SIKA INNOVATIONS ON THE ROADSome Recent Highlights: Enabling Lightweight Engineering and Mixed-Material Bonding
2014 RANGE ROVER SPORTSikaPower® Crash-Durable AdhesiveThe 2014 Range Rover Sport is the first practical mass-produced all-aluminum bodied vehicle. By using aluminum instead of steel, Jaguar Land Rover was able to reduce vehicle weight by over 420 kg. Because aluminum is not a metal that can be easily welded, SikaPower® structural crash adhesive was developed to join this aluminum body. Over 160 meters of SikaPower® adhesive was used in the assembly of each vehicle.

2014 BMW i-3Sikaflex® Ultra High Modulus (UHM) AdhesiveSikaflex®Ultra-High Modulus Adhesive (UHM) for mixed material bonding was first used on the revolutionary and highly successful 2014 BMW i-3 and i-8 vehicles; it provides semi-structural elastic bonding of various lightweight materials and mixed structures in body construction. On the BMW i-3, it is used to bond the carbon fiber reinforced plastic Life Module to the aluminum Drive Module. Sika received a 2015 PACE award for the product and application, and received a PACE award for the project collaboration with BMW.
2017 BMW 7 SERIESSikaPower® Crash-Durable AdhesiveThe 2017 BMW 7-series employed a mixture of aluminum, steel and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) to reduce weight while at the same time increase vehicle stability. The total body-in-white weight reduction is 50 kg and innovative SikaPower® crash durable adhesive technology was used to strategically bond these mixed material components. The SikaPower® solution was designed to address the issue of different coefficients of thermal expansion in different material substrates; with its optimal balance of modulus, elongation and strength, using SikaPower® can prevent failure from residual tension during the entire vehicle service life.
