Women are less likely than men to have life insurance, and if they die their families could be thrown into financial chaos. "Underinsuring the female, whether she is a working or stay-at-home mom makes no more sense than underinsuring the male. There are just too many uninsured couples putting their families at risk," says Beth Wood, assistant vice president of business and women's markets at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual). It may be difficult for families to discuss the sensitive issue of life insurance, but MassMutual has developed a Family Risk Discussion Guide to help families begin the conversation. The guide is available at www.massmutual.com. LIMRA -- a worldwide association of insurance and financial services companies -- reports only 36 percent of women are protected with group life insurance at work and only 40 percent have their own individual policies. One recommended plan is to consider whole life insurance, which offers a death benefit, dividends and a cash value that is guaranteed to grow each year. "People don't generally deal with this difficult issue. People may make the same decision their parents made -- they believe the man is the breadwinner and that is the only income you protect. That is a very risky practice," says Wood.

Do you have high ambitions for 2010

to get healthier, eat better and, oh

yes, change the world, all at the

same time? It's actually possible - if

you resolve to eat Fair Trade

certified foods at every opportunity.

By choosing Fair Trade foods, you

can help improve the lot of workers

in developing countries ... one

forkful at a time.

When you see the Fair Trade

certified mark on food and other

goods, you can be assured that the

producers in developing countries

have received a fair price for their

products, allowing them to make

investments into improving their local community and infrastructure.

October is Fair Trade month - but you certainly don't have to limit yourself to only that month to buy

and eat Fair Trade foods. With Fair Trade certified ingredients ranging from pasta and spices to cocoa

and tea, you have many options for making a positive contribution to the lives of producers, sustaining

the earth and the global economy. And now you can even use Fair Trade certified spices to enhance your

dishes.

Visit www.frontiercoop.com/fairtrade for more information on Fair Trade and a selection of Fair Trade

Certified food products you can buy online. Courtesy of ARAcontent

More and more people are resolving to be more giving, and to share what they have with the less fortunate. The current economic climate, however, presents something of a challenge to people who want to give. Here are some creative ways to give that won't cost you cash. * Find nonprofits that offer unique ways to make a difference. The Web site www.JoinMyVillage.com, presented by the humanitarian organization CARE and the food company General Mills, invites people to help fight poverty in Africa. Simply log on to JoinMyVillage.com and join a village team and you'll unlock $1 to help people in Malawi. You can keep unlocking dollars by answering fun quiz questions or by inviting friends to participate. * Use your talents. Do you have a way with words and a passion for language? You might just be a great volunteer to help adult and child immigrants improve their English skills. Whatever your hobby or passion, you can almost certainly find a way to translate it into volunteerism. * Mine your house. There are lots of local organizations that accept gently-used clothing, household goods and more. Make sure that the items you donate are usable and clean.

he culture of women is ever so evident in today's world of quality time with your loved one.

I have been totally amused over the huge excitement women have had with football

over the past three months. Women have been spending more time with their husbands

and boyfriends watching football and even going as far as having the girls come over to

have their own football watch night, how awesome is that!!

We had the pleasure of going behind the NFL to speak to the women who make it

happen on the front line. Starting with Wilma McNabb, mother of Donovan McNabb,

quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, and President of the Professional Football

Mother's Association, that help moms cope with transitioning from college to professional football. Mrs.

McNabb affectionately known as the team's mom is one of the Eagles' biggest cheerleaders, and she never

misses a game.

This week Miami, FL will host the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl 2010, the two largest sports events of the year,

which will draw millions of sports fans to South Florida.

Behind the scene of the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl is the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee which consist

of a couple of dynamic women, Nan A. Markowitz, Director of Operations, who will logistically keep Super Bowl

fans safe and Catherine Minnis, Director of Community Outreach, has encouraged minority business

participation, these women are amazing. The mission of the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee is to

prepare the South Florida region to host Super Bowl XLIV, the Record-Breaking 10th Super Bowl in South Florida

and to fulfill all bid obligations to the National Football League.

Also behind the scene are the wives of the NFL football players, who are gearing up to host several events

leading to Super Bowl Sunday. Ashley Brown, President of Off The Field, and other NFL wives are hosting a

variety of events for women. So if you are headed to Miami for the Super Bowl, there will be plenty of exciting

opportunities to tackle from Celebrity Golf Tournaments, and Spa Retreats, to Fashion Shows and Lady

Conferences. I'm looking forward to having a spectacular time, see you there!

