11. Descend to the earth to reign with Christ Rev 15:3-8; 20:4; Dan 7:17-19, 27

Refer to the Bible Study Steps in the Resurrection Process for details.

*NB: The resurrections (as well as the rewards and punishments) seem to happen at the same time. This would be because Daniel 12:2; Acts 24:15; John 5:28-29; Mark 8:38 are telescopic prophecies – the Hebrew mind would think that way and recognize it as such. A telescopic prophecy is one which makes future events look as if they are happening at the same time (eg one may look at mountains in the distance and they look close together. Yet they can be 50 miles apart or more). The prophetic event looks to be as one – but are actually separate events.

If it were not for the book of Revelation we would not have clarity of the sequence of end-time events.

It is chiefly because we have the book of Revelation that we know the sequence of events, more-or-less. I believe that it demonstrates that there are 3 resurrections representing 3 classes of people:

1. resurrection to spirit life

2. resurrection to physical life with an opportunity for salvation

3. resurrection to death.

That sequence makes sense to me. Belief in 3 (instead of 2) resurrections is virtually unheard of in Christian theology. However, history records that some sabbatarians believed in 3 resurrections in the 2nd century:

“These Jewish Christian groups, referred to by Epiphanius (Williams, 1987) as Nazarenes or Elkasaites, professed the following beliefs: They proclaimed Jesus as prophet-Messiah; insisted upon the validity of the Torah & laws of ritual purity; spoke of three resurrections; professed a millennarian eschatology; looked forward to the restoration of the Temple; observed the feast of Sukkoth (Tabernacles), celebrated Easter at Passover, & observed the Sabbath; affirmed the primacy of James, brother of Jesus, over Peter in the leadership of the church; & preferred the designation "Nazarene" over "Christian." ("Early Judaism" by Eric Meyers) (emphasis mine).

If it is indeed true that the Nazarenes of the 2nd century are our spiritual ancestors, it would appear from the above quote that they believed in 3 resurrections. One can assume that they believed in 3 resurrections in similitude to what the old WCG taught (viz 1st resurrection of the saints; 2nd

resurrection of the majority of mankind who were not 'called' to salvation in this life; 3rd resurrection to eternal death of the wicked).

It may be more than passing interest that there were 3 resurrections performed in the Old Testament (IKings 17:17-25; IIKings 4:32-37; 13:20-21); 3 by Christ (Luke 7:11-18; Mark 5:35; John 11); and 3 after Christ's death (Matt 27:51-53; Acts 9; 20). Bullinger in his superb Number in Scripture goes so far as to state that: "three is the number of resurrection" (page 111) because Christ rose the 3rd day; he was perfected on the 3rd day, he was crucified at the 3rd hour; for 3 hours darkness shrouded the region at the time of His crucifixion; he raised 3 persons from the dead; and it was on the 3rd day that the earth was caused to rise up out of the waters in Genesis.

Dan 12:2; Acts 24:15; Rev 20:4-6, 12-15 have a consistent approach to resurrection.

“Also Acts 24:15, where Paul speaks of the hope he shares with the Jewish people “that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous,” and Revelation 20:4-6 and 11-15, where the two resurrections are separated by a thousand years” (J. Ramsey Michaels in The Gospel of John in The New International Commentary on the New Testament, p322).

Now notice what some insightful commentators have to say about this in the context of John 4 and 5:

"Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live …

Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice

and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.” (John 5:25, 28-29 ESV)

Compare with

“Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.” (John 4:21, 23 ESV)

“… “an hour is coming,” echoing verse 25, except the transforming postscript, “and now is,” is conspicuous by its absence… The same two expressions occurred in Jesus’ dialogue with the Samaritan woman, but with a quite different rhetorical effect. There, Jesus first said, “an hour is coming” (4:21), and then used the longer expression, “an hour is coming and now is,” to define what he meant (4:23). Here by contrast, the two expressions do not refer to the same “hour.” The longer one comes first, announcing a future about to begin, or one that has begun for the readers (v.25). The shorter expression, “an hour is coming” (v.28), points to a more remote future (equivalent to “the last day”) and a literal, not just spiritual resurrection and judgment” (ibid p321). The following chart comparing John 5:24-25 with Revelation 20:4-6 by William Hendriksen throws further light on the subject (New Testament Commentary Exposition of the Gospel According to John: Two Volumes Complete in One, p200). NB: Hendriksen has taken the words “and (he) does not come into condemnation...” and placed them in alignment with Rev 20:6 to demonstrate the point how these Scriptures speak of the same event:

Fourth Gospel Revelation

A. First Resurrection A. First Resurrection

“I most solemnly assure you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me has everlasting life … has passed out of death unto life. I most solemnly assure you, the hour is coming – yea, has already arrived! – when the dead will hear his voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.” “and (he) does not come into condemnation...”

