Journey Programme

The SUSS Student Teambuilding Programme is a graduating requirement for all full-time students to complete within their first semester of study. This credit-bearing programme provides a platform for all full-time freshmen to kick-start their university journey together. The programme is intentionally held overseas, where students can look forward to curated experiential activities that are designed to promote cohesion, collaboration and teamwork, as well as a deeper understanding of SUSS values in relation to themselves, the environment and the community.

At SUSS, community engagement is conceived as an integral part of the University’s learning ecology, at the very heart of our social mission.”

As a full-time student, you will be able to further develop and act on your sense of social responsibility, to contribute meaningfully to society. By engaging in close collaboration with community partners of your choice, you will discover, develop and deliver a community engagement endeavour that you are passionate about. You will take personal ownership over your contributions, learning through experiences, to make a sustainable difference in the community.

The community engagement graduating requirement may be fulfilled through one of five Community Engagement Programme options: Community Service-Learning, Community Engaged Work Attachment/Internship, Community Engaged Project, Social Entrepreneurship or Global Service-Learning. At SUSS, we prepare you for an active, fulfilling and meaningful life.

Service-LearningCommunity Engagement

The SUSS Core is a dedicated cluster of courses grounded in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences that forms the foundational and common experience for all SUSS undergraduates. It focuses on emerging and complex local and global issues, and teaches students to think critically, reflexively, empathetically and creatively to provide personal responses as well as responses as trained professionals based on ideas of human values and human potential.

Learning to tackle important questions central to creating a better society starts with asking questions about human values, human development, and human potential.”

As with everything at SUSS, your overseas experience is flexible. You may also opt to work in an overseas organisation, completing your work attachment and overseas experience at the same time.

This degree programme prepares early childhood teachers to be inquiring, progressive educators who are developmentally appropriate, inclusive and respectful of young children’s ideas and individual meaning-making processes. The courses provide a foundation for individuals to function effectively within Singapore’s licensed child care centres and kindergartens. Well-prepared and experienced early childhood educators can eventually enter multi-disciplinary work when individual educators have had sufficient experience working as early childhood teachers.

Graduates from the programme can look forward to fulfilling careers first and foremost in the growing early childhood education sector; and with sufficient reflective experience and cumulative knowledge, be able to branch out to community work, public education, social entrepreneurship, as well as governmental and non-governmental organisations.

As world governments increase their focus on healthy development of young children, early childhood education has become an in-demand career because of societal needs and an increased awareness that the early years are crucial for a child’s lifelong development.”

You will acquire the critical managerial and analytical skills needed to become an effective marketing professional, while gaining networking, presentation and teamwork skills that are essential for success in an increasingly competitive business environment. Marketing graduates can look forward to careers in areas such as sales, advertising and promotion, corporate communication, product management, marketing research, retail marketing and digital marketing.

The logistics and supply chain management (SCM) industry is a key pillar of Singapore’s economy. Global companies in new growth sectors — such as aerospace, biomedical sciences, chemical, energy, oil and gas equipment, technology, and high-value collectibles — have chosen Singapore as their key regional base in Asia. Intra-Asian trade is set to increase significantly as Asian countries evolve to become major consumer markets. Increasing economic integration through the ASEAN Economic Community and China’s Belt and Road Initiative will spur further demand for logistics services.

These dynamic and disruptive changes to the economic landscape present new opportunities for logistics and SCM professionals to be deployed and develop innovative solutions to meet their organisations’ complex needs. This will drive further demand for logistics and SCM talent in the digital economy.”

SUSS?Why Choose

When I started my Service-Learning project with Pertapis, I was not expecting the challenges faced, such as liaising with community partners and administrative processes. Through all this, I learnt soft skills which helped me take on challenges towards the later part of my university life, which carried on to my work attachment as well. To the new students, I would say, make good use of the four years, enjoy the process, don’t be too focused on grades, and most importantly, take advantage of the opportunities that the university provides - to travel overseas and gain more exposure!”

I wanted to study something that had direct application to my career, and that will be meaningful. Meaning is defined differently by everyone, but for me, my life experiences have steered me towards social work in SUSS. The human condition has always intrigued me and having been part of the social service sector, both as a volunteer and a beneficiary in the past, I hope to make an impact on it as a professional in the future.”

I liked the feeling of giving back to the society and university, and that was how I discovered that I love my community. The environment in SUSS really helps to boost this passion, as you get to meet like-minded people who care about the community too.”

The multifaceted approach to education was one of the main reasons for my choice in choosing SUSS. Today, 4 years later, here I am graduated with tons of experience, meaningful friendships and a wholesome and well-paying job all because of my decision to choose SUSS.”

In an ever-changing environment, it is those who are adaptable and willing to step out of their comfort zone to embrace uncertainties who will excel. SUSS has made me realise that learning extends beyond the classroom and that the world is my classroom.”
