INTRODUCTION

The four day workshop with Shin Azumi and the Man + Humanity 1st years focused on ‘sleep’, as a very basic human activity and instinct.

The aim of the workshop was to develop design proposals which explored the contemporary social meaning of sleep. Who, where, how, and why?

“-If you place 2-3 chairs together side by side, you are able to fall asleep on them.- I personally can fall into a deep sleep on an air plane or train, if I have an eye mask, ear plugs and two air cushions.- My baby falls asleep very quickly while he is moving in a baby buggy.- In Japan there is a government campaign named ‘Can you sleep?’, introduced to help prevent stressed workers from committing suicide.- I always wonder if homeless people are able to obtain a good level sleep or not.”

“I ALWAYS BELIEVE A PRESENTATION IS A FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT. THE STUDENT HAS TO ENTERTAIN ME, TUTORS AND THE OTHER STUDENTS WITH THEIR CREATION AND INTELLIGENCE...

IF OTHER PEOPLE DO NOT ENJOY THE CREATION, IT HAS FAILED.”Shin Azumi

HOW TO GET SOME PRIVACY BACK IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTMARIE MERCIER

We all travel by bus, subway, train and take the opportunity to sit and to sleep, trying to rest from the day/night.

But in these places there is a cruel lack of intimacy, even more when you sleep with open mouth.

Hands are used to hide something usually, but it is also a symbol which tells “stop”. I used hands which once combined with a mask, cover eyes and mouth and protect yourself from the looks of people around.

The idea is to be able to combine it also with various elements like ipod pocket and make it become yours.

NAPPING CRADLE ANASTASIJA MASS

If you often experience hypnic jerk, it means that you have an irregular sleep schedule, you are tired, and maybe you work too much. While falling asleep your brain is active while muscles begin to relax causing the brain to believe that your body must be falling through air. It is thought that this causes you to thrash your limbs in an attempt to catch something. Some people in Latvia thinks that people experience this because earlier (in history) they where sleeping in trees and they still have instinct not to fall down.

Napping on a tree seems to be very relaxing way of resting. Swaying on branches, sound of leaves in the wind is something we do not experience in big cities. And napping is a healthy thing to do and everyone of us should take time for that - than we can be more productive and healthy.

Napping Cradle is a rocking surface for taking a nap. It has the qualities of a tree - swaying and a gentle rustle sound that makes a person relax more and have a better quality nap.

120% BLANKETMAYA BEN DAVID

Going to sleep is an intimate moment for me, the silence evokes the senses, and the sensitivity to our tactile sensations is increasing.

Observing how I cover myself while sleeping, I discovered that I have preferences and typical ways to do so, furthermore I realized that I’m not the only one, many people have their own way to cover themselves.

Focusing on touch and tactile sensations, this project explores the relations between a cover and a blanket as an opportunity to create a variety of sensations which will refl ect our personal ways and behaviors with the blanket

WHAT IF TECHNOLOGY GOT TIRED?JO SZCEPANSKA

In the 24/7 world, sleep is struggling to fi nd a place in many people’s lives. The pressures of work and family commitments, along with the reach of technology into bedrooms, are making it ever more diffi cult to just turn off and sleep.

So what if technology got tired, what if out phone, TV or computer could sense when we were tired and prompted you to fl ick that switch? The technology needed to create this, is already out there and being used, Electrocardiographic monitoring, Skin Conductance testing, thermometers and cameras. So why not use technology to make a change to our lifestyles? Allowing us to recapture the all important element of sleep.

DREAM BOXCEYLAN USAKIERALI

If the average person spends 8 hours a day sleeping, and lives an average life of about 75 years, then he or she has slept nearly 25 years of her life away. Can we get more out of all those years than just rest?

With lucid dreaming that’s a very real possibility… A lucid dream is a dream in which the sleeper is aware that he or she is dreaming. A lucid dreamer can actively participate in and manipulate imaginary experiences in the dream environment.

Once you are aware you are dreaming you can alter your dreams and dictate what happens: you can do anything you’ve ever wanted, go anywhere you’ve ever desired!

SLEEPING POCKETSEUGENIA MORPURGO

In extreme sleeping conditions, like those faced by the homeless, cold is a primary issue.

A Sleeping-pocket is a sleeping bag made with cheap, thin, waterproof material, that is divided into different pockets. These pockets can be fi lled with paper or dead leaf to help keep body warmth in.

The material allows the user to fold the sleeping bag into a small volume, making it an object that can be easily carried around during the day.

MAINTAINING DREAMS- KEEPING IT PERSONAL IN SHARED SLEEP ENVIRONMENT

CRISTIE BLANDFORDWhen you are a child your bedroom is your environment you are surrounded by all your possessions. Later in life the bedroom can become a blank canvas void of this expression.. particularly in the aspect of couples sharing a bedroom. My creation allows for this identity to be concealled/revealled. The idea of individual identity within a relationship is very important. It allows presious items with emotional value not to become lost.

It can be used to make hospital stays/ hotel room stays more relaxing- through the sense of a familiar environment.
