T HIS year The Singer Car Club of SA had the responsibility of arranging The Rootes Group Run. It is with gratitude that we thank our member Deidre Solly who resides at Victor Harbor and is also a Historic Motor Vehicle Club (HMVC) member for proposing, negotiating and fine tuning this run so that we were able to enjoy the fellowship of not only Rootes Group members but also HMVC members over a sit down table service two course luncheon in the HMVC amenable club rooms at Encounter Bay. We departed our arranged meeting place just over Blacks Road on South Road at 10.10 a.m. Usually this particular run does not generate a large contingent of starters. Not this Sunday, we had approximately 60 people and the weather in Adelaide was estimated to reach 35°C. The Encounter Bay region was likely to be 10 degrees cooler and this proved correct. Our journey down was uneventful with a stop at the Farmers Markets at Myponga. PRESIDENT’S REPORT

WhEN you read this you will have received another example of our revamped magazine. i hope you like the look of it. Our editor Jeff Vale is looking for more content so your

contribution by way of articles, photos or anything of interest will be greatly accepted. You can send them to Jeff by email at [email protected] the social front those who attended Pete & Pat Oxley’s breakfast enjoyed a hearty breakfast, good company and a lot of fun. We didn’t go on a car run because yours truly had the only singer there. i expect you can read all about it in sue’s article in this magazine.At last i have our singer LeMans running again after a complete engine rebuild. it has been off the road for about 2 years so i’m looking forward to driving it again. Thanks to Rob Martin for loaning his spare gearbox whilst mine is rebuilt or replaced. i have also been doing some work on the 4AD. some fuel pump problems and tappet adjustments.All British Day is almost upon us so i hope we can have as many participants as possible attend either with or without your cars. it’s always a good day and gives us a chance to promote the singer marque.We certainly miss the company of Alan Day following his passing away last year and the gap left in his contribution to the club is immeasurable, however your committee has been working hard over the past months and we are back on track and i thank you for your patience if things have taken longer than usual.it is good to hear of progress on restorations. Kevin Keany has almost completed painting the body of his 1938 singer Ten and Peter Wright has been collecting bits here and there for his 1933 singer Nine. Rob Martin has been so busy with his change of residence he can be excused from working on his stable of cars.Our committee is considering some interesting runs and i remind you to look at our calendar of events for up-to-date information.Quite a while ago i wrote an article for our magazine about my interest in singers and how it came about. it included some photo’s taken of me with the LeMans before it was restored some 50 years ago. Alongside of the LeMans was a singer 4AD. Both cars then belonged to my late brother who was a singer enthusiast from way back. i thought it would be interesting to recreate the scene now that i have both the LeMans and a 4AD. i lined them up as best i could and got sue to take the photo. i have reproduced both photographs taken 50 years apart. Can you spot the difference? ….Yes! ….the cars don’t look any older.Ivan Margitich, PRESIDENT

Amy Gillett Memorial Bike Ride as the southern Freeway had been closed off to motor vehicles for the 3000 or so bike riders. i bought some Australian grown garlic at the markets, but Pat Oxley saw some pottery that was old, English and worth the asking price. she is a collector who had just finished telling me she is trying to reduce her collection. Pat made a couple of stall-holders happy.

We continued our journey along hindmarsh Tiers Road and thoroughly enjoyed the pastoral scenery. ivan and i both noted that we did not come across any other Rootes group members as we followed Deidre’s map. We felt we were the only humans on the planet with only horses, cows and sheep for company.

We arrived at the hMVC Clubrooms at approx. 12.15 p.m. and every one was there except for Robert and sue. Pat and Pete were just behind us and Diane and Peter Wright came alongside, explaining they had to return home when their MG developed a problem, they then hightailed it from Wellington in their modern 4-wheel drive. Also behind were Jeff and Maureen Vale in “Black Betty” who made it safely to hMVC. Their journey was all the way from hillbank and Greenock respectively, so it was very much a rally cross for sue and Rob and Maureen and Jeff.

