SNAKE CHARMER

The palette of this rich burgundy bag by Jimmy

Choo is perfect for a winter wardrobe. Realised

in luxurious anaconda skin, the rippling texture

highlights the subtle pattern and the various

shades of red, purple and black. Famous for its

shoes, Jimmy Choo has recently gained just as

much attention for its handbags, and with good

reason. From pop art-inspired printed clutches

to furry shoulder bags that revel in mixed

materials, the brand excels when it comes to

experimentation – and, as a result, has caught

the eye of the fashion elite. We admire the

understated design of this bag; a simple clasp

and chain strap complement its clean shape,

allowing the exquisite materials and enticing

colour scheme to stand out all the more. hl

ARTHOUSE PRADA

After last season’s riot of colour, Prada’s autumn/winter 2014/15 collection is a more sombre afair. This season Miuccia Prada has taken inspiration from the flms of arthouse director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, which translates into a collection where clever layering, as well as contrasting proportions and textures, plays a key part. Oversized shearling-trimmed outerwear is juxtaposed with tightly wound neck scarves, body-skimming silk shifts and furry trimmed transparent slips. Art deco-inspired prints provide a welcome burst of colour and the slouchy, chevron-striped knits look set to be a cosy yet chic winter wardrobe staple. irsPrada,Königsallee 34A, 40212 Düsseldorf, +49 (0)211 865780, prada.com

SUITS YOU

The autumn/winter menswear collection from German fashion house Jil Sander remains true to the brand’s distinctive clean lines, sharp tailoring and minimalist aesthetics; high-sheen quilted fabrics in striking shades of deep plum and midnight blue provide slick options for winter suiting. Jacket designs cover a range of cuts and lengths, while slim-ft knitwear in place of shirting keeps the overall look modern, adding a relaxed and wearable edge to this elegant attire. Visitors to the store on Königsallee can also browse the label’s womenswear collection, which eschews the moody shades so often chosen for autumn/winter in favour of a palette of icy blues and the occasional pop of pastel pink or purple. Pastels for winter may not be a new idea, but in the pared-back and easy silhouette of Jil Sander they seem fresh and perfectly right for now. glJil Sander, Königsallee 62, 40212 Düsseldorf, +49 (0)211 328444, jilsander.com

Düsseldorf has long been associated with

impressive architecture and engaging culture,

but it is now being viewed in a new light, and

is becoming known as a place with a buzzy

vibe and eclectic mix of styles. Impressive

regeneration projects such as the MedienHafen

(Media Harbour) and RheinTurm by

Frank O Gehry and David Chipperfeld are

helping to redefne the city. ‘Although the

city is celebrating the 725th anniversary of

its founding, Düsseldorf’s real draws are to

be found in its dozens of new developments,’

journalist Evan Rail commented in the New

York Times, pointing out the city’s stylish

contemporary architecture, cutting-edge

restaurants and new takes on traditional beer.

‘It’s not really a beauty-on-every-corner

kind of place, but more of a hidden gems

kind of city,’ explains David Dorfmueller,

an American who started writing about

Düsseldorf when he moved there in 2013.

Among these ‘gems’ is Trödelmarkt Aachener

Platz, a weekly fea market in Bilk, full of bric-

a-brac, antiques and food stalls where visitors

can enjoy a bratwurst and a cup of cofee.

‘There’s something very German about going

to a market on Saturday,’ says Dorfmueller.

has been blurred. This modern-day curiosity

German national cuisine has always been rich

with variations and contrast, with each district

boasting its own specialities. Foods that are

shared by all regions, such as sauerkraut, are

prepared and cooked diferently throughout

the country, while the south-west is infuenced

by French cuisine. Even so, traditional German

cuisine is characterised by its heartiness, with

an emphasis on meat and potatoes, partly

because of Germany’s relatively northern

location. In recent years there has also been

a growing interest in organic food.

An international centre for business with

French-inspired fne dining in Michelin-starred

this diversity, Düsseldorf’s traditional cuisine

fare includes sauerbraten, a pickled roast beef

with stewed apples that is usually marinated

in vinegar and other spices before serving,

halver hahn, combining dark rye bread, cheese

and mustard, and fonz met olk, black pudding

There are few better ways to spend a cold

winter day than tucked up inside, admiring

world-class works of art. Düsseldorf’s

Kunstpalast is home to more than a few

masterpieces, from medieval sculpture to

contemporary photography, and the gallery

also regularly hosts an impressive range of

high-calibre temporary exhibitions. look

out for the Hentrich Glass Collection, which

is said to be the most comprehensive glass

collection in europe as well as an exhibit

by colour specialist Katharina Grosse.

44: Live Like A Local

Page 83: SHOP Dusseldorf AW14

玩店有着古董内饰、珠宝与壁纸以及复古风货架;

Unterhaltang

Lieblingsstücke,

Woyton

Altstad(

Brauerei Kuzer

Saxony

Nostalgischer Weihnachsmarkt

Renowned German glove maker Roeckl is

celebrating its 175th anniversary. Jakob Roeckl

opened his frst shop in Munich in 1839

and the brand gained a reputation at home

and abroad for the exceptional quality of its

materials and craftsmanship. The company

is now overseen by Annette Roeckl, a member

of the sixth generation of the family, and every

pair of gloves is still hand stitched. In recent

years, Roeckl has taken inspiration from

other countries and cultures, while this year

it looks back to its roots for the anniversary

collection, basing the colours, fabrics and crafts

on those which are native to Bavaria. These

women’s gloves, decorated with traditional

foral embroidery, are available in black

or brown. Made from sheep’s leather, they

feature a suede back and a soft nappa palm,

with a luxurious cashmere and lamb’s wool

lining to ensure warmth and comfort. gl