Breeze through to read the profiles of other empowering women, namely Mayor Shirley Gibson, Helen Vella, the

likes, and our cover lady, Dr. Teresa Hairston, Publisher, Gospel Today.

Dr. Hairston is a woman of faith, vision, integrity, and perseverance. She had a passion to communicate to the

urban community to influence lifestyle changes, through the power of God; she did it with grace and ease.

2010 is the Year of Double Blessings, Double Grace… This is the Year of the Woman. Go With Your Passion! It’s

KKKKAREEM AREEM AREEM AREEM AAAABDULBDULBDULBDUL----JJJJABBAR ABBAR ABBAR ABBAR Inspires fellow patients with chronic myeloid leukemia to take charge of their disease. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, one of the greatest basketball players of all time, was diagnosed late last year with a rare type of blood cancer known as Philadelphia chromosome- positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML). Now, he is partnering with Novartis Oncology and has a message for fellow patients with Ph+ CML - work closely with your doctors and take all the necessary steps to actively manage your disease for the best possible outcomes. Abdul-Jabbar's own cancer was diagnosed in November 2008 when a blood level test revealed an abnormally high white blood cell count, which is an initial indicator of the disease. Ph+ CML is a cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow; according to the American Cancer Society, approximately 5,000 new cases are expected to be diagnosed this year. "When I learned that there are patients out there who regularly skip doses of their medication and aren't keeping their doctor appointments, I was stunned," says Abdul-Jabbar. "I'm telling my story to encourage fellow patients to take charge of their health - work closely with your doctor, monitor your disease and treatment responses and, above all, take your medicine."

For more information, Abdul-Jabbar is encouraging fellow

Fall is a time of transition. Not only do you need to prepare your skin for the cold months ahead,

but it's time to transform your look from light and airy to soft and classic. Focus on a few beauty

basics - skin, make-up, fashion, and fragrance - and you'll have all you need for a fantastic fall.

GREAT SKIN IS ALWAYS IN As the weather gets cooler and drier, your skin needs extra moisture to keep it supple. Keep

warm weather memories alive with a scent reminiscent of summer and try Coconut Milk Body

Lotion from The Body Shop. Treat yourself to the finest ingredients - ethically sourced community

trade virgin coconut oil from Samoa - and get soft, smooth, and deliciously scented skin.

ULTRA-MODERN EYES This fall, dramatic smoldering eyes are what's

fabulous. To achieve fall's hottest eye looks, Aston gives these sizzling tips:

* Smudge together forest green, shimmering grey and lilac to create a chic, modern, smoky eye. * To create an intense, sultry eye look, look for a palette that features a warm trio of rich brown,

golden copper and shimmering sand hues. * Try a metallic eye definer. Alone, it can be used to line and define or use it to complement

your favorite www.thebodyshop-usa.com eye shadow. "Choose shades that contrast your eyes to make them pop," says Aston. "Apply color to the eyelid or along the lash-line as

an accent for impact."

PUCKER UP Autumn lips are washed in soft color. International make-up artist Chase Aston says this fall is all about the perfect pout and recommends Colourglide Lip Color from The Body Shop.

Aston shares his tips for luscious and gorgeous lips:

* Use a lip liner for added definition and to help prevent feathering. * Enhance the natural color of your lips by gently gliding on lip color. For added pout power, use

a lipstick/concealer brush. * Look for a shade that complements your skin tone. With 37 shades, you can easily find

eliminate the sweaty body odor. Febreze products eliminate odors, leaving behind a fresh, clean scent.

* Keep your home fresh for the "fifth" quarter and into the following week

by refreshing your furniture with Febreze Fabric Refresher.