The hMVC is to be commended for their service and we ladies present had to comment on the very capable job the male members did in waiting on tables and serving us the very English comfort food dish of Corn Beef and white sauce with mashed potato, carrots cabbage and peas with dessert being cheese cake and mixed berries, all for the small sum of $12.00 per person. Tea and coffee and filtered water were also included. The best value in town i think. ivan Margitich on behalf of the singer Car Club and the Rootes Group made a thank you speech to the hMVC and Deidre for their hospitality. Deidre also displayed a sign commemorating the event to Alan Day, naming it The Alan Day Memorial Run. singer members all had a group photograph with the sign before departing for “Dennis Martin’s Motor Museum.” ivan also in his speech mentioned the passing of Alan and how his ongoing contribution and presence in our club will be missed enormously.

What an awesome collection Dennis has collected, restored and maintained, all kept and laid out with infinite care. We stayed about twenty minutes and then departed as the return

journey would be filled with bike riders returning in their motor vehicles. This is one journey not to be forgotten.

We filled up in Victor and ivan insisted putting the side curtains on our singer Roadster. he worries i may fall asleep and fall out…i think! i did say it will be hotter the closer we get to Adelaide, but it fell on deaf ears. The singer did not immediately start as we departed the petrol station, but 5th time lucky and we were on our way.

Well! Every kilometre the temperature increased and i fell asleep, waking as we hit the Willunga hill. i asked ivan if we could stop when safe to remove the side curtains and he agreed as he felt stifled also. Big Mistake!

We pulled over under a shady tree adjacent to where cars, trucks and bikes pull up waiting to enter the Main south Road. Windows off and again the car did not want to start. After 10 attempts we thought it best to wait for the motor to cool. A very helpful hillman Club member who had been on our event and driving a white and black roofed hillman hunter left the conga line of traffic and came to our aid. he opened his boot and suavely presented a spray can called “start Ya Bastard” for our use on carburettors.

Believe it or not the motor started and we again attempted to be on our way. Our hillman member “friend for life” left us the can and i promised to replace it. i also had to use it when we again stalled and shut the bonnet with attached singer tool, while ivan kept his foot on the accelerator and started the ignition. Oh! Please where is my Porsche 911? ivan and i didn’t try and turn with the traffic but went left and continued till we could turn without stopping and starting. We did this all the way home via Commercial Road. At Christies Beach we had an adrenaline rush as we went through a yellow light that became red.

i was ready to jump out but we did get round thanks to the two second delay of light change. in retrospect we were lucky as most of the lights turned green as we meandered in the slow lane till the lights were with us. All the way home via Lonsdale and hallet Cove, Brighton Road, King George Avenue and via Glenelg East to Anzac highway and finally, finally home. i was so elated to be home and i must remind Drew to find out the name of the gentleman who gave us his life saving can of “start Ya Bastard” for cars, especially old ones.

i MET up with Don schmoock recently and he showed me an article written by Alan Day in the sporting Car Club Magazine “Wheel spin” in 1967. i thought that it may be

interesting to reproduce it in our magazine.

CHRISTMAS BBQ – 6 December 2009 by Pat Oxley

iT’s a lovely day – great day for the singer Christmas Barbecue. Armed with the essential bottle of sA wine, cool drinks, meat and trifles, Peter and i headed down the Anzac

highway to meet up with other Club members at the home of ivan and sue Margitich.

We joined the M&M’s (sue & Rob), Alan O’Donnell and partner, Kevin Keany and stephen & Wendy Bitmead. We exchanged cards and kisses and sue and ivan made us very welcome with a glass of sparkling. A jolly and relaxing late afternoon followed, with such good company.

Our dear late “leader” Alan would have approved. he was greatly missed. We had a quiet tribute toast to him and i’m sure he would have returned the ‘clink’ back from his place in “singer heaven”.

We laughed and chatted until well into the evening and when all had been eaten and everyone had their fill, we gradually drifted to our cars and headed home.

Thank you sue and ivan for your warm hospitality.

