welcome! A Message from the Facades+ Partners

We are very excited to welcome you to our annual San Francisco Facades+ conference, symposium, and

workshops. This year our theme is Performance and our keynote speaker is English and Malaysian ecoarchitect and theorist Ken Yeang.

Our New York City conference this past April was the best yet, with a sold out venue and a speaker lineup that drew an audi-ence spanning the AEC industry, with many façade luminaries among both speakers and audience. With every iteration, Facades+ has become increasingly anticipated, better attended, and more engaging. There is good reason for this. Building facade technology and design practices are in the midst of a trans-formation that is bringing a profusion of new materials, processes, and design strategies to the realm of the building skin.

One need only review the facade designs of five years ago in comparison to those on the boards and under construction today to observe this phenomenon. And the evolution of the field is accelerating, driven by the escalating performance and aesthetic demands on building envelope systems. The energy-intensive nature of buildings is now widely acknowl-edged, and broad-based performance enhancements are the only solution. We have no choice but to innovate our way to a sustainable built environment, and the facade is pivotal in this pursuit. Facades+ is a strategic response to these emerging conditions and how they impact the building skin; a learning opportunity intended to facilitate a dialogue that spans the profession, the industry, and the academy.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you, the attend-ees. We recognize that your participation here represents an expenditure of resources, time, and money. The AEC industry has long been deficient in investing in its future. Many of us are working to change that. This conference is intended to give voice to these efforts. We especially want to thank our spon-sors, and hope that all of you will recognize and acknowledge the importance of their support. We also encourage your orga-nization to consider future sponsorship of Facades+ events.

Even as we share in the enthusiasm for this Bay Area event, we are planning our upcoming conferences. This October we return to Chicago, then NYC and SF in 2014. We are excited to add Texas to the tour; in October of 2014 we will be hosting a Facades+ conference in Dallas in partnership with Tex-Fab. KEYNOTE SPEAKERKEN YEANG | HAMzAH & YEANGDr. Ken Yeang is an architect, planner and ecologist best known for his signature ecoachitecture and ecomasterplanning having a distinctive green aesthetic. He trained at the AA School (UK) and received a doctorate (PhD) from Cambridge University (UK). He is principal of Hamzah & Yeang (Malaysia) – its expertise is in deep green innovative ecological architecture and masterplanning that go beyond conventional accreditation systems.

ROBERT AiSH | AuTODESKRobert Aish is Director of Software Development at Autodesk where he leads the DesignScript project. His main focus is the development of end-user computational design tools and their role in multi-disciplinary design integration and optimization..

GiL AKOS | MODE COLLECTiVE*Gil Akos is a founding partner of Mode Collective, a multi-disciplinary design studio based in NYC, where he leads design, research, and curriculum development projects. Gil’s professional work contains built and published projects that range in scale from buildings to products and include significant contribution to the J&J Olympic Pavilion, the Water Planet exhibit in the SF Academy of Arts, and the LARD Furniture Series. His personal interests surround the relationship between simulation and materialization and ways by which this connection can be made tangible.

DEE BiRGGS | TAKTLDee Briggs was trained as an architect at CCNY and Yale University. Fascinated by developing façade technology, she joined the team at TAKTL in Pittsburgh three years ago to help launch the first fully integrated manufacturer of ultra high performance concrete building components. KAREN BRANDT | HEiNTGES & ASSOCiATESSince joining Heintges & Associates in 2001 Karen has managed numerous projects in the US and Asia, focusing on museums, cultural institutions, and custom facades for luxury retail. She currently lectures at Pratt University and serves as a façades specialist in the graduate department’s design studio. She holds degrees in architecture from the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley and the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

BRiAN COOK | SOMBrian Cook has over 11 years of experience in technical architecture and design at SoM. Brian has worked on projects such as the San Bernardino Justice Center in California and the Poly International Plaza in Beijing, China. His commitment to excellence in technical coordination and design include improving the overall caliber of the projects’ design and developing the design of technical elements such as the building envelope.

