efficiency, sound generation and first cost. Fan and motorassemblies can be provided with 2" spring, rubber inshear, or rigid mount allowing the customer the optionof isolating the fan and motor assembly internally orisolating the entire unit. All fans are dynamicallybalanced at the plant as an assembly, including themotors and drives.

All fans rotate on a solid steel shaft of uniform diameterthat has been ground, polished, and coated with a rustinhibitor. Fan shafts are selected to have a maximumoperating speed well below the first critical speed.

Belt guards are available on plenum fans and inlinefans. Seismic restraint is also available for applicationsrequiring additional fan support.

The fan bearings provided will have a minimum L50 lifeof 200,000 hours, and are available as high as1,000,000 hours. Bearings are selected for minimumnoise levels and minimal service. Bearings are selfal igning and pre-lubricated for immediate use.Bearings are mounted on rigid frames and positionedto provide proper balance. All bearings include copperlubrication lines that are extended to the access side ofthe fan cabinet with the grease fittings located near theaccess door opening.

All fan motors are internally mounted. The appropriatemotor size will be selected by the SelectTOOLSSoftware. Motors cannot be undersized, but they maybe oversized if desired. Motor options include open dripproof, totally enclosed fan cooled, 1 speed/1 winding, 2speed/1 winding, and 2 speed/2 winding. Motorefficiencies available include standard efficiency, highefficiency, and premium efficiency, depending on themotor type.

CoilsThe McQuay Skyline outdoor air handler offers broadapplication flexibility in coil sections and coils. Coils canbe arranged in draw through or b low throughconfigurations. Heating only, cooling only, or coolingand heating sections are available. All coils areinstalled with space between each coil to allow accessfor cleaning and mounting of controls.

Cooling coil sections, and cooling and heating coilsections, are available in seven different sectionleng ths to accommodate every app l i ca t i onrequirement. Drain pans extend the full length of thesection. Removable access panels or doors may beprovided in the deeper sections that will not interferewith piping connections extending through the unit sidepanels or piping vestibules.

All cooling coils are mounted over a double slopeddrain pan. The cooling coil rests on coil supportslocated over the drain pan. The drain pan extendsbeyond the leaving side of the coil to help recovercondensate. The primary drain pan also extends underthe coil headers and return bends to help removecondensate from the unit. A full thickness of insulationis always provided between the drain pan and thebottom outer panel. The drain pan is sloped in twoplanes to promote proper condensate removal. Thegalvanized drain pan is coated with an antimicrobialtreatment as standard to help inhibit the growth ofalgae and fungi. A stainless steel drain pan is alsoavailable as an option.

Coil connections always extend through the unitcabinetry, allowing for the easy connection of valvesand piping. All valves and piping can be enclosedwithin a piping vestibule that is available in varyingdepths to meet piping requirements. Water coil ventsand drains are located outside the cabinetry.

A range of different size face area coils is available, including small, medium, large and staggered.Generally small face area coils are used for heatingapplications with bypass and medium and large facearea coils are used for cooling applications withbypass.

McQuay Skyline outdoor air handler coils can beselected from a full range of coil options. With McQuaybeing a major manufacturer of heat transfer coils, thecoil options are virtually unlimited. The McQuaycontractor coil line has several coil types, ranging fromhot and cold water, evaporator and steam. StandardMcQuay coils are ARI certified. In addition to a broadrange of circuitings, fin spacing and row depths, coilscan be constructed of different material types for fins, tubes, connections, and casings. This provides theability to specify a coil to meet application needs.

FiltersMaintaining good indoor air quality is of utmostimportance and a key ingredient is air filtration. Toprovide a wide range of filtration options, McQuay hasenlisted the help of AAF International, a worldwidesupplier of complete air filtration products. Theirexpertise has helped provide excellent filtrationcomponents for McQuay equipment.

