From the Pastor’s Desk 23nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Theme: Favoritism
The appearance is always what first grabs our attention. We see someone who is beautiful
or handsome and we look at them. We take note of the clothes, cars, houses of friends and
those we envy. We find ourselves comparing and judging. In the presence of some, we
feel superior and gifted. In the presence of others, We feel inferior and depressed. Life
becomes a kind of see-saw: We go up if others go down; if others are up we go down. We
may even feel that somehow the gifts of others and the praises they receive are robbing us
of our share. There just isn’t enough recognition to go around.
There is another way material things influence our behavior and judgment. We judge the
moral character of a person by their possessions, social status and reputation. We show
deference to the “rich and famous.” we contrast, we neglect those of meager and ordinary
means. We leave them to fend for themselves. When the “shakers and movers” of our
society or community come into our presence, we make room. We hustle the lowly and
the poor to the rear of the bus or back of the building. Even we cannot sit on the pew
with some class of people. In the presence of the mighty we often feel and act differently.
Our hearts race. Our blood pressure rises. We watch our words and actions. We perform
to the best of our ability, lest we seem unworthy of being in the presence of the great. Favoritism is destructive in all human relationships. Siblings know well the pain that
they can cause when they play parents one against the other. Teachers who single out
certain children for special treatment lose their effectiveness and the respect of the class. continued on page 3

23 Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Tema: Favoritismo La apariencia siempre es lo primero que llama nuestra atención. Vemos a alguien que es hermoso o
guapo y los miramos. Tomamos nota de la ropa, los carros, las casas de amigos y aquellos a quienes
envidiamos. Nos encontramos comparando y juzgando. En presencia de algunos, nos sentimos
superiores y dotados. En presencia de otros, nos sentimos inferiores y deprimidos. La vida se
convierte en una especie de subibaja: subimos si otros bajan; si otros están arriba, bajamos. Incluso
podemos sentir que de alguna manera los dones de los demás y las alabanzas que reciben nos están
robando nuestra parte. Simplemente no hay suficiente reconocimiento para todos.
Hay otra manera en que las cosas materiales influyen en nuestro comportamiento y juicio. Juzga-
mos el carácter moral de una persona por sus posesiones, estatus social y reputación. Mostramos
deferencia a los "ricos y famosos". Contrastamos, descuidamos los de medios escasos y ordinarios.
Los dejamos a valerse por sí mismos. Cuando los "agitadores y motores" de nuestra sociedad o
comunidad vienen a nuestra presencia, hacemos espacio. Nos apresuramos a los humildes y los

injustas es especialmente destructivo para la comunidad de fe que
proclama a Jesús como Señor. Cada parroquia debe examinar con
frecuencia las formas en que se tratan a los diversos miembros.
Nunca debe haber feligreses de primera y segunda clase. Jesús
ama a todos los miembros de la comunidad. Jesús murió por todos,
para que todos puedan cobrar vida en él. El regalo de salvación de
Jesús no se basa en nuestros logros sino en nuestra necesidad
común y nuestra filiación. No puede haber favoritismo entre
nosotros, porque todos hemos sido favorecidos por Dios con su
asombrosa gracia.
La carta de Santiago nos proporciona la vida de la iglesia primi-
tiva. Es un vistazo que no es tan elogioso. Se supone que la comu-
nidad de fe ama y actúa de la manera en que Dios actúa, imparcial-
mente. Dios mira el corazón y las necesidades de cada uno de sus
hijos. Entonces, debe ser con la Iglesia. Sin embargo, el favoriti-
smo está presente. Los pobres están siendo tratados vergon-
zosamente. Los ricos y bien vestidos son escoltados al frente. Tal
favoritismo divide a la comunidad. Peor aún, hace un juicio falso y

jueces que dictan decisiones corruptas? ¿No escogió Dios a los

¡Espera un minuto! De estas palabras de Santiago, ¿no está Dios
mostrando favoritismo hacia los pobres y humildes? No. Él sim-
plemente está respondiendo a sus necesidades porque nadie más lo
hará. Dios no se mantiene indiferente y se conmueve con los gritos
de su pueblo. Hacer eso lo haría un accesorio de la injusticia. La
respuesta de Dios a los pobres y humildes es un elemento necesa-
rio de justicia y cuidado. La tragedia es que Dios debe responder
en primer lugar. La comunidad de fe debe estar ocupada satisfaci-
endo las necesidades de las personas.
Para concluir, nuestras comunidades necesitan mostrar el amor
amable que Dios muestra hacia nosotros. Todos los pueblos deben
encontrar una bienvenida en nuestras asambleas. El beso de la paz
y el aceite de la grandeza debe extenderse a todos, especialmente a
los rechazados y olvidados. Debemos orar para que el Espíritu
Santo nos abra los ojos y los oídos. Debemos orar para que el
Espíritu llene nuestros corazones de aguas vivificantes para que
todos puedan ser refrescados y renovados en el Señor.

Favoritism based on unjust or unfair standard is especially
destructive of the faith community which proclaims Jesus as
Lord. Each parish must frequently examine the ways in
which various members are groups are treated. There must
never be first class and second-class parishioners. Jesus
loves all members of the community. Jesus died for all, so
that all might come to life in him. Jesus’gift of salvation is
not based on our achievements but on our common need
and sonship. There can be no favoritism among us, because
we have all been favored by God with His amazing grace. The letter of James provides us with early Church life. It is
a glimpse that is not all that complimentary. The commu-
nity of faith is supposed to love and act the way God acts-
impartially. God looks at the heart and the needs of each of
his children. So, it must be with the Church. However, fa-
voritism is present. The poor are being treated shamefully.
The rich and well-dressed are escorted to the front. Such
favoritism divides the community. Worse, it makes false
judgement and does not follow the ways of the Lord. “Have
you not set yourselves as judges who hand down corrupt
decisions? Did not God choose who are poor in the eyes of
the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom he
promises to those who love him?”
Wait a minute! From these words of James, isn’t God show-
ing favoritism towards the poor and lowly? No. He is sim-
ply responding to their needs because no one else will. God
does not stand by indifferently and remain moved by the
cries of his people.To do so would make him an accessory
to injustice.God’s response to the poor and lowly is a neces-
sary element of justice and care. The tragedy is that God
must respond in the first place. The faith community should
be busy meeting the needs of people.
To conclude, our communities need to show the kind love
that God shows toward us. All peoples must find a welcome
in our assemblies. The kiss of peace and the oil of grand-
ness must be extended to all, especially the rejected and
forgotten. We must pray that the Holy Spirit will open our
eyes and ears. We must pray that the Spirit will fill our
hearts with life-giving waters so that all may be refreshed
and renewed in the Lord.

Religious Education Classes... Begin on Sunday September 16th and Wednesday Evenings
September 19th. Only registered students can attend classes.
Confirmation Retreat Will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at St. Christopher’s Parish
Center located at 130 Midland Ave. corner of Edison St., Staten Island.
Arrival time is 9:45AM. Retreat time is 10:00AM to 2:00PM. Lunch will
be provided. At the retreat the Candidates will have the opportunity to
receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

for September the 2018 program year.
Registration forms can be picked up in the back
of the church or in the parish office. The complete
registration form, a copy of the Baptism certificate, a
copy of the birth certificate along with the registra-
tion fee are to be submitted at the time of registration.
Registrations are accepted during parish office hours.