Visit www.Facebook.com/febreze throughout the NFL season for freshness game plans from the experts, including Olivia Manning. And visit www.FebrezeGameDay.com to sign up for a chance to win four tickets to

mentor, philanthropist, and mother to NFL superstar, Donovan McNabb, is ideally suited to championing her new role, responsible sports parenting. Mrs. McNabb join

forces with other moms who established themselves over 10 years ago to support their sons and families transitioning from college football into the NFL. On a new endeavor, 'The Dr. Oz Show' and the National Football League join forces as Mrs. McNabb and 19 other moms of NFL Players go head-to-head to improve their fitness and health, while their sons tackle each other on the field. Wilma McNabb, a former registered nurse, is executive director of the Donovan McNabb Foundation and president of the Professional Football Players Mothers' Association. Mrs. McNabb is widely known to America for her starring role playing the "Team Mom" in the Campbell's Chunky Soup advertising campaign since 2002. Originally the soup giant used a faux mother who portrayed her in Chunky's ''mama's boys.’’ After watching an actress play Donovan's mom, Mrs. McNabb had an epiphany, she wanted to play herself. Wilma received the call she'd been waiting for, ''I remember our agent called and said, 'they want to do something different and they want to use you,''' she said. Now, she is the only mother -- real or not -- in the campaign, which is part of Campbell's sponsorship that makes it the National Football League's official soup. She's terrific.''

G O S P E L H E R I T A G E A N N O U N C E S SP E C T A C U L A R 2010 Black History Month Celebration February 18-19, 2010, Jacksonville, FL

“Our goal is to preserve the Gospel heritage and perpetuate the Gospel legacy,” says Dr. Teresa

Hairston, founder of Gospel Today Magazine and the Gospel Heritage Foundation. In 1996, Hairston founded the Gospel Heritage Foundation and has fostered the growth of the organization.

“The 2010 Gospel Heritage Praise & Worship Conference is probably the largest international Gospel

celebration during Black History month!” explains Hairston. “We are extremely grateful for all the artists and attendees who come together to be part of this phenomenal two-day event.”

Bishop Hezekiah Walker, Grammy award winner

and GHF Board member stated, “We are educating and equipping people to be able to go back and do music and ministry better in

their local churches. Gospel Heritage really is making an impact—not only during the Heritage

weekend, but across the Gospel music industry and in churches across the nation!”

Bishop Walker will be part of the teaching staff in February as well as the artist line-up on the

closing night Gala Concert. Other artists that will be a part of the Gala Concert include Jonathan Nelson, Bishop Paul S. Morton, Vanessa Bell Armstrong and Pastor Donnie McClurkin.

During the evening, a special “Heritage” tribute will be given to Elder Bernice King.

Featured during the weekend, will be keynote speakers, Bishop Noel Jones, Minister Kirk Franklin, and

Bishop Rudolph McKissick, the pastor of the host church, Bethel Baptist Church; Stellar-award winning artist, Byron Cage, J. J. Hairston & Youthful Praise, and several other notables. There will also be a

“HERITAGE GOT TALENT” Artist showcase during the conference with judges and cash scholarships.

At its core, Gospel music is a genre that uplifts and inspires its listeners. Although the music industry

has been challenged through the recession, there are still thousands of independent artists who are still making strides toward careers and dreams. During the conference, many of these artists and

producers will teach and network with others to raise the level of the entire genre.

Teachers for the weekend will include: Dr. John Guns, Dr. Judy McAllister, Min. Stephen Hurd, Min.

Steve Lawrence, Carla Williams, Monica Coates, Elder Roland Hairston, Bishop Andy Lewter, Jr., Dr.

Jeff Patton, Trent Von Lee, Revealed Dance Ministry, and Ascension Dance Ministry.

The conference offers four tracks of instruction: Pastors, Praise Dancers, Ministers of Music/Praise and

Worship Leaders, and Youth.

Several leading Christian media outlets align to support the Gospel Heritage Foundation (a not-for-profit organization) including: The Word Network, SGN Radio Network, Streaming Faith, Gospel City

and Gospel Today Magazine.

Conference Registration information can be obtained at: gospelheritage.org or call 770.719.4825.

ishop Rudolph W. McKissick, Jr., is Senior Pastor of Bethel Baptist

Institutional Church, located in Jacksonville, Florida. He returned to Bethel in 1995 as Assistant Pastor and has been Senior Pastor

of the Bethel Church since the year 2000, sharing in that role with his father, Dr. Rudolph W. McKissick, Sr.

