New Year new prospects?New Year new prospects?New Year new prospects?New Year new prospects?

Welcome to the Christmas edition of Shouldham News. This year has seen

many positive developments in the village, not least the resurgence of the

Village Weekend, which took place to great acclaim at the end of June, and

the very popular Firework Extravaganza in November. But there have been

many other events, both large and small, that have been successfully run in the

village – almost all of them organised by volunteers with the aim of

benefitting the community and local or national charities.

There has been much talk in Parliament and in the press this year about the

‘Big Society’. Definitions of the term remain woolly, but in essence it seems

that politicians are keen for volunteers to take an increased role in helping

their local communities. The politicians’ motives for this may well be to save

money, but they also seem to be nostalgically pointing back to an age where

voluntary work was commonplace – an era that has long gone in much of the

country.

Thankfully in Shouldham there are still people who are willing to give up their

time for the good of the village. Such work takes many forms: serving on the

parish council, running the church, the Village Hall or the Bowls Club,

keeping Shouldham Football Club alive and kicking, the Good Companions on

their toes, or the Toddler Group toddling. Shouldham News wouldn’t be able

to survive without our designer, our ad manager, and the local group of

distributors who post it through all (we hope!) the letterboxes of Shouldham

and Shouldham Thorpe. There are doubtless other groups and societies not

mentioned here, but we all owe their members a great debt for their work.

Shouldham would not be the place it is without them.

New year new prospects? (Continued from page 1)

Sadly many in the village, afflicted by long hours at work, or needing to devote

most of their time to their families, aren’t able to commit any hours to

volunteering. There’s a danger that these people will lose touch with the village,

but fortunately they can do plenty of good for the community simply by turning

up to fundraising events and supporting the village institutions: the church, the

school, the Bowls Club, the Post Office, the pub.

At this time, the future of the King’s Arms is uncertain at best. It simply won’t

be able to survive unless more people from the village support it. To do one good

turn this festive season, go and raise a cup of Christmas cheer at our village pub

– you might even meet new friends.

Next year will be an exciting one for Shouldham, with the opening of a new farm

shop, bar and restaurant at the old school on The Green. Let’s hope all these

amenities flourish.

Finally, Shouldham News would like to wish everyone in Shouldham and

Shouldham Thorpe – as well as our growing band of former villagers who read

the newsletter online – a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Marie Curie Blooming Great Tea Party Shouldham News received this article in time for the Autumn edition, but due to the incompetence of the editor, it failed to appear. Many apologies to all concerned.

Jane, Cas and Jenny would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who made their ‘Blooming Great Tea Party’ on a sweltering afternoon in July such a wonderfully successful event. Special thanks must go to all the generous cake-makers and to Alan, Steve, John M, John D and Paul for their expert marquee erection and dismantling skills!

This year we raised a fantastic £425.51, which has been gratefully received by Marie Curie Cancer Care to help nurse terminally ill people.

Thank you all again and we look forward to seeing you on the Green next year! Cas Sawyer

Remembrance SundayRemembrance SundayRemembrance SundayRemembrance Sunday This year we were pleased to welcome, again, Anne Clarke for the

service inside church, followed by the Act of Remembrance around the

War Memorial. Anne opened by reading a poem, written by a former

soldier from Boughton who had served in the trenches; and then, in her

sermon, she stressed the need for us to recognise the newer enemy – global terrorism

– and so pray and strive for God’s eventual peace in the whole world.

We gratefully acknowledge the kind attendance of the very smart Royal Air Force

contingent from Marham, and Bill Wells who sounded the Last Post and Reveille.

The names were read by a Churchwarden, then wreaths were laid on behalf of the

RAF, the British Legion and the women’s section of the Legion.

The two minutes silence was duly observed and the bells were rung half-muffled, as

befits the solemnity of the occasion. Brian Hullah

In a custom that has become an established village ritual, there will once again be carol singing around the village Christmas tree on The Green. This year the event will take place on Wednesday 22nd December at 7pm. Everyone is welcome, and song sheets will be provided. Simply turn up with your voice (and perhaps a torch). A collection for charity will be made afterwards.

Carols around the Christmas Tree

Winter quizWinter quizWinter quizWinter quiz For the 13th year in succession, this event took place in the Village Hall on the evening of Saturday 13

th November. A

very good turnout tackled the variety of questions prepared by A&B Promotions Inc with all the usual determination, moans and cheers that accompany these evenings. The prizes ultimately went to Katie Lee’s table, worthy winners by a modest margin. Our thanks go to all who competed; helped with the scoring; gave raffle prizes; manned the door; folded/sold raffle tickets, etc, and so helped raise a most welcome £220 clear profit for church funds. CHALK & CHEESE UPDATECHALK & CHEESE UPDATECHALK & CHEESE UPDATECHALK & CHEESE UPDATE

Work continues apace at Wheelers School on the corner of The Green. The latest news is that the bar and restaurant of the ‘Chalk & Cheese’ will open in January 2011. A new pizza oven is currently being fabricated in Italy, and chef-owner Andrew Archibald is busy completing an artisan bread-making course in Cambridge. The farm shop, to be housed in the school’s outbuildings, is due to open in February. Three rooms for accommodation will also be available later in the year.

Andrew is keen to welcome anyone from the village who wants to pop round and see the work in progress. It’s certainly an impressive sight.

A new website is being planned to give news about Shouldham’s Village

Weekend, together with other social events in the village. Emma Gibson is

looking for photos taken during past events (including the fetes, sports events

and the annual bike ride) to put on the site. The website,

www.shouldhamvillageweekend.co.uk, will also include a page for

pre-booking tickets for the summer barbecue, and might also sell advertising

Multi sports in ShouldhamMulti sports in ShouldhamMulti sports in ShouldhamMulti sports in Shouldham Some of you may have seen a petition doing the rounds this summer for a multi-sports facility in Shouldham. The idea is to have a multi-use games area on the playing field, which could be used to play football, netball, basketball, badminton, tennis etc (some or all of the above). We have gathered about 250 signatures so far, and would like to gauge public support for this project before taking it further.

The Parish Council would therefore like to invite everyone to a public meeting on Monday 10th January at 8.30pm at the Eco-lab (St Martin’s School) to discuss this proposal.

We hope you will come and express your views on taking this forward. Look out for the posters around the village closer to the event. Pallavi Devulapalli
