SHRITEQ 2016 ISSUE III Saturday, 22nd October, 2016. We began day two of ShriTeq 2016 with optimism and excitement. This year’s ShriTeq was more ambitious and impressive than ever, and another feather in the Shri cap. On Thursday, we had junior events held, while today the senior events took place in venues all over the school. Students enthusiastically darted from corner to corner of the campus all day. Comic Strip, Product Design and Hackathon competitions were held and a Teq Quiz hosted by Mr. Rajiv Makhni had everyone on the edge of their seats. The results of the competitions were announced at the end of the day, with The Shri Ram School Moulsari winning the entire event. All in all, the two hectic days were an enjoyable and educational experience. While ShriTeq 2016 has come to a close, we hope that next year’s chapter will be an even better one! At the conclusion of another wildly successful ShriTeq, we are reminded of the humble beginnings of this experience. As said by Raghav Sood, school alumnus and co-founder of ShriTeq, “It’s great to see how much it’s grown, from a little interschool quiz to such a huge competition”. Let us commemorate the close of another great event by participating in our very own quiz. 1. What’s the full form of V-SYNC? 2. What is the pseudonym of the creator of Minecraft? 3. SHRITEQ 2016

ISSUE III

Saturday, 22nd October, 2016.

3. Answers: 1. Vertical synchronization, 2. Notch, 3. GLaDOS, 4. Pangolin, 5, Basic Input/Output System, 6. Python, 7. 0/false or 1/True, 8. Matroska, 9. Musical Instrument Digital Interface, 10. 125

On the second day of the ShriTeq Hackathon, excitement prevailed as the teams found their way back to their seats and began working on the apps and websites they had created for the theme of “Next generation mobile products that inspire users to travel, discover new avenues and solve problems by supporting them in planning and booking journeys.”

Team members appeared sleepy, and when asked the reason for this they explained that they had been working on their ideas all night. Many schools appeared to have started afresh during the course of the night. The various schools came up with ideas ranging from artificial intelligence based chatbots to websites offering virtual reality experiences in order to help users understand every aspect of the place before travelling there. Soft music played in the background as the teams busily typed away on their laptops, some even turning down questions from members of the Editorial Board in order to fully focus on optimising their prototypes. Mr. Ramit Goyal, Mr. Raghav Sood and Mr. Arnav Gupta judged the work of each team, and after a strict

screening of every aspect Mother’s International School emerged victorious, followed by Amity, Saket in second place and The Shri Ram School, Moulsari, in third.

The Product Design of ShriTeq '16 saw eight teams compete, over the theme of "Sustainable Development". Several potential investment opportunities were presented, most with well thought out go-to-market strategies and business burndown charts. The participants were very competent, and with the judges being attentive and experienced, it made for an invigorating back and forth. The products included ideas like thermal sinks to improve energy production efficiency, a house made of recycled plastic bottles, dynamos to create cheap electricity in rural areas, futuristic fire suppression systems, and several other innovative ideas. The participants and audience also asked questions, which made for a refreshing change of pace, providing a point of view differing from that of the judges. The event concluded after an hour and a half of well executed presentations and an in-depth interaction with the judges. The Shri Ram School, Moulsari received first place, with the Delhi Public School, RK Puram and Springdales School coming in as first and second runner ups, respectively.

We had the privilege of attending a discussion with Mr. Kunal Bahl, the CEO and co-founder of SnapDeal and the discussion was hosted by Mr. Rajiv Makhni. Mr. Bahl managed to gain full attention of the entire auditorium for those thirty minutes. Our esteemed keynote speaker gave us some priceless advice on following our dreams. He referred to his personal experiences in the past that made him the man he is today. Mr. Bahl spoke about the times when he failed to get into the Indian Institute of Technology and the times when his mother did not understand his job, leaving her worried about his future. However, through all hardships of life, he managed to reach the heights of success and today his start-up company is one of the most successful online buying and selling mediums in the country.

The 'Create a Comic Strip' competition was conducted for the first time ever and we were excited to see ten extremely talented teams participate. Each team consisted of two participants from classes ten to twelve who were given the topic of ‘Cyber Safety’. An intense two and a half hours of deliberate, painstaking work resulted in pieces of delightfully creative artwork. The contestants were judged on the following parameters: originality, storyline, creativity, relevance and, artistic skills. We were honoured to welcome two highly experienced judges, Ms. Tina Rajan and Ms. Manisha Gera Baswani. The third prize was given to The Indian School, the second prize to The Shri Ram School, Moulsari and the winners were The Tagore International School.

The Senior Teq Quiz is one of the most highly anticipated events of ShriTeq. The semi-final round of the quiz was commenced with vigour and excitement. Participants from twelve schools competed for one of six positions in the final round. It entailed four exciting rounds, each of which were characterized by a different method of asking questions. The first round was the All Play Round, in which each team was given the chance to attempt every question. There was also a round where audio-visual clues were used. The last round was the buzzer round, one of the most thrilling aspects of the quiz. The quiz was conducted by Mr. Rajiv Makhni, who instantly connected with the audience with his humour and sharp wit. Finally, after a close competition, the six teams that qualified for the final round were DPS RK Puram, TSRS Moulsari, DPS Rohini, DPS Noida, Vasant Valley and Rukmini Devi Public School. The Teq Quiz finals commenced later that day with Mr. Rajiv Makhni opening the quiz with audience questions and had the students literally jumping out of their seats to answer. The first round of questions each team wrote down their answers on a piece of paper. The first four questions were relatively easy and each team received ten points for each of their correct answers. The questions were based on the name of startups, identifying headquarters and even names of superheroes like Antman. The teams then got to choose categories and how many points they wanted to allocate to each question. After this, the teams were told to pick five correct answers out of ten. TSRS Moulsari got an additional twenty points for guessing six out of the ten instead of five. The questions were then opened to the audience and four excited winners were given Fitbits. Ultimately, The DPS Rohini team won the quiz, performing remarkably well, answering questions even before they had been fully read out. DPS Noida was the came second, followed by TSRS Moulsari.
