Fantasy RPG games are often accompanied with cute or hotlooking girls, regardless if it is 2D or 3D but in Agarest Senki2, the game woos fans who stay traditional to the visual noveland generic RPG elements that comes with lovely 2D artworksand non-complex visual gameplay.

Agarest Senki 2 was released last year and unfortunately, thereis no English version for this game yet. All text, vocals are inJapanese and it helps if you know the language to understandthe story in depth.

At the heart of Agarest Senki 2, we have a turn-based roleplaying game with lengthy story with occasional suggestivebut rather naughty conversations and CGs. It is no surprisethat the game gets a CERO-C rating in Japan but like itspredecessor, the game spans generation of heroes and in orderto do so, you need to do a “Soul Breed” with your heroine. Toput it simple, produce an offspring with your desired heroineto continue the story.

You get the gist of it if you have been playing similargames, your offspring’s stats is determined by your heroine’s“favour level” towards your hero. The game rewards you withplenty of CG artworks akin to a visual novel game and some ofthem are rather suggestive

With Agarest Senki 2, the game is organised in generations(think of it as chapters) as your offspring will breed againand work towards the ending of the saga. The game, however,could get a little bland at times as the world map takes on thetradition of point-and-click system, followed by conversationsthat relate to the story. It gets too routine at times and you willbe left wondering what are you exactly doing at times.

Luckily, your heroines aren’t boring types and there is quitea huge freedom to develop your hero’s favor with them.These heroines take on the characteristics of typical animearchetypes that you love and hate, conversations can be simplyfillers at times during the game which puts the game inquite a negative light. Mini games are found such as anintriguing massaging or hot bath mini-game which you canuse to increase favour with your heroines. PlayStation Move

controller is supported for these mini-games, so you get tohave lots of action with your heroine. ^^

The game adopts grid-based battle gameplay, putting theplayer in the “Movement” and “Action” phase. Characters canbe positioned across the field in a specific way to “Combo”with each other, dealing some nasty damage to the enemy. Justlike its predecessor, there is no “MP” in the game but ratherAction points which determine the actions you can performand it recharges at the beginning of every round. To add somevariety, every character has their personal ultimate skill whichis performed using SP, gained during battle by killing enemiesor when your characters are killed.

Not much has been changed so returning players will be ratherat ease when trying the gameplay

Battle and field graphics take on the form of character spritesin 3D rendered world with minimal detail. Players are whohoping got great detail will be disappointed and will want toskip the game. On a positive note, story scenes are lovely. TheCG artworks are good and character designs with the lovely 2Dbackground is definitely appealing.

The sound department is a hit and miss, some scenes producethe lovely tracks that set the mood while others were ratherbland. The seiyuu (voice actors) cast in the game are amazingthough, some of the common names such as Endou Aya, KanaAsami, Inoue Marina and Sakakibara Yui are in the game.

Agarest Senki 2 may have its flaws but on overall, it is a ratherdecent game if you are into this genre. The game is availableon retail for the PS3 platform.

Conclusion: The game gets a B- rating from me, while the gamefeatures a lengthy campaign, the hefty price tag of S$108 mightbe discouraging to many