Since his return to Bethel in 1995, over 9,000 thousand souls have been added to the ministry, bringing the active discipleship to over 12,000. McKissick is

uniquely gifted at blending styles of worship from the very contemporary and urban down to the traditional without sacrificing one for the other. It has resulted in a church that is built

around a unique diversity of persons from various age groups and cultures who all gather

together in celebrative worship.

The musical blessing and vision of Bishop McKissick, Jr., has resulted in the production of three

Word and Worship CDs that have received both local and national critical acclaim, with the project entitled, “The Right Place” debuting at No.5 on the Billboard charts.

In addition to his musical talents, first and foremost, he is a powerful messenger of God who

has established himself nationally as an outstanding preacher and teacher, with a gift and

passion for the teaching of homiletics. He has been noted in The African American Pulpit as one of the “Twenty to Watch” and has had sermons published in several books and

ver two decades ago, a four-page newsletter called the Gospel

SCORE emerged on the scene with a focus on gospel music and the Urban community. Although Teresa Hairston had no business

plan, no financial backing, and no experience in publishing, she did have a vision and she had faith.

In the beginning Teresa encountered several challenges; she worked two jobs to make ends meet, had three small children, and

was divorced with no disposal income. With her eyes on her goal, Teresa borrowed $300 to publish Gospel Score. Shortly thereafter,

the Urban community referred to Gospel Score for news and updates on what was going on

in the gospel music industry. Teresa had found her niche.

After three years of trial and error, and following the will of God, Teresa and her

family left New York for a more conducive

lifestyle and relocated to Nashville, Tennessee to a Gospel community where

she saw tremendous opportunities, and over the next five years, Gospel Score became a

household name.

Committed to the success of her ministry,

Teresa took a leap of faith and quit her job

to concentrate all her efforts on the

development of her magazine.

In 1995, Teresa Hairston revamped her

business and renamed Gospel SCORE,

Gospel Today. Gospel Today became the lifestyle publication for Christians and the

official publication for several Christian

conferences.

Known for its quality content, relevance, celebrity status interviews, and impressive

special features, Gospel Today quickly

gained national support and recognition.

Dr. Teresa Hairston is a woman of God, minister of the Gospel, self-proclaimed

publisher, and founder of The Gospel

Heritage Foundation. Today God is still showing Dr. Hairston favor with the upcoming

celebrated Gospel Heritage Praise & Worship Conference, which is center stage to one of

the world’s largest international display of God’s Kingdom in total praise.

We had a chance to speak to Dr. Hairston on the Silke Endress Talk Radio Show, and here’s

what she had to say:

Silke Endress: Dr. Hairston, Why Did You Get Into Ministry?

Teresa Hairston: I got into Ministry to answer the call of God on my life. I wanted to inspire,

empower, inform, and educate people with the mission of my life. God showed me 30 years

ago, that music, writing, and ministry, was going to be a part of my life. Ministry is where I was assigned, my life the things I do, is a result of my choice to be obedient to God.

SE: Who Were You Prior To Being The Successful Woman You Are Today?

TH: I was the person that was molded and shaped by a lot of experiences, not necessarily

grounded in the knowledge of who God is and His ways. The bible tells us that when a man ways please God, He will make even your enemies your footstool.

What happens is that we choose ways that don’t please God and wonder why we have so

many challenges. Our biggest enemy is Satan, if we understand that our ways can please God, and when we honor God in our ways, He will bring the enemy under subjection to us. It just

makes all the sense in the world that you would follow the things of God and do it His way, that’s the aftermath of coming into the knowledge. Before that knowledge, the way of the world,

were the ways of my life prior to coming to know Christ.

SE: Were You Already Into Publishing?

TH: The publishing thing is a gift from God, prior to that I was in the music industry, and education, closely aligned with what I do now, but wasn’t necessarily the same vocation.

SE: What Was Your AHA Moment?

TH: When I perceived the vision of my life, several years ago, the story was kind of interesting. I

was attending a Amway meeting, didn’t know it before I went, they used to just tell you come for a gathering with friends, and have food, talk…they set up all these products. This guy was

making a presentation and during his presentation he asked, “God forbid, if you were to die tomorrow, what legacy would you leave, what would be the most important thing people would

say about you?” I said wow, I don’t know what to say to that...so as he walked around, he came to me, and I said, “Well, I would like to write a book or write something that would really

impress people that would be left for generations.” That became the first oration of my goal. That vision in my life was not even realized or worked out until several years later.

