As I introduce myself to the Count Basie Theatre community, I am filled with optimism about the future of this wonderful and vibrant venue. It has been just a few weeks since accepting the position of CEO of Count Basie Theatre and Foundation, yet I have a strong sense of the great things that have been accomplished over the years and the work that still lies ahead.

One of my first experiences as CEO of the Basie was attending the New Jersey State Council on the Arts annual grants meeting in Trenton. I was thrilled to learn that arts funding had not been cut and that we were once again awarded a general operating grant of $178,815. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, this funding makes it possible for us to present cultural programming such as modern dance, ballet, opera and jazz; events that otherwise might not be possible.

This spring we realized a major accomplishment for our Performing Arts Academy through its acceptance into Washington D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center’s Partners in Education; a program that is designed to assist arts organizations throughout the nation to develop or expand educational partnerships with their local school systems. The purpose of these partnerships in the arts is to promote the professional learning of teachers. Our acceptance into the Kennedy Center’s Partnership in Education Program signals that something very important for the community is happening right here at the Basie that will expand and enhance our outreach program into area schools.

This June also saw the completion of the Basie patio “The Count’s Courtyard.” The beautifully landscaped new space serves as an outdoor gathering place for our patrons to enjoy themselves before and after a show. Our “opening night” for the patio, and for me as the new CEO, was on June 29 at the Count Basie Theatre’s Summer Soirée gala, where the entire patio was alive with music, food, friends, and fundraising. The hard work of our gala committee and our professional staff was evident as the party, in conjunction with the Crosby, Stills and Nash concert, raised over $350,000 for the theatre.

To say that I am eager to roll up my sleeves and continue the hard work that will propel this organization to an even greater level is an understatement. The heart and soul of the Count Basie Theatre is its dedicated boards and staff, community partners, members, patrons and supporters. I am proud and honored to be here as the new face and voice of the Basie and I look forward to getting to know you.

Note from Justine RobertsonNew CEO, Count Basie Theatre & Foundation

Actor Hugh Laurie, the Emmy Award nominated, Golden Globe Award winning star of the TV series House visits the Basie in support of his debut musical release, Let Them Talk. A musical celebration of New Orleans, with Laurie leading the band on piano and vocals.

The album features American classics like “St. James Infirmary,” “Swanee River,” “John Henry,” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So.” Says Laurie, “I’ve broken a cardinal rule of art…actors are supposed to act, and musicians are supposed to music…(but) the blues have made me laugh, weep, dance…this is a family record.”

The Wall Street Journal said, “From its opening bars, the music proves the disc isn’t a vanity project or another role…he’s been playing piano since he was 6.”

Millions of fans know Darius Rucker as the voice of Hootie & The Blowfish, the Grammy-winning band whose album Cracked Rear View sold more than 16 million copies and included the Top 10 hits “Hold My Hand,” “Let Her Cry,” “Only Wanna Be with You” and “Time.”

Millions more now know him as a critically and commercially acclaimed country artist, whose album Learn To Live went to #1 and included not one but three #1 hit singles, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” “It Won’t Be Like This For Long,” and “Alright.”

The New York Times called it, “one of the year’s most vibrant country albums,” and Variety declared, “Country music has a new major star, and the genre may never be the same.” His latest release is the 2010 album Charleston, SC, 1966.

On July 29, 1925 the Red Bank Register reported that Joseph Oschwald of Little Silver announced plans to build a Theatre on Monmouth Street for a partnershipof Joseph Stern of Newark, the Burns and Schaffer Amusement Co. and Walter Reade, then New Jersey’s largest theatre owner. The property and the rights of way forthe land were purchased for $21,000, the projected construction cost was roughly $300,000. Ground was broken on December 9, 1925 and the Theatre opened on Armistice Day, November 11, 1926. Opening night was a grand affair, headlined by a vaudeville performer, the feature fi lm “The Quarterback,” starring Richard Dix, Carlton’s News Events and a ten piece orchestra. That summer and fall, the plan was to use the Theater to try out musical comedies and other shows to be produced in New York. Admission would never be more than 75 cents for movies and vaudeville shows.

