Recognizing Change...Continued from page 1

Future Growth of Soroptimist

This year the Sierra Nevada Region is focusing on how to increase membership and overcome the generational gap. According to Director Sarah, the region’s thoughts that technology is one cause for this gap. The expectations of the Baby Boom Generation versus Gen X and Millennials are also different.

The key question, she asks: “How do we get the Gen Xers and Millennials to join Soroptimist?” Her answer, “Do what is necessary to create an atmosphere which will embrace these women.”

During her presentation she outlined several traits differing the younger generation, including working in team environments, being comfortable speaking up, having open-minds, wanting to attend meetings only if there is value for them, embracing new ideas and adapting to change.

Preparing for Change

Director Sarah had several recommendations for clubs to create an atmosphere that embraces these attributes which means changing some of the long-time thoughts and ways of doing things, especially embracing new ideas and adapting to change. She also included recognizing leadership qualities and grooming members to step up and lead, plus supporting leaders with members’ own participation and leadership.

She concluded her remarks by saying, “Change involves many considerations. Obviously what was done in the past is valuable and there is merit to tradition. But the past needs to be integrated with change in order to thrive. This includes integrating seasoned members with new members. Remember if the past is important, it is the seasoned members who hold

the key to communicating the history of the club.”

A complete transcript of Director Sarah’s remarks was attached to the Grapevine of August 11.

Director Sarah asked members to participate in an exercise to illustrate how we all think and act differently.

Great Minds Think Alike: There were a few members who opened their eyes at the end of Director Sarah’s exercise and discovered more similarities than differences. From left are President-Elect Rikki Hensley-Ricker, Director Sarah Carrasco, Penney Leezy and President Jennifer Burnitt.

Everyone picked up a piece of paper, closed their eyes and followed directions to alternately fold the paper in half and tear off various comers. When finished, with eyes open, members unfolded their paper to reveal many different shapes, some alike and some very different from other members at their table.

Where did you have lunch or dinner on Wednesday, August 17?

SITM’s Fundraising Committee hopes it was at one of these four restaurants who participated in “A Spoonful of Success” with contracts to donate a percentage of the food totals from members, family and friends who ate in these establishments on this day.

• Bistro 7 • La Posada Real • Skipollini’s • We Olive & Wine Bar •

Totals are not yet available, but a show of hands at Thursday’s regular meeting showed quite a few members participated in this fundraising effort.

Attached to the back of this newsletter is our next “A Spoonful of Success” dining out at BJ’s Restaurant at Legends in Sparks on Monday, September 26. Remember to take the flyer with you to quality for the donation to SITM.

Joining fellow Soroptimists from the Sierra Nevada Region for an evening of fun, Vivian is joined by Margaret Van LanMartin from SI/Chico and a member from SI/Sierra Foothills (Grass Valley).

The SI Punè Metro East (SIPME) Club and member Nisha Ghosh sent Soroptimist International of Truckee Meadows a special gift to thank us for the $340 happy dollars collected during March 2016 and support we have given their club.

The picture you see is of several bags made by the Needle Women from SIPME’s Bags Project. This project started several years ago as a simple brown bag with SIPME printed on it. As the project grew, SIPME member Rohini Khare stepped in and helped design the beautiful blue bag with the Soroptimist logo.

This project provides temporary employment for women and girls who learn valuable skills from member Rohini and take pride in cutting and making the bags. SIPME appreciates the fact that these gifts can be used as a reusable shopping bag— helping to do away with plastic in landfills. The Needle Women also recently made nearly 80 dresses from material

donated by members. These dresses were then given to Renutai’s school in the city, which provides needed support to the children of commercial sex workers.

Friends, family members¸ other Soroptimist Clubs and even our own members are known to ask: “How does SITM accomplish so much each year?” The short answer is hard-working members, engaged through focused and professionally managed committees that embrace and carry-out their assignments with efficiency, grace and success.

At the start of each new club year, the committees gather together to review their responsibilities with the knowledge of experienced members, the ideas of newer members, a review of past projects and performances, the assignments of tasks, the follow-up and follow-through that make for successful events and projects.

Here are just a few of many SITM service, technical and special committees that are already working on their short and long term goals and preparing another round of successful events, speakers and projects.

For future issues of SITM Update, this is an invitation to other committees already meeting, planning and scheming their projects for 2016-17 to take a photo of your group and send it to the newsletter editor, Faye I. Andersen, along with a short description of what you are planning for the year.

SITM Committees: Where the Work Gets Done By Faye I. Andersen

This committee has two coordinators, one for Finance and one for Governance, both of whom serve for two years. The committee provides financial oversight and oversees club operating regulations. Finance implements the yearly club budget process and develops internal control and accountability policies. Governance reviews proposed amendments to club bylaws and policies/procedures, plus maintains alignment with region and federation updates and changes.

