The food and ser- vice by the Auburn Elks was as always excellent. Our thanks to the Chef and his entire staff. I could say many good things about the luncheon but none could top the best attraction of having our lovely ladies there to really brighten up the event. Our birthday boys for December are: Gary Alenza, Ron An- drade, Terry Cooney, Frank Hampton, Tom Hart, Gene Hengge- ler, Charles Hultberg, Rich Johnson, Mel Lehr, Eric Moulton, Charles Onnias, Randal Peters, Dave Pratt, Rich Reese, William Rhyne, Dan Sokol and Robert Souza. A special Happy Birthday to them all, and many more. We raffled off many bottles of wine, and had some really great entertainment by our own stand-up comedian Doug Perry. I must admit that I had forgotten how really funny Bob Newhart was. It is always great to reminisce. Thanks Doug and did I hear SNL is looking for you? I want to express my sincere thanks to all the members of Branch 37 for the great support I received during the past year 2017. Our group in my opinion are TOPS. Also, it needs be not- ed that we are really loaded with talent and all work very hard to insure our successes. Letters of appreciation were presented to Al Anderson for his many efforts in our Bocce Ball Activity, and to our Activity Coordinator Kent Mac Donald. Again all of our staff leaders deserve great applause for a job well done. This is my last “BIG SIR Corner” and in closing let me say It was both an honor and a pleasure to have served as your 2017 “BIG SIR”. I will see you all at the BEC's and our monthly luncheons. Luncheons the Table Tube and Drawing contributions are our main sources of

income so please continue to contribute. If you took the $4 left

from the $20 you used to buy lunch and divided it between the

tubes and the drawing you would help the branch plus get a chance to win back your

money.

SIR OF THE MONTH

Our SIR of the month of January is William Connor. He was born January 13, 1938 in Detroit, Michigan, and was number two of eleven children. He had five brothers and five sisters, and, as expected, money was tight. He attended Monrovia HS, be-fore joining the Air Force at age seventeen. He finished high school in Victorville, and a two year post-degree while in the service, stationed at George Air Force Base. The commanding of-ficer was Chuck Yeager. He also had an assign-ment in 1956 in Korea, and was discharged in 1959. At both, he was in intelligence, tracking military movements. He began civilian work with the air research division of the Garrett Corporation, where he worked for two years making equipment to fire missiles from submarines. In 1964, he joined the LA Sheriffs Dept. where he worked for 25 years, first as a dep-uty and after training in 1980 & 1982, as a handwriting expert in the crime lab. In 1986, he moved to Newcastle, to work with the Placer County for two years. He then worked for sixteen years with the Department of Justice in Sacramento, retiring in 2004. During his career as a handwriting expert, he testified in over 350 cases, including the 1992 murder case of Eric Houston, who mur-dered 7 teachers/students at Olivehurst HS, and was the young-est convicted and sentenced to death row. William’s testimony proved premeditation, and was key in the case. William joined SIRs in 2013. He met his Lady Linda at a drive-in restaurant in Inglewood and they were married in Las Vegas in 1960. After 52 years of marriage, 4 sons, 5 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren, he lost his wife. Four years ago, he met his Lady Joyce at Anytime Fitness, and they enjoy country-western music/dancing, train trips to Reno, and Monterrey. He is a regular at fitness, will be 80 this month, and is in great shape. His advice is to enjoy family (must have a lot of enjoyment with that large family) and life. It was a pleasure to present this profile of William. Dave Wheatley, Profiler