CONGRATULATIONS! (late but still heart-felt) by Deidre Solly

i WAs fortunate to be invited to a party in honour of Pat and Peter Oxley’s seventy birthdays and fiftieth wedding anniversary. it

was held on the 1st August, 2009 at the Lion hotel where Peter had spent many hours over the years assisting with renovations and building. The Lion is currently owned by Pat and Peter’s daughter and son in law.

Pat and Peter’s celebration was the first function to be held in the newly opened ‘Tower Room’. On arrival people mingled with drinks while a young cello player entertained. Tasty morsels such as sushi, spring rolls and pies and pasties were handed around.

soon people seated themselves at their tables to enjoy a delicious meal cooked to perfection with a choice of steak or fish for the main meal. The waiting staff looked after us well keeping our glasses full and administrating to our needs.

The formal part of the night was when a roving microphone moved around the room for people to add their congratulations and to tell some amusing anecdotes. Pat and Peter’s grandchildren were the most entertaining.

They thanked Peter and Pat for their trips to England and all the help they had given them. The youngest grandson commented. “Most people here have known Nan and Pa for 20 or 30 years, but i have known them all my life”.

The rest of the night continued with dancing and chatter. There was an excellent DJ in attendance that first played all Pat and Peter’s favourite songs from the fifties and sixties and then she was open to requests which included Rock and Roll and Abba. Most people were up and dancing at some stage and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Pat and Peter’s family made up about 20 individuals with their four children and numerous grandchildren. A testimony to their happy marriage and a successful life when coming out to Australia, settling into our way of life, building up a successful business and constructing their manor home at Athelstone.

Congratulations Pat and Peter!!!!

Reaching the age of 70 years is worth celebrating, especially when 50 years of marriage enters the equation as well.

Many more happy days of singer driving!!!!!!!!!!

i was so upset to hear your sad news! Unbelievable! Alan was a real fighter and i thought he would go on forever. Nothing seemed to stop him.i did indeed meet Alan at the sOC Centenary and i corresponded with him for many years. he was a real trooper and a true singer enthusiast.Do you have any more details? i’d like to send out an eNEWs obit.Who will be taking over his post now? he wore a lot of hats.Best Regards, Phillip Avis, Canada____________________________________so sorry to hear the news. he was a great man, very brave with all of his health problems over the years & a singer man through & through, with friends in every corner of the globe.

i feel honoured to have got to know him so well when visiting Adelaide & indeed only had a lunch with him here in Caterham just 11 short months ago.i shall remember his friendship always. With my best regards & condolences. Dear Fellow Enthusiast,

We invite you, as a member of a Federation Club, to express your interest in the Federation’s next “Meet the Clubs” Tour. Organised on similar lines to previous tours, it will depart from Adelaide on Monday 28 March 2011 and tour the South East and Kangaroo Island.

We have tried to avoid clashing with any other special event: Easter is 22/4/2011 to 25/4/2011. School holidays will be from 15/4/2011. If you were unable to come on our previous tours we hope you will join us in 2011 and enjoy the friendly socialisation which is the hallmark of these tours.

We are pleased that the Kangaroo Island motor Club has agreed to join us as hosts and are looking forward to welcoming the Federation Tour to their Island. Negotiations are in progress with Sealing seeking a reduction in vehicle and passenger fares.

If we have whetted your appetite, please obtain an “Expression of Interest Form” from your club. This form is to be completed and returned with your $20 registration fee. We will place your details into our database to ensure you are kept up do date with future developments. The registration fee will, of course, be deducted from your entry fee when you officially enter the Regal Ramble.

It is the Entrant’s responsibility to arrange their own accommodation. Information folders will be provided.

Lobethal Grand Carnival – 3-4 October 2009 by Rob Martin

iN the Adelaide hills, less than an hour east of Adelaide, Lobethal was the scene of Australian and south Australian Grand’s Prix from 1938 to 1948. The track winds its

way out of Lobethal toward Mount Torrens and then takes a hairpin right hand turn onto the Charleston road. The track meanders through Charleston and on to another hairpin right turn onto the Woodside – Lobethal Road. The track heads back toward lobethal uphill until the outskirts and then a series of challenging downhill esses before a right turn onto the main street straight to the finish line.

