  • Entrepreneurship, independence and strong brandsA son of a merchant, Sven G. Nieminen founded

an import and wholesale business for seeds in

1933. He started the seeds import and export

trade even though he did not have any prior ex-

perience in farming. As Finnish agriculture was

undergoing a period of strong growth after the

years of depression, there was a continuing de-

    mand for high-quality seeds.

Trading relations with European seed merchants

were established as early as the 1930s. A signi-

fi cant part of the Finnish seeds trade was soon

    conducted through Sven G. Nieminen.

During the war, Sven G. Nieminen served as a Finnish

seeds trade agent assigned by the Ministry of Supp-

ly; in practice his company assumed responsibility

for the supply of agricultural seeds for all Finland.

During the reconstruction period, operations fo-

cused on the import trade and business activities

were expanded to grain processing machinery in

the 1950s followed by gardening machinery and

recreation products in the 1960s. In the 1970s

the product range expanded further by industrial

    equipment and components.

A strong trust in partners and extensive coopera-

tion networks helped Sven G. Nieminen create new

businesses. A generation change was experienced

in the 1980s when Sam G. Nieminen, son of Sven

    G. Nieminen, joined the business and eventually

    assumed leadership.

An entrepreneur-based sales network was estab-

lished in the 1980s to support the operations of new

business areas the import of farming machinery.

Signifi cant reforms were carried out during the

recession of 1990s which enabled new growth for

the company. Operations in the neighbouring Baltic

States and Russia were started in the mid-1990s.

The sports products shop launched in 2006

was a natural step for the SGN Group looking for

    new domains.

With growth, the facilities started to become

  • We operate in a broadand strong brands market areaFor us, Russia is an area of strong growth, and

we make signifi cant investments there. We con-

tinuously expand and develop our local partner-

ships and dealer networks, and introduce new

products into the market. The Russian market

forms almost one third of the turnover of SGN

Group. We are committed to long-term operation

in the Russian market, and the next generation

of our family business works in St. Petersburg.

Because of the geographical coverage we can

serve our customers better than ever. For pro-

duct deliveries we have warehouses, for example,

in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Yekaterinburg, and

    Vladivostok.

Russia o ers us a great, potential market, in

addition to which, we also have a subsidiary com-

pany in Kazakhstan, and close co-operation with

dealers in Belorussia and the Baltic Countries. We

want to grow and actively look for opportunities

to expand our operations to new market areas.

One of our strengths is that we know di erent

potential for the sales of recreational products.

Our subsidiary OOO Sumeko was founded in

The economy of Kazakhstan is stable. We are committed to operate in the area and develop our operations for the long term. The market area has huge growth potential. We believe that in the next few years to come the demand for recreational products will experience strong growth. • quality landscaping. The main part consists

of lawns, which are grown from high-quality

seeds and fertilizer. A well maintained lawn

provides yards, parks and sport turf with their

green image. A good lawn endures entertai-

ning, outdoor activities, and hobbies. Wear

resistance and renewal are achieved with

    high quality products.

The prettier greenery is required, the more

diverse maintenance and equipment is nee-

ded. The work becomes easier when the

most suitable landscaping and real estate

    management machinery are selected.

A well designed home garden and beautifully

constructed yard are an investment which

brings comfort to the yard for years to come.

Hobby gardening is a good counterweight

to todays fast-paced rhythm of life. The self-

grown carrots, turnips and salads from ones

own plot add taste to a summer meal. Wate-

ring equipment designed for home gardeners

help keep the growth green throughout the

    growing period.

    Appropriate garden machinery of good

quality is needed for the year-round garden

work. It makes it e ortless to prepare a vege-

table patch, keep the lawns in an impressive

condition, and take care of trees and bushes

and snow removal is not too taxing, either.

The level of quality of a golf course starts already in the planning. It is important for us that our golfers remember the excellent turf of the course.

Because every course is different, we appreciate competence and individual service, and that we get from S.G. Nieminen. Our greenkeeper co-operates closely with them.

from our own stock usually within the same day.

Our clientele consists of farmers, machine contractors and groundcare professionals. Our most important products are the New Holland and Case IH tractors and agricul-tural equipment represented by Agritek, and their after sales.

Due to the structural change in agriculture, the requirements set for machine investments are continuously increasing. Farms are ever larger in size and more professionally ma-naged, which emphasises the importance of machine quality and reliability of operation. Well-functioning after sales and flexible service play an increasingly important role in the purchase process.

I find it important that SGN is an entrepre-neur-driven organisation. It is able to react quickly to changes in the industry. SGN rep-resents a product range needed in the farming industry widely recognised high-quality products manufactured by strong suppliers.

Effective cooperation with third-party suppliers is becoming increasingly impor-tant in the paper industry. In this industry as well, even a minor outage will rapidly increase costs.

I am responsible for the spare parts for two paper machines, among others. The nozzles provided by the Spraying Systems Company are used in the paper machines spray headers. The pumps supplied by SGN are used in applications such as well eva-cuation and sampling pumps.

  • the right technical solutionOur main products are Christmas and summer flowers. We changed the heating system of our greenhouses to a GILLES industrial boiler with a moving grate, and use pellets as fuel. In connection with building a new hall, we decided to use a new method of heating, which brings savings, provides better efficiency than fuel oil and burns cleanly.

In addition, it is important to us that the system we use represents advanced technology and has plenty of features which make the use, control, and moni-toring easy. We have calculated that the investment has been profitable and the savings compared to fuel oil are significant.

  • Loyal customers through after sales

Modern agricultural machines are full of computer technology, but also when ser-vicing, an increasing number of machines are connected to a computer to determine the problem. It has made it easier and faster to locate the hard to detect faults. Even the newest technology is not helpful without competence.

We want to offer our customers fast main-tenance service, which they appreciate. It is not feasible have work machines stand idly in service, so together with Agritek, we have developed efficient and exact delivery logistics.

Staying on top of things requires conti-nuous improvement. Agritek supports us by offering both special training and electronic tools which facilitate problem solving, such as the EST diagnostics tool, and the online service knowledgebase, ASIST.

The role of after sales has grown to be one of

the most important factors in the maintenance

of customer relationships. A mere product is

not enough, but together with the product, the

customers want certainty of spare parts and

well-functioning service. A good end result is

reached when well-trained spare part and service

entrepreneurs serve locally and the importer has

e cient spare parts logistics. Our common goal

is that we can serve our customer throughout

    the lifecycle of the product.

We listen to our co-operation partners and our

customers, and we are always ready to develop

our operation. Our operation is intensifi ed by

SGNet, which is our real time ordering system.

The logistics chain of our spare parts warehouse

has been optimized to be as e cient as possible.

Collection takes place with mobile terminals, and

the e cient enterprise resource planning system

SAP R/3 ECC supports all logistics operations. In

addition, we have direct access to the systems of

our principals. Altogether almost 60,000 spare

part items are found in our warehouse, and our

database contains the information of over 2.3

million products. The most commonly needed

spare parts are almost always found in stock, and

we can order the remaining ones from Central

    Europe even within 24 hours.