McQuay Skyline outdoor air handlers have beendesigned to house flat, angular, bag, or cartridge filters. These media types range in efficiencies up to 95% andMERV 15. (See page 12 for a description of the MERVRating.) In addi t ion to offer ing a fu l l range ofefficiencies, the filter media can be provided with anoptional antimicrobial treatment. Antimicrobialtreatments are highly recommended for a completefiltration system.

An optional filter pressure gauge may be ordered witheach filter section to help promote regular servicingand prevent clogging.

Both bag and cartridge filters have a pre-filter and canbe either side load or front load. An access door isprovided on either or both sides of the unit to accessthe filter section. Filters can be positioned any place inthe unit, and as many filter sections as required can beused. Many health and food industries require stringentfiltration and often there is a need for a filter section tobe the last component in the air stream. The McQuaySkyline outdoor air handler meets these needs byproviding a filter section located as the last componentin the air stream, and with full sheet metal liners.

*What is the MERV Rating?Minimum Eff ic iency Report ing Value (MERV) -ASHRAE Standard 52.2-1999 entitled "Method ofTesting General Ventilation Air-Cleaning Devices forRemoval by Particle Size" provides a methodology fordetermining filter efficiency at removing various sizes ofparticles as the filters become loaded. There are threeranges of particle sizes that define the MERValue:

Range 1 — 0.3 - 1.0 µm particle size.

Range 2 — 1.0 - 3.0 µm particle size.

Range 3 — 3.0 - 10.0 µm particle size.

The Table below shows a comparison of the MERVrating to the average arrestance percentage by theolder ASHRAE Std. 52.1 method:

AccessThe access section can be selected to meet specificapplication criteria. Access sections are available to beplaced anywhere in a unit in a variety of depths.Sections are available in depths of 16", 24", 30", 36",42", 48", and 54". Typically access sections are usedfor field-installed components, air monitoring devices,or to provide ample space between components.

Mixing boxes and economizersWhen outside and return air mixing is required, eithera mixing box or an economizer section can beselected. Either component will regulate the amountof outside and return air supplied to the conditionedspace. The mixing box or economizer can make useof free cooling by opening outside air dampers whenthe ambient air will help to condition the supply airstream. Additionally, dampers may be individuallysized to provide better mixing.

Both the mixing box and economizer are provided withthe McQuay UltraSeal™ low leak damper. This damperhas one of the lowest leakage rates in the industry, maximizing energy efficiency. At 4.0" static pressure anda face velocity of 1100 fpm through the dampers, theleakage rate is less than 0.2% (it is common to specifyleakage rates at higher static pressures, but dampersshould not exceed 2" of static pressure). The parallelairfoil blades are hollow core and fully gasketed.Continuous vinyl seals are provided between thedamper blades. Stainless steel end seals and linkagebuilt into high strength ABS plastic endcaps providesmooth, quiet operation. Mixing boxes or economizersused on McQuay Skyline outdoor air handlers caninclude optional factory-installed rain hoods.

Internal face and bypass dampers

Blenders/Air MixersStratification occurs from the mixing box when theairflow of two different temperature air streams do notmix completely. This incomplete mixing can continuethrough the air handler, and subject an unprotected coil(no glycol) to damaging freezing temperatures. With theincreased minimum outdoor air requirements identifiedby ASHRAE Standard 62, the l ikel ihood for airstratification increases. An air handler must be able tohandle the required amount of outdoor air, regardless oftemperature, without risking damage to the coil.

Blenders/air mixers help to provide protection for coilsagainst freeze-up due to stratification. Blenders/airmixers add additional turbulence to the passing airstreams, boosting the air velocity for improved mixing.Proper distance is provided immediately downstreamto give the air streams enough time to fully mix beforereaching the next air handler component. Becauseblenders/air mixers are static devices, they require nomaintenance. Different blender/air mixer lengths canbe selected to satisfy either the acoustic, space, pressure drop, or initial cost requirements. TheSelectTOOLS Software can help select the appropriateblender/air mixer for the application.