Fundraising Committee Presents Proposals

Fundraising Committee Co-Coordinator Barbara Atwell presented two motions for approval of the membership. First was a request to sign-up SITM and encourage members to join with reputable venders with charitable giving programs where a percentage of purchases accrue to SITM, like we have done with Save Mart S.H.A.R.E.S. program and Smith’s Supermarkets. Motion passed.

Dolan Donor Walk September 18

The Fundraising Committee requested to join with the Membership Committee for a joint event hosting a booth at the upcoming Dolan Donor Walk on Sunday, September 18 at the Sparks Marina. Only a few members are needed to host this joint fundraising and member recruitment event, but all members are welcome to join committee members at the booth. Motion carried.

Finance/Governance Recommends Dues Revisionsand Revised Budget

Vicki Schultz, Finance/Governance Co-Coordinator made three motions on behalf of the committee to change certain member dues. The first was to revert back to the $190 for new member dues, eliminating the extra $25 fee for new members. Motion carried.

The second was to reduce new member dues for those joining in the 4th quarter of the club year to $100 to only cover SNR and SIA requirements and giving new members the option of joining in the 4th quarter or waiting until the July 1 start of the New Year. Motion carried.

Slight Budget Revision Approved

A third motion from the committee requested the establishment of a $200 budget for the Fundraising Committee, since they were not included in this year’s General Fund Budget. Motion carried.

IGU Report on Nepal Education for Girls Project

IGU Committee Co-Coordinator Monica House gave an update on recent actions by the committee. She reported on girls scholarship money designated for the Nepal project, including $7,500 for 13 girls funded through the SI President’s Grant; $4,800 for 13 girls for dormitory/scholarship funding; $3,421 remaining from disaster recovery funding, and a yet to be announced total of funds for the Micro-Lending projects.

Happy Dollar Designations to Remain Monthly

Under New Business, members engaged in a discussion of continuing to collect weekly Happy Dollars and designating them for committees and causes on a monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly basis. Eight requests to receive Happy Dollars have been received. After much discussion, a motion from the floor came to keep Happy Dollars designated on a monthly basis. Motion carried.

July Happy Dollars in the amount of $124 were collected, but remain undesignated.

IRS Filing Underway

SITM’s annual IRS filing of Form 990 is not due until November; however review of last year’s financials does take time to complete. With approval of the membership, Bev Perkins, CPA, was designated to complete our IRS requirements.

SIA Fundraising Council Positions Open for Nomination

SIA is seeking nominations for members to join the SIA Fundraising Council. Nominations are due September 15, 2016. Council members provide strategic fundraising insights, promote financial support of Soroptimist, solicit sponsorships and partnerships, and actively fundraise for SIA and the regions. Seventeen Members CanBoast Perfect AttendanceSeventeen STM members accomplished “perfect attendance” during the 2015-16 year and were honored at the August Business Meeting. Surprise – all 17 were on hand to accept certificates and congratulations from Attendance Co-Coordinator Anna McArdle and fellow members. Combined, that’s a total of 209 years of perfect attendance.

To achieve this distinction, members attend weekly meetings, but when they miss can achieve a “make-up” though participating in several options like attending a club board meeting, district, region or federation meetings, conferences or conventions, or participating in certain club events and other projects.

Here’s the list of these diligent members.

Sell Those 2017 “Ghosts” Calendars

Each member is asked to participate in our annual Air Race Calendar sales. The 2017 “Ghosts” calendars of vintage airplanes are still only $15 and presales have begun. The calendars will also be sold at the Reno Air Races by artist Dan Whitkoff and April out of SITM’s sponsored booth at the Reno National Championship Air Races, September 14-18.

To kick-off the sales, Committee Co-Coordinators Kay Dunham and Diana Dillon led members at the July 28 meeting in a game pitting members at tables against neighboring tables. The subject was guessing the dates of some hilarious officially designated days and unofficial holidays. Winning answers were rewarded with “smarties” candies and the two tying tables received “Payday” candy bars.

Doris Phelps has calendars at each Thursday meeting for pick up. Members can also turn in their sales money to her at each meeting. Contact her if you need calendars delivered. Proceeds will benefit projects funded by SITM’s Service Fund Treasury.

Winning a tie was table #7 which included Penney Leezy, Annette Friedlander, Jan Bogikes and Barbara Atwell.

Tying table #5 with their pile of “smarties” was Patti Doty, Bev Perkins and Marilyn Pearson.
