Introduction

The verbs SER and ESTAR can be used together with many adjectives. The meaning of the sentence will change depending on which one is chosen.

SER + adjectives SER is used with adjectives to describe the qualities of a

person, place or thing (what someone or something is like).

Examples:

Marta es fuerteMarta is strong

La casa es rojaThe house is red

Texas es un estado grandeTexas is a large state

ESTAR + adjectives ESTAR is used with adjectives to describe conditions that are

true at a given time but not inherit qualities. It is also used to describe how we feel about a certain person or object.

Examples:

Marta está alegreLuis is happy

Jaime está cansadoJaime is tired
