    Great! You have taken our deal. Now, before

    we start the treasure hunt you should

    remember the important ideas below.

    Work is the product of force andthe displacement.

    Work is done when the following is

    present:

    1. Force exerted

    2. Displacement caused by the

    force

    3. The same direction of the forceand the displacement

    The formula for work is W = Fd

    where:

    W is the work done

    F is the force exerted

    D is the displacement

    The unit of work is Joules. 1 Joule = 1

    Nm

    So let us

    begin! Ready?

    GIVEN:GIVEN: FORMULA:

    SOLUTION:

    FINAL ANSWER:

    F = 500D = 1m W = Fd

    W = 500 N x 1m

    W = 500 N-m or 500joules

    500 joules

    m = 2 kgd = 1.5 m

    W = FdW = Fd = mgd

    W = 2 kg x 9.8 m/s2 x 1.5 mW = 19.6 kg m/s2 x 1.5 m = 29.40 kg m/s2 . m

    W = 29.40 N-m or 29.40 joules

    ANSWER CARD #6

    Clue: IF YOU GO UNDER IT YOU WILL BE TRANSFORMED.

    Here is your guide to the answers of the task given

    to you.

    Question:When a force isapplied to do work onan object, does theobject alwaysaccelerate?

    Answer:YES. Because when a forceis applied on an object the

    object will either gain or

    change its velocity. The

    change in velocity over a

    period of time will bring

    about acceleration.

  • 7/21/2019 SIM on work

    22/28

    The direction of work done is

    dependent on the direction of theforce acting on it. If the force is acting

    on the north and east the work is

    positive but when it acts on the south

    and the west then the work is

    negative.

    Are you sure you will still make it?

    When an object changes its velocity

    as when it moves from rest or it went

    faster or when it slowed down, in any

    of these cases the object is said to be

    accelerating

    Work is equal to the product of force

    and displacement.

    Weight of an object is the force

    exerted by an object.

    Weight is equal to mass

    times gravity

    Gravity is = to 9.8 m/s2

    To have work the force and displacement

    must be in the same direction.

    Work can be negative and positive

    The unit of work is joules

    When the force is directed at an angle then

    the x-component of the force must be in

    the direction of the displacement.

    If force is acted oat an angle then

    W=F x cos x d

    Most often students perception of Physics as a subject is difficult. This stigma attached to Physics post a challenge on

    both the teachers and the students as well. Teacher finds it very hard to break the walls of this perception and

    infiltrate the idle minds of the students. The students as well is very much challenged in coping with the how tounderstand different Physics concepts. This interplay between students and teachers lead to rising of different

    strategies and intervention to help strengthen this link. Fortunately the author is privileged to validate one of these

    interventions the use of the Strategic Intervention Material.

    This material is intended to help students with the topic on work. The skill sought to be enhanced by this Strategic

    Intervention Material is the students analytical skills in understanding different concepts in Physics as well as the

    problem solving skills which is most often used to further understand Physics concept. And these skills are found to be

    least mastered by students even when dealing with other topic in Physics.

    In this study students were given a pre-test on the topic of work. Pre-test mean score was taken. After which the

    Strategic Intervention Material (SIM for brevity) was given to them for use and post-test was also administered andmean score was also taken. The Pre-test and Post-test means were compared and the results show comparable

    differences which led the author to conclude that the SIM is effective in improving students performance.

    There were 40 students who were randomly chosen as respondents for this study. These students belong to the lower

    50% of the graduating class of Academic Year 2012-2013 base on the first quarter results of the periodic test.

    1.The data reveals that out of the 40 students only 26 students took the post-test

    because of reasons beyond the control of the author.

    2.That out of the 26 students who took the pre-test and post-test 21 of them has

    increased their post-test scores. This is equivalent to 81% of the students whotook both exams.

    3.The mean score in table reveals that there is a marked difference in the results

    from the mean pre-test score of 5.269 to 8.577. This further reveals that the

    scores increased from the pre-test to the post-test. This is attributable to the

    used of the Strategic Intervention Material.

    4.From Table 3 it reveals that regardless of the students gender, there is an

    increase in the scores of students from the pre-test to the post-test. Further, the

    mean scores of female students who took both exams are higher than that of the

    male students with a mean of 7.714 and 7.250 respectively.

    5.That the Strategic Intervention Material if used in a student learning situation can

    The Strategic Intervention Material is effective in improving the scores of

    students.

    The author recommends that the SIM be used over a big sample of the

    population of fourth year students taking the Physics subjects or even better ifadministered to the entire population.