The 2009 Grand carnival was a 70th anniversary re-enactment of the 1939 Australian Grand Prix which saw Alan Tomlinson win the event in a 1937 supercharged MG TA, remarkably Alan was able to attend the re-enactment as a sprightly ninety three year old.

The singer Car Club was well represented with John and Vanessa Eason in their 1939 9hP special, a pretty British racing green and aluminium boat tailed racer. James Redwood entered his very original black 1939 9hP tourer which is an identical car that James’ Grandfather drove to win the 1938 stock car race at Lobethal. i entered my 1934 LeMans 9hP roadster.

i was unable to attend the scrutineering on Friday due to work commitments and missed the start time for the saturday completely, this left only sunday to get some value from the fairly hefty entrance and license fees. sunday dawned drizzly and cold and i was in for a terrible drive to Lobethal from hillbank because i couldn’t justify the ridiculous cost of hiring a trailer. To get the car through scrutineering, numbers applied and driver briefing before the start, we left about 7.30 am and arrived intact, albeit a little wet, surprisingly the car interior didn’t get as wet as i thought it would. sue and i cleaned down the road grime from the trip over, applied the entry numbers (No. 34 ).

Our friends, Andrew and Cindy arrived at 11.30 am for the first session which started at 1.00 pm. As we had missed the two sessions on Saturday, Sue volunteered to sit out and allow Andrew and Cindy to ride in the two 3 lap sessions available. The cars were graded into “packets”, and we were in packet 5 with James. All competitors were allowed to do 130kmph in the 100k zones either side of Charleston township but had to stick as close as possible

to the speed limit everywhere else, this didn’t worry us with the LeMans only capable of 63mph (101kmph). Several competitors got into trouble with the police on Saturday, one was clocked around 190 in a 50 zone, and the riot act

was read to us at the driver’s briefing.

close as possible to the speed limit everywhere else, this didn’t worry us with the LeMans only capable of 63mph (101kmph). several competitors got into trouble with the police on saturday, one was clocked around 190 in a 50 zone, and the riot act was read to us at the driver’s briefing.

Andrew and i donned our helmets, overalls and gloves and took off in the first session amid cheering crowds down Lobethal straight, the first leg of the lap is uphill and we were passed by several of the more powerful cars. As we approached the first hairpin the adrenalin had kicked in, my caution had disappeared and i made an absolute hash of braking and turning through the corner, and then had the rest of the field pass us down the first of the open straights. i got the LeMans up to our top speed of 63.5 and managed to pass a six cylinder MG before Charleston. The MG and i swapped places until we hit the second hairpin and i took a better line through the corner and retained a lot of speed. he caught me on the rise into Lobethal but i again lost him through the downhill esses into Lobethal. The event was supposed to be a “demonstration event” but we were seriously trying to avoid last place. ha ha!! During the next two laps, i honed my technique and managed to put some distance between me and the MG. Andrew enjoyed the trip and commented on how fast it seemed in the low open LeMans, even though we didn’t make the normal open speed limit.

The second session with Cindy as passenger was a little different, firstly our rival for last was a no show (low oil pressure) and we had several groups of friends around the track to ‘acknowledge’ Cindy took a little time to get used to riding in an open car and developed white knuckle fever, i thought she was going to rip the handle out of the dash at one stage. By lap two she got used to the movement and even did a “no hands” Mexican wave to Andrew, sue and friend Dave as we approached the first hairpin. she still got nervous as we ripped through the downhill

esses, four wheel drifting, with the tyres squealing. We were pushing hard to avoid being passed by the officials follow up car which meant we would not get a third lap. On the last lap of the day we passed some pretty powerful cars, namely the Alfa Romeo P3 and the Ford V8, Black Bess. Unfortunately they were on the side of the road, The Alfa had rolled a tyre off on the first hairpin and the Ford ran out of petrol, well at least we finished!!!

