FUTURE FASHION

With a mission to promote young

Spanish designers, Enfant Ter-

rible has created a space that is fun

and innovative. The idea is that

a local designer uses the store as

a platform in which to showcase

their work, whether for a day, a

week or a month, meaning that

Enfant Terrible’s ofering changes

frequently. Walk through the en-

trance, which is surrounded by a

fve-metre-high vertical garden,

and inside you can expect to fnd

anything from cocktail dresses

and fne jewellery to headwear

and soft furnishings. One thing is

certain, a trip to Enfant Terrible is

never boring. irs

As one of Spain’s leading chil-

SWISS STYLE

This season’s collection from

Bally pays homage to the Swiss

company’s chic heritage. The

women’s line contrasts masculine-

style tailoring with luxury fabrics

including cashmere, nappa leather

and soft suede. Separates, such as a

cashmere knee-length pencil skirt,

form the basis of a luxurious but

understated wardrobe. Look out

for the Gentlewoman bag: based

on the style of a Bally shoe from

1935, the cross-body design is

sharp and sophisticated. irs

Part of enjoying any city is to be able

to dine where the locals eat. With

that in mind, Lauren Aloise saw

a gap in the market and launched

Madrid Food Tour in 2012 after

spending several years working

as a food writer in the city. ‘When

I came across the idea of a food tour

and realised Madrid didn’t have

one, I acted quickly,’ says Aloise,

who moved to Spain from the US.

Her company links tourists

with guides who take them on cu-

linary outings including tapas eve-

nings, trips to family-owned food

shops and visits to food markets.

Along with sampling dishes in tav-

ernas which are rich in history,

guests get to explore local neigh-

bourhoods, like Huertas, and to get

an insight into the local way of life.

50 | EXPER IENCE

The capital of Spain has a reputa-tion for embracing a variety of in-fuences, bringing together diverse peoples, cultures and cuisine. Ma-drid’s many restaurants are distin-guished due to their acceptance of outside infuences, in both ingre-dient choice and cooking styles, resulting in a deliciously varied gastronomic scene. The city’s cu-linary ofering has wide appeal, of-fering everything from traditional homemade dishes to innovative molecular gastronomy.

Madrid’s own gastronomy incorporates infuences from throughout Spain. In fact, even the city’s signature dish cocido

Madrileño, a chickpea-based stew,

is a combination of stews from a number of regions. Despite the city’s landlocked location, Ma-drid’s citizens are known for their love of seafood, while diners with a sweet tooth will be more than satisfed with torrijas (fried bread with honey or sugar). Tapas cul-ture is also a deep-rooted part of Madrid’s gastronomic scene, with diners travelling from bar to bar to eat raciones, many of which are gourmet standard.

Madrid also remains a hub of Michelin star restaurants, serving contemporary Spanish fusion cui-sine and more traditional dishes with the help of some of the world’s best chefs.

TRAVEL COMPANION

La Portegna makes simple yet

stylish handcrafted designs in

leather and canvas with functional

products including bags, cases,

slippers and small leather acces-

sories. The company was found-

ed in Madrid by José Urrutia

in 2009 upon the discovery of

a photo album belonging to his

grandmother, which documented

her travels by boat between the

UK and India in the 1930s and

1940s, including trips with the

author Ernest Hemingway. All

La Portegna products are created

with the modern traveller in mind

and are handmade by artisans in

the south of Spain with an empha-

sis on the use of local and natural

tanning oils. Urrutia is often in

the store in the Salamanca district

to talk to visitors about the collec-

tion. The canvas weekend bag pic-

tured is a limited edition and will

be an ideal companion for your

next trip away. df
