The President’s MessageJeannette Peña Hall, D.D.S.
I constantly open dental journals or receive emails for con-
tinuing education courses where I not only have to spend
money to travel out of town and stay at a hotel away from
my family, but I also notice these courses usually cost a
thousand dollars or more. This is one reason, among others,
I would hope our local dentists realize what the Miami Win-
ter Meeting has to offer.
How can one top a mimosa, continental breakfast, lunch, a
post-seminar President’s Reception with free drinks and live
entertainment, free parking, no air travel needed (as the
meeting is in our own backyard), and pertinent CE courses
to improve the income and management of any dental office
- all for $255?
The Miami Winter Meeting is also a great opportunity to
catch up with other local dentists and see what kinds of
show deals you can swing with our exhibiting dental reps.
The meeting this year has been directed toward the goal of
addressing a wide range of practice interests for both den-
tists and staff, and features didactic courses with information
on the trending mini implants, practice management, includ-
ing patient retention, and labor laws to help avoid hefty fi-
nancial and reputation risks. It also includes implant
temporary fabrication with a hands-on workshop to stream-
line dental practices and increase revenue, and innovative
hygiene and periodontal therapies and strategies to benefit
your challenging patients and improve your bottom line.
There is a little something for each member of the dental
office team.
Where else can you offer to expose your assistant to a hands
on course, which was offered at an American Association
of Periodontology meeting, and valued at over $500, for
only $65, and yet with no associated travel costs? I hope
that I have just made you realize that it is time to get on line
and register for the Miami Winter Meeting before it is too
late.
My wish is to see you there, and to share with you this op-
portunity of enjoying the benefits of having a local district
dental association, which appreciates your patronage.
Members and non-members alike are welcome to attend our
meeting. We have made a strong effort to represent our mul-
ticultural society by offering most of our lectures at alter-
nating times in English and Spanish. The way I see it, there
is really no logical reason to explain why any local dentist
would not consider attending the annual meeting.
Finally, I wish to express my gratitude to Dr. Michael
Eggnatz, Mrs. Yolanda Marrero and Ms. Jackie Quintero for
the effort and pain staking planning they have put forth in
order to provide such a great meeting to our dentists and
staff, and at such a reasonable cost. Thank you!!
“ It’s the place to be: the Miami Winter MeetingFebruary 21 and 22 at The Jungle Island!”

Rich’s Ramblings
Of all of the benefits and perks of being a member of organized
dentistry and the South Florida District Dental Society – my
personal favorite single one of those has long been attending
our annual Miami Winter Meeting (MWM).
I am also excited about our upcoming MWM scheduled to take
place at Jungle Island, Miami, Florida, and encourage all of
you to attend on February 21-22.
Many or most of you reading this have a favorite TV show, a
favorite restaurant, or favorite hobby. So do I. We are all very
much alike in that respect.
And, although it may seem odd that I would readily admit to
having a “favorite reason to belong” to SFDDA all of these
years (since 1986) – I nevertheless felt the need to share mine
with you, including the reasons why, and with some past
MWM memories also thrown in.
Some of you reading this may recall venues preceding the
Miami Hyatt Regency Hotel - such as the Fountainbleau Hotel
and others. However, I believe most would agree that our
longest run of very successful, large, great and legendary meet-
ings (and I use those adjectives proudly and honestly) took
place at the Miami Hyatt located in the heart of downtown
Miami.
I could go on and on about what made those annual meetings
so worthy of our collective pride and enjoyment – three days
of great continuing education featuring nationally renown
speakers, two floors jam packed with exhibitors, and great side
events consisting of local affiliate and dental school parties and
receptions. Our former affiliate, West Dade Dental Society,
threw a party, which was itself worth the price of attendance
(those folks knew how to party!)!
One of my absolute favorite side events, year after year - and
I’m sure many of you also have similar fond memories of this
- was the “Thank G-d It’s Thursday” (TGIT) reception begin-
ning at around 5:30 PM, on Thursday of course, which took
place along the scenic and historic Miami River. My very fa-
vorite part of attending that reception in particular, beyond the
great food, live music, or watching boats cruise by along the
Miami River was, simply put, the people who were there. Each
and every year, I so much enjoyed running into other dentists
I have known from all parts of town, their staff, and in some
cases, their spouses or significant others, with whom I would
rarely connect, if not for the TGIT reception, or more over, the
MWM itself.
In fact, the camaraderie
aspect of our annual
meetings alone - - and
connecting with others
I have not seen, or ordi-
narily would not have seen if not for this event – sits atop my
personal list of reasons why I look forward to attending the
Miami Winter Meeting each year.
Some Other Reflection and Past Memories:
In its heyday, the annual meeting was, by “local” dental meet-
ing standards, one of the most grandiose events one could
imagine, almost of the magnitude of a Hinman, a Yankee, or
Chicago meeting. It was truly - much like our local newsletter
has proven to be over the years – the envy of other district com-
ponents in our state and elsewhere. The MWM has also proven
to be a significant draw for out of town guests, both nationally
and even internationally. One year, I had the good fortune of
meeting a very nice elder oral surgeon from Switzerland, who
told me he travels to our MWM each year, and literally had not
missed one in over twenty years! And I met this very gracious
colleague during yet another of my favorite and more memo-
rable past MWM events – while sipping mojitos aboard an air
conditioned bus, all sponsored by Bacardi Rum, as we were
transported on an excursion to Parrott Jungle.
After a very successful run of meetings at the Miami Hyatt,
our executive council and Miami Winter Meeting Committee
felt it was time to move the meeting to another venue. Several
reasons were at play in the decision making process. For one,
the Hyatt had a somewhat limited exhibit space. Some of our
exhibitors also used to complain if they were located on the
ground level of the hotel, as opposed to the main lobby level,
which they perceived as having a greater exposure and larger
number of would-be buyers of their products than the floor
below.
Although there were mixed feelings within our ranks about
leaving the Hyatt, a seemingly incredible upgrade to our annual
meeting awaited. Our next move would take us further East –
to the oceanfront, and to a seemingly utopian and elegant
choice beyond the expectations of your average meeting at-
tendee – the historic and iconic Fountainbleau Hotel. To the
best of my understanding, it was actually a move back to the
same hotel at which we had previously held our meeting years
earlier. And this was a return to a veritable Camelot, with un-
limited exhibit space, beautiful chandeliers above, and stunning
meeting rooms, not to mention the great restaurants and other
amenities on the grounds of this legendary resort.