First known as the State Theatre (the initials “ST” are still inscribed on the peak of the building’s façade). The Theatre’s name was changed twice, fi rst to the Red Bank Theatre and then to the name it operated under for over four decades, the Carlton Theatre.

The Red Bank Register reported that the new Carlton Theatre, “…is a marvel of beauty, convenience and comfort. Outside and inside it is an architectural triumph. Color and light are two of the outstanding features of the new building. Thousands of electric lights stud the ceilings and sidewalls. In the center of the building is an enormous dome-like sunburst illuminated with a myriad of concealed lights. A very large glass chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. The interior of the Theatre is rich with colors harmoniously blended. The furnishing are rich in velours and velvets in contrasting shades.” A grandly painted vaudeville curtain, still in use today, fi lled the proscenium arch.

The Theatre was privately owned and operated for almost 50 years, until 1973, when an anonymous donation made it possible for the Monmouth County Arts Council to acquire the building for just $96,665 and preserve it for cultural uses. It operated as the Monmouth Arts Center until 1984, when it was renamed in honor of jazz pianist, composer, band leader and Red Bank native William “Count” Basie (1904-1984). On June 30, 1999, the Count Basie Theatre, Inc. was established as an independent nonprofi t corporation to maintain owner-ship and manage, program and preserve the Theatre for the benefi t of the community.

In 2004, the fi rst of a 12-phase, $21.5 million renovation began with the purchase and installation of brand new historically accurate Theatre seats. In 2008, the auditorium, lobbies and Carlton Lounge were renovated and restored. In 2011, the façade and marquee were restored and the Theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Total expenditures on capital improvements have totaled $12 million to date.

Although the current schedule is composed of “live” music, dance, theatre and arts education performances, much remains the same about the building. Almost 200,000 people a year attend events at the Count Basie Theatre. In an age when we communicate and entertain ourselves through mediums that its founders could not have even imagined, their Theatre is still the place where people go when they want to be entertained and enlightened in the company of their neighbors.

A more expansive telling of the Count Basie Theatre’s history is available atwww.countbasietheatre.org.

The RBJO, a professional 17-piece jazz band directed by internationally known conductor Joe Muccioli, is joined by a guest vocalist, and special guest soloist Wycliffe Gordon. Named Trombonist of the Year seven times by the Jazz Journalists Association, he has performed at the Grammy Awards, on PBS, BET and NPR, and is a Manhattan School of Music faculty member. The latest of his 14 releases is Hello Pops, a Tribute to Louie Armstrong (2011).

With swinging arrangements of classic, straight ahead jazz, each RBJO concert is a soulful journey through jazz history, from its New Orleans roots through Swing, Bop and beyond. Joined by a guest vocalist, this very special concert features an all-Gershwin program, with the second half devoted to a recreation of Miles Davis’ classic recording of Porgy and Bess, starring special guest soloist Jon Faddis, called “The world’s greatest trumpeter” by Time Out New York Magazine.

Based on Richard Scarry’s children’s books (300 books, 150 million copies sold), and the Saturday morning CBS-TV adaptation Busytown Mysteries, Busytown Busy follows the adventures of Huckle Cat, Sally Cat, Lowly Worm, Sergeant Murphy and many of their unforgettable friends as they prepare to compete in the Busytown talent contest! Together, the friends attempt to discover their true talents, with lots of laughter, and a few hiccups, along the way!

Based on the New York Times best-selling children’s picture books Pinkalicious and Purplicious, by sisters Elizabeth and Victoria Kann, Pinkalicious, The Musical tells the story of Pinkalicious, who can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor’s office with Pinkititis, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe. It’s a dream come true for this pink loving enthusiast, until her hue goes too far.

About the Operations of the Count Basie TheatreThe Count Basie Theatre, Inc. is a nonprofi t corporation organized under section501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The designation indicates that thecorporation’s purpose is to provide a community service. It can accept tax deductibledonations and all funds it generates must remain within the corporation to pay regular operating costs or to be reinvested in new programming or capital improvements. Any surplus funds cannot be retained by an individual or other entity. There are no owners or shareholders. The organization holds its assets in trust for the community.