AttenuatorsBui lding occupants have become increasinglyconscious of the quality of their environments, and lowsound levels are a key criteria. Studies have confirmedimproved productivity when workers are performing insound-controlled environments. Consequently, buildingowners, engineers, and architects have become awareof the economic benefits associated with quietenvironments.

McQuay Skyline outdoor air handlers have beendesigned to provide the quietest sound levels possible.Factory-installed attenuators are available for thedischarge or return sections of the air handling unit tomeet the mos t s t r ingen t sound a t tenua t ionrequirements. Different attenuator lengths can beselected to satisfy either the acoustic, space, pressuredrop, or initial cost requirements. Air handler selectionSelection of flexible Skyline outdoor air handlersdepends on many different criteria. To simplify thisprocess, McQuay has designed an innovat ivecomputerized select ion program - the Skyl ineSeIectTOOLS Software. It allows the user to developan air handler from the ground up, and obtain all of thedetail required for proper design and specification. Theuser can have a unit designed in a matter of minutes.

The program is completely integrated. All input data iscarried through the selection process and consideredas calculations are made. Because the program isintegrated, the opportunity for errors is reduced. Thesoftware guides the user through the selection process.On-line editing helps select only viable options. Theprogram is provided so that even the less experienceduser can select air handlers accurately.

The design of an efficient air handler system isdependent on accurate system design and properequipment selection. Factors which affect the unitselection include applicable codes, venti lat ionrequirements, heating and cooling space loads, acceptable temperature differentials, thermal mediaand installation limitations. The selection of the unit canbe broken down into four steps; unit type and size, coils, accessories, and fan and motor requirements.

The unit is generally selected based on the air volumerequired and the desired face velocity through thecooling coil. For cooling coils, 400-600 feet per minuteis considered the optimum face velocity range fordehumidification and the prevention of any moisturecarryover. The Skyline SeIectTOOLS Software willselect the unit size based on air flow and face velocityrequirements. Once the unit size is determined, thecoils and all accessory components are selected. Onceall components and coils are selected (identifying thetotal internal component pressure drop), the fan can beselected.

Selection of coilsThe Skyline air handler provides the ability to selectfrom multiple face area coils per unit size. Once the coilsize is selected, the row and fin requirements can bedetermined based on performance criteria. McQuayoffers an extensive line of coil types and circuitings. This wide variety of circuiting, row, and fin spacing, inaddition to different material types, can provide a coilselection that will handle the load required.Heating, cooling, and combination cooling and reheatsections are available. Coil sections come in manydifferent depths to accommodate multiple rows of coils, and to provide access on the leaving air side orbetween coils for cleaning and inspection of the drain

pan. Access in the coil section can be minimized ormaximized depending on the space available and jobneeds. Coil sections can be placed as needed in theunit, and as many sections as required for conditioningof air can be provided.

Selection of accessoriesThe Skyline outdoor air handler offers a completeselection of component and section types, in a varietyof unit arrangements and configurations. Thesecomponent options are available to provide propermixing, filtration, and temperature control of the air tomeet specific application requirements. The outsideand/or return air can be brought into the unit through aplenum, mixing box, or economizer. For mixing of thetwo air streams, dampers are required to modulate anddirect outside and return air. This can be accomplishedthrough the use of a mixing box or economizer. Bothsection types use the McQuay patented UltraSeal lowleak dampers. Blenders/air mixers are also available toprovide proper mixing of two air streams, to preventstratification and avoid damage to equipment due tofreezing temperatures.

To promote good air filtration, many different filtermedia types and arrangements are offered. Filters canbe provided in angular or flat filter racks, a variety ofmedia efficiencies, and with or without a prefilter. Thefilter section can be located anywhere in the unit tof i l ter air as it enters the unit, or in a f inal f i l terarrangement before it leaves the unit. Bag or cartridgefilters can be either front or side loading.

Also available are many different size access sections, for field-installed components or to provide accessbetween components. Other options include diffusers,p lenums, face and bypass dampers , soundattenuators, and blenders/air mixers.

Standard access doors open outward for maximumaccessibility to internal components.