SE: What Was Your Journey Like?

TH: The journey was filled with challenges, calculated risk, building my faith, having patience to

believe God, learning to trust God, learning to prove Him and that His word is true. So the journey was a spiritual journey. Entrepreneurs need to know that pass the natural things you can

do, the spiritual things are necessary. The journey of understanding who God is, who you are in Him, understanding His principles, His love, and that faith work, is not negotiable. Patience really

sustains you, humility is the under penning that undergird your life and most important to your character. Those are the things I learned, I learned how to have courage, how to continue to

believe God, how to continue to trust God, that was the journey. The bible says, seek, first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all other things will be added. Learning to believe

the Word, try the Word, walk the Word, talk the Word, live the Work, and think the Word.

SE: How has your magazine affected change in the lives of your readers?

TH: We received letters from people all the time that are encouraged and inspired by what we print. Gospel Today is a lifestyle, we talk about everything from fashion, to fitness, health, how to

raise your kids, conduct relationships, how you date, how you interface with your husband, and your wife. People need to know, being a person of faith is a lifestyle.

There is very little out there in the mainstream media that inspire people to live a more quality life.

We talk about how to eat right, how to exercise, but really how do you tie all that together. The hierarchy of who we are comes from how we think. So when you influence peoples thought

patterns that’s when you deal with how they live. If I think I want to be thin, I can eat right, but then I could be smoking or drinking or having sex, if that’s what I’m doing then it doesn’t matter

how I eat because I’m still killing myself on another aspect of my life, it’s holistic and that’s where Gospel Today have carved out a niche and thank God a lot of people have recognized and

appreciate that.

SE: Tell us about the birth of Gospel Today.

TH: It came out of a very devastating personal relationship. I went through some tough places in my life. What I found out, was the only way I could really be restored, was to come back into a

relationship with God, I found my way back through worship, coming back to a place of prayer, praise, and practicing the things of God in my life. When I came to that place through worship, I

began to be emotionally healed, my spirit got back into the right place. When I got there I said, ‘WOW how many people are missing the peace of God, the joy of God, and the joy of living.’

The pursuit of your purpose, how do you do that outside of the understanding of who God is and what He called you to do? Who you are and what you think of yourself, and the value you put

on yourself can only be realized through understanding God. And so, in your relationship with Him you got to understand how to get to God. A friend of mine, Judy McAllister said, “Praise is

the vehicle to get to the place of worship. You get on the ride of praise and you get to the destination of worship“.

Worship is where God lives, where God dwells, and understanding where God dwells in His presence there is fullness of joy and His right hand are pleasures for evermore. That’s where we

want to live, where there is pleasure, there is fullness and fulfillment. We got to establish our lives as places of worship, as activities of worship, in knowing that I said let me try to do this and help

other people get there too. That’s how the conference came about. We are finding that Pastors are seeing the conference change their church when they acknowledge and prioritize

worship. You have to have a personal relationship, it transcends you, bubbles over in your space, your environment, your calling, and your vocation, it changes us as a people, and it

changes our world, why, because we understand who we are and what we are called to do.

SE: Tell us about The Gospel Heritage Praise & Worship Conference.

TH: It is going to be a phenomenal two days

and people are carving out those two days in their schedule, not because they want to go to

another conference, but because they want a true experience with God. That’s what we

treasure about the two day gathering beginning on Thursday, February 18-19, 2010 in

Jacksonville, FL at Bethel Baptist Church. We are going to open it up with Bishop Rudolph

McKissick Jr., host Pastor, that night we have Bishop Noel Jones, Friday Kirk Franklin, and

closing night we have a big concert and are going salute 21 years of Gospel Today with

Bishop Paul Morton, Jonathan Nelson, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, and others. Tickets can be

purchased online www.GospelHeritage.org or by calling 770-719-4825.

SE: Please lend us your “Jewels of Wisdom.”

TH: Romans 8:28 all things work together for God. Of course we know that we are called, shaped and uniquely made and formed according to God’s purpose and plans for our life. He

had a plan when He created us. We have to find out what that is, by subjecting our mind, body, spirit, and soul to the will of God. The more we understand the Word and how to apply that in

our lives, the more we are able to accomplish the purpose of God in our lives.

