SEW SPECIAL ‘17
Featuring Judy Kissinger
Saturday, October 14, at United Presbyterian Church, Peoria
Judy Kessinger started her career owning and operating a small retail fabric store in
Louisville, Kentucky. She traveled nationwide holding seminars for Hancock Fabrics for over
25 years.
She designed costumes for national and international figure skaters and created a fast
and easy way to conquer fitting problems for that field.
Judy’s next goal was to make stress-free sewing with simple solutions for fitting. Her
personal style included many relaxed, comfortable, well fitting outfits.
In her search for the “perfect” pattern, she decided to use her experience and create
the system herself. The Master Tops and Master Pants patterns were born! Once you FIT the
basic pattern, you can build and create an entire wardrobe on those two patterns.
Judy is known by many as the Fit Doctor, curing the ills of the sewing “blues”. Sewing is the easy part, but it’s the FITTING
that makes garments come alive and compliment the body instead of just covering it!
Her web site, www.fitnicesystem.com, has allowed her to expand into more teaching tools for her “sewing sisters” with
videos and online classes. Judy has been blessed to have touched the lives of countless women. She has taught them the tricks of
looking trim and feeling fantastic by simply fitting themselves properly.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Sewing is my outlet for
adventure. In fact, awesome adventures
await any seamstress who looks at sewing
as more than just ordinary. Sewing and all
things fiber related are specialized
survival skills necessary to enjoy a
lifelong adventure, never knowing where
the path will lead. Take the hunt for
example.
Hunting for the perfect fabric,
trim or notion for a project is as exacting as any big game
hunt. My most recent safari took me to Sarah’s Fabrics in
Lawrence, Kansas. Entering the store and seeing all the
possibilities was so exciting. I pulled out the yardage that
needed a coordinate.
This hunt was proving to be a challenge so I enlisted
the help of a couple of sewing friends. We circled the bolts of
fabric and a couple of close matches jumped out, but were
returned to the shelves as they were just not quite right.
Finally, there it was, the perfect shade of almost purple with
hints of colors reflected in the yardage I held in my hands. Off
to the cutting table and it was mine. A trophy worthy of my
sewing skills without the delay of locating a taxidermist.
Sometimes a sewing adventure awaits at an art
gallery. I attended an exhibit entitled And Still We Rise: Race,
Culture, and Visual Conversations & Narratives of the Soul.
The artists used fabric as a medium to create quilts and
garments to express narratives of nearly four centuries of
African American history. The pieces revealed the stories of
activists, educators, poets and others instrumental in
significant moments in American history. This adventure was
totally awesome.
Sewing adventures take you to workshops and
seminars where one meets sewing/quilting celebrities and the
brain learns something new. My first learning adventure took
me to Esther’s Place in Big Rock, IL. Here a vibrant and
energetic Natasha guided me and three of my sewing friends
on a journey through wool felting and shibori dyeing
techniques. It was an exhilarating adventure.
Later this summer, I met Aisha Lumumba at a
workshop teaching her method of building a collage quilt. Her
technique gives the fabric artist a place to use even the tiniest
scrap of a coveted fabric to make something beautiful. How
awesome is that?!
There are even great sewing adventures to be had
right in your own sewing room. These adventures may not be
exotic, but they are filled with problem solving, dangerous risk
taking and skill testing. My husband’s favorite work shirt was
in front of me with a collar stand so worn it could not
withstand any more mending. Collecting my sewing tools and
finding the perfect scrap from my stash, I started an appliqué
process with the precision of a world class surgeon. An hour
later, the shirt was hanging in the closet, and I was feeling a
bit smug.
I challenge you to make every sewing task an
adventure. I encourage you to take a sewing safari and perfect
the hunt, learn a new skill or polish an old skill. Your life will
be so awesome.

