Reformed BTECs

• Examined for first time last year.• Examination 20% of final mark.• More theoretical content.• Harder to get Level 2 (C equivalent).

GCSEs Getting Harder

• Move from criterion referencing to norm referencing.

• Results will be fixed according to KS2 SAT scores – a set number of grades available which cannot be exceeded.

• Means boundaries are shifting significantly.

Reformed GCSEs

• Reformed GCSEs in English, English Literature and Mathematics examined for first time in 2017 (current Year 10)

• Reformed GCSEs in most other subjects sat in 2018 (current Year 9)

• Graded 9-1 instead of A*-G• Band 5 is new national expectation and equates to a C+/B-• Band 7 equates to A• Band 8 and 9 equate to A*- and A*+

Reformed GCSEs

• Increased subject content in most subjects, especially Maths and Science – A level content brought down to GCSE level.

• Coursework removed in most subjects and reduced significantly in others.

• All courses to be fully examined at the end of the course with no modules or early entries.

What does all this mean?

• The students who succeed will have worked very hard from the beginning of courses in Year 9.

• Revising regularly and thoroughly is crucial.• Parental support in this is invaluable.