Know that everything that you have gone through, the good, the bad, horrible, set back,

divorce, the job layoff, unemployment, all have a purpose, it’s up to you to understand what that purpose is and to go to God to say show me this, be humble enough to say here are the

mistakes I’ve made and here’s the lessen I’ve learned. Even the mistakes we made God will turn them around and use it as a blessing.

We have to understand that all we went through this for a purpose that we can use to fulfill the plan of God in our lives.

What is your favorite quote?

TH: Where God gives vision He makes provision.

During a typical day, your blood pressure goes up and down, and that's healthy. For about 65 million Americans,

however, blood pressure remains high over time. Are you one of them? When you have high blood pressure, your

heart has to work too hard. That can lead to heart disease and stroke. You're also at greater risk for type 2

diabetes. In fact, one recent study suggests that you're three times as likely to develop type 2 diabetes if you

have high blood pressure.

Now for some good news: most people can prevent or control high blood pressure by making lifestyle changes.

And every little bit helps. "Although you can't do anything about your family history or your age, you have the

power to change most of the risk factors for high blood pressure," says James Galloway, MD, a cardiologist and

Assistant Surgeon General with the U.S. Public Health Service. "Start by making small changes toward healthier

eating, increasing your physical activity and weight control and over time you'll see your blood pressure go down

and your health improve."

Here are six tips to help:

1. Try the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan.

2. Go low-sodium. Start by seasoning with pepper or herbs instead.

3. Stay active. When you exercise, you make your heart more efficient and that lowers your blood pressure.

4. Drop a few pounds. The heavier you are, the harder your heart works, and the higher your blood pressure.

5. Quit smoking. Cigarettes raise your blood pressure in at least three ways

6. Consider blood-pressure medication. Talk with your doctor about which medication might be right for you.

To learn more about how managing your blood pressure can lower your risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease,

call the American Diabetes Association at 1-800-DIABETES (342-2383), e-mail [email protected] or visit

www.CheckUpAmerica.org. Be sure to ask for your copy of "What You Need to Know: Managing High Blood

Pressure."

hen Natalie Cole’s seminal

Unforgettable... With Love

came out in 1991; the jazz

collection set a new standard

for reinventing the Great

American Songbook. The CD,

which captured six Grammys®, including Album and

Record Of The Year, spent five weeks at No. 1 and

sold more than eight million copies in the U.S. alone.

Still Unforgettable proves to be more than worth the

wait: A co-venture between Natalie, DMI Music, and

Rhino/WEA, Cole lovingly wraps her unparalleled

supple voice around 14 standards. On this, her 21st

studio album, Cole also takes the reins as producer for

the first time.

"Timing is everything, and I wasn't in a hurry to make

this kind of a record right away," Cole says.

"Something about now just seemed the right time. There is never a guarantee of success when you are

ready to put out a record—especially one like this. You have to go with your gut, but I didn't want to be

shamelessly chasing after the success of Unforgettable…With Love, so I waited."

Just as she lovingly partnered with her late father, the legendary Nat King Cole, for a posthumous duet

on the title track on the 1991 masterpiece, this time they reunite on the delightful "Walkin' My Baby

Back Home," first recorded by Cole's father in the early ‘50s.

Still Unforgettable combines much-beloved classics like "The Best is Yet To Come," "Come Rain or Come

Shine," "Nice ‘N' Easy" with great songs that Cole discovered for the first time, such as "Coffee Time," a

recommendation from Tony Bennett. "Every single one of these songs was a challenge to sing because

the original performances are so iconic. It was difficult to find a way to approach each one without losing

the essence of what makes them so great," Cole says.

"It is a bit of an art to pick the songs and then ‘marry' them with the right arranger," says Cole. She and

Deadrick "sat for hours and talked through each song and why it would work according to the

personality and style of the individual arranger. Then we sat down with each arranger and talked the

songs through again [and] what I wanted to accomplish, even down to specifics on whether to modulate

a key or how the song should start."

The songs on Still Unforgettable "go deeper into the treasure chest of great American songwriting, with

lyrics and melodies that touch you and soothe you, appealing to your intellectual side, but most of all,

appealing to your heart."

