Like we previously reported this month Nippon Columbia isreleasing a series of five CD singles based on the charactersof Idolmaster Cinderella Girls a trading card-esque socialgame for smartphones and feature phones that does notactually feature a single line of voiced dialogue (other thanin the TV commercial of course)

The good news the Idolmaster Mobile i app is totally free todownload and just by downloading and launching the appyoursquoll be able to play with an interactive Haruka Amami 3Dcharacter model ndash without even having to log into the gameservice proper

The bad unfortunately you literally have to be in Japan toactually play this or even access most of the non-gamingfeatures (like the augmented-reality photo-taking mode)

(Unless you can trick your iOS devicersquos GPS sensor byspoofing your location that ishellip a little bird ndash no not 765primesKotori Otonashi [【【【【] ndash tells me therersquos an app for that inCydia for jailbroken devices)

Anyway therersquos a very good reason why Idolmaster Mobilei is quite literally Japan-only the developer calls this an

ldquoarea gamerdquo and what it means is that you as a humbleproducer for one of 765 Productionsrsquo aspiring idols aresupposed to schedule work for your idol in various locationsin Japan ndash any of the 505 areas within the countryrsquos 47prefectures ndash and physically travel to that location by acertain date in order to ldquoclearrdquo the assignments

If that sounds a little preposterous to you well you donrsquotreally have to go out of your way to clear these assignmentsSuppose if you live in Ueno and travel to say Shinjukufor work Along the way yoursquore going to pass by AkihabaraAkasaka central Tokyo etc ndash if you picked up any jobs offersfor your idol in those locations one train ride will clear all ofthose jobs in one go ndash provided yoursquore lucky enough to findoffers in those areas on the same day

That said you will eventually want to have cleared jobassignments in all 505 areas of Japan for trophies andimproving your idol and producer ranks ndash although againplayers are not actually expected to physically go to all 505areas Instead producers can entrust job offers in out-of-reach areas to other producers An in-game message boardfunctionality will help facilitate such exchanges

Apart from the main ldquoarea gamerdquo itself therersquos also a built-in Twitter client an augmented-reality photo-taking modeand a clock feature ndash tap on the time to have the idol yoursquorecurrently managing tell you the time Unfortunately noneof these features are actually accessible until yoursquove loggedinto the game service proper ndash which you canrsquot access unlessyour iPhonersquos GPS coordinates say that yoursquore in Japan (Irsquovetested this myself) Why the developers werenrsquot generousenough to at least offer a taste in some sort of ldquoattract moderdquoIrsquoll never understand

When Sega opened its official website for Next HatsuneMiku Project Diva I thought it weird that there was no PVtrailer released As it turns out Sega was just holding out onus last night they finally put the trailer out

The trailer shows off the Miku Emerald and Ruby Rukamodules as the two Vocaloids engage in a dance-off inWorldrsquos End Dancehall as well as offer a brief taste ofPierretta Miku in the music video for Catfood

We also get to see in action the new ldquoScratchrdquo mechanicwe detailed yesterday ndash when star-shaped targets overlapon star icons tap the screen The trailer notes that thismechanic is only present in the Vita version of the game andnot the PS3 one for obvious reasons

As a bonus Sega has also put up a ldquoHow to Playrdquo movie forthe English version of Miku Flick

Home version to be based on Tekken Unlimited TagTournament 2 (you can find the game in certain arcadesin Singapore) which lets players choose between jumpinginto the fight with a team of two characters (Tag) or justone (Solo) There is also a ldquoPair Playrdquo mode also allows twoplayers to fight on the same team up to four can rumble atonce

When you play Solo and go up against Tag teams your healthregenerates your attacks hit harder and you have morechances to go into Rage mode during which you dish outsignificantly more damage

Conversely each character on a Tag playerrsquos team has lesshealth than their Solo counterparts However Tag playersbenefit from having more options at their disposal ndash likeextended combos and a defensive manoeuvre called ldquoTagCrashrdquo where your benched partner will dive in from the topto save your point character from taking heavy damage

In Solo vs Solo and Tag vs Tag matches the game willfunction similarly to Tekken 6 and the original incarnationof Tag Tournament 2 ndash which came out in Japanese arcadesSeptember 2011 ndash respectively