Fan selectionFan selection requires an accurate calculation of theresistance to the airflow through the entire system. Thistotal resistance consists of the sum of two parts - theexternal and internal static pressure. The externalstatic pressure is the static pressure found in thedistribution system, external to the air handler. Theinternal unit resistance is the sum of the resistance ofthe coils and various other unit components andaccessories. Component pressure drops are listed forspecific air flows in this Catalog.

Use the Skyline SeIectTOOLS Software to determineinternal component pressure drops of the system.Once the total static pressure is known, the softwarewill identify the fans available to properly handle the airflow and static pressure for the system. The softwarewill generate a full fan curve based on the fan selectionand point of operation.

Installation flexibilityMcQuay Skyline outdoor air handlers can ship fullyassembled or in sections as required by the job sitecondition to provide maximum installation flexibility.Multiple fan, coil, filter, mixing box, face and bypass, and access components allow the design flexibility ofbuilt-up systems with the cost advantage of factoryfabricated units.

Unit locationThe structural engineer should be involved to verifythat the roof has adequate strength and ability tominimize deflection. Extreme caution should be takenwhen using a wooden roof structure. Units should alsobe located away from building flue stacks or exhaustventilators to prevent possible entry of contaminated airthrough the outside air intake. Sufficient space shouldalso be allowed around the unit for service clearance.

Locating the unit away from occupied spaces and overutility areas, corridors, and auxiliary spaces will helpreduce the transmission of sound and vibration tooccup ied spaces . A concre te deck o r pad isrecommended when the unit is located over anoccupied space where good acoustics are essential.

Curb installationThe roof curb is field assembled and must be installedlevel (within 1/16 in. per foot side to side). A sub-basehas to be constructed by the contractor in applicationsinvolving pitched roofs. Gaskets are furnished andmust be installed between the unit and curb. Forproper installation, follow NRCA guidelines. Inapplications requiring post and rail installation, an I-beam securely mounted on multiple posts shouldsupport the unit on each side.

Applications in geographic areas that are subjected toseismic or hurricane conditions must meet coderequirements for fastening the unit to the curb and thecurb to the building structure.

DuctworkA well-designed duct layout will minimize systemresistance and sound generation. Duct connections toand from units should allow straight, smooth airflow. Anyabrupt change in duct size should be avoided. Sharpturns in the fan discharge should also be prevented, particularly turns opposed to wheel rotation. If sharpbends are necessary, turning vanes should be used.See Figure 1 on page 18 for good fan outlet practices.

Piping and drain pan trapsPiping should be in accordance with accepted industrystandards. Undue stress should not be applied at theconnection to coil headers. Pipe work should besupported independently of the coils with adequatepiping flexibility for thermal expansion. Drain lines andtraps should be run full size from the drain panconnection. Drain pans should have traps to permit thecondensate from the coils to drain freely. On a draw-through unit, the trap depth and the distance betweenthe trap outlet and drain pan outlet should be twice thenegative static pressure under normal unit operation.

Coil freeze protectionWhen applying the Skyline outdoor air handler ingeographic areas that experience subfreezingconditions, coil freeze protection measures must beprovided. Subfreezing temperatures can adverselyaffect water and steam coils during controlled oruncontrolled unit shutdowns and even during unitoperation. Some temperature stratification will occur, particularly at low ambient temperatures. Whenrequired, static air mixers/blenders are available thatcan s ign i f i cant ly improve mix ing and reducestratification. This can result in improved protectionagainst freeze-up.

Glycol is strongly recommended as a positive means offreeze protection for water coils. No control sequencecan prevent coil freezing in the event of a power failureor equipment malfunction. During those periods, glycolis the only positive means of freeze protection. Whenselecting water coils, glycol should be specified toaccount for performance differences.

Vibration isolationTo help keep noise and vibration compatible with theintended use of the conditioned air space, goodacoustical and vibration engineering practices shouldbe applied during the early stages of design.