DiANA DARLiNG, Conference Director | THE ARCHiTECT’S NEWSPAPERDiana is CEO and co-founder of The Architect’s Newspaper, celebrating its 10th year. The A|N media company, based in New York City, consists of three print publications covering architecture and design news in the East, West and Midwest. A|N’s strong online presence includes a web version, newsletters and resource guides. As A|N’s publisher, Diana has won the AIA National Collaboration Award, Grassroots Preservation Award from the Historic Districts

Council, and ASLA NY’s President’s Award. Diana began her publishing career as Director of print production for The Gap’s European markets. She has a BS in Life Science from The University of Texas at Austin. Diana thinks the best part of being a business owner is talking and networking with others. Her goal is to better integrate product manufacturers with the architecture audience. Diana’s creation of the facades+ conferences is instrumental in the accomplishment of that goal.

GuSTAV FAGERSTROM | BuRO HAPPOLDGustav is a registered architect and Senior Technical Designer with Buro Happold, New York. He specializes in design computation and has practiced architecture with Urban Future Organization, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and UNStudio. His work has been exhibited at international venues including the Venice Architecture Biennale, CAADRIA, and the SmartGeometry conference. DAViD FREY | SOMDavid has over 20 years of experience in design, construction administration, and project management. His involvement with projects like the Harvard Northwest Science Building and the International Terminal at San Francisco International Airport has provided him with an ability to quickly understand complex design, technical, construction, and coordination issues and to solve problems in an efficient manner. GARY HANDEL | HANDEL ARCHiTECTSGary Handel is the Founding Partner and Managing Principal of Handel Architects. Since starting the practice in 1994, Mr. Handel has overseen its growth to a firm of over 150 architects, designers, and planners around the world. Mr. Handel leads the firm’s direction by placing an emphasis on enriching the urban environment.

KERENzA HARRiS | MORPHOSiS ARCHiTECTSKerenza Harris currently works on the design and system integration of complex façade systems for Morphosis Architects. Her primary focus is to develop automation systems and parametric tools that can be fully integrated into the workflow, from the early design phase all the way to construction administration. JASON KELLY JOHNSON | FuTuRE CiTiES LAB*Jason is co-founder of Future Cities Lab, an experimental design and research office based in San Francisco that explores the intersections of architectural design with advanced fabrication technologies, robotics, responsive building systems and public space. He was awarded the Architectural League of NY Young Architects Prize, the Oberdick Fellowship at the University of Michigan, and the NY Prize Fellowship at the Van Alen Institute. BiLL KREYSLER | KREYSLER & ASSOCiATES*K&A is a custom molder of fiber-reinforced products located in Napa County. The firm has won numerous awards for excellence in the manufacture of Fiber Reinforced Polymer architectural products, industrial products, and large-scale sculpture. Before founding K&A, Bill was Executive VP and production manager for Performance Sailcraft Corp, Northern California’s largest sailboat manufacturer at the time. He has served as President of the American Composites Manufacturers Association and director of the Composites Institute. He is a co-author of Composites, Surfaces, and Software High Performance Architecture with Greg Lynn.

MAuRYA MCCLiNTOCK | MCCLiNTOCK FACADE CONSuLTANTAs a trained architect and engineer, Maurya’s expertise at delivering an integrated approach to the building envelope is highly valued by clients both nationally and internationally. CLAiRE MAxFiELD, Conference Chair | ATELiER TEN As Director of Atelier Ten Claire’s expertise include façade

optimization, water systems, and carbon reduction strategies. She has served as co-chair of SF AIA COTE and an awards juror for AIA. Claire is a LEED AP, holds a BA from Cornell University and an M.Arch from Princeton University. RONNiE PARSONS | MODE COLLECTiVE*Ronnie is a founding partner of Mode Collective, a multi-disciplinary design studio based in NYC. Ronnie leads the design and development of products and environments for institutional as well as private clients. Stemming from his interest in an open-ended and promiscuous approach to design, Ronnie has spent the past four years co-directing over 100 workshops globally. His experience connecting and learning with others continues to be a source of inspiration and a motivating factor behind Mode Lab.

