KC adds that the Chairs of the Finance committee oversee the finances of the church. They lead the Finance Com-mittee meetings, making recommendations, keeping minutes and drafting the annual budget. New Beginnings

September is bound to be a joyful time of new beginnings!

A new school year kicks off on Tuesday, September 5

We return to our regularly scheduled programming on Sunday morning with two worship services

Site work is beginning for our building and renovation plans A new sermon series begins based on John 4

Our church leadership is creating a discipleship process for PUMC

In order to keep everyone informed about the discipleship process we are holding a church-wide Town Hall meeting. The church leadership invites everyone to this gathering during the Sunday school hour on Sunday, Sep-tember 10. We will discuss the faithful work completed thus far by our leadership. While we are eager to share this news with you, we also need your feedback as we prepare for the leadership retreat on September 22 & 23. The goal for our 24-hour retreat is a faithful discipleship process for PUMC that provides a clear route for us to BE and MAKE disciples of Jesus Christ.

Without question, all this newness brings a lot of excitement. However, there is an element of fear and anxiety sur-rounding all of it as well. All of those feelings are natural and okay. After all, there are so many unknowns in these new endeavors. Nevertheless, we must face them head-on. We cannot let fear and anxiety rule the day. We must trust in God's abiding presence with us. How do we do that? Well, let me offer one solution: spend time with Christ on a daily basis. Keep striving for those 28.8 minutes per day in prayer and 28.8 minutes per day in Bible study. Let God know your fears and anxieties. Let God know your joys and praises. Bring all our feelings and thoughts to the Lord.

One of the things we will explore this month is how one woman did just that with Jesus in John 4. Spending time with Christ transformed this woman. Truly, that’s happens when anyone spends time with Our Lord and Savior. And so, during this month of new beginnings, don't forget your connection with the Almighty. God wants all of you: your thoughts and feelings, your time and attention, your joys and concerns, your schedule and money, your worries and fears. When you bring them to the Lord every day, life is always filled with new beginnings.

Thank you to all who continue to create so that the Prayer Shawl Ministry continues to bless those in need.

Thank you for your donations to Ruby Leonard’s HVAC system. She and her family are enjoying a cool summer because of your generosity. Dear Church family, Many thanks for all the support shown for the 2017 Together for Tanzania Mission team . Your generosity continues to be appreciated. Your prayers are invaluable. Some of you just keep on giving. Several groups are already working on ideas to purchase a sewing machine for Lupi’s wife, Hope. Again we say thanks and may God richly bless each of you, Gail Timberlake, Jason Peyton, Dot & David Sam-uel, Jeanette Brannan

Thanks! Sally Paquette (804)14-2891.

Building Committee Update

What we’ve done: The Building Committee unanimous-ly approved the construction budget of $1,763,404. Site preparation work will begin the week of Aug. 28.

What’s next

The architectural plans have been submitted to the County planning department for approval. Antici-pate building permit – begin building walls – by first week of October.

The renovation project is planned to take 10-12 months until completion.

Commencing the week of Aug. 28, there will be a change in entrances to church facilities; entrance to the church offices will only be through the door next to playground; Entrance to the church sanctuary will be through the sanctuary front doors, side entrance next to playground or through the hallway from church offices; The CLC building will have access through its front door or side door next to the hillside; the dumpster; Entrance to Preschool will be either from side door at their breezeway or front door of CLC.

Where we are As of Aug. 20: We have received $761,156 in pledges and cash contributions for the build-ing fund. This is $238,844 away from our ultimate goal of $1 million.

Fundraising for Furnishings: The balance is $37,480.

What’s next

Oct. 1: Will be the ground-breaking worship service and luncheon celebration.

Oct. 28: A Brunswick Stew and Bake Sale to raise funds for furnishings.

What is still needed: $238,844 is still needed to reach our $1 million fundraising goal for the building renova-tion. Pledge forms and building fund envelopes can be found in the church office or contact Betty Bowman at [email protected] or 272-0648.

Note: It would help the counters tremendously if you would like to give to both the building effort and your normal pledge amount, please write two checks. This ensures that all donations are accurately recorded in the appropriate accounts. Thank you.

Want to lead a fundraising event, have a group lead an event or help with an event, please contact Jamie Timberlake at [email protected].

Preschool

Our opening theme for our 29th year of preschool at PUMC is "If You're Happy and You Know It..." Seems appro-priate as Preschool is such a happy place! We are excit-ed to have 30 brand new families join 40 families that have at some time in the recent or not so recent past had a connection with PUMC Preschool. We have a few spaces in our 2's and 3's classes but our Pre K classes are full. If enrollment continues to increase, we will be looking for a part time teacher. Minimum of a Child Development Certificate is required and an Associate Degree or Bachelor's in Early Childhood is preferred.

Sadly, we had to say good-bye to Anne Timberlake. Miss Anne taught our 5 day Pre K Class for the past 6 years. She decided to re-join the county school sys-tem after a 10 year absence. She was such a blessing to our preschool and will be greatly missed!

The preschool wants to thank the following people who have made generous donations to the preschool in the past few months:

Arlene Newton-in honor of her family (Scholarship Fund)

Melissa Conner-in honor of Sharon Baltimore

Brenda Butterfield-as a thank you to the PUMC Pre-school Staff

Harvey Paquette- Camp scholarship

Sandra Lowe-Camp scholarship

With all of the changes coming our way this fall, the Preschool Board made the decision to finish fencing the playground. This is a big project and the pre-school will pay the entire cost of $5,000 but we are convinced that it is in the best interest of the little ones entrusted to our care. As excited as they will be to watch the building process, we want to keep them safe and assure families that it is our #1 priority!

As traffic patterns and parking change, please be watchful and aware of our children. If you would like to help direct cars through drop off and pick up times, it will be appreciated. Thank you for keeping the Preschool Staff and children in your
