Simple Baby Shorts Pattern & Tutorial

What you need: Main Fabric - (see size chart for yardage)

Elastic for waist- 1 /2" wide braided

Sewing Machine

Choosing Fabric & Pants Pattern:

Budget Friendly Ideas: Because of the wide range of fabrics that you can use with

this pattern (see below), it is easy to find cheap or free fabric!

Check out your old T-shirts, dress shirts, dresses, curtains, scrap

fabric, sheets, blankets, table cloths etc. You could also thrift

shop for some large/extra large jeans for denim!

This pattern allows the sewer to use whatever type of fabric that they like. However, there are a few things you

want to consider. See below.

SLIM Pants Pattern:

This style of shorts is great to use knits such as jersey (t shirt fabric) or fleece. Disposable diapers and cloth

diapers can be used when using a knit. If you choose to use a woven fabric such as cotton quilting fabrics, or

denim, it does not leave much room for cloth diapers, but this pattern fits great with disposables!

COMFY Pants Pattern:

This style is great to use woven fabrics such as cotton quilting fabrics, or denim. It's great for cloth diapers to

have extra wiggle room! This pattern is also an excellent choice for babies with roily polly thighs.

Determine Shorts size by the clothing size that the child usually wears

12-18Mo.

Step 1.

3/8 yd.

18"

-

Determine which pattern to use (SLIM or COMFY).

Print pattern and piece together with tape.

Hint: If you use card stock or other heavy paper for printing, it will make re-use easier.

Shorts Leg Bottoms Step 2. Use the pattern to cut 2 of desired size. Make sure that the pieces MIRROR each other. Hint: This image explains the nature of the pant legs.

Step 3. Start the bottom hem by folding the bottom of each leg 1 /2" toward the wrong side of fabric. Press. Hint: the 'wrong side' is the side that will be the inside of the shorts.

Step 5.

Hint: An easy way to recycle a T-shirt into baby shorts is to simply place the pattern piece on an uncut shirt. Pin and cut.

Step4. Fold the bottom hem ANOTHER 1 /2': This hides any raw edges.

Sew the hem into place by sewing 1/S"from the inner edge ofthe hem. Use a straight stitch for knits or woven fabrics.

4.

Step 6. Layer the pieces together with the'right sides' facing each other. Hint: The 'right side' is the side that has a print if applicable.

Step 8. Sew the front seam and the back seam as shown. Hint: Sew 3/8" from the edge. For knit fabrics, use a zig zag stitch. For woven fabrics, use a straight stitch.

Step 10.

Step 7. Pin the front and back seams together. Don't skip the pinning.

Step 9. (Optional) If you would like finished edges, serge or sew a zig zag stitch on the edge of the front and back seams.

Adjust the shorts so that the seams are in the front and back. Line up and pin the crotch area.

5.

Step 11. Sew the crotch area 3/S"from the raw edge. Use a zig zag stitch for knit fabric and a straight stitch for woven fabric.

Step 13. Start the waist hem by folding it 3/4"toward the inside ofthe shorts.

Step 15. Pin around entire waist to hold the hem into place.

Step 12. Snip off the leg tabs. Optional: Finish the raw edge by serging or sewing a zig zag stitch on the raw edge.

Step 14. Fold waist hem another 3/4"to hide all raw edges.

Tuck a folded ribbon or tag into the hem at the back seam. This is VERY functional and you'll be glad that you did.

6.

Step 16. Sew the waist hem 1/S"from the inner edge. Keep a 2" opening for inserting elastic. Use a zig zag stitch for knit fabric and a straight stitch for woven fabric.

Step 18. Overlap the elastic 1 /2" and sew together. Hint: Before sewing, make sure that the elastic is not twisted.

Step 20. Turn the shorts right side. Raid your husband's t-shirt drawer and make another pair!

Step 17. Attach elastic to safety pin and 'fish through' the waist hem.

Step 19. Tuck elastic into the hem and sew the opening closed.