Since most applications require vibration isolation, theSkyline outdoor air handler is available with factoryinstalled internal isolation. Internally isolated unitsfeature spring or rubber in shear isolators sizedspecifically for each fan wheel and unit size.

SoundThe unit inlet, outlet, and radiated sound levels foreach octave band based on your specific application, are calculated by the Skyline SeIectTOOLS Software.Sound performance data is derived from testingperformed in accordance with the AMCA Standard 300.The effects of various components, casework, and unitconfigurations have been taken into account.

FiltersFilters should be routinely replaced to minimize filterloading. As filters get dirty, the filter pressure dropincreases, causing a decrease in airflow. Dependingon fan type, this airflow change can be significant. Theeffect of filter loading is the most critical when using65% and 95% efficient filters.

When making a fan selection, a pressure dropcomponent for filters as they get dirty should beincluded in the system total static pressure. A valuemidway between clean and dirty fi lter ratings isrecommended. If a minimum airflow is critical, theselection of the fan RPM should be based upon theminimum airflow at the total static pressure associatedwith dirty filters. The motor horsepower will then bedetermined by the selected rpm and the total staticpressure assumed for dirty filters, which will yield thela rges t b rake horsepower. Fo l low ing theserecommendations should limit airflow fluctuation as thefilters load.

Air supply systems and fan lawsAn air supply system consists of an air handler cabinet, heat exchanger, filters, ductwork, grilles and registersused to distribute air throughout the building. Thesystem is independent of the fan used to supply thesystem.

The resistance of the system, referred to as staticpressure (SP), is dependent upon the quantity of air(CFM) that is moved through it. The air quantity isdetermined by the cooling, heating and ventilatingrequirements.

For any system, the static pressure will vary directly asthe square of the air quantity. This relationship betweenCFM and SP establishes the system curve for thatsystem and may be expressed as follows:

The system curve is unique for a particular systemconfiguration. Any change to the system caused bydirty filters, damper changes, etc., will result in a newsystem curve.

For fans operating at low pressures (less than 10" W.G.),the effects of a i r compression are negl ig ib le.Disregarding air compression allows fan operation in afixed system to be expressed by simple relationships. These relationships are known as fan laws and may beused to calculate the effects of fan speed and air densitychanges on this system.

1.The flow rate varies directly with the change in fanspeed:

A 10% increase in fan speed will give a 10% increasein air quantity.

2.The static pressure varies as the square of thechange in fan speed:

A 10% increase in fan speed will give a 21% increasein static pressure.

3.The fan brake horsepower varies as the cube of thechange in fan speed:

A 10% increase in fan speed will give a 33% increasein fan horsepower.

4. System static pressure and brake horsepower aredirectly proportional to the air density:

Consequent ly, the s ta t ic pressure and brakehorsepower decrease wi th an increase in a i rtemperature or higher altitude, and increase with adecrease in air temperature or lower altitude.

To determine fan performance for temperatures andaltitudes other than standard (70°F, 0 ft. altitude), thestatic pressure must be adjusted by the density ratiobefore the fan RPM and BHP requirements can bedetermined. Densi ty ra t ios are expressed astemperature and altitude conversion factors in Table 1.

Table 1: Temperature and altitude conversion factors

Fan and motor heatMotor and drive heat - The total energy input to anyfan motor is consumed in two ways - by heat dissipatedthrough the motor frame and by work output. Theamount of heat dissipated by the motor is a function ofits operating efficiency:

Motor heat = input x (1-motor efficiency)

A small amount of the motor work output is dissipatedby the drive mechanism, which also results in a heatgain. Belt drive losses are a function of belt tension andnumber of belts as well as power transmitted. Typicalbelt drive losses range from 2% to 6% of BHP.

Whether motor and drive heat gain become part of anair handling system cooling load depends on the motorlocation relative to the conditioned space. For airhandlers with internal motors, the motor and drive arewithin the conditioned space. Therefore, the motor anddrive add heat to the system. This heat must besubtracted from the cooling capacity and added to theheating capacity of the unit.

