North County Coastal (Encinitas, Carlsbad, Oceanside)

We need volunteers willing to commit to helping out at one of our three primary childcare programs: Preschool, after school Operation Hero, or Hospital Child Watch. The student will need to choose a schedule with the Program Director that will best suit their experience with children, their educational goals, and their available time commitment. Preschool: Monday-Thursday, 9am-12pm, 5 elementary schools on Camp Pendleton, one in Oceanside, and Murrieta. Operation Hero: Monday/Tuesday/Thursday 3pm-6pm, Wednesday 1pm-4pm, 5 elementary schools on Camp Pendleton (classes are held either M/W or T/Th and students must commit to the same class.) Child Watch: Monday-Thursday 8am-3pm, Friday 8am-2pm, Navy Hospital Camp Pendleton Please submit a resume and statement of intent to the Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected] with your available days and times of commitment. If you selected days and times are available, you will be invited to the office for an interview with the Program Director. If both parties decide to move forward with the internship, the student must fill out a background form. After the background check has cleared, the student will begin volunteering. The background check is paid for by the ASYMCA. The only cost the students may incur is transportation costs getting themselves to/from the program site. Coaches will devote one hour a week for practice and one hour each Saturday for games throughout the season. Ivey Ranch offers therapeutic riding programs as well as caring for and grooming the horses. Equestrian activities and therapies are available for children, adults, and veterans. They also offer childcare programs working with children with special needs and able bodied children. Opportunities: Equestrian: Weekday mornings, afternoons, and Saturday opportunities. No horse experience required Riding Aide- guide clients on horses in equestrian therapy riding lessons (must be 18) Barn Buddies – Care for horses and their stalls. Junior Achievement 4756 Mission Gorge Place San Diego 92120 http://www.jasandiego.org Contact: Kerri de Jager (619) 906-4940 [email protected] Junior Achievement of San Diego County has provided life-changing programs to more than 730,000 youth—in the classroom and after school—to foster an understanding of how the “real world” works. To ensure youth are prepared for their future, JA teaches them how to get a job, start a business and how to manage money. Volunteer Opportunities: Weekdays during school hours, typically between 8am-2pm. Volunteer in a classroom, K-12th grade, in a North County Coastal school to teach students about finding a job, starting a business and how to manage money. Volunteers are provided with a training and the curriculum kit prior to volunteering. There are two ways to volunteer with JA: JA Day: All sessions of the curriculum will be taught on one day. This is usually about a 4hr commitment. JA Traditional: One session will be taught for one hour, once a week until all sessions are completed. (Ex: For Elementary Schools, there are 5 sessions, so the commitment would be one hour a week for five weeks,) Procedure:

MAAC Head Start, Early Head Start and State Preschool programs deliver the national school readiness program to economically disadvantaged children and their families.

Volunteer Roles: Support classroom teachers with: setting routines for children (i.e. following hand washing procedures, following the daily schedule), individualizing for children, small group activities, circle time, scaffolding children's learning by engaging with children during choice time, assistance in family style eating, lesson plans, observing children's development and documenting progress. A Step Beyond (ASB) serves underserved youth with opportunities that greatly expand their expectations and ambitions through dance education, academic support, and family services. ASB is focused on how to empower our students through academics and support them in creating successful educational paths. Volunteer tutors are needed to assist students in our Drop In Tutoring Lab with their homework during our academic support classes. We are in need of volunteer tutors during the weekdays (Mondays-Thursdays) in the afternoons/evenings (times vary between 3:45-7:30pm) to work with 4th-6th graders. Volunteers who might want to come in and teach photography or music or skateboarding, fashion design or desire to work on video production projects are also welcome.

Additional opportunity: Teen Mentor Program. There is a 1 year commitment with 1 day a week required. A background check and drug test is required and will be paid for with the 1 year commitment.