MiC PATTERSON, Conference Director | ENCLOSMic is a designer, researcher, educator, and entrepreneur whose work focuses on the building skin. He has concentrated his professional and academic career on advanced facade technology and structural glass facades. Patterson participated in the establishment of the Enclos Advanced Technology Studio (ATS) where he works as the Director of Strategic Development. Enclos is a leading national specialty facade contractor, and ATS is its façade think-tank, whose mission is to anticipate and realize the future of the building skin. Patterson has taught, written extensively, and lectured internationally on diverse aspects of façade technology. He is the author of Structural Glass Facades and Enclosures. EDWARD PECK | THORNTON TOMASETTiEdward has over 15 years experience in architecture, building skin technologies, and building systems fabrication. He joined Thornton Tomasetti in 2008 and developed their Building Skin Practice, a division of the firm specializing in the design and engineering of innovative building skins. He has worked as a designer in international architectural firms, a technical leader of a prominent ETFE manufacturer, and is currently a skin consultant for Thornton Tomasetti. RONALD RAEL | EMERGiNG OBJECTS*Ronald Rael is an architect and Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley with a joint appointment in the departments of Architecture and Art Practice. His company, Emerging Objects, is a pioneering design and research company that focuses on innovative 3D printed materials and objects for the built environment. GEOFF ROSSi | ELEMENTAs project Manager at Element Geoff leads partnerships with major curtainwall companies, managing design, production and delivery for sunshade and sunscreen projects. In the past he has practiced at firms including NBBJ and IA, run his own office, and managed the fit-out for Immunex Corporation’s biotech corporate headquarters, the curtainwall package for the WaMu/SAM tower, and multiple retail and commercial projects. STEPHEN SELKOWiTz | LAWRENCE BERKELEY NATiONAL LABORATORYStephen is Group Leader, Windows and Building Envelope Materials, and a Senior Advisor for Building Science at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He has over 35 years of experience in building energy performance and sustainable design, with an emphasis on RD&D of energy efficient glazing and façade technologies, systems and design practices.

OLiVER STEPE | YKK AP AMERiCA iNC.Oliver is Sr. Vice President of YKK AP America, the US arm of the global producer of specialized facade systems. He is responsible for overall strategic direction in the US, where he has fostered a culture based on emerging technologies with a vision to add value to the built environment through advanced product development and exceptional business practice.

BRANDON TiNiANOV | ViEWWith 20 years of technology and innovation experience Dr. Tinianov has worked with wallboard, glazing and software controls. Prior to joining View, Dr. Tinianov was Chief Technology Officer at Serious Energy; his oversight included technology roadmapping, intellectual property, and strategic business development. He is President of the USGBC Northern California Chapter, an accomplished inventor, registered engineer, and LEED Accredited Professional.

BENEDiCT TRANEL | GENSLERBenedict is Senior Associate and Technical Director at Gensler, San Francisco. He is currently leading the technical design of The Tower at PNC Plaza in Pittsburgh. His expertise in diverse code jurisdictions throughout all phases of design and construction ensures the highest standards for building performance, energy efficiency and creative use of materials and systems. JEFFREY VAGLiO, Conference Chair | ENCLOS*Jeffrey Vaglio offers a versatile skill set with experience in both structural engineering and architecture. He works as Associate Director of the Enclos Advanced Technology Studio (ATS) in Los Angeles, a collaborative think-tank devoted to investigating the future of façade engineering and project delivery strategies. He has participated in the design and engineering of structural glass facades and skylights including cable net walls, point-supported glazing, grid shells and double-skin facades. Jeffrey is currently a PhD Candidate in Architecture at the University of Southern California where he has also studied innovation theory and leadership.

DAViD WARDEN | YKK APDavid is the Brand Manager for YKK AP’s enerGfacade®family of facade systems, a LEED®Green Associate, and contributing author to articles on advanced building envelopes. David has extensive experience in the thermal modeling of fenestration. He travels throughout the USA speaking about the evolving energy codes and the role of facade systems.

Tom specializes in solar management applications and the analytics that allow GKD engineers to pre-determine the quantifiable benefits of using metal fabrics.

