SILVER GATE YACHT CLUB

As I write this article, the fires are still burning all over San Diego county. Our Club has turned into an evacua-tion center for some of our members. What a true gift, that in this time that we are experiencing a local disaster, we have a place to go and be comforted by friends.

The General Membership meeting was last Friday night and the member-ship elected your Board of Directors for 2008. The Board will be as fol-lows:

Commodore -------------------------------David Lancaster Vice Commodore-------------------------Simon Dekker Rear Commodore ------------------------George (Bill) Sedgwick Jr Staff Commodore ---------------------(TBD) Secretary -----------------------------------James Holmberg Treasurer-----------------------------------Jacque Keats Port Captain -------------------------------Tony DiLeva Fleet Captain ------------------------------Brent Nielsen Director -------------------------------------Randy Ames Director -------------------------------------Richard Benscoter Director -------------------------------------Lyn Byles Director -------------------------------------Sandy Hardaker Director -------------------------------------Donna Herpick Director ---------------------------------------- Jack Lambert

Everyone that I talked to is very excited about the work in front of them and are ready to get started. This looks to be a very strong Board of Directors and I am sure that we can handle all that is put on our plate.

Some good ideas came out of the General Membership meeting and we will be looking into the ideas presented and see what we can tailor to meet our needs on the Project.

As we are already starting to gear up for the next year, I would like to thank all the Board of Directors, Committee Chairs and Committee mem-bers that served in 2007. You have all made a difference and I for one thank you!

Change is in the Air

I was so moved by the display of support at the last membership meeting. I want to thank you all for your continued support as the past few months have been ex-tremely demanding. As I re-ported in the membership meet-ing, there are a couple of low hurdles to overcome on the pro-ject, but everything looks positive to move forward. The construc-tion delay is due to the final re-view of our drawings by both the port and city. News from the port indicates that our marina draw-ings have some comments, which from all indications are mi-nor. Once these drawings are approved by the port, then the marina can be built.

In terms of financing, the bank has approved the construction loan for the marina and will fi-nance the entire project. The bank notified the port yesterday and now the final estoppels are being put in place with the port. Neither the bank nor the port be-lieves there is a problem working this last issue out as it is very common on leased property. Both the bank and the port are focused on obtaining the resolu-tion from the Port Board of Com-missioners on November 13th. Our Port representative indicated that the SGYC agenda item has been placed on the consent agenda at the time this article was written. Both the bank and port have indicated that the reso-lution is fairly straight forward and there should not be a prob-

lem.

As I have indicated in the past couple of membership meetings, the loan value, interest rates, fi-nancing charges, and soft costs of the project will force the club to increase the $155 assessment to $210 per month. This represents a $55 increase per month for flag members and a $22.50 a month for junior flags. This increase is imperative and will place us in the realm of servicing a loan principle of $7 million. It also ensures that there are sufficient funds associ-ated to the construction loan for the house on or about January 2009. Please refer to the slides on the project board in the club.

The marina project was hit by the dredging cost coupled with con-struction loan finance charges to bring the total project estimate to just over $3.5 million. The total project cost estimate for the house at this time is about $5.8 million. There is still an opportu-nity to curtail costs on the club house, which will undergo rebid-ding as soon as working plans are received from our contractor and architect. This should transpire by February of 2008; there will be an opportunity for members to review these drawings and every inter-ested member should attend the monthly house construction meet-ings at the club. We are on a time table whereby we must sign the 40-year, pre-negotiated lease no later than October 2008. Once that lease is signed we have 18 months to complete the club-house.

The club also needs to convert the construction loan for both the marina and house once each phase of the project is com-plete. Our bank has agreed to act as our long term busi-ness loan provider and amor-tize the loan for a period of 30 years. Business loans come in terms of 10 year terms, so the club will require three of these loans in suc-cession. 10-year notes on business loans are a com-mon business practice today as I have briefed in several membership meetings.

I will point out that the in-crease is necessary. The club requires the support and a resolution will be placed before the membership expe-ditiously. The club needs to have the increase to com-plete the project with respect to our agreement with the port and to convert the pro-ject to long term financing. Vote “Yes” on this proposi-tion.

On a last note, please feel free to call me on sugges-tions you may have. I would appreciate hearing from you directly and responding to your inquiries in a candid conversation that is construc-tive. This is a time whereby we need to stick together to ensure the future of our club.

As you read this, we have docks in the parking lot being prepared for placement in the water. The livea-boards have been moved to the north side of “A” dock to ensure they have power and their pump out ser-vice can reach them.

