‘Show & Tell’ Luncheon June 18, 2016
Sponsored by the ASG Garment Group
The Garment Neighborhood Group invites all ASG members to start creating items to share with everyone at the
Show & Tell Luncheon. You can bring anything you have made -- garments for you or your family, accessories, home dec
items, quilts, crafts, embroidered items, community service projects – whatever you like to make. It’s fun to share this day
with visitors, so invite friends or family members to come with you.
For those who have never attended this event, bring or wear the items you want to show. You will be invited to come
to the podium to describe your project and then walk around the room showing the others what you have made. Don’t be
intimidated – come join us and have fun!
This year, we are featuring the 2016 DENIM JEANS CHALLENGE which began November 14, 2015. Winners will be
selected at the luncheon. The purpose is to repurpose denim clothing. No yardage or new denim fabric can be used.
Other fabrics allowed in addition to re-purposed denim include: leather trim or handles, other fabric trim, linings or
skirt flounce.
The challenge is to make a useful item from denim jeans – purse, tote bag, skirt, tool holder or craft item. Your
imagination is the limit. Don’t have any jeans? Check with your grandchildren, neighbors, friends or your local resale shop.
Our “Stash Sale” has been successful in the past. This year we are doing something different. Each member can bring
one item to swap. Bring something you want to “share” with someone and you take home a different item that someone else
wanted to “share”.

SEW SPECIAL…’16Featuring Rhonda Buss
The featured speaker for Sew Special…’16 is Rhonda Buss of Chicago. Rhonda is a past president of the
Haute Couture Club of Chicago.
The event will feature a hands-on handbag workshop for 12 participants on Friday. Rhonda will be
designing this project that will teach participants about zipper application, pockets, hardware and other handbag
construction techniques. We will end up with a finished bag. Saturday will feature all things sleeves including how to change garments by restyling the sleeves.
Samples will be available for different sleeve variations. Rhonda will demonstrate how to draft, cut, slash and construct each sleeve
variation. You don't have to be an expert because these techniques can apply to even a simple t-shirt style garment.
There will be a trunk show of some of Rhonda's fashions. The afternoon will conclude with a make it take it wool flower
accessory suitable for a lapel, hat, bag or wherever. A small kit fee will apply.
In addition, the Saturday Sew Special….’16 will feature a noon style show by the state Make It With Wool contestants.
Some would say that Rhonda was born with a needle in her hand. Her first project was an embroidered handkerchief that she
made with the help of her grandmother at the age of five.
Once in high school, she took every sewing and design class that her school offered. With nothing more to offer, she was sent
to the local community college where she had the opportunity to study fashion illustration and costume design.
While in college, she took the limited fashion design classes that were offered, but finally had the opportunity to truly hone
her skills at Ray College of Design in Chicago where she graduated with a degree in Fashion Design. In her final year, Rhonda won
numerous awards for her designs, including fur and millinery awards.
After graduating, Rhonda worked as a designer for a dress manufacturer. From there she did costume design and returned to
teach tailoring and design at Ray College.
In recent years, Rhonda began writing for Sew News Magazine. She has also been featured in Threads magazine, Sew It All,
and Sew Stylish. Her design was on the Spring 2014 cover for Sew Stylish magazine.
In 2012, Rhonda won The People’s Choice Award in the Passion For Fashion competition at the American Sewing Expo. In
2013, her design won third place.
In her popular blog, Rhonda’s Creative Life, Rhonda features easy to make designs made from simple shapes. She has a
passion for sharing her knowledge and believes that everyone can sew and create. They just need the basic knowledge.
You can find and follow her blog at www.sewbussted.com.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS November 12, 2016, the annual meeting will be in Peoria at the United Presbyterian Church, hosted by the Fulton County
NG. Plan to attend.
The Fulton County NG has donated 10 dresses and 56 sets of knitted caps and booties this quarter to OSF Children’s
Hospital of Illinois Preemie center for the Angel Project for infants who have passed away.
The Champaign/Urbana NG is reorganizing at this time. We will announce when meetings will be held. Contact Martha
Gamble with interest at (309) 689-1951 (309) 678-6259-C [email protected].
As a member of the American Sewing Guild (ASG), you have access to wonderful, useful information to help improve your
sewing skills. If you have not spent a little time on the national website or on the website of our local chapter, you are really missing
out on lots of valuable information.