ANTHONY E. BiRCHLER | zAHNERAnthony works with owners, architects, engineers and general contractors to develop complex metal and glass facades. He shares responsibility for developing 9 US patents created by Zahner and for the development of the ZEPP™ System and initial BIM programming. He is responsible for overall sales and development of the company’s domestic and

VALERiE BLOCK | DuPONT GLASS LAMiNATiNG SOLuTiONSValerie is a Senior Marketing Specialist in DuPont’s Glass Laminating Solutions business. She leads a global architectural projects team focused on structural and security laminated glass applications. She is the chair of the Laminating Division of the Glass Association, as well as the Glazing Industry Code Committee.

ROBERT CLOCKER | PERKiNS + WiLLRobert has 20 years of experience focusing on the design of complex projects, including the revitalization of San Francisco’s Pacific Telephone Building and the P/A Award-winning Calexico Land Port of Entry. A champion of sustainable design, he directs teams of experts and integrates rigorous analysis in the pursuit of distinctive architecture.

DANNETTEL | THORNTON TOMASETTiWith over 20 years of experience in architecture, engineering, façade design, and building technology his façade consulting work includes high-rise towers, civic and institutional structures, and residential towers. Mark has also worked as a specialist façade contractor, with projects including a cable-net and double façade for the Loyola Information Commons in Chicago.

JASON FLANNERY | TAKTLJason is an industrial designer focused on architectural fabrications with expertise in a wide range of materials and manufacturing technologies. At TAKTL he is involved in continued R&D projects and oversees all new product development. Prior to joining TAKTL he created and led the Design Studio at Forms+Surfaces for 8 years. He recently established Five/Fourths Design, a consultancy for architectural product design and development.

BENJAMiN HALL | BENJAMiN HALL DESiGN + BuiLDBenjamin studied at the Danish International School and received his professional Bachelors of Architecture degree from the University of Arizona. He has worked for numerous renowned architects including Will Bruder, Tom Kundig, and Stan Field. He since has started a small design + build studio in the heart of the Arizona desert.

ALE KORTER | CO ARCHiTECTSAlex’s architectural experience in Europe and the US encompasses the design, technical coordination and management of a diverse range of projects varying in size and complexity. Alex holds special interest in developing innovative exterior envelope systems and making environmental, economic, social and functional sustainable design a fundamental part of projects in order to ensure their success over time.

ANDREW KuDLESS | MATSYS DESiGNAndrew is the founder of Matsys, a design studio exploring

the emergent relationships between architecture, engineering, biology, and computation. He is an Associate Professor at the California College of the Arts, earned a Master of Arts in Emergent Technologies and Design from the Architectural Association, and a Masters of Architecture from Tulane University.

FRANCiS O’NEiLL | MESTEK ARCHiTECTuRALFrancis has spent his career in custom fenestration products, including monumental skylights and sloped glazing, custom curtain-walls, structural glass applications, and custom solar shading. He has held numerous positions as a principal, as well as in executive management, project management and sales and marketing positions.

JAMES PARKER | SiMPSON GuMERTz & HEGERMr. Parker has 26 years of experience in structural design and investigation of facades and building structures, and leads Simpson Gumpertz & Heger’s Southern California offices. He is the author of the AISC Design Guide 22, Facade Attachments to Steel-Framed Buildings, and has presented an AISC lecture series on façade performance.

JASON OLiVER VOLLEN | CENTER FOR ARCHiTECTuRE SCiENCE AND ECOLOGYJason is a registered architect and researcher focused on emerging material technologies, specifically, the integration of energy performative structural ceramics, dynamic and environmental simulation, and digital fabrication. Prior to joining RPI, Vollen was an Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona. Vollen is currently a director of Environmental Design Solutions North America, a sustainable and high performance design consultancy.

JOSHuA zABEL | KREYSLER & ASSOCiATESJoshua Zabel is the Director of Digital Fabrication at Kreysler & Associates, a world-class composites fabrication facility. Since earning an M.Arch in 2005 at UC Berkeley he has fabricated or managed the digital aspects of nearly every K&A project. His projects have ranged widely and include architectural facades, submarines, bat skeletons, and satellites.
