Wow, wow, wow! Our membership continued to grow in August with NINE new members joining our merry band. So we are now at 179 members!!! If attendance keeps up, we are going to have many chairs added to our set-up. That’s fine by me—it means the guild is doing something right.

As I mentioned at our last meeting, our annual election is scheduled for October. That is only two months away. So we have volunteers to be Treasurer and to be Program Chair. We still need a volunteer to be President. And it should be someone new. Being president is not difficult and, to be hon-est, it does not take that much time. The guild’s Board of Directors is fully functioning and EVERYONE will be happy to help the new president steer the EQG ship. Here is the description of the position of president, straight from the guild’s by-laws:

Article 3. Officers 3.1 President. The President presides over Board meetings and over general membership meetings in the absence of the Vice President. The President represents the Guild to the public and can enter into contracts and write checks.

What the by-laws don’t include are the traits one should have to be president. From my perspective, and other past presidents may have a different view, the traits that are needed for president are enthusiasm (and a new set of pom-poms, because mine are going to be retired), a vision of where the guild should be headed, a willingness to attend and lead the monthly board meeting and participate in and/or lead the guild’s monthly meeting with members, flexibil-ity, and leadership. But most important of all is a willingness to BE RESPONSI-BLE for the guild. My military education and training firmly engrained in me the principle that, “A leader is responsible for all his people do or fail to do.” So it is with the position of guild president—or, at least, that is how I ap-proached it. And like I stated earlier, there are lots of resources within the guild to help the new president sail a steady course.

Again, if you think you might be interested, send me an e-mail. Being presi-dent, in addition to being a good way to volunteer for the guild, is very gratify-ing. Try it!-You just may like it!

Vice-President’s Report – Sherry Bellack

What an exciting meeting we had in August! Celebrating the success of the quilt show, having so many members participate in Show and Share, a vendor with great fabrics at even bet-ter prices and of course Judy Stone, our wonderfully talented speaker. I am always amazed at what people can do with their own imagination! Using the alphabet for inspiration is a unique twist on quilt themes. It is a little intimidating for sure, but my challenge still stands. We will work on our first quilt show entries and compete in the “Rookie” category in 2016! I have a couple of pat-terns in mind, and will probably try out a few to see what turns out the best. Join me in this chal-lenge, we all need to participate in this guild event and that first quilt entry will be a big step in gaining the confidence and getting the judges critic to make us all better quilters.

Please be thinking about volunteering for the next show committee or board position, you won’t regret it! I am also getting pictures from literally all over the US and world in the Photo Op Shop Hop, it is not too late to enter and I am thinking of some really nice prizes!

Join the Celebration Down By the Riverside!

NQA 46th Annual Quilt Show in Little Rock, Arkansas

The National Quilting Association is excited to announce a partnership with the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. NQA will move to Little Rock for its 46th Annual Quilt Show. The show will open Thursday, June 18 and run through Saturday, June 20, 2015.

According to NQA President Marcel Miller, We are delighted with our decision to move our Annual Quilt Show to Little Rock. The personnel at the Statehouse Con-vention Center, the Marriott, and surround-ing hotel properties are enthusiastic about working with NQA to build a long-term partnership. The proximity of meeting and banquet rooms to the Convention Center display hall will make it quite easy for Quilt Show attendees to attend workshops, lec-tures and other activities associated with our show.

Through the years, NQA has held quilt shows in several locations including Washington, D.C., Tacoma, WA, and most recently Columbus, OH.

I was so pleased to hear from several guild members that they enjoyed Janet Stone as much as I did! Her work is amazing and inspiring. Maybe we all need to do more serial quilts!?!

Coming up:

September 16th will be Laura Wasilowski with "So many chickens and so little time". Laura is an art quilter and founder of the "Chicago School of Fusing". She will have a trunk show of her work and give a lecture on her techniques. www.artfabrik.com

****Her workshop - "Fowl Play: Birds with no Egrets" will give participants a hands-on experience with her fusing techniques for creating beautiful art quilts. It will be from 9am - 4pm in the Summit room. Cost: $60, which includes a kit fee for Laura's hand-dyed fabrics and threads, a pattern, and handouts. Limited to 20 students so sign up ….we still have slots available here!