The Count Basie Theatre, Inc. is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised ofcivic and community leaders, who volunteer their time and receive no compensationfor their efforts. Operations are conducted by a paid professional staff according to the policies and direction established by the Board, in the By Laws and the Mission Statement of the organization. The results of the corporation’s operations are a matter of public record and copies of its annual fi nancial fi lings with the state and federal government are available either from the organization itself or from the appropriate government agency.

The Count Basie Theatre Foundation, Inc. is the Theatre’s fundraising arm. Also a501(c)(3) nonprofi t organization, the Foundation was created to provide operatingsupport to the Theatre, raise the capital needed to restore the Theatre and to create an endowment. The Foundation oversees Membership, Major Gifts, Benefi t Concerts, Corporate Sponsorships and Special Events. Please see the Count Basie Theatre’s website for specifi c details at www.countbasietheatre.org, click CBT Foundation or call Tiffany C. McDermott at the Foundation’s Offi ce 732.224.8778 x115.

The mission of the Count Basie Theatre is to serve the people of the State of NewJersey by providing a broad spectrum of quality entertainment and education programs that refl ect and celebrate the diversity of the region, foster understandingand appreciation for the ennobling power of the performing arts and create opportunity for cultural enrichment for people at all economic levels. It also is our mission to develop and maintain a world-class venue that enhances the enjoyment of this entertainment and education programs, contributes to the cultural and economic vitality of the community and the region, and honors the memory of Count Basie.

Each year the Theatre hosts approximately 200 public events, attended by about200,000 people. Many of these events are presented or produced by other organiza-tions renting the Theatre; the others the Theatre presents itself. In the case of a Theatre rental production, the Theatre earns a rental fee and is reimbursed for its other costs. The producer assumes the cost of engaging the artist and staging the event, establishes the ticket prices and receives the income. In the case of an event presented by the Count Basie Theatre, the Theatre has determined that it is in the community’s interest to present a particular program or artist and the Theatre takes the fi nancial risk. If there is a surplus after costs have been covered, the Theatre retains the funds. If there is a loss, the Theatre must cover it from other sources, including membership contributions. Consistent with itsmission, the Theatre’s own programming focuses on those programs which would otherwise not be available in this community.

The Presidential election cycle is here, and so is the annual Basie appearance by the only group in America trying to be funnier than Congress: The Capitol Steps! The mob that puts the mock in democracy, Capitol Steps are a musical sketch comedy troupe of current and former Congressional staffers. Taking a humorous look at serious issues, they use personalities on Capitol Hill, in the Oval Office and worldwide to supply the fodder for a nationwide laugh at our own political system. Their bi-partisan shows are as up to date as the news cycle, a potent mix of musical theatre and dramatic satire that provides, “Laughs to the Left, Laughs to the Right,” according to The New York Times. CNN’s Larry King said, “They’re the best,” and former President Bush said, “The Capitol Steps make it easier to leave public life.”

Variety says singer, songwriter and virtuoso of anything with strings on it, David Bromberg is, “a master with nothing left to prove to himself or to others,” and The NY Times calls him “electrifying.” A performance by the 12-piece David Bromberg Big Band traces its own musical path, from the blues and country to jazz and folk, with stops at Celtic and Appalachian music along the way.

Basie audiences in particular know his sold out concerts are one of the most musically satisfying events of the year. His 2009 Basie appearance was released as the DVD “In Concert at the Count Basie Theatre.” His most recent releases are the Grammy nominated Try Me One More (2007), and Use Me (2011). Five-time Grammy nominee Joe Jackson performs a concert of selections from his new album The Duke, a collection of songs made famous by Duke Ellington and rearranged in Joe’s unique style, along with his own classics.

Best known for the hits “Is She Really Going Out with Him?,” “I’m the Man,” “Steppin’ Out,” “Breaking Us in Two,” “It’s Different for Girls,” and “You Can’t Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want),” Joe’s body of work over a three decade career is eclectic and fiercely individual. He has written film scores, a symphony, and a book. The Duke is only his second album of non-original material, after 1981’s Jumpin’ Jive.
