Page 3: SFDDA 2012 Fall Issue

I recently completed my first three months as your SFDDA

president and, I have to say- it has been a whirlwind!! Begin-

ning in June, I attended the Florida National Dental Conven-

tion (FNDC) in Orlando, which included the House of

Delegates (HOD), along with numerous groups and council

meetings.

I am also a member of the Governmental Action Committee

(GAC), which has the purpose of acting on current, past, and

present political issues that affect our dental profession. It is

a very important committee, if you ask me – and one that ben-

efits all Florida Dental Association (FDA) member dentists,

like you. I'd like to think that this group, and all FDA coun-

cils, are there to aid us, the member-dentists. What a GREAT

member benefit!!

In July, I had the privilege of attending the Jefferson-Jackson

Dinner in Hollywood, Florida, which is a Democratic

fundraiser. I attended the event as your SFDDA president and

as a member of GAC. I met and mingled with various polit-

ical figures, and stressed the important dental issues to

whomever would listen. I spoke to issues such as insurance

and non-covered dental services, foreign-trained dentists and

our Florida dentists’ particular needs, to name a few. I thought

of my influence on these politicians and how we were advo-

cating for our profession. What a GREAT member benefit!

In August, I attended the FNDC committee meeting in Or-

lando and worked on next year's convention program. Can

you believe we will have Dr. Gordon Christensen speaking

at our very own state meeting next year? What a GREAT

member benefit!

In September, I attended two af-

filiate meetings, the Miami Dade

Dental Society and the South

Broward Dental Society. Both

groups were well attended and

both Yolanda Marrero, our exec-

utive director, and I were wel-

comed with open arms. Both groups had excellent speakers,

good food and great camaraderie. Due to a scheduling con-

flict, we could not attend North Dade-Miami Beach Dental

Society's meeting, but we plan on attending in October. Con-

sider attending and/or joining your local affiliate. What a

GREAT member benefit!

We also held our executive council meeting in September

and discussed some of this year’s exciting events which are

being planned for you - our MEMBERS. Among the events

include our First Annual Dentists Day Picnic, to be held on

Sunday, October 7, 2012 at Tropical Park, the Miami Winter

Meeting (MWM) on February 1-2, 2013, a new Mentors pro-

gram kicking off at the MWM, participation in the Corporate

Run and the Women's Dental Event in April 2013.

I think you can see where this president’s message is heading

- the importance of membership and the BENEFITS OF

MEMBERSHIP! It's obvious to me, as I am extremely in-

volved. However, I constantly get asked what the benefits of

membership are from non-members. I hope this message

gives you an idea.

Organized dentistry is critical for our profession to stay

strong and united. You, as a member, recognize this. Please

educate your colleagues and stress the importance. The

American Medical Association dwindled in numbers of

member-doctors years ago and you can all recall what hap-

pened to them. They lost political clout and left the doors

open for managed care and corporations to take over and dic-

tate their practices and decision-making. Let's not let the

same happen to dentistry.

Warmest Regards,

President’s Message

Rich’s Ramblings On Being a Mentor: One Story to Tell

- Richard A. Mufson, DDS, Editor

Many of us, at one time or another, have been in a posi-

tion to play the role of advisor, counselor, role model,

or mentor, and in some cases, may have had a positive

and profound influence on the career choice, or the life,

of another individual. If any of you have had such an

experience, please consider sending us your story so that

we may share it with our readers in a future issue.

This is one such story of my own.

A number of years ago, while attending a meeting of the

American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Sur-

geons (AAOMS), another meeting attendee stopped me

in the hallway. Upon doing so, he told me that he had

been trying to “track me down” at several previous

meetings, but was unable to do so until then.

From the moment he introduced himself, I immediately

recognized him as a familiar face I had seen only min-

utes earlier, as one of several oral and maxillofacial sur-

geons (OMS) delivering presentations as part of a

symposium on craniofacial surgery. As a then-faculty

member of a leading university, he presented on a topic

of his main interest and expertise – the surgical correc-

tion of craniofacial deformities in infant children.

During the symposium, I had been especially interested

in his presentation, as I listened very intently from the

second or third row. I was very highly impressed by this

young, smiling, energetic and bright OMS presenting

slide after slide, and case after case, in very interesting

and dramatic fashion, of intracranial approaches to cor-

recting the structure and position of the orbital rims,

frontal sinuses, nasoethmoid complexes and midfaces

of very young children with varying syndromes and de-

velopmental anomalies.

He then told me the reason for stopping me in the hall-

way. It was for the sole purpose of letting me know that,

some fifteen or more years earlier, I was the oral surgeon

who had removed his

wisdom teeth, under IV

anesthesia, when he was a 17 year-old high school stu-

dent.

However, a far greater surprise was the next bit of in-

formation he shared. He related that his experience was

so positive, so interesting and so eye opening for him -

that it was the sole inspiration for his desire to go into

the profession of dentistry.

“Wow, that’s amazing!” I thought.

Also interesting would be the fact that this had taken

place at or near the very beginning of my OMS career,

and during the first two years of which I was practicing

within several group dental offices each week, and in

this case, an office on 49th Street in Hialeah.

He was so impressed with his own experience, he also

referred his then-girlfriend, and now his wife and

mother of their three children, several weeks later for

the same treatment.

With each successive minute of the conversation, my

memory would become more vivid in recalling our in-

teraction both as patient and surgeon, and later, as dental

student and mentor. I recalled a number of conversations

we had through the years, both prior to, and during, his

four years in dental school, in which he would ask my

advice and opinions on several issues. One of the issues

we both clearly remembered was his question of, “What

specialty should I go into?”

