WeLcOMe to the Annual General Meeting. this past year has seen us maintain steady membership and I appreciate

the interest shown by members in attending meetings, social events and sharing of information regarding our vehicles.I particularly thank my committee who have once again taken on their portfolios with enthusiasm and hard work. Our club magazine again reflects the contribution of our magazine editor Jeff Vale, with his interesting selection of articles, photos and information on club activities and members’ profiles as well as technical information which comes to his notice.I am proud to have served as your president and the success of our club can be measured by the participation of members at our various meetings and events. the Peter and Pat Oxley Breakfast in January is testament to the interest in the club when we had a record attendance. thanks Peter and Pat for running the regular event. Our secretary Peter Wright and minutes secretary Diane Wright have been able to steer us in the right direction when it comes to the nitty-gritty of the club’s undertakings and I very much appreciate their efforts. Our vice-president Kevin Keany has taken over the helm when I was unavailable at meetings so that meetings have run smoothly.rob Martin has once more kept our finances in order and has been the overseer of our historic registration requirements. On the social front, Sue Matthews, Pat Oxley and Sue Margitich have all done their bit. Stephen and Vida Schild have kept us up to date with the restoration of their Singer 4AD and I look forward to seeing that on completion. Other members are continuing with their restorations albeit more slowly – including yours truly!thanks again to Stephen and Wendy Bitmead for allowing the use of their property to store our spare parts. I heard that our spare parts shed was spared when a grass fire crossed onto the property. I understand that thanks must go to the water bombing crew who obviously realised the importance of our shed.to all those who have assisted in one way or another, I thank you.Last year saw the National rally at Shepparton, Victoria and who cannot forget the efforts of Kevin Keany in getting his car to the “starting line”. We had a good representation at the rally.Next year the National rally is to be held at raymond terrace, NSW, so it’s time to make sure the SA contingent can make its presence felt. I am very much looking forward to it.Our club of course is more than just meetings and events. It’s a common bond that we share with our fellow members who enjoy motoring and the preservation of the Singer marque. Our committee has been able to keep membership fees at an affordable level and whilst these may have to be increased from time to time to cover price increases, I am sure you get great value for the money.I look forward to the continuation of your membership and the success of our club and thank you for your support in carrying out my position as president.IVAN MArGItIcH, President

OH NO! IT’S LATE!I must apologise for this issue of Singergram not being published on time.

there are a multitude of reasons, but all I will say is that due to many personal events during the last couple of months, there was no way I could get this publication out by the due date.

I can’t say it won’t happen again, but every effort will be made to get your magazine delivered on time in the future.

Once again, my apologies – and keep those articles coming in!

50 kilometre run across the Adelaide foothills through Kersbrook, chain of Ponds, cudlee creek, Lenswood and then forrest range. We’d actually done a reconnoitre the week before in our modern visiting a nearby open garden to ensure we were all clued up on the right directions.

We set off at 8.15am allowing 90 minutes for the journey to arrive just after the gates were due to open. And what a drive it was! you see so much more travelling at 30mph. Mind you Wendy in the passenger seat enjoyed the scenery far more, as I was needing to ensure the right gear was selected, avoiding cyclists (well racing them) and letting trailing cars past. Not to forget getting the hang of double declutching after a few months out of it. But the trip was going nicely, with the occasional waft of warm air from the engine drifting into the car

and warming us up.

I did wonder whether I could ever justify implementing the advice given to me by UK Singer Junior owner Dick Preston to improve tractability by putting in higher compression pistons and changing the cam profiles as the engine had very few miles on it, and ran so well. But it was tempting as 2nd gear often feels too low, and having to slip into 1st for some stretches just feels too much.

Anyway our journey proceeded famously, for those knowing the Adelaide hills we “shot off” Deviation road onto Greenhill road for the last 7 kilometres down to Uraidla and right on time!

