American Sewing Guild: Houston, Tx Chapter

Presidents Corner Guess what Members? Our Newsletter, Sew and Tell, won this

year’s ASG National Award at Conference in Indianapolis! Cue the applause! We owe it to Margarita Johnston, NL Editor, for doing such a fantastic job.

National Sewing Month is here! What will you do to Advance Sewing as a Life Skill and Art? Where will you go to get your creative juices flowing? Whom will you tell about the therapeutic benefits of fondling fabric? How about a road trip to the Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange? There’s a great fabric and yarn store RIGHT NEXT DOOR! What about taking a young person to your local library and perusing the books in the sewing section? Or taking advantage of the Fashion University website to watch the myriad of videos available? Your fellow Members would LOVE to see what YOU did in the next issue of Sew and Tell!

The 2016 ASG Annual Conference was great So much so, or rather “sew much sew”, there’s an article included in this issue. Next year’s Conference will take place in Orlando, Florida July 27-30. I just don’t know if I can handle the combination of sewing and Disney…I love them both!

The Houston Chapter Annual Meeting will take place November 13th at the La Quinta Post Oak. This year’s Challenge:Rearrange Your Stash” We will have a STASH SALE FUNDRAISER! If you would like to challenge yourself to clean out your personal stash to donate for the Stash Sale, there are a few options we’re coordinating for you to do so. We’ll keep you posted through e-blasts, the website, Facebook and snail mail if necessary! The STASH SALE FUNDRAISER will be accepting cash or checks. No credit cards this time, sorry!

Lastly, thank you Members for making my years as President of the Houston Chapter a worthwhile experience. It has been a privilege to serve in this capacity. I especially thank the Members who paved the way before me. They were instrumental in teaching me the ropes and definitely set the standard. Thank you! I look forward to being a worker bee behind the scenes once again, where I feel most comfortable. But hey, performing outside of the comfort zone is where growth happens individually and collectively. So on that note, I encourage YOU to serve on the CAB.

Kind Regards, Michelle Gafford

Sewing Room Spotlight

Featuring Linda Lutich

By Margarita Johnston

Linda and her husband, Lou, designed and built their

Dream Home in 2010. This custom home included a

Dream Sewing Room for Linda: 675 square feet of

sewing machines, a 5’ x 10’ x 41” cutting table, thread

racks, fabric cabinets and pattern drawers; wall boards

loaded with

scissors,

zippers, rulers;

shelves organized with interfacing, buttons,

notions and books; plastic bins labeled with

every sewing detail imaginable; ironing boards

and steam presses; design pin boards; and

even a computer and a 24” Flat screen TV to

take Craftsy Classes and watch Sewing Videos.

Whew!

Linda loves a bargain. She has purchased her

machines, fixtures and fabrics at great discount prices. She currently owns 12 sewing

machines, each reflecting a part of what is important in her life through the years.

Linda’s sewing career began at 11. Her mother was an avid seamstress, making all her

daughters clothes - all four of them! She taught Linda to sew on a White machine. Linda

used fabric scraps to make her First Edition 1959 Barbie doll a wardrobe. Her little

creations were such a hit that she began

selling them to her friends for 25 cents each.

She eventually opened a mail order business,

even selling Barbie wedding dresses for a

dollar! She sewed

her own clothes

through the 1960s

and 1970s,

customizing to fit

her tall frame. She

continued to sew

as she began her

career as a Flight

Attendant.

However, living in a house with 3 roommates was not conducive to her hobby, since she

had to drag out the machine and ironing board every time she wanted to sew.

She joined ASG in San Antonio around 1996.

Linda purchased a Chandler Blind Hemmer when she began

sewing the décor for her new home. Her talents can be seen

in each room of her house: master bedroom includes

curtains, comforter, and a

bed skirt. The dining room

has dramatic 22’ foot

fabric panels; the living

room has two wide Roman

shades with a generous

assortment of matching

throw pillows. The kitchen

barstools are upholstered

in coordinating fabric –all

reflecting Linda’s sewing talents.

In 1997 Linda took a Mike Maldonado Shirt Making class in San Antonio. He

recommended a Juki Industrial machine for faster results. It was, however, too

intimidating for the long run.

Linda and her husband purchased their third boat in 2013, so

Linda purchased a Sailrite machine to sew custom boat cushions

and curtains. She needed a heavy duty machine which could

handle the heavier canvas often used for boat décor. The machine

can actually handle making sails, which Linda has not needed to

make “Thank Goodness!” Never wanting to miss an opportunity to

sew, she keeps an Elna 62C machine on the boat.

While at the Houston Quilt Festival in 2014, she fell

in love with the Brother Dream machine P.E.

Embroidery for Ideas Novis XV8500D and has kept

busy

embroidering

clothes,

costumes, and

pillows for family

and friends, even

personalizing Tote

bags for hostess

gifts.

For general garment sewing, Linda has inherited her mother’s Pfaff 130, which she keeps

next to her Brother 7500 Pace Setter as backup machines, still creating lovely gowns for

cruising, garments for exercising and the perfect outfit for her 50th High School reunion!

She puts her three sergers to use making some outrageously

fun costumes. The Brother Serger is kept set up for rolled hems

and the Juki Serger is kept set for regular serging. The Viking

Serger (inherited from her mother) will be on the boat, as she

can’t live without a serger!