October16th will be Lola Jenkins. She will be giving us a trunk show and explaining her style of art and por-trait quilting. Many of you may have heard of Lola …. She got her start with lectures and public speaking with our guild back in 2007. And she has come a long way since then. www.lolasdesignerquilts.com

****Her workshop - "Portrait Quilt Wall Hanging" will give participants a chance to create their own raw edge portrait following Lola's techniques. Cost: $50, which includes a kit fee for Lola's pattern (four patterns to choose from) and fabrics. NO SEWING MACHINE REQUIRED for this class. Slots available still.

November 18th will be Eileen Urbanek helping us get re-excited about our stash. Old projects we may have laying around along with all those fat quarters we couldn't resist but don't go within anything else, and all that other "stuff" taking up space. How do we get re-excited about finishing old projects? Or using that ugly fabric? Eileen is here to help us out.

****Her workshop - "Farm House Window Table Runner" will be addressing the basics of paper-piecing! She has a great kit that has several different design elements that require paper piecing. She will guild you through the process. At the end of the workshop, you will be a more confident paper-piecer! You will need to purchase the kit separately via internet or Savage Quilters. Cost: $40 to the guild. You will need to get the two kits (about $15) prior to the workshop. Once you sign up, I will give you the website for the kits. Slots still available.

December 16th, 2014 will be our annual holiday party!! Wa Hoo!!!

Hmm …. ready for just a hint of 2015 ….. How about Sherry Meeks, Elsie Campbell, Ruth Powers, Jan Patek, and Jane Sassaman to name just a few. Cool huh!?!

There were 106 in attendance at the August meeting with nine new members! Was it our Alphabet speaker or our glowing personali-ties...I don't know, but it was a great meeting.

Nancy's president's block kit basket will be on the membership table. If you have not al-ready taken one, please do. I have already made it and it only took me about 15 minutes. The hard part was finding a batik "scrap."

What a great program. I couldn’t believe the workmanship on Janet Stone’s quilts. To be so lucky as to be able to imagine those ideas in your head. There were so many to choose from, I wouldn’t begin to pick a favorite.

The Quilt show committee did an awesome job.

Thanks for you who gave me blankets, placemats and lots of fabric. I’ve ordered two bolts of batting. Hope to have them soon .Will be ordering some new more contemporary fabric for Loving Touch. Sizes are 40x40, 40x60 for older kids. I will have to miss the next meeting for a work obligation I have to attend. See you all in October.

It’s time to start staying inside and quilting again. I have several new Fall projects I’m working on.

President’s Quilt Block

The block I have chosen is the very, very simple “floating stars “ block. I am providing a 6.5” square of light, plain fabric for the center; all you need to do is cut two (2) 3.5” squares (scrappy batik) and sew them to this block.

Here are the directions:

Cut two (2) 3.5” squares of batik fabrc. They do not have to be the same; make it scrappy! On each 3.5” square, draw a diagonal line from one point to the next. Align the block with a corner, and stitch on the diagonal line you have drawn. Trim off the excess fabric of both the small and large blocks .25” from the stitching line. Press the seam allowance toward the batik fabric. Do the same in the opposite corner with the remaining 3.5” square. You will now have a block with two colored cor-

ners. Using a Pigma pen, sign your name or write whatever you want on the center of the square. Please return the finished square to one of the guild meetings between September and January, 2015.

Raffle Quilt

I know it is hard to believe, but I have been thinking about the next raffle quilt. I know that some of you, especially those that were on the quilt show committee, do not want to think about anything except their own projects for awhile, BUT, we need to get started on the next show by getting our raffle quilt together. Sooooo, I would like your input.

I dream quilts. Do you? I had a dream about a shape. It was like a flowing river that splits, like a delta. In the morning, I sketched this shape and then wondered what it would look like in a full-size Modern Quilt.

I have talked to a couple of you about making a Modern Quilt as a raffle quilt and one said she thought it was a great idea. Another said she wasn't sure tickets would sell for a quilt made in that genre. In case you don't know what I am talking about, a Modern Quilt is a utility quilt (that means it is made for the bed, etc) usually made with solid colors and lots of negative space. They usually have some fancy quilting in the negative space.

Nancy said I should bounce it off you. So, what are your thoughts about the next raffle quilt being made in the "Modern Quilt" style. I want you to be candid about this, you will NOT hurt my feelings.