Unfortunately, a very hefty price tag also came with it, and the sticker shock and lost revenue
would limit our time there to only two years before forcing our hand in choosing yet another
location.
Our two year stay at the Fountainbleau also came at a unique time for me – when I was co-
incidentally president of our dental association, then known as the “East Coast District Dental
Society” – while also carrying with it a deeper personal reason for my excitement in returning
to the hotel. My personal connection to the Fountainbleau, and more so, the Eden Roc Hotel
next door, involved my family and memories dating back to childhood.
My father’s oldest brother, Harry Mufson, built the Eden Roc, which opened with much fan-
fare in 1955, a year after his former partner and lifelong adversary, Ben Novack, opened the
Fountainbleau.
My first “President’s Message” I had written back then for our newsletter was devoted to
sharing my feelings of nostalgia, and what it was like to return to the two hotels which I had,
in effect, grown up with.
Both hotels were also legendary for the long list of stars who stayed there and entertained
there. Pardon my tangential reminiscing off the main topic here, but I thought I would also
share a couple of pictures with you from those days.
After two years of great times, but with economic struggles, we then moved to another nearby
venue for a couple of years - the Miami Beach Convention Center. Although it proved to be
yet another impressive meeting place for us in its own right, its sheer size, impersonal char-
acter and high cost would once again prompt another change in location, as well as a smaller
meeting size, to our current one –the former “Parrott Jungle,” now called “Jungle Island.”
Thanks to the collective efforts of the Miami Winter Meeting Chairman, Dr. Michael
Eggnatz, the officers of the South Florida District Dental Association and our very dedicated
staff, Yolanda Marrero and Jackie Quintero, our meetings at Jungle Island, which have taken
place since 2008, have proven to be nothing short of an impressive continuation of our
SFDDA’s history of providing excellent annual meetings for our local members, their staff,
and numerous out-of-town guests. Centrally located, with stunning views of the downtown
Miami skyline and cruise ships, and South Beach only minutes away - the great educational
programs, exhibits, fun side events, camaraderie, connecting with colleagues, friends and
staff, and years of great memories – have no doubt continued, and have given me as much
or more reasons than ever in wanting to “be there.’