And that’s where things came unstuck, on the final short climb

before the drop into Uraidla the conrod of number three cylinder decided to make a break for it and get out while the going was good. Not only did it manage to poke a very large hole in the right hand side of the block, it also put a smaller one in the left hand side, depositing cast iron all over the ground, surprising us and the cars behind even more, before coming to rest it turned out on top of the starter motor. the car stopped in a most inappropriate spot, but some passing lads helped push us to a nearby lay-by.

Should I have seen this coming? Well unfortunately yes, the engine started making a knocking noise a few hundred metres earlier and I pulled over to check it out. the fact that the engine was idling faster than normal and strongly had me beat. I took the rocker cover off to check for bad valve springs but stupidly decided it mightn’t be too bad and we could make those last 3 kilometres.

Nope terrible decision, but I suspect that the block’s bore would still have been badly damaged by the lose con-rod.

Anyway once settled into our lay-by, we had to call our son, wait an hour for him to find us then I drove back home to collect my modern and car trailer and drive back and load the Singer up. 3 hours all up. Wendy enjoyed reading a book under a tree.

We decided to complete the journey to Uraidla – after all it was only 3 minutes up the road and we found a park and flashing our entry at the gate wandered in to greet our fellow Singer members who’d heard that a Singer had broken down but details were too sketchy to be able to help. We filled them in on our trials, enjoyed a lovely hour or so having lunch and a quick look at the cars on display, before heading home to put our wounded tourer back into the garage.

So 1 week later I’ve started the strip down. fortunately I think I have a suitable block and spare conrods, I just have to hope the crank is ok (or my spare is usable), and I can get a head gasket and find someone to modify the cam. I’ve also spoken to JP Pistons re some new high compression pistons. I know I’ll be using all new fasteners for the conrods, but I may have been unlucky and had a gudgeon pin fail as the top end of the conrod was complete and no pin in sight. I’ll probably never know now the actual cause.

I just hope to find enough time to rebuild the engine in time for the 2012 Bay to Birdwood, after just completing a 3 month task rebuilding the engine and suspension on my Saab Sonett, I was planning to spend my weekends out of the shed doing other tasks. Well, as they say “the best laid plans of mice and men…….”.

I went to the cemetery yesterday to lay some flowers on a grave.

As I was standing there I noticed four grave diggers walking about with a coffin.

Three hours later they’re still walking about with it.

I thought to myself “These guys have lost the plot!”

SECRETARY’S REPORT TO THE AGM – by Peter Wright

tHIS year has been one of consolidation for the club with regular strong attedances at

meetings and club events. I am pleased to report that members’ attendance at our monthly meetings has been excellent – we regularly have 16+ members.

Many members are joining in club functions as at the recent Oxley’s Breakfast, our first event for 2012, we almost ran out of chars and table space in their huge entertainment area.

Unfortunately, some members have decided not to continue with the club as they pursue other interests and have not renewed their memberships. A former stalwart of our club, clive Hill, will be missed for his valued contribution. A letter has been sent on behalf of the club to convey our appreciation for all his work.

Sadly, one member has passed on (Alan Linton) and will be sadly missed.

the distribution of journals via the electronic medium will grow as more clubs move into this medium to distribute their magazines. currently I am circulating those that I receive electronically.

this year we saw the introduction of new club badges to members (so we all know who we are). these may be used to promote our club at various motoring events and were used by those members who were able to attend the National Singer rally in Shepparton, Victoria.

Diane and I are unfortunately unable to attend this Annual General Meeting. Please accept our apologies.

However, having now settled into the role of Secretary, I look forward to another year in this position if re-elected.

Happy Singering in 2012!

ALL BRITISH DAY AT URAIDLA – by Susie Margitich

tHe weather dawned fine and mild with clear skies and just the ticket for a beautiful day celebrating all British Motor Vehicles since their invention.

the Singer car club of SA was this year designated under the large trees off the main oval but very nice and close to all amenities. We did not need umbrellas or sunshades this year and early on it was quite cool.