The day ended with an uneventful but slow trip back home with sue following behind in the Camry as support.

i had an absolute ball “playing” race car driver for the day, there were so many special cars entered that i cannot go through them all, if you have access to the internet, you can see them all at www.lobethalgrandcarnival.com.au

We shared the roads with a great many cyclists dressed in lycra along our route from start to finish. sA became the cycling capital of the world as much of the population enjoyed the Tour Down Under. Our version of the Tour de France.

ivan and i arrived dead on time to Pat and Pete’s home in the foothills at Athelstone.

Right on our tail were Alan O’Donnell and his companion Linda in his immaculate Jag Mark ii, then Robert Martin and sue Matthews, Jeff and Maureen Vale and Diane and Peter Wright all in modern vehicles. We really don’t advertise the marque very well at the moment. Let’s do so at All British Day on sunday February 14, 2010. it is also st Valentine’s Day so we have more than one special day to celebrate.

Can you believe the rain began to fall as we made ourselves comfortable in the court yard. We all took shelter inside and Pat was about ready to have the breakfast indoors. however the rain did stop and so out we marched after a tour of Pat’s china and pottery antique treasures and Pete’s Pub room. i overheard Rob and sue saying they were going to have a bar installed in their new home like Peter’s.

Outdoors once again we decided the rain would not prevail, so the BBQ was primed and the Oxley English breakfast got underway. Baked beans, fried eggs, bacon, sausages, grilled tomatoes and toast were enjoyed by all with English Marmalade and honey on toast for afters. Unfortunately, the toaster decided to permanently retire and so some of us could only have very lightly toasted bread but

We all took shelter inside and Pat was about ready to have the breakfast indoors. however the rain did stop and so out we marched after a tour of Pat’s china and pottery antique treasures and Pete’s Pub room. i overheard Rob and sue saying they were going to have a bar installed in their new home like Peter’s.

Outdoors once again we decided the rain would not prevail, so the BBQ was primed and the Oxley English breakfast got underway. Baked beans, fried eggs, bacon, sausages, grilled tomatoes and toast were enjoyed by all with English Marmalade and honey

SPIT & POLISH PAYS OFF! by Jeff Vale

ThE weather forecast predicted a “shower or two” for sunday, February 14, so i didn’t wash my car before setting off for the Valentine’s Day run to Uraidla in the Adelaide

hills, about 80km away from my home in the Barossa Valley. A quick wipe with a polishing cloth was sufficient.

Nobody could have been more overwhelmed than i to have my sM1500 sedan selected to receive the shannons Vehicle Trophy during the afternoon.

There must have been close to 800 vehicles on display and i felt very honoured that ‘Black Betty’ was chosen ahead of so many fabulous cars.

Anyone who attended the All British Day would have to agree that it is one of the best displays of British motoring history in the country.

Peter and Diane Wright and Deidre solly did their bit as marshals which is very much appreciated by the organisers.

More than a dozen club members attended and this created a friendly atmosphere for the day.

While it was almost impossible to inspect every car in great detail, there were plenty of photo opportunities to refresh our memories when we returned home. Singers on parade at the All British Day, Uraidla SA.

Arthur is 95 & a keen golfer. He has played a round every day since his retirement. One day he arrives home miserable & downcast.

‘That’s it,’ he tells his wife. ‘I’m giving up golf. My eyesight is so bad that once I hit the ball I can’t see where it went.’

His wife is sympathetic & as they sit down she says. ‘Why don’t you take my brother with you & give it one more try.’

‘That’s no good,’ says Arthur. ‘Your brother is 103; he can’t help.’

‘He may be 103,’ said the wife, ‘but his eyesight is perfect.’So the next day Arthur heads off to the golf course with his brother-in-law. He tees up & takes a mighty swing, smacks the ball & squints down the fairway.Turning to his brother-in-law he asks, ‘Did you see the ball.?’‘Of course I did,’ replies the brother-in-law indignantly. ‘I have perfect eyesight.’“Where did it go,’ asks Arthur. Brother-in-law, ‘I can’t remember!’

Drive to Tailem Bend and turn right along the Princes Highway towards Meningie; in 7 kms turn right toward Wellington. The turn off to marina is along this short road.