The program serves migrant students in 43 school districts. The regional office is located in San Marcos but volunteers work in different schools. Students are needed for a variety of tasks including their literacy program with K-3rd graders (in Escondido, San Marcos, Fallbrook and Vista), STEAM (Carlsbad, Fallbrook, Escondido, San Marcos and Vista). Volunteers can help with homework tutoring, making meals, playground games, craft projects, office work, reception area, facility maintenance, landscaping, overnight stays, reading a story or just sitting, listening and being kind to someone. Weekday shifts are from 3:30 – 6 pm and 6 pm – 9 pm. Weekend volunteers are needed 8am-12, 12- 4 pm and 4-9 pm. We do have an overnight shift for a female volunteer. The shift is from 9 pm – 8 am with security on campus at all times. The overnight volunteer can bring a screened friend with them and she does have her own room. Project R.E.A.C.H. Project REACH (Recreation, Employee Readiness, Academic Achievement, Communication Skills, Healthy Lifestyles) is an after-school “youth development” program that focuses on academic achievement and prevention education for middle and high school students. REACH sites are located at Rancho Buena Vista High School (Vista), Libby Lake Community Center (Oceanside), and Joe Balderrama Recreation Center (Oceanside). REACH works with students who demonstrate risky behavior, including poor academic achievement, truancy, gang affiliation, or issues with discipline/substance abuse. Internship information and commitment: Interns/volunteers help provide academic assistance/tutoring, develop relationships of trust, and serve as role models to help students become goal-oriented, healthy young adults Applicants must be able to commit to at least 1 semester, 2 days/week (Mon-Fri 2-6pm) Six applicants will be selected (2 interns per REACH site)

STEP UP Mentoring Program The STEP UP Mentoring Program is a 3-tier mentoring program that provides youth development programming and local gang prevention resources in order to decrease the number of local youth in- or at-risk of becoming involved with gangs and other risky behaviors. STEP UP Interns become mentors to high school students, and in return, high school students mentor students in middle and elementary school. STEP UP sites are located at Rancho Buena Vista HS, General Murray HS, Vista Innovation and Design Academy, Rancho Minerva MS, and Maryland Elementary. Volunteers are needed to: • Guide and assist students in a wide variety of projects and activities that may range from academic enrichment to art and music projects. • Help to create a fun, encouraging, and welcoming atmosphere for the students. • Supports instructors and peer educators in maintaining order at each station. This will include maintaining noise levels to a minimum and mediating various activities, • Assists in setting up for daily activities in the multipurpose room. This may include the preparation and distribution of healthy snacks and table and chair set-up and room clean up.

Procedure: Contact Keliana Tiner at [email protected] to schedule a interview and facility walk though. Here, the volunteer process will be listed in detail. You will be directed to Human Resources to get a background check and volunteer paperwork filled out. A TB test will also need to be done prior to starting with our organization. Once the background check (costs $35) and TB test reading have been completed (procedure can take at least a week), you can start. A quick volunteer orientation will be done on the first day with a detailed packet listing duties and services given to the volunteer to reference. Requirements: Background check ($35), TB Test. Traveling Stories, is nonprofit organization that specializes in creating experiences where families fall in love with reading! Our StoryTent programs deliver a sustainable, family-focused solution for improving literacy rates before the 4th grade.

Traveling Stories needs StoryTent Readers to read with kids at local farmers markets. Our volunteers give out Book Bucks for every book a child reads, which the child can then use to purchase prizes.

Opportunities: Volunteers are placed at school sites in San Diego County to support students who are chronically absent. Interns work with students and families, providing targeted support to boost student attendance and family stability. Interns also work on school-wide efforts to positively impact the climate and culture around attendance. They receive regular, ongoing one-on-one supervision. The internship commitment is for the whole school year, at a minimum of 12 hrs per week. Interns must be currently enrolled in school to participate.

Requirements: A 12 hour per week schedule is made to accommodate both the student's availability and the school site's preferences. Prospective interns will interview at United Way. If accepted, interns will complete 4 days of training at United Way at the beginning of the school year. Interns begin at their assigned school sites in mid-September. Required screenings depend on the school site, but is typically a TB test and signing a volunteer agreement before beginning at the school site.