In attendance this year were Jeff Vale and Black Betty, Arthur Ackland in his smart maroon Singer roadster, Pat and Peter Oxley and their cream roadster and our Maroon and cream Singer LeMans.

Stephen and Wendy Bitmead unfortunately broke down 2 kms. from Uraidla. Stephen had to journey back to One tree Hill and retrieve his towing vehicle and return home. He then dutifully drove back to Uraidla minus his vintage vehicle. Such dedication knows no bounds.

Kevin Keany and Deidre Solly are members of the riley club and the HSMV respectively so enjoyed the day with these clubs, but did swing by to pay their respects.

I don’t know if it is just me, but every year seems to get bigger than the one before. this year we had our granddaughter Sienna with us, so we saw All British Day from a different viewpoint in that we enjoyed Old McDonald’s farm and Punch and Judy.

ALL BRITISH DAY – continued

I mustn’t forget to say how much Sienna enjoyed riding in the back and having the wind fly through her hair. I wish I had taken a photo. Sienna had a great time and wants to be part of everything next year.

We missed the company of rob & Sue. they were late by one day in placing their entries and were not accepted. I find this somewhat perplexing. this is a huge event that takes detailed organising. I’m sure, however entries received close to the deadline date should surely be considered worthy of entry and participation.

I can not give the information of who won the top vehicle. We left just after 3.15 p.m.

Top: Ivan and Sue Margitich enjoy a picnic lunch beside their lovely Le Mans.

Middle: An appropriately dressed Peter Oxley explains some finer points of Singer motoring to a member of the public.

Bottom: Just how many does it take to fold a picnic rug correctly? Obviously Stephen Bitmead needed advice from Ivan and Sue Margitich and their granddaughter Sienna!

Hi Ladies and Gentlemen,

My name is Dick Preston and I am writing to you in my capacity of registrar for Junior models of the Singer Owners’ club here in what for the time being (until Scotland opts for independence) can still be called the United Kingdom!

I have two favours to ask you. firstly, having taken over custody of the club’s Junior register a couple of years ago, I have been anxious to get the register up to date and put on a computerised database footing. this process is now complete as far as the UK is concerned. this, however, is not the case as regards Juniors in Australia (and also NZ).

I have notes and entries for a number of cars in the various Australian states, but they are all based on rather old file card records and mostly dating from the 1970’s. Juniors were obviously popular in both Oz and NZ, and I suspect that there are as many down under as there are here - it would be nice to know! So, I am hoping that you may be able to help me in this respect, and would be most obliged if you were able to supply me with any info regarding your records of any Juniors you have on file.

I appreciate the magnitude of the task, but would be most obliged if you were able to help. I also appreciate that you may also be in a position of delicacy regarding details on record and matters of privacy (here in the UK, for example, we have the ‘Data Protection Act’ which bars me from giving any personal details from a database to a third party unless given permission). However, records without current owners’ personal details would be almost as useful as with, and perhaps any correspondence regarding the vehicles could be forwarded via your respective organisations? I doubt that there would be much call for the latter circumstances, but just in case...

the information I keep on file is as follows: registration number, date of first official registration, chassis number, engine number, type of body (saloon, tourer etc) colour,

current condition, plus any snippets of history available. Additionally, of course, it would be nice to know current owners’ details if possible.

What can I do in return? Well it might be interesting for you to have answers to such questions as ‘How many Juniors still exist etc’.

Also, and this might be of more practical relevance, I am seeking to have new internal gearing manufactured for the 1931-style 4-speed gearbox.

