The Simsbury Senior Center’s mission is to
provide a community focal point where older adults
come together for programs that reflect their
experience and skills, respond to their diverse needs
and interests, enhance their dignity, support their
independence, and encourage their involvement with
the Senior Center and their community.

Services, opened a
medical equipment
Loan Locker on Dec. 1.
The Simsbury Loan
Locker makes durable
medical equipment
such as walkers,
wheelchairs, canes,
knee scooters, and bed
rails available for free to
people who are experi-
encing a temporary or
permanent disability.
It will initially be at
the Apple Barn at
Simsbury Farms, 60A
Old Farms Road. All
pick-ups and drop-offs
AARP Tax-Aide Volunteers will provide free individual
income tax filing assistance for Connecticut and Federal
taxes on Thursdays from Feb. 6 to April 9, as well as
Tuesdays from March 10 to 31.
The program is open to anyone who needs assistance,
regardless of age, income or town of residence.
Ninety-minute appointments run from 10 a.m. until the
last appointment ends at 4:30 p.m. Please make an
appointment by calling the Simsbury Senior Center at
(860) 658-3273. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept
walk-ins.
The Tax-Aide volunteers will be located in the Simsbury
Public Library’s new Tariffville Room on the lower level.

Line Dancing
Line dancing may increase flexibility,
cardiovascular health, strength and lung capacity,
as well as improve bone health, balance and
coordination. Adding light weights increases the
health benefits!
(Weights are optional.)
In addition, a
21-year study in the New England Journal of
Medicine found that among several forms of
exercise studied, only dancing reduced the risk
of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of
dementia, and it was by a dramatic 76 percent!

Dr. Jared Day, PhD, will
present two programs that
examine the historical roots
of two of America’s most
cherished national and
religious holidays.
On Thursday, Jan. 9, from
1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Dr. Day will
tell the story behind Martin
Luther King, Jr., Day.
On Thursday, Feb. 13, from
1:30 to 2:30 p.m., he will share
the story of the creation and
evolution of Valentine’s Day.

If Simsbury public schools are canceled, all day and evening classes
and programs are canceled at the Senior Center. If schools are
released early, all classes and programs starting 12 p.m. or later are
canceled. If school is delayed, classes and programs run on their
regular schedule unless we contact you. If schools are on vacation,
tune to WFSB, WTNH, NBC30 or check their Web sites. Every effort
is made to make up canceled classes and programs.
SIMSBURY ROCKS PROJECT
Join Simsbury Girl Scouts to paint
some of the 350 rocks that will
become part of a town-wide
scavenger hunt in celebration of
Simsbury’s 350th Anniversary in
spring 2020! This free intergenera-
tional project by For All Ages offers
a joyful way to spend an afternoon,
from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays, Jan.
13, Feb. 10, Mar. 9, and Apr. 6.

Cheese Day
Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and
dairy items, along with canned
goods, are given out the fourth
Wednesday of each month for
those eligible. Next Cheese Days:
Jan. 22 and Feb. 26.
Bread Day
Every Tuesday, after 9 a.m., breads
and bakery items are available in
the Rotunda. Donations are provid-
ed by Panera Restaurant,
Brookside Bagels, Fitzgerald’s
Foods, 1820 House, and Starbucks.
SNAP
(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program) Foodshare volunteers at
Eno Hall provide application assis-
tance. They will submit your applica-
tion to the state for processing. Doc-
umentation is required. Call Social
Services for information or an ap-
pointment. Next SNAP days: To be

Mobile Foodshare Truck
Mobile FoodShare truck will be at
the First Church of Christ parking
lot, 689 Hopmeadow St., at 1 p.m.
on alternating Mondays. Eligible
residents will pick up donated fruits
and vegetables. A schedule
including Avon and Granby dates
can be obtained in the Social
Services office.
CHOICES
Connecticut’s program for Health
Insurance, Outreach, Information
and Eligibility Screening. Carolyn
Krystiniak in Social Services is a
certified CHOICES counselor who
is available for appointments.
Food Closet
Provides nonperishable food items
and toiletries to income-eligible
residents. Donations are always
welcome and help us keep the
shelves stocked.
Energy Assistance
KEEP WARM THIS WINTER! Social
Services is taking applications for
the Energy Assistance Program.
This program helps households pay
for primary heating bills incurred
after Nov. 15. Benefits are also
available for those who have heat
included in their rent. Income
guidelines depend upon number in
household. Asset limits apply. Docu-
mentation is required. Please call
for information or an appointment.
Dial-A-Ride
A Dial-A-Ride pass is available to
Simsbury residents only, who are
disabled or over the age of 60: $25
for an individual or $35 for a couple
for a year. Residents can use the
Dial-A-Ride buses around town, in
Granby and Avon, as well as Jump
On Board Senior Center trips. In
addition, two out-of-town medical
rides can be requested. Passes can
be obtained in Social Services.
Remember: If there is no school
due to inclement weather, for your
safety Dial-A-Ride does not run.

The Secretary for Social Services, a
Notary Public, will notarize your
documents, free of charge. Please

AARP Smart Driver Course
The Senior Center and Public Library are
co-sponsoring an AARP Smart Driver course from
1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Library.
The course will teach you current rules of the road,
and defensive driving techniques, and how to
accommodate age-related changes in vision,
hearing and reaction time.
The course costs $15 for AARP members, and $20
for nonmembers. Payment can be made by check
on the day of the course. Please register at the
Library or the Senior Center.