CCCCHOOSE HOOSE HOOSE HOOSE LLLLIFEIFEIFEIFE By: Pastor Ruth Chironna

e are living in a time and season when it is easy to feel pressed

in from every side. Many of us find ourselves facing financial stresses that we have not felt in a very long time. Our jobs are not as secure as we once felt they were. Some of us have

already lost our jobs and are finding out that it is not as easy to gain employment as it used to be. We also find that these

stresses affect our home life. We’re not as patient with our loved ones as we once were, and we often wonder where our joy went. Then, we catch ourselves having frequent thoughts

of, “Will it always be like this?” or “When will this season end?” Then, we find ourselves asking, “Father God, where are You in

all of this? Have You forgotten about me?” Well, I have good news for you! God is still in control!

He’s still on the throne! And, He has never left us or forsaken us!

Indeed, the children of Israel found themselves

wondering, after 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, if God was indeed going to bring deliverance to them and bring them into the

Promised Land. As they were about to cross over into the Promise Land, God laid out for His children, His

Covenant and the blessings and cursing. In Deuteronomy 30:15 and 19, God instructs:

“See, I have set before you today life and prosperity,

and death and adversity…So choose life in order that

you may live…”

Now, that sounds so easy to say, but how do we walk that out in the face of seeming death all around us? The first thing that we need to realize is that choosing life is a choice of our will and it’s a

daily choice. The word says, “…I have set before you today…” We have to make choosing life a daily practice because death will also be set before us as well.

We need then to ask the question, “If I am to choose life, what does that look like, feel like, and how

am I to walk that out?” If we continue to read in Deuteronomy 30:20, we find the key. The answer is three-fold.

“By loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice and by holding fast to Him.”

The first part of choosing life is, “loving the Lord your God.” In Matthew 22:37 it reads, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” The heart is the seat of our feelings or emotions. The soul is the seat of our will and the mind is the seat of our

understanding or intellect. So, in other words, with every part of our being – emotions will intellect – we must love the Lord.

e must be first and foremost in our

affections, our choices, and our

thinking. When all those areas are

surrendered in love to Him, we will

find ourselves choosing life.

The second part of choosing life is, “by obeying His

voice.” The Word says, “My sheep know my voice.”

So, therefore, we need to really learn how to listen

to His voice. In other words, take are what you’re

listening to. Do we spend most of our day listening

to our inner voice of doubt, fear, and unbelief? Or

do we listen to the negative input from those

around us? Or, are we listening to the voice of the

accuser? We need to train our ear to listen to the

voice of the Lord, which brings love, faith, power,

deliverance, and assurance. When we listen to His

voice and obey Him, it will positively affect our

internal state of being and we’ll find our words will

be full of life and our actions will be full of life.

The third part of choosing life is to “hold fast to

Him.” That word hold fast or cleave (KJV) in the

Hebrew means to follow close or hard after; to be

joined together or stick to. In other words, when we

are choosing life on a daily basis, we are still going

to find ourselves facing situations where all we can

do is hang on tight to Him until the storm has

passed.

We can find peace, joy, comfort, and life in the midst of the storm!

So, beloved, wherever you find yourself in this season, know that you have the option of being fully alive by

learning how to daily choose life.

“See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity…choose life…”

o one is left without feeling the affects of the current economy. Start building your financial security by following the five basic steps below.

1. Begin an emergency cash fund -- Create a savings account and resolve to pay yourself first by setting aside 5 to 10 percent of your salary each month. 2. Pay down your credit cards -- Credit card debt is the No. 1 obstacle to a secure financial future, and knowing your credit score is essential. Check it once a year. 3. Create a financial plan using life insurance as the foundation -- An insufficient life insurance plan can expose your family to significant financial risks. To learn more about life insurance, call (866) 331-3078 and speak with a life insurance specialist with SBLI USA, a company that specializes in life insurance policies. Or, go to www.sbliusa.com to get a free, no-obligation quote. 4. Empower yourself by creating a budget -- Be prudent with your spending. Write down everything you spend each month and cut back on non-essentials. 5. Optimize your retirement plan -- Take advantage of 401(k) deferred income tax benefits; you could be missing out on free money. If your work doesn't allow you to participate in a 401(k), consider opening up an IRA; or perhaps both.