“… and I saw the souls of them that had been beheaded … and such as not as worshiped not the beast, neither his image, and received not the mark upon their forehead and upon their hand; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years … This is the first resurrection. “Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection: over these the second death has no power.”

B. Second Resurrection B. Second Resurrection

(unto judgment) (unto judgment)

“Stop being surprised about this, for the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and will come out: those who have done good, for the resurrection of life, and those who have practised evil, for the resurrection of condemnation.”

“And I saw a great white throne and him who sat upon it… Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne; and books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works: And the sea gave up the dead that were in it; and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them: and they were judged according to their works… And if any one was not found in the book of life, he cast into the lake of fire.”

19. rebellions and national sins decrease during the Millennium as peoples and individuals are converted until there is world peace and posterity

National sins gradually decline over decades and centuries

Typology of Numbers 29:12-38 applies

20. The restoration of all things*: a new economy, nature of animals, new language** etc gradually unfold across the world in tandem with or alongside the above – the Wonderful World Tomorrow achieved!

Act 3:20-22

NB: the Millennium won’t be a ‘bed of roses’ nor an overnight event. It will take some time to expand His rule over the entire earth and to bring peace and prosperity for all nations. Refer to the Bible studies The Judging of the Nations and “Kiss the son before he becomes angry, and you die where you stand”: The Messiah and the Nations.

*NB: “In Matthew 19:28 Jesus declared that ‘the regeneration’ would take place ‘when the Son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory.’ His terminology is significant. It indicates that when Christ, as the Son of man (as a human, a kinsman of mankind) rules the earth, there will be a return to the original state that existed when the earth was born, which is recorded in Genesis and involved mankind’s tenant possession or administration of the earth as God’s representative. Christ taught that He will begin to exercise that rule when He returns in glory with His holy angels (Mtt. 25:31) … Peter declared that ‘the times of refreshing’ and ‘the times of the restitution of all things’ will come when God sends Christ back to be personally present on the earth ... F. F. Bruce wrote that ‘the restitution’ to which Peter referred in Acts 3:21 ‘appears to be identical with’ ‘the regeneration’ to which Jesus referred in Mat. 19:28, and that the restoration involved will include ‘a renovation of all nature.’” (Renald E. Showers, Maranatha, Our Lord Come, pp86-87)

**NB: “Here not only giving the millennial nations ‘cleansed’ or ‘purified’ lips, as regenerated peoples, but apparently also in the sense that ‘lip’ signifies ‘language’ (Gen. 11:1, Gen. 11:6-7, Gen. 11:9) … That would be not all that surprising, since Israel will be the chief nation in that economy (Deu. 28:13) and Jerusalem in that day will be the religious and governmental capital of the millennial earth (Isa. 2:2-3; Zec. 8:20-23). Moreover, it is all the more probable since the judgment of the nations at the second advent will eventuate in the destruction of the satanic world system … That system had its beginning in ancient Babylon with its pride, idolatry, and rebellion (Gen. 10:8-10; Gen. 11:1-6). The gift of a pure speech will remove the curse of Babel, and it will anticipate the great millennial outpouring of the Spirit (Joel 2:28-32), of which Pentecost (Acts 2:1-11) was an illustration.” (Merrill F. Unger, Unger’s Commentary on the Old Testament. Note on Zeph 3:9) [emphasis mine]

"In the light of the whole Scripture, it appears that the Millennium is like a "firstfruits" of the eternal state. The Millennium will be like a preview of the eternal messianic kingdom that will be revealed fully in the eternal state. Therefore, because the two are alike in nature, they share distinct similarities. Yet because they are both different revealed time periods, they would likewise reflect some dissimilarities ..." (Ralph H. Alexander, Ezekiel, Everyman’s Bible Commentary, Vol.6, page 945, note on Does Ezekiel 40-48 Relate to the Millennium or to the Eternal State?) [emphasis mine]

