PRIDE vs HUMILITY

PRIDE

• One of the seven capital

sins. Pride is undue self-

esteem or self-love, which

seeks attention and honor

and sets oneself in

competition with God

(CCC 1866).

HUMILITY

• The virtue by which a Christian acknowledges that God is the author of all good. Humility avoids inordinate ambition or pride, and provides the foundation for turning to God in prayer (CCC 2559). Voluntary humility can be described as "poverty of spirit" (CCC 2546).

AVARICE vs LIBERALITY

AVARICE

• An inordinate love of

earthly things, an

immoderate desire to

possess, keep, and

LIBERALITY/GENEROSITY

• a spirit of generosity for a proper and worthy charity that may involve the donation of our time, our money, or other possessions.

ENVY vs KINDNESS

ENVY

• Resentment or sadness at another's good fortune, and the desire to have it for oneself. One of the seven capital sins, envy is contrary to the tenth commandment (CCC 2539).

KINDNESS/CHARITY

• The theological virtue

by which we love God

above all things for his

own sake, and our

neighbor as ourselves

for the love of God

(CCC 1822).

WRATH vs PATIENCE

WRATH/ANGER

An emotion which is not in itself wrong, but which, when it is not controlled by reason or hardens into resentment and hate, becomes one of the seven capital sins. Christ taught that anger is an offense against the fifth commandment (CCC 1765, 1866, 2262).

• A form of temperance

LUST vs CHASTITY

LUST

• The inordinate craving

for, or indulgence of,

the carnal pleasure

which is experienced in

the human organs of

CHASTITY

The moral virtue which, under the cardinal virtue of temperance, provides for the successful integration of sexuality within the person leading to the inner unity of the bodily and spiritual being (CCC 2337). Chastity is called one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit (CCC 1832).

GLUTTONY vs TEMPERANCE

GLUTTONY

• Overindulgence in food

or drink. Gluttony is

one of the seven capital

sins (CCC 1866).

TEMPERANCE

The cardinal moral virtue that moderates the attraction of pleasure and pro- vides balance in the use of created goods. It ensures the mastery of the will over instinct, and keeps natural desires within proper limits (CCC 1809).

SLOTH/ACEDIA

• A culpable lack of

physical or spiritual

effort; acedia or

laziness. One of the

capital sins (CCC 1866,