A WORD FROM YOUR COMMUNITY LIAISON September 15
th at the North Allen Branch Library is our next scheduled day to sew for the charities we
support. We do this because it is a worthwhile cause and, as a guild, ASG requires that we give back to our
communities in order to keep our non-profit status. So as a reminder, any sewing you do for charity of any kind,
please keep records of your hours and submit them to our Vice President, Martha Gamble.
On the 15th, we will be supporting those women who have breast cancer by sewing anti-ouch pouches.
This is the brainchild of member Deon Maas and the need in Peoria is great. We donate approximately 75 of
these a month to OSF and Methodist.
YOU are needed. The kits are cut out by members Pat West and Deon Mass (thank you both) so please bring your sewing
machines, your good humor, and your lunch! I have said in this space before, what a fun day it is and everyone leaves feeling so good
about what has been accomplished. If you cannot bring your sewing machine, please bring shears (not your best pair) to cut hook and
loop tape or an iron and an ironing surface. Directions also have to be folded and kits assembled so there are a few jobs that don’t
require a machine.
Deon is heading up this day in my absence. Please feel free to call her with questions. 309-645-4911.
Join your ASG friends on September 15th at 10 am at the North Allen Branch of the Peoria Public Library. The day usually
ends at around 3. Feel free to stay the whole time or pop in for part of it.
See you soon!
Lynne LaHood, Community Liaison
WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE . . .
This summer I went on a tour of the British Isles with my mom. The first gas stop the bus took, I was
surprised and delighted to see not one but two sewing magazines in the newsstand area of the truck stop.
Though I did not buy them, I determined that if the opportunity presented itself again, I was buying them. That
opportunity came a few days later, and I was thrilled to come home with sewing magazines from another
country!
As I was reading them at home, I found myself looking up what GBSB meant . . . Great British
Sewing Bee. Later, I had written that same title in some neighborhood group meeting notes. With an emphasis
on the program coming up on both sides of the Atlantic and an opportunity to spend uninterrupted time online
when the rest of my family was out of town, I started watching the first season. Soon, I was taking breaks throughout the day to watch
the next portion of an episode. It has been humorous to learn some of the differences in what things are called such as poppers for
snaps or baby-grow for sleeper. And I love it when they talk about a fabric or task being fiddly when it is difficult.
When the family returned, I was just finishing up a season so they began watching with me. Even my husband found the
process interesting. There are only a few programs left to watch since it only lasted four seasons. The primary drawback I have now
is to wait until my husband comes home from work so we can watch another episode!

FROM THE BOOKSTORE
The Complete Photo Guide to Slipcovers: Transform Your Furniture with Fitted or Casual Covers. Linda
Neubauer.
This book is a complete step-by-step guide to sewing decorator slip covers including upholstered
chairs, sofas, ottomans and dining chairs.
Projects range from quick wraps that can be done in a short time frame to fitted slipcovers that need an
investment of time. The fitted covers stay firmly in place. They also create a whole new looking piece of
furniture.
There are 250 how-to photographs that show how you can make your slipcovers look professional.
Each step is explained and shown clearly. It takes you from measuring and cutting to the addition of designer
details and trims.
If you have priced the cost of custom-made slip covers, you might have been shocked by the cost. If
you have selected off-the shelf slip covers, you may have been disappointed with the fit and fabric choices
available.
The book will give you information so you can create slipcovers yourself.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS
NOTE: Be sure to report any charitable sewing you have done to your neighborhood group leader or to Martha Gamble at (309) 689-1951 (309) 678-6259-C [email protected]
ANTI-OUCH POUCH Anti-Ouch Pouches (AOPs) were designed by our chapter member Deon Maas. This underarm hanging pillow
is intended to add a little comfort to people’s lives during a stressful, painful time. The pillow hangs from the shoulder,
fitting snugly under the arm to cushion and ease the pressure of the underarm and breast area after breast surgery, upper
body surgeries or during radiation treatment.
Tens of thousands of anti-ouch pouches have been lovingly sewn and donated to breast centers across the United
States. The American Sewing Guild featured the Anti-Ouch Pouch as the 2008 National Community Service Project.
Read more at www.asg.org/?s=Anti+Ouch+Pouch.
This will continue to be an ongoing project for our chapter. We take them to the OSF Susan G Komen Center, Methodist
Diagnostic Center in Peoria and OSF in Galesburg. The digital mammography is catching so many more cases that our need has
increased. We would appreciate help making AOPs. Follow this link www.asg.org/files/community_service/Anti_Ouch_Pouch.pdf for
the pattern. If you have questions, contact Deon Maas at [email protected] or Sue Barnabee, [email protected].
Please consider donating soft fabric, stuffing or completed AOPs. We donate hundreds every few months in our area at OSF
Komen Center and Methodist Diagnostic Center.
ANGEL GOWNS OF CENTRAL ILLINOIS Loss of an infant leaves a sorrowful emptiness in the arms and hearts of their families who never
were able to bring the child home from the hospital. It can be an isolating time, especially as parents
try to find clothing in which to bury their tiny babies.
October 10-11 has been set for the drop off and pick up supplies day at the Chillicothe Christian
Church, 510 W Frances Street, Chillicothe, IL. For lunch reservations contact Kim Aldag at 698-2026.
The Chillicothe Christian Church is coordinating the project to make Angel Dresses from
wedding and formal gowns. The Angel Dresses are for babies who never recover in the neonatal
intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
The gowns are made for baby boys and girls to serve as baptismal/end of life gowns. Navy, gray and black are used for pant
sets for the boys. The gowns are made to fit the small premature babies. One wedding dress can make up to 10-12 Angel Gowns.
Each little outfit comes packed in a special, pretty keepsake box. In the box, along with the gown, is a handmade blanket and hat and
booties.
Over 100 wedding dresses have been donated since the project began. There is a need for pink, blue or black gowns. They
currently have a supply of wedding dresses. They also need ribbons, lace, buttons, thread and other notions, cash donations or JoAnn
Fabric gift cards to purchase sewing supplies. Dresses do not need to be cleaned before you send them. Unless your gown has been
trashed, sewers have had lots of luck spot cleaning and working around damage.
ASG members can contact Dorothy Burnett at (309) 647-1956 or Sue Barnabee, [email protected] (309) 647-0111 to make
donations or for more information.
CRITTENTON CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Crittenton Development Center serves Central Illinois children and families by providing loving
child care and a 24-hour staffed crisis nursery.
The center is in constant need of bibs. You can donate them directly, contact a CAB member for pick up or bring them to a
chapter/neighborhood meeting. The pattern is on the web site. www.peoriaasg.org/CommunityServiceCrittenton.html
Our chapter donates custom-made bibs, crib and cot sheets, burp pads and wash cloths to help defray the costs of purchasing
these items. Those patterns are on the web site link above. Crittenton staff members have said the items our chapter provides are
"much higher quality" than those they can purchase. Please consider helping. Supplies to make the items will be provided for you.
This year we will help support Crittenton Development Center by collecting coupons for baby items. Since these are time
limited, gather your coupons periodically and mail them to Crittenton Development Center, 442 W John H Gwynn Jr Ave, Peoria, IL
61605.
Our support at Crittenton Child Development Center is done by donating items that they need. This is a project we will be
continuing. Contact Lynne LaHood for information at [email protected].