Memories of MiamiWinter Meetings PastWe asked some of our members to weigh in on their
own “favorite Miami Winter Meeting memory,”
and here is what they had to say:
Dr. Carlos Sanchez: One MWM memory dear to
me was seeing my old professor, Dr. Stanley
Malamed. I had the good fortune to have had Dr.
Malamed when he taught anesthesia at University
of Southern California. When he was a featured
speaker at the MWM, he told Firpo Garcia, who
was a line officer in our then East Coast District
Dental Society, and also a USC grad, “I'd love to
have lunch with my Trojans. " Firpo let us know,
and the few of us who hadn't seen him in years sat
with Stan at the Keynote Luncheon. It made him
very happy and was a great time spent with some-
one we greatly respected, and continue to respect
to this day.
Dr. Guillermo (Bill) Rodriguez: After practicing
dentistry for almost 30 years, I always run into
somebody at the Miami winter meeting that I
haven't seen in years, bringing back great memories
and reinforcing how lucky I am to be able to prac-
tice such a beautiful and fulfilling profession.
Thank you
Dr. Paul Benjamin: The Miami Winter Meeting
has been a part of my “dental DNA” for over 35
years. I just found it fun to do something different
for a few days, see the latest new products and re-
connect with friends. We do live in such isolated
environments - our offices - so it was an annual
breath of fresh air for me to “come out,” like a
groundhog, and see everyone. Prior to our move to
Parrott Jungle (now Jungle Island), I was very in-
volved in putting on the meeting, and most of my
memories are of little things that happened behind
the scenes that few knew about. Some stories are
unprintable - like [so-and-so speaker, name with-
held] being a real [unprintable expletive], and oth-
ers that just gave us a hard time. The majority of
our speakers, however, were the nicest people you
would ever want to meet. Glitches and headaches,
changing meeting rooms without warning, upset at-
tendees for reasons that didn't always make sense,
are all memories near and dear to my heart.
One other personal memory just shows my age. It
is one of me using a quarter in my pocket to fix
slides for a speaker when their slides jammed, an
extra bulb also in my pocket to replace a burned out
one in the projector so the lecture could go on with-
out a hitch, knowing which buttons worked the
overhead lights in a room or a myriad of other little
details, but which helped make the meeting go
smoothly. It just kind of made you feel good to
know you were working with friends to help put on
a great show. I think this was probably the DNA in
a lot of us worker bees, and I am happy to see that
we passed enough of it on to the next generation.
Dr. Tom Nordman: My favorite MWM memory
was a meeting we had at the Miami Beach Conven-
tion Center. I had signed up to hear a world-class
restorative speaker for the morning and afternoon.
For lunch, an out-of-town buddy of mine, Jay Pitts,
and I "snuck out" and ate at Joe's Stone Crabs. We
made it back in time to hear a great lecture. Great
day thus far, but to top it all off, I got a phone call
the next day saying I had won a car! My name was
drawn as the winning ticket for the dental society
Foundation’s raffle for a 2 year lease on Ford Mus-
tang convertible! Now THAT was a great meeting!
Dr. Cesar Sabates: Back in the day, we used to
have “Keynote Luncheons,” which featured well-
known personalities from around town as guest
speakers. I recall one year (2006), knowing that
my wife Lydia had a childhood, schoolgirl crush on
our speaker - former Miami Dolphin and play-by-
play commentator, Jimmy Cefalo – I arranged for
her to sit with him, along with other officers and
dignitaries, on the dais. She spoke with him after-
wards, and we took some great pictures. It was
quite a thrill for her.
Dr. Orlando Dominguez: One of my favorite
memories was the look on a bellman’s face at the
Fountainbleau when he tried to lift a piece of lug-
gage I had – which was full of bottles of liquor we
were “sneaking in” for our President’s reception in
a private suite – and realizing he was not able to lift
it quite like most other pieces of luggage. At that
point, I gladly said, “Don’t worry, I’ll get it!”
Thank you for allowing us to share some past his-
tory and memories with you. And who knows? Per-
haps the best of times and memories may be
waiting before us. This year’s Brazilian Carnaval-
themed event appears to be full of great programs,
both for doctors and staff, programs in both English
and Spanish language (We believe this is a first for
us!) and no shortage of partying and fun times to
go along with it. Please come on out and be a part
of the great times on February 21 and 22. Hope to
see you there!!

OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE
DEAR GENERAL DENTIST: I am writing
to gauge your interest in joining our team. With
our new patient growth, we are seeking a gen-
eral dentist to join our team. This is a great po-
sition that includes benefits, but also offers the
possibility of ownership in the future.
Our Philosophy of the Practice of Dentistry
The aim of our practice is to provide total and
comprehensive Dental Care for our patients.
We look at our patients as people with prob-
lems and feelings, not just as a body connected
to the Oral Cavity. It is our responsibility to ed-
ucate our patients and show them the advances
in modern dentistry. We strive to provide the
highest quality of Dental Care possible for our
patients. Our first obligation is to ‘Total Health
Dentistry’ services and technologies include:
Advanced Oral Cancer Screening. Our oral
DNA testing gives our patients an insight into
their genetic susceptibility to certain diseases.
Digital Camera gives our patients the oppor-
tunity to visually observe and understand their
diagnosis. Dental Stem Cell Banking. Our pa-
tients have the opportunity to store stem cells
from their baby teeth or wisdom teeth.
Cadent Itero System. This system takes a
highly accurate 3-D impression for the crown
or bridge area, completely eliminating the tray
and putty impressions.
Growing for the Future
This year we have embarked on a multi-prong
marketing plan to generate double digit in-
creases in the number of new patients. We’ve
already implemented programs that have pro-
vided a 500% return on investment, with
plenty of programs rolling out in the next few
months.

This is an exciting time to become part of The
Dental Group family, and we would be excited
to have you as part of our team. My partners&
I are eager to speak to you about this opportu-
nity. Please email your CV to dentalof-