“If apocalyptic represents a development, one would expect the earlier stage to fall by the wayside . . . [Instead] the NT, while clearly availing itself of the expanded imagery and thought forms of apocalyptic, equally clearly retains a point of view fully consonant with OT prophecy . . . [Thus] the [Biblical] apocalyptic view did not replace the prophetic one but rather existed beside it, enriching and expanding it, but never supplanting it” (JN Oswalt, “Recent Studies in Old Testament Eschatology and Apocalyptic,” Journal of Evangelical Theological Society, 1985: 301). [emphasis mine]

“Various OT texts reveal conditions that are part of the millennial kingdom on earth but not part of the new heavens and new earth in the eternal state. Isaiah 65:17–25 and 66:22– 24 reveal conditions that cannot be part of the eternal state. These descriptions require an intermediate kingdom prior to the eternal state.

Isaiah states that the child will die one hundred years old and the sinner being one hundred years old shall be accursed (Isa 65:20). The death of children at 100 years old shows the longevity of life in the millennial kingdom. This verse also shows that King Jesus will judge those unbelieving children of the tribulation saints who physically survive the tribulation period and enter the kingdom in their physical bodies. Physical death will not happen in the new heavens and new earth. John wrote, “There will be no more death” (Rev 21:4).” (Gary Gromacki, “The fulfi8llment of the Abrahamic Covenant,” The Journal of Ministry and Theology, vol 18, no 2, 2006:100-101) [emphasis mine]

Note the New Living Translation of Is. 65:20 “No longer will babies die when only a few days old. No longer will adults die before they have lived a full life. No longer will people be considered old at one hundred! Only the cursed will die that young!”

This indicates that this Scripture may apply to both the Millennium and the Last Great Day.

***Similarly, Isaiah 51:6 states “Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished” -clearly this refers to the Day of the Lord and not the universal event just prior to the New Heavens and New Earth referred to in IIPet 3:10-13.

5. Ezekiel 36-48 – foretype of Revelation 20-22

Finally, as with so much Scripture, these chapters of Ezekiel may be typological of later events, viz:

Relevant chapter in Ezekiel and its Typology for the post-Millennial period

Ezekiel Revelation

Ch 36 – return of Israel to the Holy Land (Second Exodus) Ch 21:10-15 – Second & Third resurrection*

Chs 38 & 39 – armies invade the Holy land after the Messiah returns Ch 20:7-9 – post Millennial armies

Ch 37 – restoration of Israel and the resurrection Ch 21:10-15 – Second & Third resurrection

Chs 40-48 – Millennial temple Chs 21-22 – the New Jerusalem

Note: no typology is perfect or complete – they merely inform us of other or future events and demonstrate some similarities. By studying a given portion of Scripture as typology, we gain a greater insight into their counter-part prophecy.

*NB: Revelation 20:11-13 seems to be in chronological order to this writer. However, consider that it might be a ‘Hysteron proteron.’ Here is an example found in Revelation 6:4:

“And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.”

"The hysteron proteron ... is a rhetorical device. It occurs when the first key word of the idea refers to something that happens temporally later than the second key word. The goal is to call attention to the more important idea by placing it first.

"The standard example comes from the Aeneid of Virgil: "Moriamur, et in media arma ruamus" ("Let us die, and charge into the thick of the fight"; ii. 353). An example of hysteron proteron encountered in everyday life is the common reference to putting on one's "shoes and socks", rather than "socks and shoes".

The sequence, one feels, should have been: We granted his prayer; we made his wife fertile for him; and [having done so] we gave him John. The reversal of the expected sequence (hysteron proteron) in the verse suggests immediacy: Zechariah's prayer was granted without any delay at all, so much so that the detail itself, "We made his wife fertile for him," was not allowed to intervene between the prayer and its acceptance" (article “Hysteron Proteron,” Wikipedia).

With that in mind, consider Rev 20:11-13:

"The modern reader will ... wonder how it is possible to narrate the final judgment of the dead v 12 though their "resurrection" is not mentioned until v 13... it is ... possible that this is another instance of his use of hysteron-proteron, i,e., the arrangement of events in the reverse of their logical order..." (D Aune, Revelation 17-22, World Bible Commentary, p1102).

John Taylor observes that this sort of thing is “typical of Hebrew poetical writing which is used in these oracles. It is fond of repetition and delights to revert to previous statements and enlarge on them, even though the result is to destroy all sense of consecutive arrangement" (Ezekiel, p 247).