MEET CHAMPAIGN/URBANA NEIGHBORHOOD
CO-CHAIR KATHY HATCH
In October, Kathy will be married for 40 years to her wonderful husband Greg. They have two
children. Daughter Erin is married to her son-in-law Brett. They have two sons, Ethan and Ian. They are
fortunate that they live about 2 hrs away in Carmel In.
Son Patrick is single and lives in Chicago. He is the one who challenged Kathy probably 15 years
ago or so on something he wanted which got her back into sewing. She made him a t-shirt quilt and an Irish
Double Chain quilt.
Kathy started sewing in the 4th grade with the help of one of her older sisters. She worked with
Kathy on a pair of gray wool culottes. Their mother was an excellent seamstress. She loves to shop on the secondary market. When
she returned to work full time after completing grad school, her mother altered any suits she had found (narrow the pant legs, narrow
the lapels and always needed, shorten the sleeves). So Kathy had beautiful Pendleton, Austin Reed, etc suits that really fit!
She always had an interest in garment sewing and it was on Kathy’s list to pursue further when she retired. Thus came her
membership in ASG and the neighborhood group in Champaign/Urbana. Kathy doesn't think she will ever be as accomplished as her
mother, but it gives me something to strive for.

Emma Seasbrook gives us these sewing hints for knit fabrics
Use a walking foot
Lighten machine foot pressure
Use a 75/11 STRETCH needle
Use 100% poly thread
Bobbin containing the same 100% poly thread
Stitch at slow speed. Knits like slow
Use flat hands to GUIDE the fabric. Do not GRIP, TUG or PULL fabric
Knits should be kept on a flat surface, not draping off the table
Pin together on the table, not the lap. Put a pin at each end and the middle. Work to close the gaps
Start sewing on the fabric and stitch off the end of the fabric. Turn the fabric and sew off the other end. Never sew onto
fabric, especially light weight fabric as it usually goes down into the bobbin area
Always best to sew floor to waist (up the leg and down the top side seam
Use stay tapes. They control knits so they don’t have ski moguls throughout your seams and knits

SEWING TIPS FROM SUE The new Pantone color is Greenery. It’s a yellow-green shade. Think about the first days of spring when everthing is fresh
and green. Green is nature’s neutral.
Transition colors that work with it are a pale lavender (Serenity) and a pale pink (Rose Quartz). Then they go to deep mossy
green (Treetop), medium purple (Twilight Purple) and a dark grayed blue (Orion Blue) along with a bright coral (Calypso Coral) and a
lighter gray (Nimbus Cloud). Don’t you wonder who thinks of all of the PANTONE colors? The link https://www.pantone.com/color-
of-the-year-2017 gives you more coordinating color ranges. You can sign up to get updates from PANTONE if you are interested.
Since it’s cooled just a little, it’s time to start thinking of sewing for fall. Get inspired at the Make It With Wool contest at
Sew Special ’17. You can make a garment for someone else if you don’t want to sew for yourself. But, you can’t go on to national in
that category. Better yet, make yourself a new garment. The garment group on Saturday is always willing to help with fit and make
suggestions.
I wish my friend Nancy Zieman the best on her retirement. We will remember all of the wonderful sewing tips we have
gained from such a lovely person.

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL SEWING MONTH National Sewing Month is a time to indulge your passion for sewing and is the perfect opportunity to
introduce yourself to sewing even if you’ve never tried it before. New and experienced enthusiasts can find free
sewing projects and guidelines for sewing, embroidery, craft and appliqué articles available on the Sewing & Craft
Alliance (SCA) website at www.sewing.org. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan declared September as National Sewing Month “in recognition of the
importance of home sewing to our Nation.” We need to work on making that an international celebration, too.
WELCOME TO OUR CHAPTER, NEW MEMBERS! Debbie Park, East Peoria
Sharon Spangler, Marietta
Carol Wolstenholm, Washington