We have asked many times for you to remove your dock box and dingy in preparation for our dock construc-tion. There are many dock boxes, dinghies, kayaks and other items still in slips and on the docks. Please remove all of this from the marina or place it all on your boat. You or the club may need to move your boat on short notice and there will not be room for your dingy, kayak, or dock box on the dock, during construction.

Many of you have not filled out the emergency contact and information

sheet we have requested. Please fill one out at the office, so we know how to contact you or an alternate contact who can speak for you.

We will continue to have updates on the dock construction as we move along. At present we are working with Bellingham to ensure that we have all the pilings driven before Least Tern season. This has re-quired the changing of the construc-tion phase plan the latest plan is dated 18 October 2007, and posted in the club. Please be patient with us as we move through this process. Please think before you call myself or the Port Captain with “I” or “me” statements. We are doing the best we can with very limited space. Re-member, this is your club; help us move through this construction

The one thing we will say again is that if you remain in the Silver Gate Marina you will be inconvenienced at some time during construction and you will be moved. We again recommend that if you must or want to use your boat during construction you need to consider other berthing.

Please do not expect the staff to know the status of the dock construc-tion. Contact Tony or Richard who will be glad to answer your ques-tions. We are managing the docks. Celeste and Robert are busy with their own responsibilities and do not have the time necessary to run down your answers.

Best Regards, Tony Dileva – Port Captain Richard Benscoter – Dock chair

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the chairs of all the fleets for another successful year at SGYC.

Brad Poulos, Family Fleet - - The races continue to get more competi-tive with more members joining the fleet. Next year watch out for Jeff Taylor’s “Shooting Star” and Kent Prater’s “Interlude”. The race com-mittee was very active, in not only the Beer Can Series, but fleet championship races sponsored by SWYC and SDYC. This shows real camaraderie and true “Corinthian Spirit”.

Dave Endert, V-32 RC Fleet - - This fleet continues to grow as do the spectators. The guest dock is an

obstacle course on race days with everyone enjoying the action. This may be the best fun sailing you can have without leaving your dock.

Brent Nielsen, Cruising Fleet - - The raft ups were very successful this year. By all reports, the can-celled raft up at Santa Margarita Yacht Club turned out to be a lot of fun and the chili cookoff was a hit. Start practicing now for next year. SMYC is a very gracious host and has the best anchorage anywhere. Make plans for next year!

John Alger, Power Fleet - - Thanks to all the power boaters who participated in the Beer Can Series as Race Committee and pin boats. John urges you to participate or go

along as an ob-server on the Predicted Log Races. These guys know how to party. I attended the after race party at SGYC in Au-gust and got excited. John can hook you up with racers who would wel-come you as a guest/observer.

Jim Walsh, Fishing Fleet - - Silver Gate Yacht Club came in second place behind SWYC in the MAW Tuna Challenge. Weigh in those fish next year.

I especially want to congratulate Brent Nielsen, SGYC’s new Fleet Captain! Any event he plans will be fun, so join and have a great time in 2008!

C ongratulations are in order to Robert and Katrina Svoboda on the birth of their first child, Adam Karel Svoboda! Looks

like little Adam is already getting a grip on line handling.

The fourth week of October 2007, Silver Gate became a refuge with members helping members.

As members came to their boats late Sunday and through the first days of the week, a mi-cro community came together and supported each other and their needs.

Many of the displaced members assisted in the movement of the liveaboard boats to their new temporary homes on “A” dock. This greatly helped the club but also provided a much needed

distraction from the constant television bombardment of homes burning.

Monday night football was the most attended Monday nights that anyone could re-member.

We who were displaced want to thank everyone in the club and the club staff that made a very unpleasant time very tolerable for all of us dis-placed. We also thank Com-modore Dave and Carolyn for providing pizza on Tues-day night.

Just wanted to say a personal “Thank You” to all of those who have come out and raced with the V32 Fleet. It is always a fun and relaxed day at the docks. The next race is our “TURKEY DAY RACE” on November 10. For our new sailors, if you are in need of assistance, please feel free to come a little early and I will be happy to

help you get your rig tuned and race ready. All members are encouraged to come, participate and share in the FUN. Come and WIN your TURKEY SURPRISE!! Dave Endert V32 Fleet Chair 909-576-7017

For many years the Marines have played a vital role in our wheel chair regatta. In fact if were not for the marines our community service to the less fortunate would become very limited in the cli-ents we could serve every year. Well when Marines asked to use our parking lot to hold a car wash to support their Marine Corps Ball it was the easy answer, “yes”. They came and they washed a lot of cars for club members and others who dropped in off the street. We are happy to report that they raised $1200 in support of the Marine Corps Ball! Many of these Marines are looking forward to helping us again next year with wheel chair re-gatta.