Fan heat generation - All of the power input to a fanresults in heat gain which must be considered as acooling load. The amount of heat generated is directlyproportional to the fan BHP:

Fan heat (Btuh) = BHP x 2545

Much of this heat generation occurs within the fanitself. Fans are not 100% efficient, and the energy

losses which occur are converted directly into heat. The work done by the fan on the airstream increasesthe temperature, pressure and velocity of air. The heatof compression required to raise the airstream to thisincreased energy level is also a heat gain.

As the air travels throughout the building, its energy isdeteriorated by friction, resulting in pressure drop. Thisis also heat gain, but it does not result in temperaturerise because the air expands as the pressure isreduced. The expansion is a cooling process whichoffsets the heat generated by friction.

Typical fan and motor heat values are given inFigure 3.

Figure 3: Fan and motor heat gain

Air modulationOne method of fan modulation is to use inlet guidevanes. Fan volume reduction with inlet vanes isaccomplished by pre-spinning the air in the direction offan rotation. The effect of pre-spinning results indecreased air delivery, static pressure and brakehorsepower. For each position of inlet guide vanes, anew fan curve is created. Brake horsepower reductionscannot be read directly off the fan curve on inlet vaneapplications because a new fan curve is generated asthe inlet vane closes.

It is also difficult to estimate turn down capability oninlet vane applications. Any time a VAV system withterminal boxes is controlled by a static pressure

sensor, a system resistance curve is developed whichpasses through the design operating point and aminimum static pressure control point. This systemcurve will affect where the fan will cross into theunstable operating range. An illustration of inlet vaneturndown is presented in Figure 4.

Inlet vanes operate most efficiently when the fan ischosen at or near peak efficiency. Inlet guide vanesoffer good power savings, wide modulation range, andlow maintenance.

Figure 4: Inlet vane control reduction factors

Follow percent of design CFM up to system curve andleft for percent of design static pressure. Followpercent of design CFM up to BHP curve and left forpercent of rated horsepower.

NOTE: Fan performance with inlet vane control atother than wide open position is not within the scope ofour air handler certification program with ARI.

Cooling coil section

NOTE: The single cooling coil section is available innumerous depths. This provides the option of varyingthe amount of space downstream from the coil foraccess to inspect and clean the coil and drain pan. When using a single bank of coils, the 18" deep sectionwill hold up to a 4-row water or DX coil.

Also available are staggered cooling coils. Thestaggered arrangement maximizes the cooling coil facearea by providing 2 banks of coils. These 2 coils are

not stacked, but are staggered in the direction ofairflow. This configuration does require more sectiondepth in the direction of airflow. Staggered coils areonly available on unit sizes 025 and larger. The sectiondepth required will vary between 30" - 54". This willdepend on the unit size and number of rows in the coil.

Standard base units require a minimum cooling coilvestibule length of 12”. Curb-ready base units require aminimum cooling coil vestibule length of 18”.

*These are the dimensions of the unit only. Curb-ready base adds 6” (152 mm) to the unit height. A standard base rail adds 8” (203 mm) to the width, and between 4” - 12” (102mm - 305 mm) to the unit height.** All cooling coil lengths listed are available for any unit size (003 - 055).Height dimension does not include 2” roof cap seam.

Access doors

Note: Access doors are an option for most sections. Fan sections are always provided with a door on one side ofthe unit. The size of the access door varies with the size of the section. Access doors are never wider than 30".

Once the door is opened outward, the opening will be 2" less than the door height and width. This is because thereis a 1" flange around the opening. Door height is always 4" shorter than the section height except if the section hasa drain connection. If the section has a drain pan, then the door will be 6" shorter than the section height. Themaximum door height is 50", except filter section doors, which are equal to section height less 4".

*These are the dimensions of the unit only. Curb-ready base adds 6” (152 mm) to the unit height.A standard base rail adds 8” (203 mm) to the width, and between 4” - 12” (102mm - 305 mm) to the unit height.Height dimension does not include 2” roof cap seam.
