2019 Shannon Basin Online Survey Results

ABOUT THE PROJECTThe Sea to Sky region has seen a significant increase in recreation and tourism visitation over the past 10 years. The Shannon Basin, located near the head of Howe Sound in the heart of the Sea to Sky, is a popular year-round recreation destination for locals and tourists alike. The Shannon Basin encompasses Stawamus Chief and Shannon Falls Provincial Parks, the Shannon Creek watershed including Mt. Habrich, Sky Pilot, Goat Ridge, the Olesen Creek and Gonzales Creek watersheds, and Petgill Lake. The area provides a wide range of world class recreation opportunities and spectacular views of Howe Sound and the surrounding Coast Range. The area has been home to First Nations peoples for thousands of years and continues to be culturally, spiritually and economically important to First Nations communities today.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development (“the Ministry”) is working to develop a visitor use management strategy for the Shannon Basin that supports sustainable recrea-tion while also protecting the area’s important cultural, environmental, and wildlife values.

The Ministry is partnering with Squamish Nation and working in collaboration with BC Parks and the Fraser Basin Council to co-develop the visitor use manage-ment strategy. The Fraser Basin Council is assisting as an impartial facilitator with outreach and engagement.

ABOUT THE SURVEYIn September 2019, Fraser Basin Council assisted the Ministry with a public online survey to gather input on what people value about the Shannon Basin, how people recreate here, and what people think is most important for future management of the area.

The survey was posted on Fraser Basin Council’s website and promoted through social media and other channels. Input from this survey will inform the planning process. Public feedback will be considered by project partners as we work together to identify objectives for the future management of the Shannon Basin.