Of all the benefits of membership, perhaps the most beneficial is being able to gather together in Neighborhood Groups.
Most Neighborhood Groups are organized by geographical location. However, groups may also be formed around a particular area of
sewing such as garments, home decorating, or embroidery.
Martha Gamble is the new Neighborhood Group Liaison. Her responsibility is to support the Neighborhood Group Leaders
and ensure that the leaders are receiving complete information from the Chapter Advisory Board. Please look in the newsletter or on
the website to see which group is either closest to you or presenting on a topic of interest to you.
So just how is ASG organized?? Who is guiding each area??

Cyndy Monier, President
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The indications of renewal are
evident as the freshness of Spring
envelopes the landscape. It is so refreshing
and comforting to know that nature comes
alive once again. The same is true for our
chapter. We are beginning a new year with
a new CAB composed of competent and
enthusiastic sewists. I am not new to the
board, but new to the presidency. I am so excited to see what
we as a chapter can accomplish this year. There are so many
opportunities to introduce the best kept secret in Central
Illinois. What secret you ask? Well, it is knowing that sewing
and ASG membership provide one of the most rewarding
adventures one can experience.
Sewing is such a wonderful activity and I want
everyone in the guild to become sewing advocates and share
our secret. Sewing allows one to express creativity, give to the
community, express love to family and forge friendships that
last a lifetime. Where else can you show off your sewing
creations, modest to extravagant, and receive encouragement
and accolades? I know within my own family I might get a
"that's nice". But my sewing friends at garment group
meetings ooh and ahh over a set in sleeve, or even a doll dress.
There is always a sewing friend to help with sewing dilemmas,
assist the creative process or place a pin to fit a muslin.
Sewing introduces new techniques, keeping the mind
active and the brain healthy. Sewing lowers blood pressure
(sometimes I do question this) and builds problem solving
skills. Sewing allows color skills to be developed and
exercises the tactile senses. Building a fabric stash, keeping up
with the latest sewing technology and working on a vintage
technique or pattern are just plain fun. And, what about
sewing road trips, retreats, conferences and trade shows?
These experiences are just too good to remain secrets
If you haven't picked up by now, sewing is my
passion, and I want to share my passion with all of you. I want
to encourage you to build your sewing passion or maybe
rekindle your sewing passion by sewing often and attending
guild meetings and activities. Check the chapter website,
www.peoriaasg.org, and plan to attend a group meeting. Ask
friends to attend with you. Challenge yourself to sew every
day or complete a new project every month. Plan a recycled
denim project for the Denim Challenge and maybe enter a
sewing project in the county fair. Use a creative approach to
reach out to those who don't sew and get them involved. My
goal is to see our chapter become so much fun that everyone
will want to be part of the sewing experience.
Plan to share your sewing successes and even
projects that don't turn out so well with your fellow sewing
enthusiasts. Take show and tell to meetings, send an article to
the chapter newsletter editor, submit a blog idea to the chapter
website, volunteer to lead a neighborhood group, and let a
CAB board member know about program or project ideas you
would like to see our chapter provide.
Renew yourself and be bold, creatively active, and
passionate about sewing.

MEET MEMBER LYNNE LAHOOD Sewing has been my passion since I can remember. Like many of you, my first attempts were making
clothes for my Ginny Dolls, baby dolls, and stuffed animals. My efforts resulted in awkward, misshapen outfits
but I loved them and my dolls didn’t complain. All my seams were on the outside so I say I was way ahead of my
time. I had found a way to express myself!
Serious sewing began when I was in the eighth grade and insisted on making my white graduation dress.
My mother was against it and she had a back up dress in case mine didn’t turn out. My creation was a beautiful,
tiered, cotton dress and it came out beautifully and was less expensive than the store bought dress. I couldn’t wait
to take off my graduation gown and show it off. I was hooked.
I made a few clothes in high school and early college and after that I took a break of many years from
clothing construction. But not from sewing! I decorated my homes with window treatments, pillows, bedspreads and quilts. I branched
into needlework, knitting and appliqué. If a gift could be made, I made it. My children always had homemade costumes and I am sure
there were times when they would have preferred the store bought versions! To me, that sewing was easier than clothing because of
fitting.