Voyaging to Hawaii in the ‘Trans-Pac’ race or Pacific Cup is no small undertaking. Silver Gate Yacht Club member, Mr Howard Enloe, of El Paso, Texas, and his team onboard the 60ft trimaran ‘LoeReal’ had begun efforts to make the boat ocean-ready, months in advance. Imagine then, the moment when we (the delivery crew) broke the news that the dag-ger board had snapped some 5 miles outside of Long Beach on our trip up from San Diego to the start! Fortunately the Morelli and Melvin office of naval architects were already in a dinghy with the intention of motoring out to greet us and so with numerous pairs of extra hands and a small rubber boat, we made short work of get-ting the dagger board to the dock and carting it off to a shop for a ‘fast-fix’ repair.

A terrific turn out of spectators in craft ranging from sports fishing boats to Hawaiian-style paddle-

boats spilled out into the Pacific to watch the Sunday July 15 start. As the breeze dropped under ten knots, fa-vourites to win - Roy Disney’s ‘Pyewacket’ and Roger Sturgeon’s ‘Rosebud’ had already vanished. By the time we finally tacked away from Catalina, day was slipping into night, but the breeze was back and was building steadily. One reef followed another in quick succession as the So-lent jib was downsized for the staysail. ‘LoeReal’ was a wet and wild ride as padeye bolts dripped onto sleeping feet and the windows salivated around the rim.

‘Yesterday I wanted to go home. Today I want to go to Tahiti!’ Exclaimed skip-per Tim McKegney on the fourth day when the sky broke out into small fluffy cumulus and the trade winds filed in. From then on, life was all about the boat. Flying fish leapt out of the way in droves. The sun dried off salty clothes. Trimaran ‘LoeReal’ was tearing through the fabric of the sea, with white rooster tails snaking behind.

8 ½ days at sea cracking speeds of 18-25 knots and Oahu appeared on the horizon. The land was lit up with white and orange polka-dots of light. The air was warm and balmy. After 17 freeze dried meals, we were all ready for a tasty burger and a re-freshingly ice-cold ‘Mai Tai!’ In true ‘Trans-Pac’ style, we were greeted by a very merry band of supporters and a most impressive spread of food and beverages! Our thanks again to the family behind the Colson construction company for sponsoring it.

Ah yes. And then there was the de-livery back! In chasing an expanding high pressure system north in the hope of favourable breeze, we were closer at one point to Anchorage, Alaska than San Diego California! But after some 5 days on a miser-able north-easterly course, our trudg-ing was rewarded and a pleasant westerly breeze glided us under spinnaker nearly all the way home.

The transformation of Mr Howard Enloe’s 60ft trimaran ‘LoeReal,’ from a junkyard dog with no mast ex-Universal Studios, to a competitive racing machine, has taken years since the boat first starred in the movie ‘Waterworld’ with Kevin Cost-ner. To then take line honours in the recent ‘San Diego to Ensenada’ race, in record time is surely a dream come true!

On the morning of Friday October 5th, the conditions were perfect for ‘LoeReal.’ It was blowing a gusty 20-25knots from the NW with a short choppy sea creating some great surf-ing conditions. We were off! At the final gun, we ripped away from the committee boat at a startling 23, 24,

25 knots of boat speed, going on to set a new boat top-speed of 27.49 knots as we furled up the jib and rolled out the gennaker! Whoa!

Mr Enloe was poised in the cockpit, video camera in hand, capturing the action. Water flew through the tram-polines, engulfing me and the other trimmer in the cockpit. The odd mis-chievous rogue wave slapped against the main hull and splashed over the cabin top. It was wet!

Whether to take the inshore route round Punta Morro in the hope of picking up positive current but at the potential risk of being fouled in the kelp beds versus the offshore route of added miles, was the great on-board debate of the moment. Stay-

ing away from the coast, we were rewarded with a stiffer breeze. Slowly we crept passed the big guns ‘Peligroso’ and ‘Stark Raving Mad.’ By this time, the atmosphere onboard was quietly ecstatic under a smooth veneer of focused con-centration. We were beginning to reel in the monohull giant, ‘Magnum 80,’ which had beaten us in by a day in the Trans-Pac race to Ha-waii.

Onto the other gybe and heading straight for Bahia Todos Santos and Ensenada, we crossed the line after 3 hours and 27 minutes to claim the barn door trophy. A delicious round of fine Mexican margaritas nicely finished off the day!
