You’ll be amazed how fast it’ll go.

We asked year 11 students to look back over the last 5 years.

How did you feel when you moved from primary to secondary school?

It was scary as it was a new place and a bigger school. I felt vulnerable and uneasy and it was a much bigger building and

lots more teachers than I anticipated. At first I was nervous I only knew two people from my school.

however, I made friends with a lot of people. I thought I might have got lost but we had buddy’s that showed us the way.

What did you enjoy the most and least?

Moving around school rather than staying in one classroom and having only one teacher for a core subject.

I enjoyed meeting new friends as I was the only one from my primary school.

I loved the sports trips even though I wasn’t a sporty person it was always fun to go out with PE and help out/compete in the events. I really enjoyed science as a lesson as I found it so interesting, my favourite was the practical's.

What are you going on to do once you leave Lathom High School? Go to Wigan and Leigh College and study BTEC Health and Social

Care. I’m going to college to study childcare. I have chosen to go the Wigan and Leigh College to do applied

medical which should hopefully be an adventurous experience. What would you like to do when you are older? Either go into children’s nursery or midwifery. I would like to go to university to get qualifications to be a KS2 or

KS3 teacher. I would love to be a Doctor, doing any kind of science or medical

work will fulfil part of my dream.

Every school is different but here are Year 7 students, answers to questions on what it is like moving from

primary school.

Was it worrying at first, moving up?

Yes. I was worried because I thought it was such a big place when we visited and I was worried about what the teachers

would be like.

Yes because I didn’t know many people at Lathom and I didn’t want to get lost.

Yes because it was a brand new school and much bigger than my primary school, I was worried that I would get lost.

Was it a big change from your last school?

Yes, because the school is a lot bigger with lots more students. Also we only had one teacher in primary whereas we now

have 8 or 9 teachers and many different lessons .

Yes, because in primary we only had one teacher teaching us throughout the year but now we have lots. Also there are

different floors in high school and more students.

Yes, because in our primary school we had 1 teacher to teach us all of our lessons plus the school is much bigger and there

is a lot more students.

Are there

There are rewards at the end of each term for attendance and behaviour.

We get trips for having good attendance and at the end of the each term prizes can be won.

There are a lot of privileges in high school, this makes me happy. If you have good attendance you get reward trips out and

if your tutor group has the best attendance, you get a prize.

Is there anyone to go to if you have a problem?

Yes, any teacher in Lathom High School will help you if you have a problem, if I ever have a problem, I go to The Zone and

they will help.

Teachers always listen to your problems so I will probably go to them. If not them The Zone would be my next option

because they always help students with their problems too.

My mum is who I would go to because she understands me and I trust her.

What do you want to do when you leave school?

I want to go to college, university to become a Primary school teacher and author.

I don’t quite know yet. I am still thinking what I want out of life. I definitely want to go to college and maybe go to

university.

I want to go to college, university and eventually become a vet as I love animals!

Last word of advice?

Never judge a book by its cover.

This school may seem scary but when you get used to it you will have the best time!

If you’re ever scared or worried going to High School, talk to an adult and don’t keep it to yourself.

The next few years will be some of the most exciting of your life.

Along the way you will have opportunities that your parents

couldn’t dream of. And by the time you’re 18, you’ll be qualified

and prepared for employment or university. But that’s all a

long way off. Right now your job is to relax, go with the flow,

and remember you can do anything – if you put your mind to

it. Here are 6 easy steps to help you on the way:

Your health and happiness are just as important as

how good you are at maths and English.

You’ll get five hours sport a week—but don’t worry

if football’s not your thing. School offers lots of other

clubs.

When you’re older, why not volunteer at the local pet rescue, coach a kids’

sports team or help out at a hospice? It’s all good

experience. You’ll have a tutor who

you’ll meet every morning.

We work with Careers North to provide you with independent careers advice in school, get

work experience or meet people doing the jobs you’re

interested in.

The school nurse is one of a team of people who will teach you how to stay

healthy.

SCHOOL IS CHANGING IN NEW AND EXCITING WAYS

JUST IN TIME FOR YOU!

You’ll be in education or training until you’re 18, helping

you gain the skills, qualifications and confidence to get a

job you enjoy. School is changing to give everyone the

chance to make the most of their opportunities.

You are the most important person here! Whether you

want to save the whale (or just say your local [pool),

teach in Tokyo or build bridges in Bahrain, it all starts

here. Enjoy!

with a different teacher. At the end of this year you’ll choose which subjects you

want to keep doing, and which you don’t.

You’ll carry on with the same subjects, but in a bit more

detail. You might also be able to try something new, like an

after school club.

You’ll start working

towards your GCSEs.

You’ll finish your GCSEs and decide what you want to do next! Whether you stay at

school, go a college, or start working while you are training, your parents, teachers,

careers advisor from Career North will help you make up your mind about what works

for you.

don’t to make choices

on own. Talk to – of who help you

pick the right .

Whichever route you choose, you’ll develop the practical English, maths and

ICT skills you’ll need to deal with everyday situations at

home, at college and at work, as well as how to solve problems

and work with other people.

Make it count Whichever route you choose, do your best. Qualifications won’t be all they look at. But future employers or universities will use them to help decide whether to take you on.

You might be able to apply for financial support to help you continue in learning. www.direct.gov.uk

Apprenticeships An apprenticeship means you can work, and earn money, at the same time as training. Lots of skills, from engineering to childcare, are best learnt on the job. Plenty of companies are happy to pay for you to go to college while working for them. Find out more www.apprenticeships.org.uk

Diploma A Diploma gives you the inside story on the world of work, and is also a great preparation for university. You’ll pick up practical skills, work on a project, do exams and coursework – and spend 10 days on work experience finding out what it’s really like.

Foundation Learning Foundation Learning will provide exciting flexible options that could help you go on to take GCSEs, a Diploma or an Apprenticeship .

A levels Become a mini-expert in the subjects you like! You’ll study just a few, including choices you may not have had before, like psychology or economics. After a year you’ll take AS levels, a mix of coursework and exams, and then decide which subjects to take on to full A level (A2) in the following year.

All these will prepare you for Further Education, Higher Education or employment.