Then something wonderful happened. It was 2010 and I was living in Portland, Oregon, and I discovered ASG. A whole new
world opened up for me regarding clothing fit and construction. We had a large neighborhood group for garment construction and just
as we do in our chapter here, we shared our joys, fitting issues, frustrations and successes with one another. I was in sewing heaven.
Two years later I moved to Peoria and joined ASG as soon as I could. I am still frustrated by fit and sometimes construction, but
sewing remains my passion. I am so grateful to the women who have kept our chapter vibrant and fun because it really became a life
line for me when I moved here.
This is the year I am reducing my stash – have you heard that one before? Thus far I have sewn two pieces so I have a long
way to go! I am keeping a notebook outlining my projects that I want to accomplish by year’s end.
As the new Outreach/Community Liason, I welcome your ideas, comments and questions. I so appreciate all the dedication
and hard work that goes into an organization like ASG. Hats off to everyone who participates and makes our chapter what it is.
SEWING TIPS FROM SUE When sewing with shears, use silk thread, machine embroidery thread or lingerie thread to make the buttonholes. Use a net
or self fabric to make a lining for the garment. For full skirts, cut the skirt from the length, eliminating the side seams for a nicer look.
For full skirts, use a deep hem for added look and weight. Make a one thread dart by breaking the rule. Start at the point with a 20”
thread drawn out and threaded backwards through the needle. Tie a knot between the bobbin and top threads. Wind the excess thread
back onto the spool. Repeat for each dart. Remember to select lightweight buttons. The lining should be 1” shorter than the garment.
As you are doing your spring cleaning in your sewing room, remember to select one item you are willing to swap for
someone else’s item at the June luncheon. Remember the change to Bloomington for the luncheon this year.
If you are cleaning out 100% wool sweaters to donate, you might consider throwing them in the washer with hot water and
soap and then in the dryer on hot. These can then be recycled for one of those felted wool projects. Give it a try.
While we’re on the subject of wool, this is the year for you to enter the make-it-with wool contest here in Peoria during Sew
Special. What could be more convenient? Come to the garment neighborhood group. We’ll be glad to help.
Sue Barnabee is a former Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, and member of Haute Couture Club of Chicago. Her
articles and projects have appeared in Sew News, Creative Machine Embroidery, Woodworker’s Journal and McCall’s Quilting
magazines.
ILLINOIS STATE MAKE IT WITH WOOL Now is the time to start your Illinois State Make It With Wool project! 2016 is the 55
th year

on the beauty and versatility of wool; encourage the use of wool
fabric or yarn in sewing, knitting, crocheting, spinning and
weaving wool fabrics and yarns; offer the opportunity to compete for valuable prizes; and
recognition for sewing, knitting or crocheting skills.
Start sewing your wool garment now! It would be nice to have another ASG member in
the competition. The Central IL/Peoria Chapter ASG is a sponsor of the Illinois State Make It
With Wool contest.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS
CRITTENTON CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Crittenton Development Center serves Central Illinois children and families by providing loving child
care as well as a 24-hour staffed crisis nursery. The center is in need of crib sheets. The pattern is on the web site www.peoriaasg.org. You can donate
them directly, contact a CAB member for pick up or bring them to a chapter/neighborhood meeting.
Our chapter donates custom-made bibs, crib and cot sheets, burp pads and wash cloths to help defray the costs of purchasing
these items. Crittenton staff members have said the items our chapter provides are "much higher quality" than those they can purchase.
They are in constant need of sheets. Please consider helping. Supplies will be provided to you. This year we will help support Crittenton Development Center by collecting coupons for baby items. Since these are time
limited, gather your coupons periodically and mail them to Crittenton Development Center, 442 W John H Gwynn Jr Ave, Peoria, IL
61605.
Our support at Crittenton Child Development Center is done by donating items that they need. This is a project we will be
continuing. Contact Pat West for information at [email protected].