SINGER JUNIOR REGISTER – from Dick Preston

Page 11: Singergram vol 25 no 1 mar 2012

SINGERGRAM Page 11 MARCH 2012

SINGER JUNIOR REGISTER – continued

If you are familiar with these, you will know that they are a delight to use, but prone to wear with as a consequence a dreadful grinding noise (and accompanying metal flakes in the oil!) particularly in third gear. I initially thought of having just those parts required for third and fourth gears re-manufactured, but so far I have had 4 owners, particularly those using cars for VScc trials, interested in the complete set.

clearly the price for these components depends to some extent on numbers ordered. the cost of the components for the third and fourth gear set would be in the region of £350 - £400, and I haven’t yet had the first/second gear parts costed. I appreciate that this is a major cost, but if the experience of your members is in line with the situation here, spare 4-speed ‘boxes are in short supply, and many of the ones in use are showing their age.

Just for the record, I recently had some new timing skew gears made for the 1928 - 1930 Junior engines, and all of them were bought - including three sets to Oz. I have had no negative feedback as regards these gears, and I have been impressed by the quality of work that the prospective manufacturer has shown so far.

Anyway, all the best for 2012, and I look forward to hearing from you, regards, Dick Preston

A SMILE . . .A smile costs nothing, but gives much. It enriches those who receive, without making poorer those who give.It takes but a moment, yet the memory of it might last forever. No-one is so rich and mighty that he can get on without it and no-one is so poor that he cannot be made rich by it.A smile creates happiness in the home,, fosters goodwill in business and is a countersign of friendship. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad and is nature’s best antidote to trouble.yet a smile cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen, for it is something of no value to anyone else unless it is given away. Some people are too tired to give a smile – give them one of yours.No-one needs a smile so much as he who has none to give.

BREAKFAST AT THE OXLEYS – by Sue Matthews

2012 had started off with a big bang, for the SA Singer car club, with the traditional January event – “english Breakfast at the Oxley’s”. Once again Peter & Pat graciously

welcomed us into their home and cooked us a delicious english breakfast.

It was on Sunday 22nd January and a warm 36 degrees was forecast. rob & I headed off in the 1934 LeMans, estimating our travel time to be approximately 1½ hours. We had a very pleasant trip, arriving about half an hour early, without any issues – except having to pull over into the shade and apply the sunblock, and also our poor feet & legs were getting very hot.

A record number of members attended the annual breakfast at the Oxleys.

An enthusiastic line-up at the breakfast

Page 13: Singergram vol 25 no 1 mar 2012

BREAKFAST AT THE OXLEYS – continued

Wow!!! What a turnout we had. I think there were about 22 people. Peter & Pat certainly had what I thought was a challenge on their hands catering for all those hungry tummies. As usual though, they took it in their stride, Stephen Bitmead, giving a helping hand on the BBq and with Jeff Vale busily popping the toast.

It certainly was a scrumptious breakfast with eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms and baked beans – and much more.

It was also great to catch up with Max & rosemary Lane & their granddaughter along with Deirdre Solly & Stephen Schild who came all the way from the Victor Harbour area, and also our newish members Darhyl & Leonora Walters.

Our journey home did actually have a couple of issues, one being it was so hot & secondly being our fan belt broke, but it certainly didn’t deflate our wonderful day with our Singer friends.

Peter and Pat once again held a wonderful function, and I will be looking forward to our next “english Breakfast” in 2013.

thank you Peter & Pat.

Who needs MasterChef with guys like Stephen Bitmead and Peter Oxley cooking up a storm?

THE GREEN THING –

cHecKING out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman that she should bring her own grocery

bags because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. the woman apologized and explained, “We didn’t have this green thing back in my earlier days.”the clerk responded, “that’s our problem today. your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.” She was right – our generation didn’t have the green thing in its day.Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. the store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn’t have the green thing back in our day.We walked up stairs, because we didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn’t have the green thing in our day.Back then, we washed the baby’s nappies because we didn’t have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 240 volts – wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right. We didn’t have the green thing back in our day.Back then, we had one tV, or radio, in the house – not a tV in every room. And the tV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of queensland. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she’s right. We didn’t have the green thing back then.We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn’t have the green thing back then.Back then, people took the tram or a bus, and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint. But isn’t it sad that the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the green thing back then?