Kitchen kids' favorite ingredient: Wisconsin cheese

Learning to cook is not only a terrific way to express creativity, share ideas and spend time

with family and friends, cooking is also an excellent way for children to explore important

life-building skills such as how to prepare meals, use math to measure ingredients and discover

healthy eating habits.

* Three-year-olds can help wash fruits and vegetables, stir ingredients in a bowl, tear

lettuce, and pour liquids.

* Four-year-olds can grease pans, peel oranges, and open packages.

* Five-year-olds can measure ingredients, cut

soft foods with a blunt knife, set the table, and make a plate of food look pretty.

* Seven- and 8-year-olds can help plan the

meal, roll and shape cookies, beat ingredients with a whisk, find ingredients in a cabinet or

spice rack and make a salad.

* Nine- to 12-year-olds can open cans, prepare simple recipes with a limited number of

ingredients, use an oven (with supervision), use a knife (with supervision) and shred cheese and

vegetables.

These tips, new recipes, and educational information about cheese are all offered in a

new brochure, Kitchen Kids, authored by the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board.

o matter what part of the country you live in, the winter months can be

downright abusive on your home. From frozen Minnesotans dropping heaps of

water-logged clothing on the floor after digging out of five feet of snow, to

tanned Floridians grinding gritty sand into their carpeting, every home takes a

beating in the winter.

As harsh as we can be on our most expensive investment, a variety of easy and inexpensive

precautions can greatly diminish the amount of winter wear and tear imposed on our homes.

Baseboards that say "bring it on"Baseboards that say "bring it on"Baseboards that say "bring it on"Baseboards that say "bring it on"

Baseboards are often overlooked until they are so dirty and worn that they stand out like

a sore thumb. By design, baseboards are

meant to preserve the lower portion of

walls and withstand normal bumps and

scuffs. However, choosing an appropriate

paint for these baseboards can make all the

difference when it comes to durability.

Paints designed especially for heavy

traffic and easy cleaning are best for

baseboards. One paint manufacturer, Pratt,

Lambert, actually offers a line of paint

called Porcelain, which contains tiny

porcelain particles that bond together in

such a way that stains cannot penetrate the

surface of the paint. And, because of the

paint's strength, if dirt or spills do

splash the surface, you can scrub the paint

without damaging the finish.

Kitchen consideration

You might not think of it at first, but

kitchens take quite a beating during the

winter months. As the central point of

congregation for holiday parties, dinners

and simple evenings at home, kitchens see

quite a bit of traffic during the winter.

Because of the increased use, kitchen

cabinets endure a lot more bumps during the

winter, but cabinet finishes can be spared with a few easy solutions. First, if your

cabinets are not painted, apply a varnish that will act as a barrier against scuffing. If

they are painted, reapply the color in a paint that is meant to withstand heavy traffic.

A quality Purdy brush is critical to a flawless finish.

Any local hardware store should stock corner protectors. The edges of your kitchen

cabinetry or islands often take the brunt of the damage because you have to maneuver

around them. Wood or plastic corner protectors will help diminish this damage and can, if

you like, be removed at the end of the winter.

These simple tips will protect some of your home's most frequently damaged areas, and help

ensure a lasting durability. Courtesy of ARAcontent

inter weather can cause

many private homeowners to

wonder how they can pay

their utility bill with

tighter budgets. What many

people do not realize is

there are cost-effective

ways of upgrading a home

for the winter, which can save money in

the long run.

Gina Carlson, the Academic Director for

the Interior Design program at The Art

Institutes International Minnesota, offers

these helpful and low-cost tips:

♦ Close off any unused areas of the home.

♦ Keep the home at a lower temperature

and use a blanket or a space heater.

♦ Check the weather-stripping around the

doors and windows.

♦ Use shade trees to cool the house from

the summer sun and making the most use

of large south facing windows to

capture the winter sun.

♦ Add humidifiers to make the air feel

warmer in the winter, and to make a

room feel cooler in the summertime use dehumidifiers.

Making improvements to the home will eventually save money and cut the costs of wasted

electricity. In 2009, the government began offering income tax to homeowners who make

qualified improvements or changes between Jan. 1, 2009, and Dec. 31, 2010. For more

information about the income tax incentives, visit www.energystar.gov
