Hello and welcome to the summer edition of

Shona’s Artyfacts.

Rugby World Cup fever stormed the village with

residents and their families gathering to watch

various games in our village centre lounge. While

we couldn’t influence the rugby score, we added

some atmosphere with decorations in reception

and our lounges.

A calendar highlight was our annual Market Day in

October. The event is led by our activities team and

a volunteer group of residents who donate goods

and run the stalls alongside external craft suppliers.

It was a great opportunity to pick up some bargains,

enjoy a Devonshire tea and support a good cause

– all funds raised went towards our annual charity

partner for 2019/20, the Breast Cancer Foundation.

It is nice to have the longer, sunnier days; our

gardens have looked beautiful over the last

few months with our winter flowers in bloom.

Our gardeners have been busy planting our next

collection of annual plants, creating something

for you all to enjoy as we approach Christmas.

Please feel free to contact me if there is anything

I can help you with in and around the village.

Kind regards,

Greetings from Debbi...

Well, we are getting towards the end of the year –

incredible how fast it flies by! We’ve had a very

busy time here at the village.

Lots of people are choosing to live in our lovely

village, particularly in our serviced apartments.

You just can’t beat the convenience of having all

your housekeeping taken care of, while enjoying

the independence of your own apartment!

We were lucky enough to have Vicki Lee come and

perform her wonderful Vera Lynn tribute show in

August, we then welcomed back singer Rebecca

Nelson (cover page) who performed songs from

her latest album – what a treat!

Our Art Expo weekend in late October, held in

conjunction with Hutt Art, was a huge hit as usual.

Have a lovely lead-up to the festive season,

and I hope to see you soon.

Recently we held a morning tea fundraiser for

the Breast Cancer Foundation, our charity partner

for 2019/20.

Our townhouse, serviced apartment and care

centre residents were invited to join us for a yummy

morning tea followed by harpist Tiffany Baker’s

solo performance on her lever and triple harps.

Tiffany has been playing the harp since 1999

and has had great success as a performer and

teacher over the last few years. We thoroughly

enjoyed her performance.

Tiffany gave an informative narration on the pieces

of music she played and told us of the research into

how beneficial harp music is for physical, mental

and emotional health.

Our morning tea was a huge success, enjoyed by all.

News from the serviced apartments

On Father’s Day we were

entertained by musician John

Scott. John played the organ,

giving us a few tunes and helped

us celebrate a family event.

John is a regular and very

popular visitor to our serviced

apartment lounge, and our men

insisted the ladies attend the

show too.

John played a variety of musical

styles for us all to enjoy. A

special afternoon tea followed

the concert with an assortment

of delicious food. A good time

was had by all.

Hello, my name is Margaret Turner and

I’m a serviced apartment resident here at

Shona McFarlane.

I was born in Bakewell, England, though spent most

of my childhood in the picturesque country town

of Youlgreave. Our village was surrounded by a

lovely wooded area and is well known for the rock

formation, Robin Hood’s Stride.

My father had his own business, working as a

surgical boot repairer and I recall he helped to

design shoes for children with foot issues.

My mother was a housewife, and I was number

three of six children. I had a very happy, carefree

childhood, with fond memories of playing in the

woods and swimming in the local rivers and dams.

When I left school, I worked in a general store and

remember one of my duties was to count the

rationing coupons. I then became a nanny. When I

married my husband, Trevor, we moved back to my

birth town where we raised our two daughters.

In the early 1970s our family emigrated to

New Zealand as Trevor took up a position with

Exide batteries. We settled in the Hutt Valley.

I re-entered the workforce as a store manager for a

shoe specialist, which was part of Hannahs shoes.

In New Zealand we spent many wonderful holidays

in our caravan.

I hadn’t been planning to come and live here at the

village, but out of the blue a serviced apartment

became available and I decided to take it. I really

enjoy village life, and the staff have helped me

settle in. There is a lovely community spirit here.

Hi, my name is Cynthia Pearse and

I am fortunate enough to live only a

two-minute walk from my new job

here at Shona McFarlane, where I

am the Independent Townhouse

Activities Coordinator.

I live with my husband and 12-year-

old son. I am originally from

Auckland but have lived in Lower

Hutt now for just over 13 years.

My parents live independently in

Ryman’s Evelyn Page village. I visit

them as often as I can, so I had an

idea of what a Ryman village was

like before starting my role with

Shona McFarlane in July.

When I had my son in 2007,

I started work as a childcare

educator, then worked for a dog

boarding and grooming facility. I

thoroughly enjoyed this job and

I was a big part of growing the

business over eight years.

This year I was ready for a

change and approached the

village looking for work. From that

moment on it all just fell into place.

Everyone has been so welcoming

and lovely here at the village.

Outside of work I enjoy watching

my son, a keen young sportsman,

take part in his many endeavours.

Introducing Cynthia

Everyone has been

so welcoming and

lovely here at Shona.

Vintage cars went off with a ‘bang and a toot’ for

some of Shona McFarlane’s care residents.

Vintage car club members joined us for a BBQ and

gave us the opportunity to view their cars. The treat

was enjoyed by all, including the residents’ families.

Above: Residents said it was a perfect day to rediscover the joys of older vehicles.

Two years ago, our care residents were treated

with a purpose-built raised garden so they could

join in actively as part of a garden club. Everyone

has had fun with many hours of planting and

weeding, then eating the produce.

Opera opening night

A group of townhouse residents were

enthralled with the opening night performance

of The Turn of the Screw in Wellington.

The performance of the famous Benjamin Britten

opera was attended by Diane and Ray Howe, and

John and Molly Andreae.

They met up with Dame Malvina Major Foundation

trustee Jenny Wollerman, having received tickets

from the foundation.

The four enjoyed dress circle seats in

the Opera House for the performance. Ryman

is a long-time sponsor of the Dame Malvina Major

Foundation, which often supports New Zealand

opera productions.