Her machine collection is rounded out with a Singer

Featherweight, and a Janome Coverstitch.

Linda is enjoying “sewing more than

ever!” and Lou chimes in “I’m a Sewing

Widower”, but it is clear her sewing has

not only created a lovely home, but has

brought a lot of fun to her family and friends. She continues to

work for United Airlines (46+ years) but her flying interferes with

her sewing! She is not yet ready to retire and give up those

layovers in Los Angeles, New York and Merida, Mexico, to go to

her favorite fabric stores!

Thank you for sharing your Sewing Room and inspiring us with

your sewing!

Linda’s 6’8” son in his

custom costumes!

Fall Book Review By Robbie Brewington

1,000 Clever Sewing Shortcuts & Tips: Top-Rated favorites from Sewing Fan and Master Teacher

By Deepika Prakash Pattern Review.com published 2010

If you’ve spent any time on PatternReview.com, you’ll know that it is a vast repository of knowledge and inspiration. The Knowledgebase, Forums, Articles, and Classes are just fantastic and cover a wide range of topics. An unbelievably wide range of topics. Now the one thousand best shortcuts and tips have been collected and published—and it’s a wonderful volume to add to your sewing bookcase.

The chapters are:

Sewing Gear Set up Your Sewing Room Design and Pattern Prep Fabric, Thread, and Notions Layout, Cutting, and Marking Fitting Sewing Finishing Embellishments

There are also “Master Classes from Master Teachers,” with entries from Sarah Veblen (Secrets for Sewing Knits), Susan Khalje (Essentials of Sewing Fine Lace),

Kenneth King (Sew Lamé Like a Pro), Shannon Gifford (Rolled Hem Magic with a Serger), and Anna Mazur (Elegant Bead Embroidery).

Here are a few samples of the wisdom contained in this book (I paraphrased to keep it short):

#393: Fleece has a nap (I had no idea!) #350: Use fusible interfacing to shorten or lengthen a pattern

instead of adhesive tape. #240: Cocktail ice cube trays are the perfect size for bobbins and

they are stackable and easy to label.

Page 10: Sew & Tell Volume 37 Issue 3 Fall 2016 Sew Tellfiles.constantcontact.com/6360d50b001/96f990d3-0680-44cd-b9e8-088... · Sew & Tell ASG Member Linda Lutich, ... used fabric scraps to

#233: Use a small strip of Glad Press’n Seal to keep bobbin thread

from unwinding. It’s reusable and readily available. (This is a great idea for those thread spools that lack a groove or other securing device—like all my serger threads!)

#756 and #757: two easy ways to rip out serger seams (not that I ever have to rip out a seam. #46: Use Dawn Power Dissolver to clean sticky gunk from the soleplate of your iron

I could go on and on (there are a thousand of these little gems, after all, but I suggest you pick up the book itself. The book also has a great index. I would have preferred a spiral binding so the book lies flat, but this is such a minor thing. Plus, I could always take it to Kinko’s myself and have it done.

2016 ASG National Conference Adventures By Michelle Gafford

I absolutely enjoyed attending the ASG National Conference. This summer it was held in Indianapolis, Indiana. I had not had the opportunity to visit this part of the country until now, and I would love to return to see more! That is REASON No. 1 for attending Conference: TRAVEL. REASON No. 2: EDUCATION. There are a myriad of classes, seminars, workshops and lectures of which to take advantage. This year, I learned about Schmetz needles and their manufacturing process; I learned how to choose print fabrics for garment

making which will better suit my coloring, texture and facial shapes; I learned how to use a plain knit T-shirt and change the neckline eight different ways; I learned how to dissect a ready to wear handbag in order to make it and put my own spin on it; I learned how to make unquantifiable amounts of hem finishes; I learned about the National Button Society and I learned how to make the Anti Ouch Pouch for mastectomy patients. There were other classes, but a girl can only be one place at a time. Make new friends is REASON No. 3 for attending Conference. Not just ANY friends, sewing friends! These people share your fondness for fabric, your pattern pathologies, and of course, thread tantrums as well. How can you NOT add them to your contacts list? It’s an automatic win-win. REASON No. 4: Shopping in the Vendor Hall. Need I say more? Fabric, notions, patterns, ready wear, ASG collectibles, embellishments, jewelry, wood carved seam rippers, and foot massagers. The FASHION SHOW is REASON No. 5 to attend Conference. ASG has some incredibly talented Members! Starting with whoever has volunteered to organize all the entries. Our very own Janelle Archer did a standout job as this year’s Conference

Page 12: Sew & Tell Volume 37 Issue 3 Fall 2016 Sew Tellfiles.constantcontact.com/6360d50b001/96f990d3-0680-44cd-b9e8-088... · Sew & Tell ASG Member Linda Lutich, ... used fabric scraps to

Fashion Show Organizer. Might I add, coordinating several entries from across the country, which will come together sight unseen, is a daunting task. Kuddos to Janelle!

Be sure to check out National’s website for the slideshow. My favorite entry was a seersucker ball gown…just gorgeous and perfect for the outdoor Summer Gala for which it was made. I hope to see more of you at the next ASG National Conference in Orlando, Florida July 27th-31st, 2017.

It’s going to be GREAT!
