A is for August and if you are like many people, you may be surprised that it is August already; where did the summer go? In an effort to keep positive (at least until the middle of the month), this week I will focus on three things beginning with “A” – a triple A reflection perhaps.

A is for Accounting: Another month has ended, one during which the pastor of our sister parish in Haiti visited, and it was time to send Father Harold Francois our “tithe” (1% of regular income) for July and the contributions from his mission appeal. Our parish cluster responded very generously to his message: the second collections totaled $2,951.25 and the July envelopes for the sister parish, which many used for the collection, added up to $2,112. (Father Harold also attended the Rochester Serra Golf Day while he was here and Bishop Quinn asked him to say a few words at the end of the meal; gifts from the Serrans, included in these totals, amounted to $1,100.) The July “tithe” was $408, the SJW Men’s Club donated $100, and we sent another $350 for monthly salaries (teachers & cooks). My hope and prayer is that Father Harold can use these monies to develop a plan for building a new church/school in addition to meeting the immediate needs.

A is for Au revoir: It seems like Deacon Brian Mulligan just arrived, but he has been here for over two months already and next Sunday (August 13

th) will mark the end of his pastoral experience at

SJWHF. He will be helping with Camp Summit this Monday-Thursday, but will return to preach and assist at all the weekend Masses. It has been great to have him in our parishes this summer and I have enjoyed sharing ministry with him. Deacon Brian has a wonderful spirit, a strong desire to serve God’s people and a prayerful approach to life and ministry. (He’s also Irish and a fisherman, but nobody’s perfect, right?) After a gathering with seminarians and a short time at home, he will return to Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit for his last year of studies prior to ordination to the priesthood next June. Say “au revoir” and keep him in your prayers!

A is for Assumption: Yes, there is a holyday of obligation during August, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven. It falls on Tuesday, August 15

th, and we will have three Masses: 5:30 pm,

Monday, August 14th at SJW; 12:05 pm, Tuesday, August 15

th at SJW;

and 5:30 pm, Tuesday, August 15th, at HF. Please remember to pause

for a holyday Mass to honor Mary and ponder her final destiny; we do want to join her in heaven someday, don’t we?

I’m glad there aren’t any months that begin with “Z”!

Sincerely in Christ,

At the Transfiguration the three chosen disciples saw Jesus glorified. Jesus did not hide his glory from them for a few minutes. During this time they fell to the ground terrified. All of this reminds me of a prayer said in adoration of the Eucharist: I Devoutly Adore You. I devoutly adore you, O hidden God, truly hidden beneath these appearances. My whole heart submits to you it surrenders itself completely. Sight, touch, taste are all deceived in their judgment of you, but hearing suffices firmly to believe. I believe all that the Son of God has spoken: There is nothing truer than this word of Truth. On the Cross only the Divinity was hidden, but here the Humanity is also hidden. I believe and confess both and I ask for what the repentant thief asked. I do not see the wounds as Thomas did, but I confess that you are my God. Make me believe more and more in you, hope in you, and love you. O Memorial of our Lord's death! Living bread that gives life to man, grant my soul to live on you and always to savor your sweetness. Lord Jesus, good Pelican, wash me clean with your blood, one drop of which can free the entire world of all its sins. Jesus, whom now I see hidden, I ask you to fulfill what I so desire: that on seeing you face to face, I may be happy in seeing your glory, Amen.

Brian Mulligan