ANTI-OUCH POUCH Anti-Ouch Pouches were designed by our chapter member Deon Maas. This underarm hanging pillow is
intended to add a little comfort to people’s lives during a stressful, painful time. The pillow hangs from the shoulder,
fitting snugly under the arm to cushion and ease the pressure of the underarm and breast area after breast surgery, upper
body surgeries or during radiation treatment. Tens of thousands of anti-ouch pouches have been lovingly sewn and donated to breast centers across the United
States. The American Sewing Guild featured the anti-ouch pouch as the 2008 National Community Service Project. This will continue to be an ongoing project for our chapter. We continue to take them to the Susan G Komen
office, Methodist Diagnostic Center in Peoria and OSF in Galesburg. The digital mammography is catching so many more cases. Our
need has increased. We would appreciate help making AOPs. If you have questions, contact Deon Maas at [email protected] or
Sue Barnabee, [email protected]. The Peoria area is in continual need of Anti-Ouch Pouches. Please consider donating soft fabric, stuffing, or completed
AOPs. We donate 100’s every few months in our area at OSF Komen Center and Methodist Diagnostic Center.
Central IL/Peoria Chapter ASG is organizing a booth at the ASG convention this summer in Indianapolis to make Anti-Ouch
Pouches. We can use your help on April 29, 2016, at the North Branch of the Peoria Library to make a minimum of 500 kits to take
for the booth so attendees at the convention can make an Anti-Ouch Pouch to take home.
ANGEL GOWNS OF CENTRAL ILLINOIS To lose an infant leaves a sorrowful emptiness in the arms and hearts of their families who never
were able to bring their children home from the hospital. It can be an isolating time, especially as parents
try to find clothing to bury their tiny babies in.
The Chillicothe Christian Church is coordinating the project to make Angel Dresses from
wedding and formal gowns. The Angel Dresses are for babies who never recover in the neonatal intensive
care unit at Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
The white and ivory gowns made for baby boys and girls serve as baptismal/end of life gowns,
which traditionally adorn infants in white. Navy, gray and black are used for pant sets for the boys. The gowns are made to fit the
small babies, who are often born premature. One wedding dress can make up to 10-12 Angel Gowns.
Bridesmaid, Communion or Easter dresses, silky ribbons, lace, cotton thread and other notions or donations to purchase
sewing supplies will be accepted. You can contact Dorothy Burnett at (309) 647-1956 or Sue Barnabee, [email protected] (309)
647-0111.
Dresses do not need to be cleaned before you send them. Unless your gown has been trashed, sewers have had lots of luck
spot cleaning and working around damage.
Each little outfit comes packed in a special pretty keepsake box. In the box, along with the gown, is a handmade knitted or
crocheted blanket and hat and booties. Those who knit or crochet can also volunteer to make the blankets, hats and booties.
Tuesday March 15 from 9-3 and Wednesday, March 16 from 9-2 at the Chillicothe Christian Church, 510 W. Frances
Street, Chillicothe, IL. You can bring completed gown, pick up fabric and supplies, sew and visit. The group is not taking wedding
gowns at this time. They are accepting pink, blue, or black gowns, thread, buttons, ribbon or gift cards for JoAnn Fabrics. RSVP to
Kim Aldag for lunch. Contact Kim Aldag at (309) 698-2026 or e-mail at [email protected]. Go to
https://www.facebook.com/gowns4angels for more information about the group.

NEWS FROM YOUR COMMUNITY LIAISON
We are so fortunate to belong to a group who has the same interest – sewing! No matter what type of sewing you like, there
is someone who will support you and enjoy the process with you. We have so many opportunities to learn, share and give. As your
new Outreach Liaison, I just wanted to say a few words about ASG and what it means to me.
Relationships – Wonderful opportunities to meet other women and share what we know and love about sewing.
Education – Learning in Neighborhood Groups and being exposed to other learning opportunities through Sew Special, The Haute
Couture Club of Chicago, and the word of mouth that takes place about seminars and conferences in other cities.
Opportunities to give back – Sewing Days where we meet and sew for Crittenton by making cot sheets and bibs, making Anti-Ouch
Pouches for women who have had breast surgery. We bring a sack lunch and there are jobs for everyone. You do not have to bring
your machine because there are non-sewing tasks like cutting and ironing. We need everyone to participate because the need is great.
IF YOU HAVE FABRIC TO DONATE, PLEASE BRING TO ONE OF THESE DATES, OR CONTACT ME.
The dates this year are April 29 & September 9, 10 am to 6 pm. The location is the Peoria Public Library North Branch.
Support Your Local Fabric Stores -The Quilt Corner, Peddler’s Way, Sew Sassy, Galesburg Sewing and The Sewing Studio have
