Why can’t women become bishops or priests in the Catho-lic Church? There are many major Christian denomina-tions that allow it, such as Episcopalians, Presbyterians and Lutherans, and when I’ve attended wedding or funeral services in their churches, I’ve been impressed by how well those women performed. Let’s consider the role of women throughout the Church’s long history. Jesus had many women followers, among them Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, as well as Martha and Mary (the sisters of Lazarus). Jesus welcomed them warmly in a way that certainly shocked his contemporaries, and he allowed those women to serve him in varied ways as his disciples. However, Christ only commissioned his male disciples as his apostles (Matthew 10:2-4), whom he eventually entrusted with the sacraments of the Holy Eucharist (Luke 22:13-21) and Reconciliation (John 20:23). The apostles were therefore the Church’s first priests, and when it came time for the replacement of Ju-das, they said that “it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us …become a witness to his resurrec-tion” (Acts 1:21-22). In the New Testament record and annals of the Church’s history, priests and bishops were exclusively male. This was never done as matter of dis-crimination, but rather following the example given by Christ and the first generation of the Church’s leadership. This has never negated the critically important role that women have played in the Church’s history, for women stood by Christ during his passion, were the first witnesses of the Resurrection, were present at the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, supported the apostles financially and spiritually, and many were martyred for their faith (seven figuring prominently in the Roman Canon alongside eight men). It is true that there are women who are better public speak-ers, who are more compassionate and more devout than some priests and bishops. But I’d like to draw an analogy about that observation with this circumstance: there are men whose health habits, physical shape, education and sense of nurturing would make them far better equipped to bear children, but that is not how they were designed by their Creator, who exclusively chose women for that role. Despite their natural gifts, such men were destined for a different role, and we accept that distinction. A small percentage of men are called to the priesthood and episcopate, and the balance are called to other equally im-portant but different vocations. Women likewise have a range of vocations to choose from, each with equal dignity and importance in furthering the Kingdom. Women have founded numerous religious orders, served as leaders of institutions such as schools and hospitals, worked as mis-sionaries, and contributed immensely to the growth of the Church. Women who have chosen the vocation of married life and motherhood have produced some of the Church’s finest saints through their tireless efforts to raise another generation in the faith. The Church is grateful for these sacrifices, all of which have supported men called to the ministerial priesthood. Please remember that all believers, male and female, are called through their baptism to the royal priesthood, where we imitate the example of Christ, who emptied himself in sacrifice for the good of others. We are all members of the One Body of Christ, each with a distinct role to perform in order for the Church to thrive. Without Saint Monica (a lay woman), there would not have been a Saint Augustine (a bishop and doctor), whose feasts we just commemorated in late August. Let us therefore celebrate the diversity of our gifts, recognizing that all vo-cations, when pursued as God intended, are equal in dig-nity and benefit, and give glory to our Creator.

Warmest thanks go out to our Pastor Father Suskey who celebrated the Mass and gave a special blessing to all the catechists as well his expression of gratitude to all of them at the breakfast, and to Deacon Mark Kuhn who assisted and preached at the Mass! OLGC School Highlight Eighth Grade Science off to an "Egg-ceptional" Start

Our eighth grade science classes have been busy since entering the lab in August. Under the tutelage of Mrs. Anne Acker, the eighth grade students have used their knowledge of the scientific method to test old wives' tales such as chicken soup being the cure for the com-mon cold. The students also tested Newton's Law of Inertia by creating unique containers for an "egg"-citing egg drop experiment. Learning science is a blast at OLGC- the place you want to be!