In a previous interview with 4Gamer Tekken seriesproducer Katsuhiro Harada said that the decision tointroduce the option to go Solo in Unlimited was promptedby fan feedback

ldquoWhen we did a survey on Tekken players the responsesreturned were split in half One half absolutely loved TagTournament 2 while the other half said that they couldnrsquotremember the move sets for two separate characters andasked for the home conversion to be released soon so theycan practicerdquo he said

Rather than simply acquiescing with fan requests andrelease a console version right away Harada said that he

thought it was a better idea to tackle the existing problem atits root

At first the Tekken team tried simply giving players theoption to pick two of the same characters

ldquoWe tried this out and it turned out to be extremelydiscomforting (Laughs) For instance if Lili were to launchher opponent and tag out in comes Lili againhellip what the(Laughs) Also suppose all four characters on both teamswere Lili we donrsquot even know whatrsquos going to happenanymorerdquo Harada told 4Gamer

ldquoTo be sure we had a bunch of test players come in to givethis [duplicate characters on a team] a go The feedbackreceived was unanimous lsquothis is just not very funhelliprsquo So wehad them try 1-vs-1 instead As this format was pretty similarto past Tekken games naturally it played wellrdquo

Once 1-vs-1 was included Harada had the testers tried 1-vs-2 All the testers found this to be incredibly interestingafter about five minutes of play he said ldquoTag players whocouldnrsquot beat their opponent would switch to Solo play Andthen when they lose as a Solo player they go back to Tagrdquo

Harada also talked a little about Pair Play claiming that thiswill allow two gamers in a team to defeat stronger opponentsthat neither can defeat on their own due to the switching ofplay styles in the middle of a match Although initially thetwo team mates would likely step on each otherrsquos toes (notunlike Asuka and Lili)

Tekken Unlimited Tag Tournament 2 cabinets in Singaporearcades do not appear to support Pair Play at this moment ndashthey are hooked up in head-to-head set-ups ndash so wersquoll just towait till the console version is out to verify if Haradarsquos claimis true

The console version will feature more characters ndash over50 as opposed to Unlimitedrsquos 44 ndash as well as the usualoverload of modes yoursquove come to expect from Tekkenhome conversions One mode thatrsquos been revealed so faris Fight Lab In it according to the press release ldquoplayerscan customize the moves and appearance of new trainingcharacter Combotrdquo Sounds like the create-a-ghost-datafeature in the PSP versions of Tekken 5 and 6 albeit inupgraded form

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will be released for the PS3 andXbox 360 in September this year ndash almost exactly one yearfrom the original arcade release (September 2011) and halfa year after Unlimited (March 27)

Segarsquos official Hatsune Miku Project Diva Blog has just beenupdated with the third instalment of their ldquotechnical briefrdquo

series of blog posts that describe how they bring out theclarity of the Vocaloids in the arcade game I will be goingthrough each of the articles here in a series of posts

1 Anti-Aliasing

As you can see from the above image Miku above has lots ofjagged edges as pixels on any screen are square in shape andthese artifacts are known as aliasing effectsnoise

So to remove this ldquonoiserdquoThe solution is to use a technique known as ldquoAnti-Aliasingrdquo

Anti-Aliasing is the technique of minimising the distortionartifacts known as aliasing when downscaling a high-resolution image at a lower resolution

Until Version A of Project Diva Arcade an AA method knownas ldquoTemporal Anti-Aliasingrdquo (Temporal AA) which was alsoused in Virtual Fighter 5 was used

From the image above you can see that the ldquonoiserdquo on Mikuhas been reduced by quite a bit and the sharp edges are nowless prominent

Temporal AA uses frame data from previous framesand ldquoblendsrdquo them with the current frame to achieve aldquogradientrdquo While this method significantly reduces jaggiesin still frames if there is high rate of motion Temporal AAwill be less effective as the rate of change will be too fast toldquosmoothrdquo the image Which was a problem for Project DivaArcade (PDA) as the series uses lots of zooms and panningof the camera Thus the effects of Temporal AA are quitelimited

And thus in Version A Revision 1 Morphological Anti-Aliasing(MLAA) was implemented