My advise to him at the time was a reflection of my own

experience in determining the specialty I would end up

choosing. My answer, which also remained very clear

in each of our memories, was (something to the effect

of), “Get a feeling for what you like and what interests

you most, as you go through the different departments

and rotations in dental school, or what

you feel most passionate about doing.”

That is, after all, what occurred in my

own case. There was no magic ray of

light shining through the clouds and

heaven above telling me to “be an oral

surgeon.” The decision was far less

complex than that. While in dental

school, I simply found that, for some

unexplained reason, I enjoyed my expe-

rience rotating through the department

of oral surgery more so than any other,

and very much looked forward to the

next time I would be scheduled to go

back again.

And although I admit to being a huge

fan of my chosen specialty, OMS, I did

not push this choice upon him. How-

ever, destiny would nevertheless lead

him to choose the same one that I had

chosen.

After completing an OMS residency

training program, he would also earn an

MD degree as part of his six-year resi-

dency program (as some forty percent

of OMS training programs now offer).

He then entered a two-year fellowship

with a nationally renown teacher and

surgeon in craniofacial surgery.

He would then join the university fac-

ulty where he had trained as an OMS,

as an assistant, and then associate, pro-

fessor. This also corresponded to the

same time frame of the AAOMS meet-

ing at which we would reconnect years

after we first met, and from which this

very story would originate.

A few years later, he would then move

to Florida and take on a position as

Chairman of Pediatric Craniofacial Sur-

gery at a leading major metropolitan

hospital for children.

We would also run into each other at a

number of state oral surgery meetings,

at which time, with a sense of humor

and pride, he would again let others

know of our respective role in each

other’s lives.

In summary, I was left stunned and

amazed by this. To think that I could

have played such an important part, or

any part, in influencing the career

choice or pathway so many years earlier

of a young high school student, who

would then go on to accomplish all this,

was truly astonishing.

No, I do not necessarily buy into the fact

that I was quite as much the sole influ-

ence, nor responsible for such a high

level of future success, as he would

have me believe. But if I more humbly

were to believe I was somehow respon-

sible for even a small part of it – I am

left with a deep sensation, which is very

hard to describe or put into words, other

than knowing that, whatever it is – it

sure “feels good.”

This story – although only one of many

potential similar stories out there –

served as a profound realization for me

that any of us, in choosing to help,

guide, and serve as a mentor to someone

else who may be young, whether in age

or career choice, may hold such a pow-

erful, positive, and life changing affect

on yet another aspiring and potentially

gifted future fellow professional.

Please consider being a mentor to some-

one, for there are others in this world

who may truly benefit from that which

you may have to offer. You may then

have a similar story to share and feel

great about. Thank you for allowing me

to tell you my story.

Protecting & Defending

Dr. Gwen Corbett, a Fortress Dentist.

I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It’s a great city full of cajun culture

and a love of LSU.

I grew up in the local dental community. My father was a general

dentist here for 35 years and my mother ran the office. My father

was a very empathetic dentist and an excellent mentor.

I practice endodontics with Drs. Simon and Bond at Root Canal

Specialists of Baton Rouge. Our patients are our priority.

I specialized in endodontics because I really liked the focus. Our

patients are often in pain and afraid. It is very rewarding to relieve

them of both. I’m working on becoming Board Certified to gain a

comprehensive knowledge of the specialty.

I earned my pilot’s license and now I’m working on getting my

instrument license. It is so exciting to get in a plane and go flying,

such a feeling of freedom.

I enjoy triathlons and racing. Exercise is an important part of my

life. Balancing it all with a child is a challenge. I appreciate that

dentistry gives me flexibility with my schedule.

I admire my mother so much. She’s

a cancer survivor with a lot of

energy and fortitude. She keeps

learning and trying new things.

I recommend Fortress

professional liability coverage.

I like the personal service and

the newsletters with the case

studies. They’re a valuable

professional tool. My agent

appreciates my busy schedule and

takes care of my needs.

Why We Do, What We Do, the Way We DoMark Limosani, D.M.D, M.Sc

As dentists, we sometimes short change ourselves into think-

ing our sole purpose in life is to maintain and restore the oral

health of our patients. I believe this is simply the most prim-

itive description of who we are.

Considering the fact that we all understand the complexity

and sophistication behind what we do, it can be implied that

we all have a profound appreciation for the skill and expertise

needed in order to master our craft. Dedication, perseverance

and discipline are but a few of the many characteristics that

define a quality oriented practitioner. We constantly strive for

perfection within a system that often presents certain barriers

that dilute our passion.

I firmly believe our purpose is not only to provide a service

to the population, but also to inspire a culture of excellence

within our community. I feel it is unfortunate that the value

of what we have to offer is being dictated by institutions who

have reduced us to a level of simply being referred to as

“providers.” We meet a need. We supply a service that is in

demand, nothing more, and nothing less.

Individually, we work tirelessly to promote how unique our

skill set is and how we can provide a patient an experience

that is unparalleled. Unfortunately, as a group, we fail to stand

united behind the value of what we do.

I believe that purpose is a decision.

6 We choose to strive for academic success

in order to pursue our undergraduate degrees.

6 We choose to maintain our competitive

disposition in order to have the opportunity to attend

dental school.

6 We choose to persevere through an arduous

curriculum in order to mold ourselves into the best

young practitioners we can be.

Yet in the end,

6 We let others choose how valuable our services are.

6 We let others decide how much our time is worth.

6 We let others dictate what our true purpose is.

I believe it is our duty to support the ADA and it’s component

and affiliate organizations because they are the only ones that

truly understand why we do what we do.

They are the voice that, through advocacy, lets our governing

bodies know how we want to do it.

Thank you for your time,

Mark Anthony Limosani, DMD, MScMDDS Secretary
