Passing By – Part Two
In the previous article we began with the exam-ple of Elisha of whom the Shunnamite woman said, “Look now, I know that this is a holy man of God, who passes by us regularly” (II Kings 4:9). She rec-ognized that Elisha was no ordinary person and she was right. What was true of Elisha was also true of our Lord Jesus. Jesus was constantly passing by and the people took note that He was no ordinary person. One thing that we need to mention is in the calling of His disciples. It was in passing by that He called them. Matthew 9:9 – “As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, "Follow Me." So he arose and followed Him.” Mark 1:16 – “And passing along by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea; for they were fishers. 17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. 18 And straightway they left the nets, and followed him.” (ASV) John 1:35, 36 – “The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God’.” (NIV) In each of these instances Je-sus was passing by but those men notice He was dif-ferent and that is why they chose to follow Him. But Elisha and Jesus made an impression on the people they were around but what about us? We are passing by places and people every day. What sort of impression are we making upon them? Some are of the opinion that since we cannot do the miracles that Elisha and Jesus did then we can’t have any real influ-ence on them. But remember that the Shunnamite woman was not so impressed with the person of Elisha but with the fact that he was a man of God. Do people take notice of us? They can if we are living for God and Christ as we should. In Acts 4:13 we are told, “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and un-trained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13). The people took notice that those disciples had been with Jesus. It ought to make a difference when we pass by. Jesus is not walking this earth in the flesh anymore but He does live in us. Paul told the Galatian brethren, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Gal. 2:20). All that some people will ever see of Christ is what they see in those of us who are His disciples today. Let us all pray that some will see that each of us are a man or woman of God!