The picture above shows Miku after the application ofTemporal AA and MLAA As you can see along the edges arenow more smooth

How MLAA works in a nutshell is by blending theneighbouring pixels to form a ldquogradientrdquo to give it a morenatural smooth (More on MLAA here)

More Facts and explanations

1 While itrsquos now nice and smooth you will notice that Mikuseems to be oversmoothed till some of the edges canrsquot beseen Thus a sharpening filter is used to sharpen the edges

2 The basics of Anti-Aliasing is to draw the image on thebuffer a few times and then ldquosmoothrdquo out the edges byblending all of them But as this is a real-time rendering ofthe game to draw it into the buffer many times per frameis too computationally expensive Thus the previous frameswere used as a guide

3 Temporal AA with Camera Blur can still keep up with thecamera motions but in the test with Virtual Fighter 5 Therewere cases where there was image glitches where the imagewas uncompleted Thus we dropped Camera Blur

4 The video card has Multi Sampling Anti-Aliasing (MSAA)functions built in While MLAA produces a great effectitis also very computationally intensive thus during thesong selection screen where it does not require such greatrendering MSAA (NVIDIArsquos CSAA to be precise) is used

The current picture was taken at a shutter speed of 120th ofa second while the train was passing by

ldquoHajimete no Koi Owaru Tokirdquo by Ryo(Supercell) intronormal without motion blur

In ldquoVer A Rev2Prime the additional song ldquoHajimete no Koi gaOwaru Tokirdquo starts with a camera view rushing down theplatform

The game camera will not blur even while moving at highspeeds It will look like a still picture because the shutterspeed is zero Watching the animation it would have lookedlike as if the platform was moving in reverse

To avoid this camera blur was added

The same cut Camera Blur has been added to simulate theshutter speed to be at 1120 of a second

A blur in the direction of movement is now added and thepicture looks more fluid The movement in the animationlooks normal nowNot all scenes are currently added with the camera blur butit will be upgraded in the next version up

1 When you take a photo without firmly gripping to yourcamera and it may turn out blurredBut nowadays digitalcameras have sensors that can reduce blurring due toshaking are very common

2 Seemingly going in reverse or if the tires looks like theyare going reverse are the products of insufficient samplingand is a form of aliasing ldquotemporal aliasingrdquo

3 As the game is going at 60 Frames per second the psudoshutter speed was at 1120 secondsIn reality in a dark station at 1120 of a second shutter speedwould be quite dark But as it is just a a game it looks fine

4 Camera blur was actually covered in the 1st article eachsingle pixel will seek the previous frame and multiply it intoa blur by interpolating between the position of the currentframe and the previous frame

5 While in the first article it was explained that during thetest in ldquoVirtual Fighter 5Prime the processing power was notsatisfactory and camera motion blur was dropped ldquoProjectDiva Arcaderdquo uses Segarsquos RINGEDGE arcade board whichcan process motion blur at quite As hardware improves we are able to use techniques thatused to be too intensive We plan to upgrade the technologiesused as we continue on

Some of you may be familiar with the ldquoChance Timerdquomechanic in the PSP Project Diva games ndash or maybe yoursquoveseen it in the game but didnrsquot quite understand what it does

Basically in each song there is a Chance Time segment(usually during the apex of the song) where the top andbottom strips on the screen ndash which displays your score andrhythm meter ndash suddenly gets blackened out which givesthe PV a more cinematic look

During this segment if you manage to land a full comboyoursquoll receive a massive amount of bonus points But dropthe combo once or twice and the bonus you receive getssignificantly lowered

In previous games Chance Time served solely as a high-scoremechanic

In Next Hatsune Miku Project Diva however the PV for thesong will actually be modified depending on how well youperform during Chance Time

Herersquos an example from Worldrsquos End Dancehall (bywowaka)

During Chance Time a star-shaped meter appears in thebottom-left corner of the screen

Fill this up and a giant star-shaped target will appear atthe end of the segment (read our previous report if yoursquorecurious about the star-shapes) At this point what you wantto do is tap on the touchscreen and give it a good rubbinrsquohellipand then something goodrsquoll happen Just like in real life
